  • I hate resin 3D printing. Resin stinks, it's messy, and prints fail often. Can the hottest new resin printer change all that? In this video I take a look at the GK Two from Uniformation, providing a unique perspective on it as someone who runs a 3D printing service.

I have had the exact opposite experience with resin printing. I have had just the one anycubic photon mono 4k and it has lasted me about 2.5 years now, I always get WAY better print quality on resin prints compared to fdm. FDM is good for printing quickly and prototyping but resin makes the part 1000% better.

Your frustrations sound like my experience with my original Anycubic Photon. But when i switches to my Photon Mono SE, everything just *worked*. In about a year, I've had maybe a half dozen failed prints, and had to relevel my build plate maybe twice. I also use Elegoo ABS-like Fast Gray, which prints beautifully and is very resilient to impact when cured.

Internal filter circulation is more important than you think. A single pass through a carbon filter is simply not enough to remove a lot of VOCs. By re-circulating it you are keeping the VOCs in the printer and you can run the chamber fan post-print for a while to ensure most VOCs are filtered out of the air first. I don't plan on getting into resin yet, FDM is doing fine for my purposes, but for me to ever do so the printer is going to have to have an internally circulating carbon and hepa filter for me to trust it with my health, that stuff is nasty even when the smells are removed.

  • @billyd78
    @billyd78 Před 2 měsíci +1

I feel exactly like you do. I use my resin printer when I have a figurative gun to my head and no choice but to use it. The results are amazing but it's still not worth the hassle unless I can't print the part any other way. I don't own the gk2 but am tempted to upgrade to it. But I don't love that build plate much. If I got this I would remove the carbon filter and just cap that off, and use an exhaust system to outdoors and stay out of the room while printing. I wear a mask with 60926 filters when cleaning and curing, or when I have to be in the room with the printer. Resin printing is dangerous and has to be treated with respect, or you chance getting really bad news from your doctors some years down the road.

I placed a glass screen protector on my photon mono X and sealed it in place with kapton tape. I learned this from using a smaller photon first. I level before each print, clean the vat and spray it with ptfe. You have to be serious about the prints if your going this route.

im about to get an upgrade from Mars 4 Ultra, jeez... that was a pain in the backside, leveling was made so stressful as 1 side NEVER is leveled no matter how much you relevel it. temperature problems, as its always cold where i am. fep/acf problem which also brings from the levelling being a problem, the single wobbly Z bar it has.
When it worked it works but mars 4 ultra was the first printer i had, i learnt a lot from it though which is good but having the inconveniences it gave me... hoping the GKtwo can fix and tick those boxes for me 🙃

I have a resin printer and have found it very messy and wasteful to use the alcohol solution for cleaning the biggest drawback in my opinion as the alcohol vat gets dirty quite quickly and you have to set it aside for a long time for the plastic to cure in the alcohol before you can reuse the alcohol and dispose of the resin. My garage is now full of toxic chemicals and stinks whenever I print anything, all this to still have failed prints. You need to print an awful lot of stuff to make back the cost of buying the printer. Debugging can be difficult to as, after months of failed prints, I finally realized it always failed when the outdoor temperature dropped below 10'C in overnight prints and I had to buy a heater.

Carbon doesn't remove anything but the scent. Run it through as many times as you want. You're just making a localized collection of the chemicals in a cheap carbon brick. If you do "use" those, at least have it outside the workplace.

This is a great relatable video and I'm finding it at the perfect time. Recently upgraded my FDM machines to a couple Bambus and it's been such a game changer that I've been looking at my resin machines trying to figure out which one I should buy to feel like a comparable upgrade. Was considering the Sonic Mega 8k for this ability to do huge batches, but reliability and consistency is ultimately what matters most to me, so I can focus less of my time on maintenance, downtime, and failures. It's the perfect time because I also just had a Halot Mage's UV light die (flickering) I'm going to buy a couple of these bad boys with your ref link right now. Resin printing has its niche, for high dimensional accuracy and fine details in complex geometries that are inconvenient for FDM. It's also extraordinarily fast, especially for many small things or something flat. But yes, FDM is definitely still the go-to workhorse of printing.

Also, stop using paper towels on your fep and go easy with the spatula. Keeping your fep in good condition is how you go a very long time without failed prints.
I use a soft silicone spatula and gently wipe and stir vat between prints. For cleaing, I use a silicone brush and have long since stopped with the paper towels. A bit of alcohol and some use of the brush is enough to get the vat clean - without scratching the fep at all.

Im no fan of rasin printing.
The epoxy resin is in my opinion only for industrial purpose, or on a highly temperature and toxin controlled environment.
And not being able to smell the rasin, is not the same as it is safe!

