  • Glen Henry is a father changing the world. With prior success in music, he left the industry because he realized the biggest “stage” he’d ever perform on would be in his living room and his biggest fans would be his family. In 2015, he started his fast-growing CZcams channel called Beleaf In Fatherhood by welcoming us into his home to show the fun and real misadventures of parenting. I was a stay at home dad going to college, with my wife the bread winner, the entire first year of my son's life. I woke up everyday exhausted with my son crying me awake after 2 or 3 hours of sleep. Ever since I graduated and started my career, I thank God every day for giving me an entire year of my son knowing that daddy's got him!

I am a stay at home dad for the past 5 years with my 3 kids. No one understands, many belittle me, I move past all of it and continue the lonely striving. The loneliness and extreme levels of required self motivation is what I never saw coming. At the end of the day I am so grateful for the time with my kids. It means more to me than words I have.

Cheers to you men. I too am stay at home Dad for me and my fiances 4 children, from her previous marriage. I have had several debilitating injuries that had already mostly taken me out of my career, lumberjack. I left my job to stay at home, allowing her to finally give up the night shift and work regular hours. And it gave us great flexibility during covid, she had options and wasn't forced into doing something to her body that she didn't want to do. I take pride in it, being a great stay at home Dad, maintaining the property both inside and out, giving all of myself to the most important people in my world. There are tough times, always are. There are people within the family that have insulted me, laughed at me, and I truly feel sorry for anyone that can't see the value in what I do, man or woman, it's truly an honorable duty

He said it can't be that hard to clean the house and have dinner done, call agencies, fill out applications and make followup calls. He comes in and asks why I look tired. We have an almost 90lbs dog and she and my son will destroy the house. My only time to myself is IF he takes a nap. Then I still have the dog, she might take a nap when he does. Either that or she finds her loudest toy and goes ham!!!! I'm tired just thinking about it!

Am totally not judging you at all but...if you can get even a minimal job...even a small job...you might be surprised how that would help you and your family. I came from a family where my father stayed at home and my mum worked...but I just wanted my dad to work. Even if he was a janitor, or a cleaner or a carpenter...I would be so proud...so so proud. I don't know your situation but I would advice you for this.(my dad has a history of depression and alcoholism. I don't want to have children because I don't want to continue his lifeline. I think it should end with me.)

    • @kharlie22
      @kharlie22 Před 3 lety +6

@@augustinembae8266 Sounds more like you need to see a therapist. I really think it could help you. That resentment should not be what guides how you live your life. Also sounds like he was depressed before and he needed to speak to someone too. I'm thinking partly because he's a man and his wife is the one working. That's a major blow to most men. No matter the situation. He could have had all his appendages blown off and be in a wheel chair. Some men are only taught to financially support, or you're worthless. They skip or ignore the part where there supposed be supportive in general. Even though he might have loved you guys, that's sounding more like residual resentment. Like he was feeling hurt and bothered. And that's something that could be felt by others in your circle negatively. When a lot of people drink to escape, their feelings almost always come out.
      Life update:
The reason I wasn't working was because the company I worked for lost a major contract and laid a few of us off. I got another job shortly after, then had our second baby. My husband will take random vacation days and he'll stay with the kids. He struggles and things don't get done around the house same as with me. He not the type of person to admit he is struggling, but will show signs passively. He will call me about 6x a day to ask how to make a bottle or where this or that is. It's hilarious. We actually like our kids and enjoy spending time with them thought. And the 4yo can/will do most things on his own. Determined to be independent. He's still a handful though. More in the way of questions authority, most likely gonna be a lawyer or a contractor/architect that knows his way around the law. Tries to be sneaky, but he's too loud. If the baby is sleeping and he's not, he'll try to wake him up. The toddler is a tornado, and he will fight and then have a tantrum or run off with his hands in the air looking for somewhere to fall out with the drama when he's told he can't knock his brother upside the head with a toy.🤦🏾‍♀️ He's the one we had to baby proof EVERYTHING for. At this rate, I'm guessing he'll either go MMA or WWE.🤷🏾‍♀️ Our poor dog just runs into her crate sometimes when she sees him coming.🤣🤣🤣 I am currently at home but for the same reason as most people. I took longer though because I've had medical issues in the past and didn't want to chance anything. Plan to go back sometime next month. In the meantime, I make jewelry and I'm actually working on a custom order for some centerpieces.
      God bless!💙

