I just dont understand how anyone can call the Philippines a paradise from what I’ve seen the infrastructure looks like it never made it past the 70’s and with almost daily brownouts I could never deal with that.From what I understand the food is also subpar….

Your milage may very... It really depends on where you are. It's a problem in some places, not others. Before you commit to a location, you need to spend a bit of time there testing the waters. If the specific location is an issue, pick another where they don't.
I live here and I'm considering moving back to the US . Things like poor infrastructure and the food sucks for the most part. It is also not easy to travel anywhere. A lot of the people aren't as friendly as the CZcamsrs say, and they will take advantage of you if you let them.

For me, I decided to move to Thailand when I retired. The infrastructure, food, and medical care are much better for the same cost of living.

@@mikesphilippineretirement Dual Citizenship just as "most" celebrities have it with a host of other countries. You do not have to give up your U.S. Citizenship. Mexico Citizenship has become extremely desirable nowadays with Americans.
@@joebidet2050Actually you have to have worked and paid Thai taxes for at least three years. After that, there are a number of things you have to have done with a point system. Almost no expats bother to go for either permanent residency or citizenship. There is a Facebook group dedicated to helping expats on doing this. I came to Thailand as a retiree. I’ve never worked here and paid taxes so lost interest in permanent residency. If you meet the financial requirements then it is incredibly easy to live here indefinitely as a retiree.

Had a friend go there met a girl thought about moving but he said he just can't take the backwardness of the phillipines.
He said he can't handle that Filipinos accept mediocrity and never strive for improvement.
He can't handle that customer service doesn't exist there.
And he said he was scammed to much.
These things are all true to a point I believe and definitely holding the phillipines back but there is also a lot if beauty there and kind and generous people!
Think that is the key, comfort. Home is very comfortable and the Philippines is very uncomfortable. Visiting the Philippines at this moment and oh how uncomfortable I am. Crowded roads, no free beaches, pay for everything and poor food choices. The price I am paying for marrying a Philippina, the best thing I ever did but having to visit family is taking its toll.

Not to mention the rising costs of living. This trip is I compare to those 6 and 9 years ago. The biggest thing I notice is the lack of foreigners in places like Subic and the rise of the middle class Phillipines demonstrated by the explosion of modern automobiles totally clogging the roads everywhere. Nothing moves at peak hours and the congestion goes on for hours. An absolute misery to own and operate a car here. I find it difficult to accept how long it takes to go any distance compared to Western countries and particularly mine Rural Australia. Food is the same price now as in Australia so given all of this moving to live in the Phillipines is definitely a no no. My advice is get your girl and get out ASAP.

Been watching the early vloggers like Bud Brown, who is now in the USA, Reekay, since he landed in Mactan and then went too Bohol, Ned, since he has been living in the pink house, Mike journey in the Philippines (rest in peace). Since they started. Plus, a lot of the newer vloggers. Planning is the key to being successful. I like vloggers who inform on what you are going to need to prepare for in the Philippines. These types of vloggers have a lot of valuable information.
Mike is great, and so is Calvin Roach (Sunshine Shoulders). They both are boots-on-the-ground warts-and-all presenters.
For me, the heat and the noise seems to be the main issue. I could get rid of all of my stuff, I hardly see my daughter, and I have no close friends, so getting married is my number one attraction.

To me, the hardest part is letting go of my "stuff". I'm so spoiled here in the US. 5 bedroom home in upscale neighborhood, high-end red sports car, Harley, push button convenience of same day or next day delivery by Amazon...
When I did my pre-pack, it was alarming how little actually fits in the suitcases.
American culture is rabid consumerism. You need to adjust to a minimalist mindset, and DO NOT underestimate the planning/prep time. You will need at least 6-12 months to plan and organize everything.

.. No need to let go of a nice house. When we moved to Quezon City, Metro Manila in June 2009. We bought a 3 Story TownHouse 5 BR, 3BT, Parlor, 2 Maid/Houskeeper Quarters and a POOL ON THE ROOF DECK! Total COST CASH was $21,739 (P1,087,952+-) Lock/Stock and Keys. In 2014 we bought 15 Lots in Sagay City Center Subd. in Sagay City, Negros Occidental for $600 each, $9,192 (P487,000+-). Try and buy ONE Lot in a US City for $9,000... hehehe.
When we moved from St. Louis to Metro Manila on June 11, 2009. We sent 38 "FOREX" Gumbo Boxes and one 20' Container, ($6,500+-). Takes about 6 weeks for the stuff to arrive. My Harley took about 3 months (1 month just to clear Customes... hehehe). One of our Relatives is a Motorcycle Importer in Manila. Found out about HALF the stuff we sent, could have gotten there NEW for less... hahaha

I’ve always had an interest in how other people choose to live. So I watch videos about all kinds of lifestyles. RV living, people living in their car, living on boats, homesteading, preppers, etc.

