Pretty sure it was 3d world

That “is real mario depressed?” is GOLD, it should be uploaded on its own tbh
to counter scott's point on why origami might be bad in this universe: if you think about it, it's kinda like a form of body horror to them.
harder to really picture with a full 3d person i guess (since the 4th dimension only exists to turbonerds), buit like imagine if someone folded your skin up into a vaguely similar facsimile of yourself?
More clips like this would be amazing, this is such a good idea
Hopefully with the Super Mario RPG Remake later this year. Mario RPGs will get back on the right track.
Maybe we can get some *ACTUAL* Mario RPGs...
I miss the Mario & Luigi series
I think if they just go back to the first 2, they ruined the things introduced in origami king. The story-focused element just don’t work with the more modern system such as the puzzles and exploration because RPG is supposed to be linear so the heavy story would work.
@@piranhalettuceSame, I wish they made another one. Absolutely one of my favorite turn based game series of all time.
@@KarpetBurn Too bad the developers behind them went bankrupt!
Okay so this may sound weird, but I personally think Bobby just being a generic Bob-Bomb actually works for his character really well.
So do I. He just feels like a regular guy you’d meet while riding on the bus who just minds his own business.
Sorry ass name tho, ngl most Mario rpg characters have ass names like goombario and koops
It's the point of his character.
He's just a normal bob omb that comes and goes, Bob Ombs don't have a long life spam, they know their life won't be long and all they can hope to do is to make the biggest impact on that short time, and basically, to be remembered.
Those ideals are extremely depressing, specially for a Mario game, and the fact that Bobby just accepts it as something that will happen, is just sad. They die and get replaced, and the world keeps moving without them.
@@Gabi-dd7bqI know I'm late, but I'd agree if the game didn't make you sacrifice them by the dozens
@@Charnutboy Sorry, I just don’t see how that changes anything from Bobby’s character philosophy.
I don’t get it: If Intelligent Systems doesn’t want to make a Paper Mario RPG then why put in RPG elements? They feel so shoehorned in.
Because they have to, Paper Mario sold well so they have to take advance of that. At the same time Tanabe wants to challenge himself to move towards new and innovative concepts.
@@orangeslash1667it's going to sale poorly if they keep doing that. People are tired of the embarrassing attempts of keeping this serie as an RPG and everyone, Non Paper Mario Fan included, would prefer the game to stop wearing the husk of an RPG and focus on the action adventure part
@@dieghautdeforme5049 Maybe Nintendo will abandon it like they need F-zero, because it's difficult to evolve a series without being too gimmicky????
The last three paper Mario's followed the same format, no unique characters other than a generic Zelda fairy companion that literally does 70% of the dialogue and a battle system not needed and hyper realisim
@@kidomaruking35 the good news is we have bug fables able to carry the legacy of paper Mario.
0:40 having Scott say "Is Real Mario Depressed?" with Mario just staring lifelessly forward is so funny for some reason 😭💕
Love these review snippets. Have definitely looked up your Switch _____ Years In videos just to hear your thoughts on specific games that dropped that year.

I agree that modern paper mario would honestly be a lot better if they just ditched the turn based battles and did something like super paper mario. Hell, theres already bosses in origami king that are like that, and those are way more fun than the turn based battles.
fair point it might be interesting for the series too revert back too a platformer franchise again like what super paper mario did if there's no desire too keep making it a rpg series why not try platformers again their easier too make anyway it worked before
I dont think the turn based battles were the problem, more just how the mechanics function. I wish theyd just go back to traditional, which makes me very excited for Mario RPG coming out
@@superwario3644 I recommend Bug Fable, it's Paper Mario with cute bugs.
@catatonic165 Of course I want them to go back to a good rpg system, but the developers clearly don't so why even bother.
@@spennywenny I think paper Mario might be irrelevant now that we have Sparks of Hope and the remake to Mario RPG.
The desert part was my favorite! I was stuck for a while and had lots to explore.
It could have a level system of some kind where you unlock special moves over the course of the game. I thought that making a battle into a puzzle was a step in the right direction, but there’s not much variety as you recognize each enemy formation easily once you seen them all. If Origami King had special conditions for winning fights then it would have been much better. Let’s say there’s an elephant enemy, your goal is to lure in a mouse in front of it so the stone wall enemies get destroyed by the scared elephant to earn your way out.
I honestly loved The Origami King, I thought it was a really good game. The story was engaging, scenarios were all fun, and the world and art design were beautiful. I get why it turned some people off, but I wholeheartedly enjoyed it.
It feels so engaging and expansive and the humor is amazing. Such a creative game. The scenarios are amazing... it's honestly a great game.