I've not used an FDM printer yet, but Resin printing is not that hard. The biggest hurdle is correct setup and calibration. After that, yes, clean up can be a chore, but if you work neat to start, you have less to clean after. I run a Mono X, Mono X 6K, M5s, and a couple DLP's. I recently printed 160 minis from Loot Studios with matching bases in a handful of days. 2 failed due to condition of the vat.
I would like to get into FDM to print larger scene pieces and objects.

@@eriklundqvist4221 It prints great out of the box, probably similar to the X1C from what I've read about that printer. The heated chamber is there when I need it; although it is slow to heat up and the improved air filtration over the X1C is a bonus although I don't have an X1C to compare to. The biggest downside I've found is that X1E spare parts were scarce for several months (possibly due to the printer being new) and need to be ordered through a reseller although I haven't checked on their availability in the last few weeks. Many parts are interchangeable w/ the X1C, but the extruder / hot end is not and needs to be ordered through a reseller. You can also purchase a service contract on the X1E through a reseller which will give you much quicker response than directly from BambuLab from what I've heard on the forums, but you're paying for it. For most people the X1C is good enough and prints probably very similar to the X1E, but if you want the added perks, the intranet security and don't mind paying for them then the X1E is the right choice.

The lack of auto-leveling in most resin printers is horrible; the odor is not the worst part of the resin, so a carbon filter is not enough. Adding and removing resin from the vats is just a horrible, lazy design. I rarely run my four resin printers, but my FDM printers run almost constantly.

Resin printers are fantastic and have been for a long time. They have got slightly more user friendly yes but all of the issues you mentioned are problems caused by you or your settings.
Even the old machines have been extremely competent (I have ran an Etsy shop printing miniatures for years with multiple different printers)
Even the original Photons I had printing consistently with no issues, I would run a print. Clear the bed, run another print. It's extremely rare with resin printers that a failure is the printers fault. There isn't many variables to fail outside of your settings. That being said they're very different to FDM and I don't feel the experience translates well for either.
I think as long as you're willing to take a look at the issue, realise what's going wrong and why and rectify it. You'll have a strong workflow in no time and understand quickly why you're not getting the results you desire.

If I had one piece of advice for your channel, it would be to work on your intonation. Right now it sounds too much like you are reading off a slideshow in front of class. I mean this solely as constructive feedback. I would feel more engaged and less distracted if you sounded a bit more comfortable and excited. Or think of it like the difference between reading a play out loud versus memorizing it and performing. Watch a few political speeches online and see what makes one good and one bad. You have to have a conversation with your audience, not just say the words to them. Just to be clear, you're already doing a good job, I just think this is an area you could improve in to keep the audience more engaged. It's a skill most people gain over time doing content creation or public speaking. Maybe look up some videos on practicing intonation. I actually just watched one called "How to Practice Your Intonation For Expression" and I learned some things hahaha. Just listen to how she speaks. It's almost sing songy. Don't do that necessarily, don't be over the top, just treat the camera like a friend. Right now you are mostly using a very neutral tone. You should ideally sound interested in what you are saying. I used to have a problem where in my informational videos I would raise my tone at the end of sentences which made it sound like I was questioning everything I said. I still do that sometimes. Otherwise I speak too fast or slur words together. Your annunciation and clarity are actually fantastic, so it's just the tonality I notice. Again, totally no offense intended, your video quality is very high. I wouldn't mention anything if I thought you weren't serious about making good content. It's messy, resin stinks, and my track record with 3D printers has been incredibly poor." Your tone gets a little too flat at the end of that second sentence and in between those lines. After that it starts to get more into the reading a script tone, but the "... better resin, better settings, or maybe a better operator." section picks up again too. I think it's the parts of the script you feel the most attached to and remember best that feel the most natural. Hopefully that personalizes it a bit. To be fair, a lot of people in nerdy spaces talk in a kind of dry way, like Aurora Tech for example. Can't wait for more people to harm their health with "new user friendly resin" units lmao. But but but the carbon filter, I can't *smell* the VOCs, surely they're gone.

Do you think carbon filters only work on the VOC you can smell? How would that work, exactly?

Resin is just not worth it…way too toxic and messy…maybe a future innovation will solve it but right now is just too dangerous

That’s totally fair. If you don’t need it, I wouldn’t advise getting into it. But there are many applications where it excels. Maybe we’ll see some non-toxic resins in the future… but until then, it’s important to follow all of the safety precautions.

Seeing you holding a wet miniature above the sink makes me wonder if you really dispose of your waste water in a proper way. Remember that Resin is extremely toxic for the environment.

I was rinsing the IPA off. They had already been cleaned by this point. But good point about the importance of proper disposal!
