Mason Mount has signed for Manchester United, but 60 million pounds is a lot for a player who doesn't seem to perfectly replace any member of the Man Utd squad.
Does he play as a 10? Bruno Fernandes has that position locked down.
Could he play as an 8? He's no Christian Eriksen.
Can he even play on the wing? Rashford might have something to say about that.
So why does Jon Mackenzie think Mason Mount is actually ideal for Manchester United?

Mount is an extremely versatile, hard working player. Every coach he’s had has sung his praises. Many top managers wanted him. It’s crazy to me fans doubt him (saying this as a Chelsea fan unhappy with his departure)
I can endure Havertz leaving, but not Mount. But can't blame Mount. Chelsea became unstable under the new owners. Spent £600m on players and most of them don't fit. Won't be playing UCL. Club trying to recoup money and have to sell. Just hope 23/24 will be better for Chelsea and the new players perform. Hopefully, the board have learnt one or two things.
I am gutted that Mount hasn't worked out at Chelsea long-term, but I am not gutted about him leaving, if that makes sense. Watching Azpilicueta's goodbye video just reinforced that. When the going got tough, Mount mentally and emotionally checked out. It showed both on and off the pitch, and that's not what we need.
cause most of our fans are idiots and I can say that wholeheartedly, I hate this fan base sometimes with the ridiculous takes.
Keeping a player soley because he came through the youth system is stupid. He wanted too much money and wouldn't have played. Simple.
Think you nailed it. He's hard working, versatile and not much else
When comparing to his role in Ten Hag's preferred system, it's much more likely to look like Ajax 21/22 than United 22/23.
That would make sense! So likely a 4-2-3-1 as that's what I recall them playing? With Mount and Case in the pivot and Bruno further forward? Things would of course change around while in possesion.
I think Mount would play the VDB role and Bruno drops deeper. But that’s the good thing, they can switch positions throughout the 90 mins

I think people are really missing the fact that bruno was great as a deep lying playmaker when he replaced eriksen, leading to the weghorst minutes at 10. Hes more energetic and defensively capable than eriksen (not saying hes a good defender by any means, but a solid improvement on eriksen) and one of the major criticisms labelled at bruno, that being his pass completion %, was actually better when he was playing deeper. Also unlike mount, we have evidence for bruno playing this role outside of manchester united as he did it at times for sporting
Im not saying bruno next to casemiro and mount at 10 will be what happens every game or the default, but im honestly surprised how little its getting talked about as a posssibility (not directed specifically at Jon/Tifo, just something ive noticed in the general media coverage of mounts potential role)
Bruno's DLP performance against Everton at OT was one for the books. We were on control of that midfield and Bruno was playing next to Mctominay lol. I am surprised no one praised aside from you has spoken about how well he has played there before.
My only problem is why didn't Ten Hag play Donny in the CAM and Bruno in the DLP role more last season (Not every game, but more last season)?
@@hambakhayaDonny was injured. But I think he's going to be a real surprise this season, should get plenty of minutes.
Mount will definitely be at 8, we shouldn’t sacrifice the best players skill set for someone else
I've noticed this too it's very fluid with Bruno they can change position's during the game they both can play in the wide area/10 and 8
Expect Mount and Bruno as RCM and LCM respectively. Casemiro as a lone CDM and the whole of the back line pushing further up the pitch, so Casemiro doesn't have to cover so much space.
Don't forget the age factor. Casemiro and Eriksen are both 31 this year while Bruno is 28. It's pretty obvious Mount is brought in to replace Eriksen once he hits 33-34 years old in 2-3 years. By then Mount would be 26-27 which is entering into prime age for a midfielder. Added benefit is that he gets to learn from all 3 during those couple of years by training and playing with them.
Mount is gonna replace Erikson right now. Erikson is a great player and was a transformative signing for our squad last year but he just can't keep up physically with the best of the Prem and the Champions league at this point and completely ran out of gas last year after coming back from injury
@@rwalker0130 Eriksen still has a massive part to play though has to be said. Being able to switch between him and Mount will be very nice for Ten Hag
He isn’t a replacement. He is an upgrade.
When lampard brought him up from the academy in his first stint, I always wondered whether Mount will eventually be molded to be a lampard type CM. He hasn’t shown that he has a tendency to shoot or rush to the front like lampard. But maybe this is the jolt and freedom he needs. Maybe by the end of the season, ppl will appreciate the sort of potential he has. And if he starts scoring he will become the modern lampard.
then he can become a manager
Bruno is the modern Lampard
he s the highest scorer and assister for chelsea since he started playing for them.. literally. he has a scholes-esque volley in him and great first and second touch. in ten hag's system especially if we also get Onana and hopefully a CF (still think Kane will be a real possibility just later in the window once he s had the opportunity to come back from his vacation and sit down with postecoglu and levy and let them know he s not gonna sign a new deal and that even if they dont let him move this summer he s gonna move next summer and still go to united - where he can play with rashford shaw and mount; players he knows from england whom with he has great synergy already as well as the most creative player in europe in fernandes and legends of the game in casemiro and varane as well as hugely talented players like martinez and onana and hopefully a sancho that finally finds his rhythm and confidence in a system that actually works all over the pitch.
What? Literally Chelseas highest scorer since his debut, as mentioned in the video.
@@alisankoh4052 Bruno is a 10, Lampard was an 8 or box to box midfielder.
Ten Hag is very good at building a team that does the things he wants them to do. That sounds obvious, but he doesn’t restrict himself to individual players performing set tasks. He is happy to move the position that individual qualities are in, as long as he has a collection of players that have all of those required qualities. His Ajax midfield morphed over a number of seasons with incoming players that weren’t always like-for-like replacements. He built a midfield that aggregated a set of qualities. Mount is just that. He has qualities that Ten Hag feels weren’t being covered across a number of players. That’s in part probably his stamina, his resilience to injury and pressing. None of which are particularly glamorous but watch him succeed.
Also, Mount can carry and dribble better than Bruno but Bruno football i.q and passing is genius
I've seen Bruno slot into that double pivot role with Casemiro last season. Perhaps Bruno could do the Eriksen's role, and have Mount play in Bruno's original position as a 10. Or they could have bruno and Mount as 8's in a midfield three with Casemiro, I see that as the most feasible