Such a shame that the reason why still not as liked comes to the horrendous Sticker Star decisions.
Truly sad, because if we removed that garbage it could be at the level of the old ones.
Oh wow it's the guy who owns Origami King with a line!!
Someone got mad at me on twitter cuz I said the bosses being office supplies was lame. Like they were maaaaad. I did not care one bit
Origami King may not be for everyone but it was one of my favorite Switch games.
0:14 One of my favorite Scott screams 🤣
Origami King is weird. When it's good, it's REALLY good. Like "some of the best moments in Paper Mario history" levels of good. I'd argue the desert chapter is one of my favorites in the series.
But the lows really drag down what would've been a beloved classic otherwise.
Why are there no Odyssey characters? Why is the boss system different from everything else? Why limit yourselves to stupid limitations that do nothing but hurt the series?
Hopefully Super Mario RPG Remake shows Nintendo what fans want
Not Nintendo, Intelligent Systems with Tanabe as director. They work on the Franchise not Nintendo
Happy 3rd Anniversary to... whatever you were, Origami King...
As a fan of origami and Paper Mario, it was a mistake to not pick this up when GameStop had its funny Black Friday super sale for Switch games.
I enjoy how Paper Mario games all change so much from game to game. I think Paper Mario games are more like commentary on RPGs in general, not a genre of themselves. They deviate from the core RPG gameplay in bold ways that don't always feel perfect, but they do feel creative and thought out. High five for continually breaking the mold!
But I would still love another "core" Paper Mario game soon. Maybe a remaster of the first game as a buffer and a proper RPG to follow.
I mean Origami King still has great characters like Bobby and Olivia. It's just sad that because Bobby doesn't have an original design people hate him for it. You can tell this was developed separately from Odyssey though cause no elements from it appear at all. What I don't get is why they haven't use the extended Mario cast in Paper Mario games except Birdo. No Daisy, Rosalina, Donkey Kong, Wario. Heck add characters like Boom Boom or King Bob-Omb, if you don't want to use original characters the Mario series has a phephlora of them.
Also I agree Scott the modern Paper Mario games don't need to be an RPG anymore either. However I think the step in the right track is not making it an adventure game series, but an action RPG akin to Kingdom Hearts. It'd be like Super Paper Mario completely in 3D with fancier and improved combat and more balanced bosses.
I think that if there were more original characters elsewhere, Bobby being basic would be perfect. In fact, his name being Bob-omb instead of Bobby (which is actually the case) would be perfect. He has assigned himself to a disposable fate like the rest of his basic kind, living only to explode. It’s horrifically depressing. I love it.
But it's sad that the only characters we care about in these games is a character that dies and one that talks 70% of the game while other paper Mario's you cared for every unique character deeply
Now that I think about it, the fact that Gooper Blooper has appeared in Paper Mario twice but not characters like King Bob-Omb even once is kinda baffling.
And Petey Piranha too and those two are like the only reoccurring things from Sunshine in spinoffs. @@legoboy7107
I agree so much with this. Just make it an adventure game at this point. It's like they're trying to appease the older fans with these turn-based battles and RPG elements, but without actually putting any thought on how they fit the game. They just drag things down. As much as I want a new Paper Mario like the first two, I'd prefer if they went all the way with a new direction instead of this attempt at a middle ground.
Super Paper Mario had RPG elements, but they were pretty unintrusive and didn't interfere with the new things the game was doing. And people liked it, even though it was different. It was less divisive than the newer games. But hey, Origami King is a step in the right direction. It has a better story, beautiful, unique levels (a far cry from the NSMB-esque blandness of Sticker Star), and you can tell Intelligent Systems is trying their best to make it unique, given the limitations they're given (if that's even true, some people think those mandates aren't real). The gameplay is the main problem for me, and it's a biggie. Hopefully they sort it out.
Even for someone who’s so not into RPGs, hearing Scott say Paper Mario shouldn't have to be an RPG if the developers are feeling indecisive on Paper Mario’s future in the RPG department so bluntly was still kinda surprising
Man I wish they would remake TTYD or something.
well, good news
they're actually doing it
0:23 - They're mostly bound to using pre-existing characters and giving them very minor modifications (i.e. a clothes change is fine) or use new characters altogether and not use them again afterwards. There were still references to other non-NSMB enemies such as those bees from the Super Mario 3D series and Chargin' Chucks. Kinda wish they'd use more of those enemies though.
3:37 - At least a certain pair of scissors lets you fight them without exploiting its weakness ... although the fight itself is still really intense and focuses on precise timing and fake-outs.
