We continue to look at the International Court of Justice's interim ruling in South Africa v. Israel with Stockton University professor Raz Segal and human rights lawyer Diana Buttu. We discuss Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's response to the ruling, the role of the United States in stymying international action and more. We also hear more from ICJ president Joan Donoghue's delivery of the ruling, including the court's acknowledgement of the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

@@tomthecasual5337 But the ICJ rulings are enforced by the UN Security Council, and any of the 5 permanent members can veto enforcement.
So, the same international community that failed for more than 100 days is the same international community that can block enforcement of law.

Untrue, but I understand why this could be an opinion.
ALL countries belonging to the UN can pressure Israel to abide by the Genocide Convention.
These Nations could, in fact, bring their own evidence to South Africa and this to the ICJ.
Case in point: Russia ignored much the same type of order from the ICJ so sanctions CAN be applied to Israel as Russia found out.
Military weapons can be blocked from Israel, money also.
International pressure is entirely possible, in fact very likely on the USA, UK, European countries and Canada.

On May 14, 1948, Israeli commandos, armed by British, held positions along roads leading from Jerusalem to the sea. they awaited orders,...when Ben Gurion announced that the British mandate was over and the UN voted to accept the state of Israel., they climbed assigned trucks and the killing of Palestinian people living in coastal fishing towns began. They called it "war of independence". Bulldozers were used to bury and mask the graves in orchards, fields and streets of what would become Beach resorts.
The bones of those Palestinians are still found by workers repairing or expanding parking lots or gardens on what used to be fishing towns.
Golda Meir wrote: "“It was not as if there was a Palestinian people in Palestine and we came and threw them out and took their country away from them. They did not exist.”" in an attempt to erase history while unmasking herself because if there were not Palestinian people...what was the independence war about?

It is such a sad life for young children to see horrific senes of that magnitude and not be affected. And this is what we are doing as adults with such bitterness and hatred.
"Surely there is a future and your hope will not be cut short." I feel this ruling is significant and the number of votes in favor of this ruling significant as well. As are all the other cases involved, checking the American governments complicity in the situation. There is hope and hopefully this is a light shining through the darkest times I've seen in my days. May God be with all who stood for a people who are barely able to stand for themselves under the horror they have found themselves enduring after years of oppression and sorrows. May God be with them. I ask this in Jesus name, Amen.
Agree. The Court's ruling is historic. South Africa's case and presentation were stunning. I never ever thought I would see such a ruling on Israel in my long lifetime.
I remember writing - some 20 years ago - that Israel was destroying itself with its vicious apartheid policies and its alliance with U.S. warmongers. Too bad they couldn't think of a more creative, peaceful way to live. I currently feel despair for both Israel and for my own country, the USA. I see no path to reform and nothing but more trouble ahead. My only hope now is that China, Russia and the Global South will be able to prevent WW III, without too much more suffering to ordinary people in all of our countries.
Thanks for this and the information about the Oakland, CA, court case happening today.
Come to Oakland!
Don't leave ANYTHING in your parked car, tho, and be aware of your surroundings when exiting or entering your vehicle. We have carjackings every day, and close to zero law enforcement.
But, don't let that stop you from enjoying the show trial 😊
It will not change anything. They own the U.S. gov.

How can Israel claim to respect international law? Israel had already cumulatively violated 28 legally binding resolutions of the UN Security Council.

As queen Amidala of the Nabu have stated people are dying. We cannot sit back and watch politicians and whistle debate the death of people in session.
Stop the wars
What authority does this court have over any nation? None.
Just imagine the reparations that will have to be paid.
How sad that power and money can demolish humanity. South Africa suffered and struggled for years under colonialism but they did rise. Let’s hope the same for the Palestinian people.

South Africa 🌍 is now in ruins. Nice freedom yea. 🎉
How do all the measures of restraint outlined by the judge not add up to a CEASEFIRE?
What is the ICJ supposed to do?
I whole heartedly welcome the courts rulings. Now, does anyone know what metrics will be used to adjudicate on compliance to the rulings? For instance what would we expect to find in Israel's first report to the court, due in 30 days?
This is a preliminary hearing ,no court proceedings have been carried out yet

It will also be interesting who has access to or benefits from the new gas fields off the coast of Gaza and who the contracts go to for rebuilding Gaza

The ICJ ordered Hamas to unconditionally release the hostages. Does anyone think that Hamas or any Palestinians will comply?
The ICJ did not "order Hamas to unconditionally release the hostages." They have no jurisdiction over Hamas (which may be the reason - or one of the reasons - they didn't directly order an Israeli ceasefire). They merely recommended that Hamas hostages be unconditionally released.
@@maryhuckaby2239 As you say, this is the closest thing they can do to an order.
Would you agree that Hamas is the Defacto or perhaps the actual government of the Gaza Strip?
If Israel doesn't abide by the provisions, ICJ can make an application to a higher UN authority to block US veto so the provisions are met by Israel. It is a binding agreement that Israel has committed to follow as it is a member of the ICJ organisation.
"...a higher UN authority to block US veto...". Do you mean the General Assembly? This is the first I've heard of a means to block as U.S. veto. Please explain more.
They want to give Netanyahu the Nobel Peace prize.
There's a special prize waiting for Bibi in hell.