@@augustinembae8266 I'm also speaking from experience. The way your upbringing sounds reminds me of someone else and their siblings I know closely. They love their dad and their mom was the breadwinner. Looking back at the past you can see he was showing signs of depression. And his kids felt the same way as you sound like you did. They resented him. Looking back as adults they understand more of why his dad was the way he was. The sister sees a therapist and it's helped her tremendously. The younger brother seems okay, but his personality is very nonchalant so it's hard to tell. The older brother is almost 10 years older was there for the father's behavioral changes so it effected him a lot more. He definitely should see one. He's a mess.

As a stay at home dad, you have get used to...
Not getting invited to the "mums" meet ups.
    Getting looks from old folks.
Mum's moving away in toddler groups, even when crowded, there'll be a 2 foot space round you.
Getting patronising talk from mums when they learn what you do.
Getting a wtf look from other dads who work.
Getting a 'stay away from my wife look' from husbands when they find out their wife has hung out with me at the park.
The comments of 'there's a stay at home dad over there for you to talk to!' from mums and grandmothers.
When toddler group organisers need helpers, they ask mums but not dads.
This is how it is mums. At least how ive seen it. And not in one area, but over three. Plus all other dads have backed this up.
It's tough being a parent. But that's what we are, mums and dads.... PARENTS!!!
If you see a parent that looks a bit lost at a toddler group, go over and say hi. It will make their day.

I absolutely looovvveeedddd this. LOVED👏IT👏!!! I'm a stay at home wife and mom of two and I have been following your channel for awhile now. I can identify with you on so many levels with the kiddos. When you announced that you were going to do TEDx Talks I was so happy for you and now that I have seen this video I am so proud of you. Proud of that fact that there is another voice promoting, appreciating, and presently living in the stay at home world. Thank you so much for sharing and may God continue to bless you and your beautiful family

I am self employed and a stay at home parent with five teenagers, two are mine, (I have been a lone parent since 2014,) and have a two year old with my current partner.
Was a chef before and if anyone says being a stay at home father/parent/mother/guardian or whatever your pronoun as a parent is, it is hard work trying to get everything done: cooking, cleaning, laundry, housework, garden, looking after the toddler and keeping them entertained... Believe it or not it's the teenagers who are more work than the toddler

Henry is a beautiful example of what it means to redefine and resist traditional views of masculinity. Men can be sensitive and nurturing. Men can meet the needs of children just as well as a woman. Fathers can and should be encouraged to be stay at home parents just as much as mothers. As Henry spoke about clearing the path for future generations (“When you start to take steps, it feels like baby steps, wobbling. But then they turn into stomps. And you start making footprints for the next generation to walk in. See, we’re walking on a certain path as parents. We’re all in this together. No one can deny that family is one of the biggest foundations in anyone’s life. We’re all walking on this path and we’re pulling these thickets out of the way, and these thorns, making it easier for the ones coming after us.”) I was struck by the ways that he and other men like Henry are paving the way for a future of men who redefine what it means to be masculine.

He is a new found role model for me. I am a stay at home Dad currently. I have so much more compassion and empathy to what it is to be a stay at home wife/person. It also takes a lot of trust in the working partner, because you completely rely on them.

This was good! I want to send this to every father that give their wife a hard time! Lol I salute every mother and father who stay at home to take care of their child. As a woman, I'm not sure if I would be able to do this and not sure if I want my husband to do it either if I'm totally honest. At any rate, to each it's own. I do however think there should be a father stay at home week(not day)! They need to know how challenging it is to raise a child from the mother perspective and appreciate their wives more. Thanks for sharing. Btw, Your music is pretty dope!

Thank you so much for this amazing, truthful, accurate, and much needed talk. I've had just about every job under the sun. I'm now a stay at home dad, and I can say without a doubt that It's the most physically, mentally, and emotionally draining job I've ever had. Loneliness, lack of energy, severe levels of stress, and the feeling that you're never doing a good enough job are what makes being a stay at home parent so difficult. People will never understand, until they do it themselves. Again, thank you.