4:10 - "Mario and Luigi served as the RPG companion ..." (in 2020) - this one actually makes me mad, considering ya know ... AlphaDream went bankrupt. It comes off as very tone-deaf. At least we're getting that Super Mario RPG remake soon.
4:25 - I was one of the few people who actually liked Super Paper Mario during the time it came out and I actually agree with you here. Paper Mario would be kinda cool as an "adventure" game without the pseudo-RPG elements. I felt like the regular battle system was kinda monotonous.
Holy sh*t, is that the game with the suicide bomber?
Yes
The Ending got me 😂
1:51 the ring is the stage where battles happen it dosen't have to do anything with the story
This game was honestly pretty good...also I don't get that whole thing about how much backtracking there is in the desert cause there is also lot of backtracking in other Paper Mario games. 😅
Travelling is easy in the desert section anyway with the Boot Car
I tried The Origami King earlier this year and the regular gameplay i thought was fine but i stopped playing after the bosses if every boss has a time limit and with a puzzle i could bot figure out to save my life i just stopped playing
This probably isn't going to change your mind but the time limit is only for the puzzle part
0:12 Very funny moment from this video!
The desert was one of my least favorite part because I had to look up how to do the ancient sand thing, and I also had to look up something for the submarine part too

I might forget how hard when I’m trying to collect all the sunshine at super Mario sunshine.
I might forget how tough when I trying to defeat secret final stage at 3D World.
But I will never forget how engaging and amazing the origami’s story is, far exceeded my expectations.
nobody tell Scott-in-the-past they’re returning Mario to his RPG roots with the legend of the seven stars remake
I miss the old Paper Mario, but its good to see that they're at least on the right tracks again
yeah
I mean, depending on your thoughts. I think that they're no closer than they've been since Sticker Star. They're about equal.
Tbh I'm done with the phrase " at least this is a good direction" because it excuses a game and series that has gone 3 games in a row making mediocre games. Color splash was a good direction, origami king was a good direction, how many games do the series need to actually be a good game?.
The game is just mediocre and that's it. I don't really have expectations for the next game to be any better tbh, not as long as the same people keep directing this series.
@@ICharlylPointing out how a game is closer to what some people want isn't excusing it, it's an observation on how many elements have come back. That way it can be logical to assume the next entry could be closer to past installments.
An example is back when the Metroid franchise was in its dark age due to Other M with Samus' characterization, and Federation Force not being the traditional experience fans were adjusted to, Samus Returns was seen as a step in that right direction to show there was still hope for the old components to make a comeback with a brand new entry, which was the case with Dread.
Pointing out how something is a step in the right direction is a way to tell the devs what the fans want. Pointing out the right stuff should be done just as much as pointing out the wrong stuff, things can't just be fully black and white.
@@WeskAlber I recommend Bug Fable, it's Paper Mario with cute bugs.

Yeah I feel the same.
TOK is just a niche game when it was clearly built to be enjoyed by everyone and keeps fumbling from awful design choices many people have been vocal about since Sticker Star.
Here's hoping the devs learnt their lesson with the next game.
I don't know if you can call Origami King niche when it's the best selling Paper Mario game.
@@stevoisiak A: It only sold well cause it was marketed decently on the Switch, and it's still on the lesser end of Mario releases there.
B: I'm speaking on a quality standpoint and it takes a certain mindset/appeal to enjoy this game when the first 3 were widely enjoyed.
Well, we have a chance that Nintendo actually talked with Intelligent Systems this time. TOK led the most polemics *by a long shot* , relatebly few people did care when CS came out, few compared when the first TOK trailer dropped. Of course, these frustrating interviews dont represent anything when we see all the creativity behind (even in TOK made a reference to the German Dictator in WWII, fun) these new games. And for the last reason, well, Mario RPG remake, and people seems to wait for it highly. So, if we have luck, we can have a real good and clean Paper Mario game this time, without poor battles systems and real creativity. This time they had to hear us.
"The first two games were the most consistently good"
I thought Scott wasn't an RPG guy...
Imagine how good they have to be for a Non RPG guy to like them
@@dieghautdeforme5049 Bro people use this as some catch-22, like ooo you aren't big on RPGs but like Paper Mario, such a casual. And it's like, I think the reason I love those games is the scope of the worlds, the characters, and the simple gameplay. It isn't some absurdly complex battle system like Xenoblade 2 or something, it's simple, and just makes sense. And at the end of the day, that's why I think Super Paper Mario is still on the same level as the first 2 games. It may not be an RPG, but it continues the trend of simple but rewarding gameplay, and has an even more grandiose story.
