Collecting the Most OUTRAGEOUS New Car EVER! The Very Last Lotus Elise Cup 250 Final Edition

- This car is beyond outrageous! Join me to collect the very last Lotus Elise EVER, this absolutely insane Elise Cup 250 Final Edition in Luminous Orange (RAL 2005), and bringing it back to @TheShmuseum. I've never, ever seen a colour like it on a car!
My friend, whose privacy will be respected, is the owner of this truly unique piece of history in the form of the very last Lotus Elise, a car that has been quite a project in its own right. After a 25 year production run, the Elise has been a mainstay for Lotus and a huge responsibility for the company's success over time, but now we arrive at the end and what a way to send it off.
The Elise Cup 250 Final Edition itself is the last send off for the Lotus Elise model, the final dynamic derivative with 250hp from the 1.8l supercharged 4-cylinder engine, stripped weight down to just 931kg, and a host of aero upgrades on the exterior. However, with this car it's all about the specification and the absolutely ludicrous paintwork of this final car. Officially it is called Luminous Orange (RAL 2005), which was first used by Lotus for their Indycars in the late 1960s, before it also featured on the prototypes of the Lancia Stratos and Porsche 911 2.7 RS. It's a 14 layer paint process, and in some countries is even illegal due to being reserved for emergency services only due to quite how bright and outrageous it actually appears.
For the collection, we're heading to Bell & Colvill, the very same company responsible for delivering the first ever Elise S1 back at the start of production, and now also the very last ever Elise Cup 250 Final Edition to bookend this fabulous story. You may remember I actually filmed and announced the spec for my inbound Lotus Emira First Edition from their other showroom in fact, the car of which I'll take delivery of in approximately 2 months.
My friend has very kindly invited me to be the custodian of this car for the time being, from collection and running it in, to sharing these experiences with you. He's keen that the car is not a garage queen and it will be both enjoyed and shared with many, to appreciate the story and what it represents. This means you'll be seeing a lot of it at The Shmuseum and in videos to come!

I literally can imagine how they finished the last Elise perfectly and then loosened it to fulfill their heritage.
It's not a loose screw, it's holding in all the added lightness!

I am a huge Lotus fan. I own two, including a very rare '08 Lotus Europa. But a paint that you have to keep out of the sun may be the single most Lotus thing I've ever heard.
That is one hell of a colour though on a very cool car. I think you'll have a lot of fun with that, and amazing of your friend to allow you to look after it for them.

Will the PPF preserve the brightness of the paint? Surely the film has UV protection
I think you are correct there. I have one car that lives outside. It has a strip of PPF across the front of the bonnet. It looked like the ppf had discoloured after 9 years, but when we removed it we found that in fact the PFF had not discoloured, but that the unprotected paint had faded, whilst that under the PPF had retained its colour.

I painted my mk2 XR2 this colour back in the late 80's ,it literarily glowed at dusk 😁😁😁
From what i can see here on my TV, or what your camera can pick up, this color pretty much is the same as German Ambulance Cars.
Extremely bright and radiant. -- The Elise has always been one of my favorite cars. Small, nimble, agile, a true Drivers Car.
And not to expensive too

reminds me of only fools and horses when they paint the takeaway liminous yellow!
and you can tell how bright it is at the end as it washes out the orange of the GT8 when its in the same frame, what a crazy but awesome colour choice!
Lotus Elise looked so cool to me when I was younger and I always had one in my garage on all the different video games 😉🤙
The PPF will definitely help prevent the paint from fading. Top that with a ceramic coating and you’ll be good to go. That color is incredible

The Indy cars were painted that color because of their sponsor STP, not Lotus. Other cars from this sponsor had this color on them including Richard Petty's blue Plymouth NASCARs. The big oval STP logo was well known in the day, not so much today.

I love the color orange on a car. My favorite would be a bright orange candy metallic with a yellow undertone. Would look fantastic with a tan interior.
A travel bag, blue sky weather and the North coast 500 and some driving friends - perfection 👍 I can see that going up the cattle pass to Applecross and then following the coast road after lunch, that to me is a perfect Car for the highlands. Always been a great fan of the Elise, just a sad time in history that they decided to end production… The color is just to far out there, always thought a burgundy one would be perfect, but it’s the “final” statement I guess….
sales were slowing alot, customers wanted something new, so lotus have forfulled that.

7:10 It's not the lens that struggles, it's the data format of the saved image color data.
Edit: you can maybe see the camera auto adjusting the exposure and darkening the entire frame to cope with the brightness of the car. (It could be the weather, but I don't think it is.)
I guess that kinda makes sense, since camera's can process so many colors. It does seem logical that the auto adjusting is the issue here.

Finally you are driving a car with the same engine as my car! That is the 1.8 Toyota engine named 2ZZ-GE that is on the Celica and the Corolla T- Sport but with an added supercharger! :)
This is the later 2ZR engine, quite different from the higher reviving 2ZZ. I’ve got a 2 liter 2ZZ turbo Elise ;)

I saw an Elise earlier today and it was in a nice bright yellow but I bet this paint code is a million times brighter. Some bright colors on cars I can think of that might rival this would be electric beam yellow for the electric sls amg and the lark livery orange that is basically the same brightness as the sun. Great paint on the Elise.

I remember the guy who made Gran Turismo when that came out on the original Playstation, once said that his favourite car was the Lotus Elise due to its power to weight ratio and amazing handling.
