- In this video, I will be going through my clothing and kit list for the Hunter Gatherer Challenge run by Joe O'Leary at Wilderness Survival Skills. There is a strict, very limited list of kit to take on this challenge to encourage you to think about finding and making what you need in order to survive for an extended period of time in the wild. This includes shelter making, making a bed, making fire, finding and purifying water, gathering food and making a primitive hunting weapon. My personal choices were based on previous experience and preferences built up over a long period of time and they worked well for me.
The Hunter Gatherer challenge is a four day, four night primitive wilderness survival challenge set amongst a vast woodland area in Wiltshire, South West England. It is tough trial, designed to test your existing knowledge and skills, as well as your mental and physical endurance.
I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!

Thank you , Simon .

I forgot about the making of wool blanket clothing on this channel. Love it
Great insight, thanks for sharing. Your emergency bag was especially interesting.
I learned to knap obsidian back in college-- no flint here. The only time I ever use it, amazingly, is in the UK-- airline fascists always take my little scissors and pen-knife. Eventually when out and about outside of London I'll find some flint and make a few little blades. Can be really helpful when trying to get into some unobliging food packaging.
Each one becomes a fun little souvenir.
Cheers,
It's possible to spend a small fortune on 'bug-out' kit trying to cover every eventuality and I'd probably expire from exhaustion carrying the weight of it all! Effectively, Simon says "The more you know the less you need". Thanks for the lesson.
Couldn't agree more Dave. BTW,is that Jack Hargreaves' pic you're using? He was my hero when i was a kid in the seventies.👍
I've been envious of those trousers for some time - now I know what they are! On order - getting the boots too.. 😁
Mad respect to you Sir.
Spending that much time in the woods with that little kit is just awesome, well done.
I really enjoyed watching your skills.
Nice kit load out mate. I was really impressed by the use of the mesh bag for making the fruit leather!
I am so glad you gave a list if equipment.
Precise and to the point Simon. Good stuff, thanks
This is an awesome kit. Thank you for sharing!
Very well thought out kit list, a good head start for me. Thank you Simon. 👍
Thanks for your load out list, says a lot about your skill set that you accomplish so much with so little. Cheers
Thanks for showing these. The cable on the billy is a great idea.
Yeah very much enjoyed this video Simon, another good insight into quality kit. I especially like the Bison Jumper and the water proof 👍 thanks mate, Ant.
Interesting selection of gear. Enjoyed watching it in use on the course.
Great video again Simon, thanks for sharing it, look forward to your next one keep up the good work 👍
Thanks for taking the time to record your whole adventure Simon. it can't have been easy but it was just great and I've really really enjoyed it. Cheers! Steve
Thanks for another very well made video. Watching these is like spending time with an old friend! Alot of nice gear.
Great loadout kit, Simon. Sometimes you have to utilize what you can afford when you are self- supportive. Thanks for sharing, I am sure most folks found this very useful, as I did. ATB Von
Excellent video
Thanks Simon, informative as usual.
Great load-out and breakdown of your gear brother. Awesome choice of kits. Good stuff. Cheers bud!
Thanks for walking us through the thought behind why you took what with you to the challenge. It looked like fun.
In the end that's all that matters... What you "feel" comfortable using, and what works for you. Good video Simon, and thanks for your dispersion of knowledge.
Simon, your videos never disappoint!!!!!appreciate the great info and tips
Excellent Simon. Simple sturdy kit, well presented
Al
Great vid and thanks for sharing, Simon!!! I already knew what gloves you had, lol
Handy knowledge thanks Simon.
Thank you for the tips. Marmot gloves and Ventile fabric (rain coat).
Enjoyed your vid..Love the gear. That's some kit!!!! :D Thumbs up!!! Thank you for a detailed video on that, very thorough!! :D
Every piece of your kit 'worked overtime' for you on the challenge. It helped that you added in personal skills to make such an effective bow and arrow system, winning supplementary food items. You organized so much using that Zebra billy: boiling, baking, pounding acorns and the like. I might not have got my head around when to use the billy to boil water, when to use it to forage or even to realize that there was something out there that I could bake in it.
excellent video, love those choices of gear
Great video, well explained choices. Thank you Sir.
Superb video. Thank you. Bang on!!!!
Thanks for the list. Shows you don't need much kit to survive.
Excellent choices Simon. All the best to you.
