I guarantee you they're absolutely back to being on the streets. There can be a lot of things making it hard to get out of poverty, but any man (and the vast majority of homeless are men) with two hands and two feet can find a job. Those that don't can absolutely find the help they need through charities, churches, jobs they *can* do, disability, etc. The reason most of these people are homeless are because of mental illness or disability that keeps them from interacting with the rest of the world like most of us.

I guarantee they're watched/monitored to make sure they stick to the script and not do any common sense thinking for themselves. The higher ups assume people won't ask about grace periods etc.
Same as when you phone to cancel appointments and they say they'll have to charge you a massive cancellation fee (even if you've given 48 hours notice or whatever). Ask if it costs anything to reschedule - often it doesn't, so you can reschedule the appointment you want to cancel and then cancel it once it's on their books for 2 weeks' time or whatever. So frustrating.

Here’s my story! No malicious compliance, but still a food service story where you’re expected to do two things at once. So, I worked at a bakery and cafe. My manager was a sweetheart, but there were other folks who were tough cookies. There was one gal who worked on the food. She made the sandwiches and the salads etc. I was a cashier. I was expected to ring people up, and grab the baked goodies for people. If there was ever a busy day, and I needed to switch jobs (sometimes I had to put fresh bread into bags for people to buy) my manager and his assistant would always politely ask me to switch jobs. But the food gal was different. Whenever the line would get busy, I found myself yelling for someone to come and make food while tickets would be piling up. I later learned food gal would go off and clean something. When she was in super cleaning mode, nothing would stop her. She was the type of gal who could do two things at once. She later would pull me to the side and started teaching me how to make sandwiches and salads. But then people would come up to the register. I liked and respected food gal, but I realized she was expecting ME to do two things at once. This made my anxiety worse than it already is, and I started to become frustrated. It felt like she just wanted me to be a cashier and a cook at the same time so she could go off and clean something... it wasn’t what I signed up for at all and I found myself feeling frustrated and overwhelmed. Part of me feels bad for not wanting to do the food work, but another part of me knows I already had other stuff I needed to do. Be a cashier, but fresh bread and other goodies away, put stickers on boxes, clean tables, restock products, etc. Why would I want to do someone else’s job when I have a mile-long list of my own?

Corporate is the worst thing on the planet, becausemajority of them never worked in the position they make the rules for. I worked for a place where we had someone from corporate come to our store to evaluate us. Dude is relatively friendly with everyone, a very likable person. He gets to evaluating me, he watches me work for awhile and we are conversing with one another, then a little later he says, well you're supposed to do it like this, this, and this. So I said, was my product not good in those areas? He said "they were, but that's not how the book says to do it." So, I extended my tools out to him and said, "here show me how to do it, so I can learn from you." 8:55 This reminds me of the joke that we used to say at FMFI UK about how a mathematician and a physician cooked an instant soup (the one that comes as a powder in a satchel).
Case 1: Everything is stowed at its place. Both take the pot out, put the water in it, put it on the stove, wait for the water to boil, then add the soup.
Case 2: The water is already in the pot and boiling. The physician adds the soup. The mathematician quenches the fire, pours the boiling water down the drain and stows the pot away. This way he reduced the problem to case 1 which he already knows how to solve. :D
In this AT&T case the customer reduced the problem of him having a fresh account without the perk into a case where he was not a customer so the AT&T clerks knew how to solve his problem :D
Regarding the "boxes" this might be necessary as the "new" box had the access codes for the HBO and stuff while the "old" didn't. And being AT&T means they were "hundred years behind the monkeys" so they didn't know how to update a box remotely to match what the customer is supposed to receive.

Oh man I get that retail thing so much. I used to work at McDonalds on the drive thru order window. The number one thing I was told on day one of the job was if I had someone in front of me at the payment window, all of my attention had to be on them so I couldn't take orders or do anything else in that time. If things got busy, I was to press this bell on the wall and someone would come in and either take over the payment window or start taking orders.
Nobody ever came when I pressed the bell. They were either too busy because it's rush hour or just didn't fucking care. The managers NEVER helped pick up the slack, which was supposed to be one of the things they were meant to do, instead they'd just hide in the office all day on the computer. So I'd have to take an order, tell the next car to wait a moment, take money and give change, next order, next car to wait, take money etc.
I'd have cars going around the block on rush times and the manager would have the audacity to come in and either tell me to go faster (most of the time I couldn't because the queue couldn't move due to the delivery window being slow as fuck), or he'd berate me for not doing another job, like mop the floors, doing dive (basically washing a load of shit up because yeah that's Window Ones job as well) or putting the cleaning lobby workers' cloths into the washing machine.
Yet if I left the window, he'd tell me off for leaving the window when there's cars. So I'd go back to the window, 5 minutes later he comes in to shout at me for not doing another job. He'd tell me to get some help in, I'd press the bell, no help would come. Then he'd come and have another go at me for not getting any help in.
One day I was just done and told him before he could open his mouth if he wasn't coming to help me with the window then he should stay in his fucking office. He can see the cameras, he can SEE THE LINE OF CARS GOING AROUND THE BLOCK and thus knew exactly why I hadn't done XYZ job. I also started just leaning on the help bell as it would make a loud ringing noise which was the help signal. So I would lean on it until someone finally got fucked off enough to come and help.
He got pissy with me afterwards, but I wasn't fired for it because he knew I was in the right and he was in the wrong. If the jobs needed doing so direly then he could've done them or taken my headset and served customers whilst I did them.