True. Italians are geniuses in defence. We don't get such players anymore.
Michael Carrick had that about him as well.
Not in the sense of being an expert defender like Maldini. But that he knew how to defend without needing to make a tackle. It unassumingly kept United tight at the back. Matic was brought for this too but lost his legs.
@@farhadchaudhry Rio also.. My dad always said the best defenders leave the pitch with clean shorts
crazy highlight reels
With Mount on the team, Bruno can stress less and be more innovative with the accumulating numbers of matches. And I hope none of the players get injured in upcoming season.
One of Mount’s biggest strengths is his pressing ability. Another option for Ten Hag is to play two 10s and moving Shaw into an inverted fullback role. This would solve the pivot issue and provide more opportunity to press high. The only danger is that their wingers aren’t particularly defensively responsible…
I can see that, ETH likes high pressure so probably 1 FB would go inverted with casemiro to protect the middle in possession then press high up if we lose possession
Antony is though. it is the others that arent

You people are smoking copium. MM's game is all about pass and press which is not what Utd currently do. He is a student of the Dutch and Barcelona styles of play. It's basketball mathematics where passing the ball creates the spaces. The current Manchester United style is based on exploiting opportunities in transition and Marcus Rashford suits this style perfectly. Ten Hag obviously wants to move away from the 'red rush' style to a more controlled Dutch style becuase it's what he knows. MM is part of that transition. His arrival is part of a program of disruption not evolution. A footballing keeper and a more technical spine to the team seem inevitable
that makes sense, but i still worry about the teams ability to hold on to the ball.
Mount/Bruno/Cas are not known for their perfect passing and ball control. It feels like even the likes of Brighton will finish games with higher possession stats than us (which isnt the be all and end all, but you take my point).
@@samwize28 don’t worry about MM in terms of ball retention. He’s one of those players who retain the ball against all odds. With respect to the others. There’s been a massive improvement since TH arrived. Before that, half the team wasn’t even getting their body position correct to receive a pass for efficient redistribution. But you can only play so many tunes on a broken piano. New more technically effective players will arrive. Slightly worried about Marcus Rashford fitting in. Raheem Sterling can’t retain possession at Chelsea.
great work on the analysis, greaat video too.. but i just have to say, that that shirt is fire
Eriksen will be great to play in the easier home games to offer more creativity and also to bring on as a sub when we need a goal.
This is completely wrong. Utd already played with Casemiro as a single pivot last season. Bruno wasn't a single 10. Both he and either Eriksen or Fred played as advanced 8s/10s on either side of Casemiro. Mount is 100% coming into the team to take Eriksen's place. Maybe he could occasionally fill in other positions in times of major injuries but he'll play most of his time in a midfield 3. If we played a double pivot we would have gone for Caicedo instead of Mount.
John's hand movements makes me feel like everythings gonna be alright
When Eriksen signed, people didn't think he could play that deep...
And he really can't
He had already played much deeper than he used to at Spurs at Inter and Brentford tbf
@@olamilekanakala7542 He can. He doesn't have the pace he used to have at Spurs, but the attributes needed for a deep-lying playmaker are pretty similar to the CAM role he had at Spurs. Passing, vision, ball carrying, composure, set-piece delivery, etc. are all attributes Eriksen still has. The only real change is a lower number of goals and a slightly larger defensive responsibility, but Case does a fantastic job covering (mostly).
You have to make a video about Ancelloti coaching Brazil. It is a turning point in South American football
I think that in a lot of games, where man united would dominate with possesion, we could see mount as that no 8 on the right, alongside bruno, with Casemiro behind them two. What mount would do though, is do something similar to what he did under tuchel a few times when playing as a right winger, and have a partnership with the widest player on the right hand side. With Chelsea, it was Reece James, and with united, it would be antony. You can see on average heatmaps in the 22/23 season that united still have a tendency of players drifting towards the left hand side, which left antony to do all the work on the right. He's more of a link up player imo, so I think you could have Mount overlapping with antony and providing that link up, whilst providing more balance to united, even with sancho as well (if he's still at united). It also enables that flexibility into the final 3rd which was something we kinda missed. I don't see mount playing as a pivot at all for united to be honest, could be wrong though.

