  • I have owned a lot of Harley's since the early 2000's and it takes forever to understand the tuning debacle that is making your bike run right with exhaust and intakes. In this video we go through the history of what the issues are, how to get past them, and my favorite tuner for the dedicated shadetree mechanic - the ‪@vanceandhines‬ FP3. Thanks again to ‪@DennisKirk‬ for getting my mapping question answered for me!!!

    They sent me a tune for my Stage One 2010 Ultra Classic last year. Worked out great! They suggested setting the Throttle Progressivity to Aggressive. That alone made a huge difference in drivability. She was a bit of a slug before the tune. Now she rocks!

    The previously married FP3s are still useful to check engine temps on any other bike you can plug them into. It’s good to see and learn what’s “normal” for your engine at various ambient temps and loads. For example, sumping is going to spike your engine temp. Good to have a baseline so that you know when something is out of wack.

    I did 3 auto tune sessions with my bike. Each time it got better. I’m pretty happy with the FP3. It’s easy and simple to use. I agree that if you are just doing a stage one (intake and exhaust) this is the perfect tuner. If you are doing anything above the stage one you need a more complete tuner and for folks who don’t understand fuel ratios a guy who is knowledgeable on a dyno and the tuner you choose. Great stuff. 👍

    Very noticeable how much smoother my bike ran with this FP3. From the very first startup after installing the correct map, you can tell it's smoother and running better. I've had a good experience with the FP3 and I recommend it also. Great vid.

    In the “view sensor data” screens- touch one of the 5 indicators. A menu will come up that allows you to change the layout. I program all 4 pages of “gages”.
    I like the FP3 a lot. Runs far better (full stage II) than it did with the $400 Dyno tune it had. I spent some time on the phone with V&H and they can monitor your bike while running. The support from them is amazing. Auto tune did nothing for me. Their canned tune with over the phone tweaks nailed it.
    Be sure to play with throttle progressivty. Changes the whole personality of the engine.
    I even have a “rain” tune I can switch to. It limits throttle in low gears and lower redline in low gears.
    Unlimited possibilities for custom tweaks on there. Change warmup schedule, idle speed, redline, etc. I really like the gages. Even reads TQ and HP. With the Dyno tune installed TQ and HP read exactly what the Dyno sheet shows. The V&H Tune shows 8 more HP and 12 lbs TQ increase. Runs smoother, no pop now and noticeable better power. I tell my Harley buddies it runs like a Honda now! They go into spastic convulsions.

    All good info. Yes, that's the first thing I did once my 2 years were up., Harley high flow, and V&H tuner and slip ons. Wasn't expecting much improvement in performance, mainly sound and looks. But what a night and day difference. The 1st time I kicked into second it was like a completely different motorcycle in terms of acceleration. And 0 to 70 was effortless and smooth whereas before the bike seemed to be "working" to get there. Best upgrade I've made so far. Thanks for a great vid.

    Decel pop, that's an option to use after you've tested the new map. It was the old Screamin' Eagle map that had this issue, not the new installed map.
    For autotuning, you don't need to watch your phone. I recommend doing first a full tank of gas, stopping every 15-30 minutes and writing the changes made and repeat. Because there is only narrowband 02 sensors, it needs to repeat the process over and over to get it correctly. Personally I'd say spend two tanks of gas doing this, to get a really smooth map. IF you decide to use a different octane, that like a different intake or different exhaust, will not run perfect anymore with your tune...

    I have the orange racing tuner on my 07 Sportster that I recently sold. It was the only way to get the engine to run straight pipe.
    The nice thing about it is that you only needed to run it on a dyno once, afterwards the ECM tuned itself.

I installed a Cobra Power Flo air cleaner and remapped for the new air cleaner and the difference was very noticeable (seat of the pants feel).     Good informative video. I like using the V&H tuner. I installed one on my "then" new 2012 FLHX & running good today. I wish I had numbers to prove the upgraded tune, but I don't. I go by feel, sound, temperature & reading my plugs. Most people that bash the FP 3 seem to be the people that tune for a living. I get it... You told it like it is. A stock engine with a stage 1 being tuned on a dyno doesn't make good sense. Note;
    I have never run the autotune!
    I guess that I felt good with the can map, so I didn't see a need.

    • @ProfessionalMonkey

    Hey Monkey, I just found your content and enjoy the knowledge with some humor approach haha, I know it's going to help me. I own a 2020 FXFBS Fat Bob Milwaukee-Eight 114 that has been mainly stock until a few months ago. I first bought and (dealer) installed V&H Hi-flow slip ons for better sound and flow, and shortly after realized it wasn't enough for what I was looking for performance wise. A couple weeks ago I decided to purchase a V&H PCX Upsweep 2:1 and have HD Service install it along with a Stage II cam upgrade. I decided against their screaming eagle tuner and bought my own FP3 which I have been trying to auto tune myself (it's taking longer than expected). I still have the stock air intake though, as they had originally told me it was high flow and didn't need replacement. I know it is running rich because my bike is throwing a code and the tuner tells me (along with it glowing and popping flames at times at least in idle). Should I purchase a better air intake and scrap my current auto tune which is still in progress? Or just put another standard tune on it, or take it to the professionals to tune?? Thanks again for your content, I don't know much about it I'm just an enthusiast who loves to ride when I can and upgrade where I can.

    • @ProfessionalMonkey
      @ProfessionalMonkey  Před 11 měsíci

      Hey!!! It’s running lean, not rich. The intake is high flow so that’s fine. I think your tuner is your problem. The FP3 is good for stage 1, but not enough or at least difficult to use for stage 2 and above. I’d see if there is a professional tuner out there that uses the FP3 and see if they can work it out; or you may need to go with a better tuner. Either way having it professionally tuned is gonna fix your issue. Welcome aboard!