Did you mean Nobel Genocide Price!!!!!
Probably a bunch of Left-wing Christian groups. Believe me as a person in Christian circles - I hate how our Left-wing Christians gush over virtue signaling. I don't think Netanyahu needs a medal, even though i approve of his work.
The Left-wing vs Right-wing dynamic in the Churches.
I have great respect for South Africa and the independent media. Their tireless efforts have yielded success, in my opinion, as a member of the global community who values liberty and justice for all. Their commitment to these values is truly commendable.

That’s hilarious. You should check out their policies on the LGBTQ community. Also how they treat white farmers.
@@RedWing88 we are talking about genocide of innocent civilians. Have some compassion!
I would like to remind everyone that while tRUmP is wrong about Palestinians celebrating 9/11 in New Jersey; they were on the streets in Gaza and the West Bank. Iranians went on the street sympathizing with America.
Why wouldn't they celebrate? The US has been funding and arming their oppressors for 80 years.
As the first guest said, if Israel does not respect the decision of the International Court of Justice, the next step will be sanctions. This time, Israel finds itself in a dire situation. Now our voices can bring real change.
The US will veto sanctions but it is still important to try
The ruling of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) is effectively calling for a ceasefire because it mandates actions that inherently require a cessation of hostilities and aggressive actions. The key elements of the ruling include:
1. Prevention of Genocide Acts: The ICJ orders Israel to prevent acts that could be considered as genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. This includes stopping killings, serious bodily or mental harm, and other acts that could lead to the destruction of Palestinians.
This direction fundamentally requires an end to violent actions, which is a core aspect of a ceasefire.
2. Immediate Cessation of Specified Military Acts: The order for the Israeli military to not commit any acts described in the first point (such as killing or causing harm to members of the Palestinian group) is directly aligned with the principles of a ceasefire.
It requires stopping aggressive military operations.
3. Prevention and Punishment of Incitement to Genocide: By mandating Israel to prevent public incitement to commit genocide, the ruling aims to reduce tensions and hostilities, which is consistent with the objectives of a ceasefire.
4. Provision of Humanitarian Assistance: The directive to facilitate the provision of basic services and humanitarian assistance implies creating a peaceful and secure environment for these activities. In conflict zones, such humanitarian efforts are often facilitated by ceasefires.
5. Preservation of Evidence: The requirement to preserve evidence related to allegations of genocide acts suggests a halt in actions that could lead to the destruction of such evidence, implying a reduction in conflict-related activities.
6. Reporting on Measures Taken: The demand for Israel to report on measures taken to implement the order adds a layer of accountability and monitoring, which often accompanies ceasefire agreements.
Overall, while the ruling does not explicitly use the term "ceasefire," the measures it prescribes are aimed at reducing violence, ensuring safety, and facilitating humanitarian efforts, all of which are in line with the objectives of a ceasefire.
Both parties must agree and adhere to a ceasefire before it can be successful. Hamas has never adhered to a ceasefire. They use it to their advantage.
Even if the ICJ straightforwardly said ceasefire which is wouldn’t because they are suppling this genocide; israhell will continue to ignore it and flip the script.
@@LunaLapin-ho5tk Unlike Isrl, Hmas is NOT a state party, nor a member of the UN therefore not bound by or eligible as a defendant in the ICJ.
They have never the less claimed that they would abide by the ruling if Isrl does, wether or not this means anything or holds any water - is up for debate.
But the fact does remain, that Isrl as the only self-proclaimed democracy in the region and UN member state is bound by this ruling.

Who blatantly disregards such an order? People who are so guilty that they can have nothing but disdain for the law.
The ICJ ruling very disappointing ; it could have done more to protect the people of Gaza. It should have ordered an immediate cessation of the war
Only the Gazans themselves can protect themselves. Firstly, they get their Regime to surrender unconditionally. Then they must release the Israeli hostages.
Finally, they must compensation to the Israelis for all their suffering.

This ruling is essentially repeating what the Biden administration has already stated: Israel must comply with the international law and let humanitarian help into Gaza. The ruling highlights the risk of genocide but apparently for the court there was not enough evidence yet to rule on that, instead the ruling on genocide will take years. In the meantime Israel must provide monthly reports on its war activities. The ruling sounds very lenient and trustworthy of Israel, giving it plenty of time to change the genocide narrative and asking Israel, the potential genocide perpetrator, to provide evidence of its own potential acts of genocide. Despite the ruling, this court case is historical and helps drawing support to Palestine from the global public, which will be eventually the true judge of what is happening in Gaza. Thank you South Africa for such an incredible fight for justice.
It is revealing that of the two that opposed this dreadful accusation, Uganda was the only Justice to see through the dreadful State of South Africa's case. A Government and Country that is in dreadful trouble and corruption. Democracy Now means kick out the case!