3 days after the anniversary, huh?
Atleast the soundtrack is dope.

Would have been cool if you just zoomed in the beginning to make it a "real" stand alone review
I agree, Color Splash was better. In fact it's overly criticized beyond belief. It clearly has got so much passion poured into it by the devs. I got a Wii U in 2016 because of how beautiful it looked in the trailer. I ended loving it for the non stop wacky humor, fantastic visuals, great music, varied themes of the levels. Toad(s) became my favorite Mario character(s) because of Color Splash (and OK) too. OK looks as good and is almost as funny, but it has the worst battle system of them all. I can now sympathize with TYD fans, going from Color Splash (one of my fave games) to getting a game that is great in all other ways except the battle system (OK). It's painful to not be able to enjoy it "all out". Hopefully the next game would be action/adventure as you say. No need for "fake-rpg" or puzzle combat.
This is an above average 6/10, probably 7/10 game but it is a 5/10 for anyone expecting a true back to its roots game.
I surprisingly loved origami king. The writing was really good and the exploration was fun. I actually kinda liked the fact you don’t level up from battles as there is no point in grinding which is the worst part of rpgs.
As someone who grew up playing TTYD , the origami king just didn’t do it for me. Tbh I thought it was a bad and boring game with an awful battle mechanic. It was beautifully made and had good dialogue but doesn’t compare to the older games at ll
This was my first Paper Mario game. Initially i like it. Everything was made of Paper, the battle system was and Olivia was just so adorable! But after 20 hours and finishing the Desert Level, i just lost complete interest. The battle system just became a chore and i activly avoided enemies and got really frustrated when i had to battle. And i never thought i would be SO annoyed an seeing regular Mario enemies like Goombas! I just wanted some original characters new to Mario universe! And yeah, i agree, they should just drop the turn based system all togheter! I could have enjoyed it then!
No one here is talking about how boring the 1000 hand system is
I really wanted to enjoy Origami King, but that combat system was so boring after the first couple of hours. And then the motivation for the villain at the end was so dumb, it felt like this whole journey was stupid, cause of how asinine the villains motives were.
I really hope Scott still does a Nintendo Switch 6 years in video, even if I just want to hear him complain about Nintendo Switch Sports and Mario Strikers Battle League
The combat system is pretty lame alright 🙊🤦♂️
The only thing that seems worthwhile from this game is the music. It's so much higher quality compared to the other games it makes me wish they accompanied a much better game, though. Aside from the music, the game looks super boring.
wii u fan says they like the wii u version better. that's it.
I loved Origami King. I can't wait for the next Paper Mario if the series continues the way it has been.
I will never be able to understand how anyone can simultaneously say they love this game while also admitting the battle system is AWFUL. Combat is like 33% of the entire game. How can you hate one third of a game and still claim that you love it? Reminds me of bad IGN reviewers where they spend the majority of the video talking about how awful a game is, but they somehow still give it a 9/10 score. Origami King is trash, same as Sticker Star and Color Splash.
Easy, because It highs are very high in general, the world building, the music, the environments, and because the Battle system isn't nearly as awful as Sticker Star.
I may dislike TOK Battle system, but It has rescatable sections. In SS I tell you, im currently playing it and in the final Boss, and sometimes the fights seems directly like an insult, specially in the final Boss.
I found TOK bosses somewhat enjoyable, but in the others games? Seems like a f*cking Gate thats say "or you use X thing and trivialize the fight or you are not gonna win lmfao"
Well, because the combat is much better, while is not as good combat.
Agreed. The battle system being as atrocious and unfun as it is completely ruins the game. It's like having a meal made from a 5 star restaurant with the main course being a log of poop.
I think people should look at this game for what it was trying to be rather than what people wanted it to be (looking at you, Arlo) there are definite flaws about the game, such as it’s combat, but the game has so much charm and memorable moments as well as surprisingly great writing that I think it’s possible to look past it’s flaws and appreciate it for the game it is
I agree 100%. I know people are passionate about the first two games, but I feel like if people gave Origami King a genuine chance, they'd see that is has a lot more going for it than against it.
The story and character writing are right up there with the best of the Mario rpg games in my opinion. Had this used combat similar to the first two paper Mario games I think it would have received fairly universal praise.
I think it should be looked at for what it is; trying to please everyone when everyone would be pleased had they not shifted so hard in the first place. There's a lot to love, but if you have to ignore the steps that came before just to see it that way, what's the point?