He is probably the best player at total football. That’s why he was my favourite player at Chelsea. People get that confused as being the best individual player. He is no where near that. He allows managers to quickly change tactics in game without subbing and yet the standard won’t drop. He makes every player around him better with his intensity on and off the ball. He will improve Fernandez massively. It will go unnoticed but watch for his second assists.

What you have not considered is the possibility of Ten Hag changing his system or moving some personnel around. For example he can play 4-3-3 with Bruno and Mount in 8 or he can use Bruno as an 8 and Mount in 10.
He actually played Bruno in 8 a few times when Eriksen was injured and Sabitzer played in the 10 position, Bruno's performance in 8 were actually world class he has the vision, range of passing, clever touches and work rate to play in that position. This allows Mount to play in his preferred 10 and provide goals from open play, Bruno scores goals as well but I'll argue Mount is more prolific of the two.
So for me it makes more sense to move Bruno to 8 and play Mount in 10 or play both as 8s and they can decide based on the situation who moves forward to support the attack
There’s actually not many players like him in football. The closest I can compare him to is Gavi from Barcelona.
Can you elaborate? What is it that makes them unique? I agree though, they're both very particular 8/10 hybrids.
Mount does way more off the ball than Gavi IMO but Gavi might be slightly more technically gifted. What Mount lacks in skill and natural ability he makes up in tactical awareness which is why every manager he's played under absolutely loves him.
@@areebsiddiqui758dk the stats but Gavi isn’t a player that’s afraid to get stuck in
When United want someone to do the deep playmaker role and Case moves a bit further like you described, its more often than not Bruno who does that and he ll still do it because he has a great ping and Case is a brilliant header of the ball. that wont change. if anything it just simplifies things for United cause Mount's job will remain the same as it ll always be even when the situation calls for this "Switch" lets call it. Mount will be the box to box 8 with the license to make 3rd man runs at the edge of the box and Casemiro and Bruno will play around him not the other way around. Bruno is hugely intelligent positioning wise; go listen to his BT Interview with Rio Ferdinand (same series that they did with Modric - brilliant content btw if you re a young midfielder). Bruno talks about how he has to adapt in different games and modify his role - after all its a pretty free one - depending on the specific game and situation and what he s often found is that "marking the referee" as he called it is pretty effective cause oppo players tend to avoid the space that refs occupy and it often leaves a small gap that can be exploited. That's just one example.
It's very rare that the fans are wrong about a player. If the fans are unhappy to see them go, it usually means they are a sefless soul who is putting in the hard yards. They may not show up as often on highlight reels, but the season ticket holders definitely notice and appreciate.
The core problem is the defensive/progressive side of the game is still hilariously underrated. Your defenders can generally function if your attack is not firing. But if your defence isn't cohering, then your attack is probably screwed too. Everything builds off the back.
I've always felt that the most important and cutthroat position on the pitch is central defence, and consequently your central defenders are your most important players. But they rarely get rated as highly as strikers, attacking midfielders, or wingers. But technical skill ain't everything. Not even close.
Similarly, good attacking players who also have good defensive upsides are underrated. But having a profile that is strong across the board is a lot rarer than people realize.
Nice input details. The only that worried for Mason is his ability on defend
@tifo - Please ask mr goal post to check his facts. Mount said in November - "I like to think I'm a traditional midfielder even though I can play a number of roles for the team," said Mount, speaking back in November. "I've always said that I'm best as a No.8 and I've played there ever since I was a young kid.
Also last season we ran our squad to ground so it's not ideal for mid fielders to start that much game
Been waiting for this one, thank you lads!
I think he missed the detail that bruno is very efficient at the 8 role and played there a few times last season so a set up of mount 10 and bruno 8 could also be expected
Casemiro/Mount are the two signings United needed for a good amount of 4 years in order to play properly a 4-3-3 with the strong wingers they've had. It makes me happy that Ten Hag pulled this off in 2 summers without problem. With Ole this goddamn team were NEVER linked to a proper CDM or to an alternative to Pogba, at the time.