One reason is other options to go to closer foreign countries. Cancun is a 75 minute flight from where I live. The Fort Lauderdale port for cruising the Carribean is 6 miles from my home. Flights to most Central and South American countries are 2-6 hours away from me. Many countries the people speak English and the rental prices are quite reasonable in cost. All of these countries are welcoming to spend a couple of months with no hassles. Many would love to have you there full time. In these instances you don't have to move or ship items. The Philippines has a lot of issues and infrastructure issues. Many times you are walking on egg shells. That makes the Philippines a 1-2 month visiting vacations because there are no direct flights except from LA and San Francisco.
If I were married, the Lake Chapala region outside Guadalajara would be my first choice. The Philippines interest me mainly because I could get married again.

I've taken the decision to plan to move out there gradually this year. Will be 4 visits in total, increasing the duration each time. It's just to find out if I can get on with the climate, food, way of life etc. Also sorting out banking and medical care are biggies. Will only rent out there as I have a house at home I will have to decide whether to rent it out as well.

I did make the move, but I chose Thailand instead. I do plan to take a peek at The Philippines for a few weeks to compare the two for future reference. To me the BIG advantage for The Philippines is the US dollar plays better there & more English being spoken. I could have gone there, but I didn't. After researching it, it became my plan B - not because it was bad, but because I saw Thailand as more 'modern' on important issues. The language part is the hardest, but I hope to learn a functional amount of the language. Until then, Google Translate gets me through the day when needed.

Hey Mike, I just returned from 10 days in the Philippines, went to Cebu and Dunaguete. I had a great time and loved it, the people are friendly and the women are beautiful. Sure there are issues with infrastructure and most places are not as nice as in the US, but it is a different more laid back mindset, than life in the west. People are Wayy more friendly and respectful and dont get upset at stupid things like in the west.
I am 51 and looking to retire there in 2.5 years. I could never achieve that here, I would have to work at least another 11 years if I stay. I'm not going to do that, if I can save enough to retire at 54, in the Philippines, instead of 62 in the US, it's a no brainer for me. I also met an amazing 28 year old filipina while I was there. It was the best trip of my life! Will be back before the end of the year for another visit. I like your content, keep it coming.
I can understand all the reasons you have given, it is hard to do what is needed. Another reason is that you have enough income and savings that you can stay in your own country comfortably and don't need to move to live a good life. I live in sunny Florida and have been retired for 20 years now and have no shortage of funds to live a great live, I have no desire to move to the Philippines but do enjoy visits there, and will be back again in June for yet another visit.

I have visited for a month at a time when I was in my mid 40s. I met my wife there and brought her to the USA. We have a daughter that is 15 years old and she does not want to move back. I also have some health problems that keep us from moving as well. I need to find a doctor that treats diabetic retinopathy that needs injections in my eyes. I hope to visit again after my daughter gets old enough to spend a month or 2 alone. We already have a home in Angeles City and some property in Palawan. And I have enough income to keep a house in the USA and 1 in the Philippines.

good video and good advice personally I would come there for a visit and maybe extend online a time or two but I would keep my house and bank accounts and everything as they are in the US as I think it makes things easier in terms of getting your social security overseas and not have to proove proof of life and all that stuff and just use a mail forwarding service of have someone take care of my house while away. As you said before always leave yourself an out...if you sell everything and decide you want to go back you have nowhere to go....

Great video Mike. I think very useful tips. I would highly recommend a two month visit and money to visit several islands like Cebu, Iloilo and Davao.
Do your research. Three hour flight to Bangkok/Pattaya from Manila. Airfare is cheaper if you book 30 days in advance or look for promo's.
Consider booking a hotel room with Microwave and fridge. Dont need to eat out everyday. Explore on foot, by taxi or bus. So many people here will help you along the way. Best part is, its an easy way to meet people.
Before you sell everything, make sure you can live without all the toys and gadgets. It's a simpler lifestyle here in Southeast Asia. Electronic devices are more expensive. Have Fun & Be Safe 😊