Great video Simon on your kit enjoyed the video nice one take care Simon
Great video, very useful!
Nice video Simon, and very useful :) Thanks
Fantastic Simon, simply fantastic. I just caught up with your last video, and now this one. I was telling my hunting buddy about your channel, and your four day challenge. I believe you picked up another subscriber there. The bow was a work of art. Great job. Be safe. Roger.
Thanks Roger! 👍
Those were some great videos, i would love to go on an expierence like that
Great follow up to your adventure! It seems like a lot of STUFF, but in reality it was bare minimum. One shouldn't go out into the wilderness (deliberately) with much less if they can help it! Thanks for sharing!
Cheers Simon, that's the true meaning of the phrase "less is more". And that really is a brute of a knife, you could remove a car roof with that!
Thanks buddy
Awesome as always
Thank you for the tips and tricks Simon. I agree, Buff make some really comfy beanies. Stay safe. Cheers from Denmark :)
Thanks Martin. The beanie is a Buffy hat (not Buff) knitted in small batches down in the West Country. 👍😁
I think everyone likes a load-out video. Thanks.
Nice video Simon 👍. Great review on what you took , on the four days servile .
I want to comment on that bow. It was awesome! If I would have your skills I wouldn't have wasted money buying a bow. Thank you Simon for sharing. And by the way I love that knife you told us about and now have one and would recommend it to everyone.
Thanks, Simon. 🙂👍
Thanks for this video
Brilliant!
Great video! I just happen to be wearing my Vidda Pros today since it snowed, is windy and going down to -13C tonight in northern Illinois. The vidda pros have more than enough room for a heavyweight base layer and still allow movement for shoveling and walking my Pyrenean Mountain dog (who loves the winter and outdoors as much as I do.). Looking forward to more great content from your channel this winter.
Great info. Thanks for sharing
Thanks Simon.
great video simon thanks for sharing cheers
Nice place, and an amazing kit.
thanks mate
love from aus

Just stumbled across your show and enjoying it. Not being negative but in a really life emergency you’ll just have the shirt on your back - good video thou 👍
Thanks for sharing. 👍
Very interesting set up pal,,,, great to see some of the choices you made,,atb pal Mike
Interesting and informative!
A very informative video, nice one 👍👍🔥🔥
Thanks Simon :)
Nice one simon cracking rundown of ya kit mate atvb Jimmy 😎😎
Nice sharing... thanks
I found this video to be very helpful. Kenny
Thanks for putting the video together..I wish i could wear wool as it looks lovely and rustic. Just starting my bush craft journey so good to see the pro's at work.
Wool is a great material for outdoor clothing - durable, warm (even if wet) resistant to sparks from the fire. 👍👍👍
Good video and good kit choices thanks for sharing ATB
Watched both parts and happy to see that you survived. Was good to see the wool shirt, I remember watching you make it as well as many other things. In conclusion, rather you than me. Take care buddy :)
Your friend Rach
Thnx for Upload!
cool , i like the homemade wool hoodie type top , atb
Mais um vídeo fantástico parabéns!

I buy teeny weeny little Vaseline containers (and I mean teeny-weeny!). I decant the contents into my main Vaseline container, wash them out and put meds in them. One I leave with Vaseline in it. The other contains Mylocort which is a cortisone bite and itch cream. The third contains wound sterilization cream. They are TINY - novelties, really. My four Buscopan tablets I sealed into a tiny bit of drinking straw. My paracetamol and Voltaren tablets go into a VERY small pill container. Its not weight I object to - its unneccesary VOLUME.
Nice run down and good choices matey. ive got a buffy on my birthday list ;) haha
Good choice matey! 😁
Nice one Simon. Currently watching this on my tv and I must say.... the parachord separation idea 💡 what brilliance 👌 I did not know that 😅 mind you, that’s probably why I follow you. I hope my videos inspire people too 👍
Simon, thanks for sharing, great choices , give Maggie a scratching and a pat for me . God bless !
Done - Maggie says woof! 😁
Got the same boots mate yes they are good boots 👍
Hi Simon, it maybe worth checking out Hilltrek waterproof jackets if you like Paramo and Ventile stuff .
Great video. On my list of challenges to come on my channel. Thanks! Canadian Fan and Subbed!