@@lukebytes5366I think the point is that it’s not trying to be like the other games, it doesn’t connect in my way outside a reference or two. It tells its own story and does it’s own thing, it’s fine to want the would style back but if you’re judging this game you can’t (or shouldn’t) give it a lower score simply because it’s not like the first two games. If you’re going to criticize it, criticize it on the things it actually does wrong as a game itself, like how the combat isn’t amazing and stuff like that, not just “combat isn’t like first two so it’s bad”
I'm trying to say this in the nicest way I can, but I really think you aren't paying attention if you think the majority of people don't give it a chance. I can separate my preconceived notions of what paper mario is and still love Super Paper Mario, but here's the difference. I'll throw away any desire of unique and interesting character designs. I'll throw away any desire of wanting an RPG system. I'll throw away any desire of wanting a grandiose action adventure story. Looking at it on their own merits, I see all three of these games as fundamentally flawed in terms of gameplay. Sticker Star with its absolutely ludicrous Sticker progression system, feel like I don't really have to explain why that's bad, but I will. Insane to me that it is a game that uses turn based battles than can be walked past, because there is no incentive to do them. But even worse, the Sticker system is just horrible. Flipping through the book, it just sucks. But by far the worst part is needing a specific, unspecified Sticker to "fight" a boss, where you either don't have, and lose, or you have it, and you automatically win. It's dumb.
Color Splash: here we have the same largely pointless turn based gameplay, with barely any incentive beyond leveling up hammer paint. Just an absolutely dumb thing to base your core gameplay on.
Origami King. Same problem. Granted, they actually make some fights *gasp* required for progression, other than those, it's the same story. Skip over everything, because engaging with the battle system becomes tedious and is completely pointless.
Like I'm sorry, that's just the way I see it, and I'm trying to have as little bias as possible here. I just think on a fundamental level this game design is unrewarding and deeply flawed. It's just crazy to me that you're saying Arlo didn't objectively look at all of these games. Both when color splash released, and with oragami king, there's a big section where he talks about how he's trying to look how these game stack up on their own. But it's just insane to me, that as much as they want to seemingly do something new, they also want to stick to older design elements but do them worse. I just don't get it.
I'm not trying to antagonize anybody that likes these games. Like, who cares, it's an opinion. But I think it's kind of disingenuous of you to label others into a group that is completely biased toward wanting a traditional experience. Hell, I'm a guy that likes Adventure of Link more than Zelda 1, if a game captures my attention and I think it's fun, I don't care what franchise it's in. I'll be willing to play it, and maybe love it. Origami King just isn't that for me.
don't trust a Nintendo to do a bug's job
I REALLY love Paper Mario: The Origami King, so hearing Scott only sh*t on it whenever it's mentioned really hurts.... But I could never hate Scott
Hello fellow Origami King lover

This was the first Paper Mario I've ever played and I really enjoyed it. Even cried at a couple points.
I understand the complaints with Origami King but I absolutely loved the game
Wooooo 🥳
They should’ve just taken the overworld fights from this game, expanded on them, and make that the battle system. I’m 100% in agreement with Scott here. We don’t need a third PM game in the style of the first two. We need a game that is doing it’s own thing instead of trying to take small steps back toward the original games. I would be much more happy if PM was a straight up Action/Adventure game and embraced that with the charm and characters that people come to expect from this series.
I do think a Third PM in the style of the first two would work, but yah pick a side. Either go back to what worked, or try something truly new, stop pussy footing.
people shit on origami king too much its an amazing game
Paper Mario be so quirkyyyyyyy hahahaha.... :/
Forgive me for thinking this was the most engaging Mario experience in the Switch. So much so that I can forget about the boss battle system which I found more confusing and tedious than the regular battle ... the scenery, the characters, the path ahead, the semi temple, the ocean and all its islands, the boat, man! The desert.... the hilarious humor! ... that Japanese theater, the Olympus area... c'mon... it's so immersive and feels so expansive, and crazily creative! Much more than something like Odyssey.
I absolutely fucking hate the combat system in this game. It’s the most infuriating and stupid thing I’ve ever seen in a game.
Imo, this had the potential to be one of the best PM games so far... Just the number one thing was this awful battle system. I know they were trying something new, but I have seen very few people say they actually like it.
Although it's kind of a goofy storyline, I do think it had one of the best scripts in the series. I just wish it went back to where you have the option to switch back and forth between partners, and actually being able to control them.
My final complaint is that the majority of bosses are objects... it goes with the theme, sure. But I miss the variety of bosses we got from the OG games. And if the battle system wasn't already bad enough, trying to follow all the arrows and make sure everything is lined up in time was so frustrating. I kept wasting coins just so the Toads would show me where to go, so I kind of felt like I was cheating my way through the game.