Any thoughts on United switching to a 433, and also using Bruno as an 8? To me that seems like the most logical solution, Ten Hag didn't seem to mind playing him deeper at times last season
They could also fit players into a 3box3 if they wanted now
Damn, Jon. This was really good. I mean, elite tactical analysis!
As a Chelsea fan who has seen him play since his move to Chelsea, I like how you spoke about how he generates space and looks to make those tough passes but in reality, he doesn't make anywhere near the amount of passes he needs to. Another aspect of MM is he is pathetic as a double pivot and as a DLP if Casemiro is moving forward. However, he is good as a situational Double Pivot as seen form his many games. He is also not a No 10 as many believe. He has neither the vision nor the passion range for Bruno. He is a Henderson style of player, a pure 8 with a little bit of everything. He is a HUGE upgrade to MacFred without an iota of doubt.
I don't believe you said that he can be in the either wing. He is horrible in that space. He played as an AMF in the front 3 of the 3421 formation. Having said that with a change in team and quality players around, he may be able to up the ante going next season. He is a huge presser and that I agree.
Mount will not play in the double pivot. If he does, it will be further up the field. As a situational pivot, Mount is fine dropping deep to collect the ball and playing progressive passes. I think you mistake pivot play as CDM. It's not the same thing.

Genuinely asking a question here...
In the Chelsea example, wouldn't Jorginho have been a better pass because he'd put it directly on Havertz's left at a better shooting angle?
Don't get me wrong, it's impressive that Mount has the technique to thread a pass like that, but in the context of getting the goal, it seems to me like the triangle would have set up a clearer chance...

No question the quality and fit are bang on... but £60m for someone who has 1yr left on his contract & is desperate to come?
It was similar with Casemiro - Madrid were desperate to recoup some money & had too many midfielders after buying Tchouameni & Camavinga. Utd also paid double what Anthony was worth.
Consistent theme!
We have clowns in charge of negotiation. We spent so much time just to pay the original asking price.
Mason mount will give a bit of what Ten Hag wanted in Frenkie De Jong, carrying the ball and helping beat the press( not as good as De Jong ). Mount is also good at pressing like Bruno Fernandez. I have no doubt he will be a great signing