I have a question, I have never been out of town by myself, I married young and only traveled with the 2 ex-wives. I only went to Mexico or the Caribbean. I have my passport already, I just wanted to know how long would you recommend I should stay for the first time ever going to the Philippines or Thailand. I have been researching like crazy, but I know nothing will truly prepare you for the real thing. Do you have a list that you may think I should be asking myself on what to look for while I am there. I have my own ideas and list but it's different coming from you can really help. Even though I am at least a year out, I am selling things already except my main work transportation and my house. I was planning on been there for my first visit in November of 2023 , but in April of 2023 got hurt at work and had to cancel my trip . My goal is to be there in December 1 2024 , I have to wait on my shoulder and knee replacement surgery from the accident to heal good enough to travel . Everything you mentioned Mike is something you must deal with before you can go. My only regret is not jut going quicker instead of planning it all out . Life is to short not to try something just because it’s not convenient or comfortable to do.

Vaccine planning - many vaccines require 2 or more doses spaced months apart. Start early for vaccine planning. Not all vaccines are available overseas. I had to get the Shingrix vaccine in the US because it was not available in Thailand.

A group of old Air Force buddies cancelled our reunion due to the price of airfare. I myself plan on moving back to the States after 16 years here. My first vacation here had a few fun moments but for the most part, not enjoyable for me. Took my son to Oregon and Washington on vacation 5 years ago and he still talks about how much better it was than Bohol.

Another angle is buying and renting out houses etc in USA and living in the countryside in Philippines which is cheaper than the big cities that way you get the relatively passive income from USA rentals and live in the less expensive countryside in the Philippines. Just a thought

I rent out individual rooms in USA all I would do is get a property manager so I have a back up plan for dissatisfaction in the Philippines. No loss of home or possessions. Less stress in the decision making process. I would stay 6 months in the Philippines to see if it is for me in a large city renting a place
Been to PH twice. I think if they even show up, it's a massive lifestyle/comfort change for a lot of guys. For me, I know I'd have to have a super western-style condo/lifestyle in PH for at least a couple years

I been married to my Filipino wife for almost 16 years and she been here with me. I have my father in law is building my home and it will be paid in full by the time l move. I think people should have a plan before they move, As they say, be prepared. Every month we send a box of things we may need, cost only 100.00 a month. I must say, your blog today is so true. the biggies for me Mike are family and medicare. those two things keep me here in the good ole USA. last fall i received 20 radiation treatments for prostate cancer. the cost for that was $175,000. medicare covered most of it. ive had other health problems too. that medicare is golden Mike. also i own my home free and clear. i live here for property taxes, insurance and utilities... about $800 per month. i watch your vids and enjoy the Philippines experience thru you vicariously. take us around on location occasionally. show us what Dumaguete looks like. i wanna see the expats at the coffee places too😊

In Dumagete I found coconuts for 25 pesos in 3 different places. In Cebu it's 40-50 pesos.
I had a haircut in downtown Dumagete for 70 pesos.
It's 300+ here in Cebu.
The peso has gone up 1.21$2 in the last 30 days! U.S. dollar is having some problems now. Current rate p56.57 at 4/13 8pm.
Ive been asked by my son why not move to the Philippines cause he observed I was more happier there than over here. I did enjoy myself during my time there in January then came back. I look back and told mysel Im not ready to live there full time perhaps divide my time between the 2 countries. Currently Im in ldr and will be coming there next month. I badly needed to live the remaining days if my life there but felt insecure of encountering health issues although I could use the VA in Manila as a primary medical provider to me. Ive been to the VA Manila when I ran out of medications and was immediately assigned a primary physician and given a health exam lol. I want to bring my ldr gf to the US and split our living arrangement between the US and Philippines. I want to have a home when I return here I have a place to stay.

Paid for your right it took actually more than a year before my wife of 12 years were able to make the move, far better cost of living, only food internet power. We’re in the province.I bought a motorcycle . I couldn’t be happier
I actually decided not to live in the Philippines just by listening to several vloggers. I still want to visit and I still enjoy the videos but I already decided I want a certain level of infrastructure and ability to get things done in a reasonable time etc.
I’m currently looking into Panama and Ecuador.

What's so bad about staying home if that's where your heart is at? I've lived here in the Phillipines for over a year now. Some days it seems like paradise, other days anything but paradise. The big attraction for me is the lower cost of living, I also enjoy the tropical weather. I'm fortunate to be able to go back to the states every 6 months or so which is a big deal to me.