    I am so glad when I get done gapping my plugs and jetting the carb. When 1965 rolled out the new Panhead with electric starter, they also began using an auto advance ignition. My cousin who first bought that 65 Electro Glide hated the auto advance. He'd wrecked his 64, so he took off the beach bars and distributer and put them on his new 65 Pan Head Electro Glide.
    When I turned 16 and bought the bike, that's what I spent decades riding and wrenching on. No, to this day my bike doesn't have a button on the bars to start it. The starter is there completely unused.
    Mr. Monkey, I appreciate you, your knowledge and your Lovely Ladies. But as I live and breathe, I'll never have to tune a bike with my smart? phone!
    For those who bad mouth you, I'll pray they drop off the planet. I live peacefully knowing they could never kickstart my favorite bike, clutch with their foot and shift by the tank through only four gears while adjusting the timing with their left grip.

      If you are going to change both intake and exhaust to move more air, then I would recommend a tune to compensate for the added air flow through the engine. Which tuner is the big debate. I always recommend powervision but others will say differently. Do your research, and you will find a vast majority of pro tuners also recommend powervision in thier shops. Also year of bike is important

    Great video, thanks for taking the time to make it. Does that tuner get the big jugs sauced up and flashing? If so, I'll pick one up. Wait, we're talking about bikes right?

    Hi buddy. I love this channel. You are so real and genuine. I don’t know much about how the engine works but I’m trying to learn. I’ve got a 2015 Street Glide Special that I put SE high flow intake and Bassani exhaust. Should I have the bike tuned or re tuned? What will it do to the performance? Thanks

    • @ProfessionalMonkey
      @ProfessionalMonkey  Před 2 lety +1

      If it was a stock air cleaner before it needs to be tuned. It will need fuel added to the mix to make the bike run right.

    I know this was a while ago so I hope you get it. I got a Arlen Ness intake and Vance n Hines not full pipes but the add-ons on my Heritage and it sounds great. A bike mechanic did it for me, not a dealer. Was any kind of tune up necessary. He said no so I guess your my second opinion. I love it please dont get me wrong

    • @ProfessionalMonkey
      @ProfessionalMonkey  Před 2 lety

      Hi! If your bike had a completely stock air cleaner before, and then you added the Arlen Ness high flow air cleaner you need a tune. If the bike already had a high flow air cleaner then it is fine.

      @@ProfessionalMonkey ok the guy that works on my bike is an old biker and I said I need a tune up , I can even tell now. I'm getting new rubber on next weekend and I said why dont I just get a tune up while I'm there. He says no I will put new plugs in and you'll be fine. So if that's the case why didn't he do it in the first place and is that all you have to do for a tune up is change a couple plugs ? I dont wanna offend if u get my drift but I do want ammo in my knowledge so I can use it carefully. I know you understand that.

    Did it stop the decel pop? That's cool that you can check your battery voltage on that app. It gets tricky when you're trying to use a multimeter to get a battery reading while riding the bike. I usually hook the alligator clips to the battery terminals then tape the multimeter to the gas tank and go for a ride.

    Vance &hines use wide band sensors on thier dyno for their maps most bikes wont benefit from a auto tune session. But you can always try and see which works best for your bike

The thundermax is also able to be swapped to a different bike i believe . Its not vin. Specific . Just found your channel also and like the "common sense" advice for the newbs .

    When my 2014 XL1200T went out of warrantee added V&H twin slash, high flow intake and the FP3. I loved the FP3 and left it plugged in. Initially had a problem that V&H cleared up in one phone call. Loved the features of the FP3.
    Now with my 2019 FXLR I have all Scremin’ Eagle upgrades including the hiflow intake, street cannons, torque cam, hiflow intake manifold, street tuner and the auto tuner with the large oxygen sensors. Got the extended warrantee with it all.
    Still miss my FP3!

    I'm fairly sure that changing the decel pop in the app adds decel pop to the tune. I don't think it matters if the bike previously decel popped badly as the new map wouldn't not have had the issue as the previous tune. This is at least how it was on my 16 SGS when I changed the decel pop wheel.

  • @proamericanstoptyranny1260

    Just a little info on the power commander technically u don't need to take it to a tuner. U can actually change the numbers in a given box and change the timing. As where the fp3 this can't be done. Either Vance and Hines has to send a map or u take it to a tuner also. Any map can be altered with the power commander with a laptop. Power commander and fp3 both are fantastic tuners. I chose power commander 5 because i wanted to learn how to tune my own stuff. Power commander is the cheapest way in my opinion to this. Thunder max tuners are expensive but they give the user the most accessability and completely change out the factory ECU

    Totally agree with High Flo or not, enough air or not enough air. I use the Power Vision with Target tune which uses wide band 02 sensors. I believe it is as close as I can get without paying someone to dial it in with a dyno for me. Couple auto tune sessions and it runs fantastic. I bought my 2017 Ultra limited M8 107 with screaming eagle slip-ons, SE cams, SE tuner because it was under warranty. I change it immediately to Power vision, Vance and hines slip-ons, Bassani head pipe, S&S cam with the cam chest kit from S&S and it runs fantastic now. Fuck the warranty it is shit anyway. I think the most restrictive thing on the factory bike is the dam catalytic converter.

    I found my Sporty was running hot after using the premade FP4 map. Autotune brought the temps down to a more reasonable level. In my case, I think the higher elevation (CO) was to blame. Dont think V&H takes higher altitudes into account.