Good video
Those Alpkit merino wool tops are great. I took the half-zipped collared version with me on a 3 week motorcycle jaunt around Europe recently and it was just so warm. Dried very quickly. Even hanging up overnight in the tent was enough to dry off the worst and fully dried after I put it on in the morning. I would say it rivaled my synthetic top for drying but it never picked up any smells, unlike the synthetic one !
Can't believe we've got the same first aid bag and almost the same contents !!! Must be a bushcraft thang.....
Haha - great minds!! Yes, alpkit know what they’re doing - I’ve had other, more expensive merino tops that weren’t half as good! 👍
I recently purchased the Olight H1R headlamp, didn't get to really try it out yet, but thanks to you I now know that it's a great investment, thanks 🤙
It’s a very good head torch! 👍
Great that you used the alternative cord 👍 I also need to repair a hole in a Paramo and I’m intending to use a product I picked up at the Bushcraft Show called (I think) Seamsure....the demo I saw enables it to be used in the manner of a flexible plaster. I’ll let you know how I get on...
Cheers Stu - I’d be very interested in how it turns out, I’ve got some of the McNett tenacious tape - but I always worry it’ll peel off.
Nice video..
Cheers Simon , liked the wool blanket hoody . Going to look that video up , I got some U.S. army wool blankets , maybe I can get my mother- n- law to make me one . Like the video and the Intro and the music you always pick.
Have a good day!
Cheers Johnny. 👍
Yep I wear those boots. eBay 30 quid bloody brilliant! Army surplus ..... 120 new!
Beer!!!!!Hot chocolate!!!!! We are talking survival here. Great video.
😂👍
The boots, I hope I can find a women's version. By the way, love the music in this video. It's so relaxing to replay your videos while I do house chores or have my morning coffee. Thanks, Simon and keep the quality videos coming :)
Thanks Shauna! I’m pretty sure they do them in women’s sizes. 👍
Liked your 'kit' video, especially the Vida Pro trousers, I recently bought the Fjallraven Granit shirt, a wool/polyester mix with G100 sections, wanted the Pro trousers as well for a four day trip camping up in Glencoe, Scotland, but as a pensioner couldn't really justify another 120 quid ! Hopefully get them another time. Cheers !
Yes, they are pricey! But worth it in my mind as they last so well. 👍
Darn it!
Loved the videos of the challenge you did and this one just sweetens the pot:)
And as a bonus, I was wondering about your sweatshirt only to find you had a video of making that also. So I watched that one tonight as well.
Now I have a project for this winter:)
Happy sewing! 😁👍
I cut it out :)
Sewing machine is down
I'll let you know how it turns out when I get back up and running
Patch those knees and the trousers are good for a decade. Leather scraps sewn on.
Simon, Excellent video. May I suggest you do remove the wrapper from your cat tourniquet? It has a very sturdy plastic, nothing I would want to mess with when I am bleeding badly. Cheers
Good advice! 👍
Good kit for the challenge. The only "ding" that would attract attention to me is the Victorinox Swisscard; I would've taken the one with the scissors in it instead of the "Quatro" with the screwdrivers. Tool Logic makes a nice card with something similar that may be, to me, better. All the other items are cool. Taking the battery bank is never a bad move, but there's a bank that also has a great light on it. I believe it's Tommley. Good system. It solar charges as well.
Crack on, good sir.
Thank you! My power bank also has a light and solar charger - might be the same one (although mine is branded differently) I have one of the scissor SwissCards in my main FAK - to be honest, I forgot to swap them over before the challenge!! 🙄👍
oh this is educational
Great choices, the problem I have with wool is I am violently allergic to the Lanolin Oil in it (I even have to watch which bandages I use as they have Lanolin in the adhesives) which means if I super wash to take the lanolin out it no longer stays worm or water repellent. I am trying to find stuff made from Alpaca wool as it doesn't have lanolin.
That is a quandary! There must be manufacturers out there addressing this issue - hope you find something!
Cool kit, man. You gotta warn somebody lol, I was "WTF IS THAT?! at 16:06.
Hahaha - it’s like one of those novelty stress balls, only edible! 😂👍
Olights are hard to beat their low settings last forever it seems. 👍👍👍👍👍
Great choice of gears you took but next time take an extra pair of woollen warm gloves just to wear when you are sleeping outdoors 👍👍👍
I have taken an extra pair of wool socks and ended up using them for mitts when sleeping....
Good tip - I suffer from cold hands! 👍