Its a 3rd world country, beautiful women are one thing but living in the PI and being a second class citizen there is not ideal.

You have to give up a lot to move philippines including medicare kids grandkids hobbys on and on most pull trigger for cost of living . i cant sale my 34 chevy coupe street rod nor do my kids want to sale they want that car i will mis it like them.my daugher will live in main house store my car pay tax insurance on house i will sale my rental to build in philippines at some point i may sale main house if my kid dont pay tax insurance on it about 4200 a year

I emptied my storage unit in Texas before I moved to the Philippines. I sold, tossed, and then put the rest into 4 balikbayan boxes to ship to the Philippines. It's such a relief not having to worry about dealing with a storage unit anymore. Guys just have to be realistic about what their old stuff is worth and the fact that most of it isn't worth much at all. Facebook Marketplace is a reality check.
Alot of trouble to get there . I love on east coast of America and need to hop planes and do alot of things to prepare .

I have spent 12 months in the Philippines my gf lives in Ozamis I was bored stiff I could only take 2 weeks at a time because I love the options of a big city. I bad wifi is every where plus brown outs. The filipino food is not what I like. So many pork dishes and I don't like pork. Lack of variety of food choices in grocery stores I ask people if back in the USA you know where to find Mexican, Thai, Greek , Italian, American restaurants but where can you find filipino food ?? Almost no where
I think some guys will find it hard to adjust after being accustomed to the American lifestyle. Coming to the Philippines means slowing down for many. Not everyone wants to relax.

The facts are, philippines has many problems as other countries.
The main reason foreigners decide to come live here.
Rents , Housing are more affordable.
Food is and has become very expensive.
If people weigh USA to Phil.
Usa beats Phil. Hands down.

Most men who go to the Philippines do so for female companionship.most men are older and dont want to live alone and with western women wanting to be the man .for older men finding an honest women in the western countries is a no go .as an australian im pretty lucky im not desperate enough to go live in a third world and have to deal with changing goverment laws on foreigners. If i cant own the land my house is built on then its a no go for me .

As an American who moved to the Philippines in 2011 to be with my new filipina girlfriend I found online, I can say that I loved my nearly 3 years in the Philippines as she and I traveled the country. I learned to tolerate the lack of customer service, slow Internet, horrible roads, brownouts, typhoons, flooding, earthquakes and below average food, and agree with the waiter at our restaurant who after an earthquake, turned to us with a smile and say, “It’s more fun in the Philippines!”

But i just don't see how the Philippines compare to Thailand.
For me Thailand has much better infrastructure. Better accommodation options better food option's better medical care. I also think that the Thais are more friendly and helpful.
Mostly things are cheaper in Thailand too.
To be honest I have not found the philippino people overly friendly.
Admittedly i have only been to Cebu and Angeles.
Just the way i see it

I'm 83 Work/ 118 Work Days until Retirement. Another 60ish days until I leave for the Philippines. My Wise Card came yesterday. Waiting for my Passport. 1st low-fee Bank set up. Working on my Civil Service Retirement packet this weekend. Xoom Setup done. To do: Another Remittance Service. Every couple days I complete a few more items on my checklist & ADD MORE. Goal: October 15th Cebu City.

I am worried about global warming, if it gets much hotter there, it will be unlivable.
One of the reasons moving to the Philippines is enticing to me is because of the lower cost of living. I don't know if I'll ever be able to afford to retire living in the US. But part of me sees moving to the Philippines as a way to run from my problems. That's not healthy. Ideally, I should be working to fix the problems.
I just got back two days ago after spending a month in the Philippines. It is a big culture shock for most Americans. Daily brown outs, limited AC, humidity , questionable food, cars are only for the rich. Driving is best left to the locals , there seems to be no laws. My debit cards never worked, my credit card did. Beware airport taxis , they tend to charge very high rates, hotels in reality are not like their brochures …the list goes on and on. I will visit occasionally, but never permanently reside there.
I have unlimited a/c no Daily brown out but we do get them. Explain why your debit card did not work?

Lets be honest - as far as the food quality, internet, public transportation, medical infrastructure, housing, proximity to swimmable beaches, cleanliness, culture centered around health and fitness - places like Thailand and Vietnam are about 100 years ahead of the Philippines, and they are significantly CHEAPER to live than the Philippines.
And I say this as a die hard fan of PH and I live in Cebu.
People come to the Philippines for two reasons and two reasons only - generous tourist Visa policy and the girls. That's it. The other countries handedly are miles ahead