I can relate to 10:55 so much.
I work as part of an overnight team cleaning the store whilst we juggle orders [24hr fast food].
Because of this it's expected that we keep order times low [sub a minute ideally] whilst getting the place clean for morning handoff.
It's a real kick in the balls when you work your ass off to get the entire place clean, whilst taking orders [friday/saturday night 3Am rushes can do one] to have the morning manager complain that you didn't do the extra little jobs you do on slow days out of consideration and convenience.
    For reference;
Overnight staff jobs consist of cleaning levels, floor, rotating stock, checking stock dates, recording waste from that day, handling orders/food production [one person making food, one on the grills/fry vats] and because of our already low staff this workflow is split amongst maybe three staff members on a good day so we have a few high quality staff carrying everything themselves.
Eventually after getting comfortable with how things work, picking up good habits from the best staff and trying to be comparable i got into a work flow and how to go about things.
I was working more efficiently and got ahead of the old work routine, especially with another staff member who is fantastic at his job, consistently so. Both of us were storming through our work and worked hard to get the place spick and span for the morning, even doing some morning jobs in advance to save them time and make life easier for the morning manager.
Absolutely no appreciation/recognition for the effort - not so much as a "thanks".
Worse still, it then became expected that I'd meet [even with staff that actively slack and are known to slack] that standard every night.
It's gone from a nicety on my behalf to an expectation on theirs and an unreasonable one at that - the night staff are expected to run the store with 5 staff on a good day, autonomously, to a highly clean standard, whilst relieving other people of their responsibilities and juggling orders as they come in and keeping the duration it takes to produce that food down.

My mom used to be a tram driver and wouldn't respect speed limits because the trams would speed up to quickly and you would very soon after have to hit the brakes which caused trams to overheat quickly and break. One day her company got a speeding ticket from the tram she was driving and her boss wasn't happy about it. He berated her about how she must respect the speed limitand how not respecting it was dangerous and expensive for the company because of the speeding tickets. She tries to explain to him that her respecting the speed limit would be more expensive for the company because of all the broken trams it would cause. Her boss didn't want to listen and said she would be fired if she didn't respect the speed limit. So she did. The boss gave up after the 5th broken tram.

For the AT&T story I totally understand - stupid corporate policy plus employees who just want to do their jobs and go home will lead to these kinds of situations quite often.

That first one seems really over-petty. From what I've seen, the 15 minute rounding is pretty normal at hourly positions, and while there is a potential for you to be off by 2.5 hours per week, the wide margins around timeblocks mean that will not happen unless you're actually late/early for every single clock in. If you are within a 15 minute window of the correct time, its marked correct. This almost always leads to employees accumulating extra hours on their time cards. OP also got rubbed the wrong way by being asked to clock out when leaving work to go home and let their kids in. Clocking out when leaving the site is standard procedure, and it's absolutely not abnormal for a manager to remind someone to do it, especially since OP has objectively demonstrated that they are the type of person to fudge clock in and clock out times for their own benefit.
Pretty sure this is just a spoiled salary worker that's salty they have to live with hourly procedures now.

So true! Every job I've had has the 15 minute rounding. It's the company's fault that he doesn't understand it? Plus what company let's their employees clock-in 7 minutes late or early? This is why managers are also on punch in and out because some people want to abuse the situation. Most places don't even allow early punch-ins before 5 minutes. And some places count you as late even if by 1 minute. Every job has different procedures and things you like and don''t like. A lot of places can't afford or have the man power to have an employee just leave during their shift. I think they were really understanding about his situation but of course it's the company that doesn't care cuz they aren't paying him. Ugh met so many guys like him in the food industry

@@ciarangale4738 scammed how? The guy, who works hourly, tallied up his time on his own and wanted to leave based on numbers that nobody else had.
"I'm going home early, I've done enough work this week. Says me."

In the matter of the "Stock up without leaving the counter", my simple response would be "Since you know how it's done, I need you to show me how I can stock up without leaving the counter or ask the kitchen for help."

I had a moment similar to that one where they were supposed to restock but not leave the counter except it was in a factory, I was a material handler and was told I couldn't use my storage area to store parts. I kept bringing them anyways. When the supervisor over that area started bitching at me I looked him square in the eye and said, "Well, why don't you just shit me a place to put all the incoming parts in then since you obviously think you have the power to make them magically have a place". He never bothered me about where I stored parts again. I think it must have been the first time someone had actually challenged one of his stupid commands and he simply had no answer for it.