Keep dreaming lmao. You all hate to see another mam do better than you gtfoh

I see him more as an 8 than a 10. Hardworking box to box midfielder.
This signing tells me that Ten Hag is going to continue to play on the counterattack against good teams. With Bruno and Mount in the midfield along with a Onana for buildup and then a good striker up top, this team can compete.
I think people have really misread Ten Hag's style. He's much closer to Klopp than Pep. His best Ajax team was so fun to watch because they were insane on the counter. Every thing he's done so far as a manager tells me he wants to have an aggressive pressing side that plays quickly through the thirds. Think how Liverpool used to play when Klopp first got there. Kind of funnny that it's also kind of Rangnick's vision.
Hojlund is also best in a counterattacking side, I think ETH has realised it’s going to take him a few years and a complete squad overhaul before he can implement the actual style he wants.
@@mercurialblonde Pep team has been very direct in comparison to previous teams
Peak Ten Hag teams are dominant in possession but also deadly on the counter
@@mercurialblonde not really tho, he used width from wingers just like pep and not attacking full backs like klopp. He sees defending as an opportunity to control the other team and not as an attacking situation in case the intense pressing works (like what klopp tries to do). @@akshaypadmashali8686 alot of prem sides operate with a single pivot CDM player. Klopp did with Fabinho for years.
Cas if arguably the best in that role in the world - if he cant manage it nobody can.
I suppose we will find out though. The worry will be if/when Cas is unavailable.
@@samwize28 of you have someone like Henderson to support.. who isn't gonna vacate like mount and Bruno..
@@akshaypadmashali8686 valid point. I think Bruno is more hardworking and able to operate deeper than you think though (as evidenced last season). I cant say the same about Mount but perhaps he can too.
Overall i'm not thrilled by the signing. I would rather a controlling midfielder like FDJ, and my expectations for Utd on the pitch next season remains low.
Bruno Fernandes has never been unavailable
This is a very, very good video, Mr Mackenzie.
If ETH has signed then it will be usefull, unlike previous blind signings, which were mere done for commercial purposes
Awesome video.👌👌
I usually hate Utd but I want Mount to do well and prove the haters wrong
I had to zoom to check the green blocks for Martial.
I believe we will add Sofyan Amrabat to our midfield crew and sell Scott Mctominay and Fred leaving us with Christian Eriksen, Bruno Fernandes, Mason Mount, Casemiro, Sofyan Amrabat and Donny Van De Beek(He'll be like a new signing this coming season and is a much better player than either Fred or Scott by far). That's a good midfield with quality options if you ask me. It will be interesting to see what EtH does with Kobbie Mainoo, Hannibal Mejbri and Charlie Savage. Great analysis by Tifo btw!!!
VDB is gone this year. best of luck to him but he didn't impress with the chances he got last year
Thanks for analysis
Id like to see mount hold Bruno's spot for 60 mins and then give bruno 30 mins as a super impact sub
“When Bruno isn’t available”
My brother, Bruno is the single most available player in the world. He played what, 74 matches last season? He always plays
Also Mount fixes the right wing, utd are overly reliant on the left. Mount will bring balance to the attack. I see him alongside Bruno with casemiro sat behind.
What if they opt for a box midfield in possession? Lisandro or dalot becoming the 2nd pivot, Bruno and mount as 8s
Exactly ETH likes to play with 1 inverted FB or tucking in and Martines stepping up....
At 250-300k a week, he better contribute.
Can say the same for almost any player in United's squad.
Seems like a very dynamic player to KEEP THE TEN HAGGIAN NARRATIVE GOING STRONG :3
Great analysis mate👍🏼
I hope to be wrong, but if United wanted a mobile no 8, why not buy a recognised mobile no 8.
DVB is very able to play that role but is very much surplus to requirements.
Honestly I think it's Bruno who gets shifted deeper into midfield and Mount occupying the attacking midfield role or even the right wing role in the tighter games.
Im just glad we signed player that want to join united
Keep them coming! 🫡
Bruh, you guys said the same when we signed Weghorst! I'll just wait to see what happens on the pitch 😂
As a chelsea fan and someone who loves mount, I can tell you 2 things.
1) you paid 20 mill more his actual worth
2) is absolutely trash playing deeper role (CM), his best position is CAM or the left attack
Cutting edge sports journalism is taking nearly 20 minutes to say: this guy is good because he can play in a few different positions...
As a Utd fan it's bittersweet to some extent coz Donnie was supposed to be that Mobile 8 that we got Mount for. Hopefully we can also resurrect that career
Sadly seems the premier League just isn't suited to him.....
I was just as sad when Kagawa didn't work out, he was such a great player but couldn't do it in the premier League.... And look at Sancho....😕
For me, he is a Sancho replacement. Effectively a better no 10, a better presser, better defensively, worse on the edge of the box. But overall it's a positive. Sancho needs to go
Not signing him to play on the wing
Wow mate. What an analysis.
Was waiting just for this.
