HIT THE BELL & TELL A FRIEND ABOUT ME
#LynyrdSkynyrd - Zábava
You'll find that most all the Southern rock band members have the highest respect and admiration for the great (Black) bluesmen and gospel singers.
It was a black man that did sell his soul to the devil to give us every genre of current music! RIP Robert Johnson!
@@akarminius Thats right
@@akarminius That's a stupid rumor. It takes away from the fact that a black
man could play the guitar so well and sing at the same time. Just another way
white people have kept black people down.
@@magnificentfailure2390 huh? No shit its a rumor. Don't try to pull the fucking race card lol. Gtfo
Ironic isn't it?
Never thought I’d ever hear someone refer to a “dope beat drop” in a Skynyrd song 😂
I have to agree
That seriously made me giggle too. 😂
Rt
Lynard skynard has been sampled a lot in hip hop..
Listen to more
Best song which perfectly explains a true relationship of all Southerners - outsiders would never understand
Amen 100% agreed......
God Bless Texas 🤠👍💖🤘
@Ronnie Jace No body cares you insecure ad blaster. Go away.
Yes Sir!
Most would swear you were lying if you tried to tell them your white parents had black friends that used to stop by to visit back in the 50's.
And nobody thought a thing about it.
Rural blacks and white never really had any problems, and I don't remember us having any problems when my family moved into the city and we lived one block from the "black section".
The trouble didn't start until the communists took over the NAACP and set out to divide and conquer America from within.
Yankees have no idea.
My daddy, from rural Alabama, picked cotton for a black man when he was a boy . Nobody thought anything about it. He and the man's son were good friends.
Race relations were no where near perfect but they were not what the media & history try to tell us.
One of their BEST songs in my opinion.
When it comes to culture, people don't realize how important music and elders are. Playing old techniques, styles and songs, to newer generations on even older equipment. It helps keep the past alive, having someone like Curtis Lowe around to influence children kept that style of blues going.
The Blues is what influenced the early UK bands.
@@1bigrowdy My great uncle was a bluegrass singer/musician, he travelled all over Western Europe during the 60s and 70s playing bluegrass in pubs, kept playing as long as people would buy em drinks, and usually someone would let him stay the night with them. That’s how he lived until he came back to the states. Told me no one over there had ever heard of it, and it made him pretty popular.
It’s a cool story, and a brilliant song, but Curtis Loew didn’t really exist. It’s just more of Ronnie Van Zandt’s phenomenal lyrical writing.
It's my favorite song of theirs.
Listen to Blind Willie mc tell.
This helps restore my faith in humanity. If there's one thing that everyone can respect and agree on .... it's good music
Well said, well said brother.
Yessss!! Best Southern Rock band of all time!!
Much Love ❤
One of my favorite Skynyrd songs❤️ Was a sad day when their plane crashed.
Liz. Yes indeed. I remember that day very well. 20 OCT 1977. Had tickets for the ATL show. That was the DAY OUR MUSIC DIED...
I love this song
That bird just couldn't fly high, could it?
The story behind it was crazy the drummer Artimus Pyle woke up seeing his friends dying around him and somehow managed to get up to go get help and some dude shot him because he was on his property before going out and seeing how injured Pyle was then they called for help. Whole story was wild. I just wish they had actually gotten their plane serviced. We might still have Ronnie and the Gaines siblings here with us today
This song hits me in the feels... I danced with my daddy to this song on my sweet 16. He passed away 4 years ago.
My condolences for your loss
Condolences love. He’s looking down on you smiling
As a father I can tell you that Sweet 16 dance was the best dance of my life
Sending Love and Hugs to you. Sorry for your Loss
Simple Man, Tuesdays Gone, That Smell and Saturday Night Special are your next to check out
Gimme Back my Bullets, Gimme Three Steps..
On the Hunt, T for Texas, I Need You, Travellin Man. The LIVE performances can’t be beat.
On the hunt as well

James Tate. Keep in going.
Curtis Loew. You hit the best of the best tonight, bro.
Ronnie was a story teller that painted the clearest pictures in my mind!
Yes Ronnie was incredible a writing way ahead of his time creating stories you could close your eyes listen to the music and it would be almost like you were watching a movie or story.
He was amazing
This song is a true story a tribute to the man who taught him to play the guitar kinda gives the song a little more of a meaning welcome to southern rock
I was hoping someone would post this story.
Curtis Loew wasn't a real person according several interviews by the band.
"Curtis Loew is not the name of an actual person from Ronnie Van Zant's life. Rather, Curtis Loew is a composite of different people, including Skynyrd lead guitarist Ricky Medlocke's grandfather, Shorty Medlocke."
But along this same theme :
Rufus " Tee Tot " Payne was a real person , a street musician in Greenville , AL , circa 1931 . He tought Blues singing and playing to an eight year old Hank Williams .
Gary Rossingtons grandfather
@@KrunkStack Exactly, Shorty Medlocke used to play a dobro on his porch when Ronnie and Ricky were kids. That's where the dobro line is from. The rest has to do with Ronnie Van Zant's love of all the old bluesmen and the story is a metaphor for so many of those bluesmen that didn't get to be famous and died broke. It was as much a tribute to those men by Ronnie as anything.
When he was talking about “picker” he was talking about picking on his dobro. Not a racial thing. So hard R or not, he was referring to picking the blues
Yep, Listen to Sweet Home Alabama.. Now Muscle Shoals has got the Swampers. And they've been known to pick a song or two (yes they do), also refers to Picking (Blue Grass) Ronnie loved the Blues and Blue Grass music and it heavily influenced their music.
Or musically how it flows and is easier to sing without the hard consonant at the end of the word.
Exactly kind of sad that this is the first place his mind went. Not judging as he has had different life experiences.
I think it was sarcasm, he didn't think it was racist.. kinda funny how he said "pickkkaaa" tbh
Pretty obvious
What moves me about this song is “on the day old Curtis Died, nobody came to pray, preacher man said some words and they chunked him in the clay” but look at the impact this man had on even just One soul!
Si when you’re thinking you’re alone, and no one else cares about you, remember- your life and interactions will have had some meaningful impact on somebody you may have thought DIDNT really care, but they did! Great great song.
❤
Ronnie was a artist who seem things and people in a unique way
Also thinking of such a little boy. He can’t control this passion for music, and the amazing artist he has found. He takes repeated whippings and still goes back. That’s neglectful, in my view. You gotta help your kids explore these interests. Even if that means you take your @$$ to the corner store and watch your child watch this man.
All I Can Do Is Write About It is my favorite Skynyrd song!!
Yes! But gotta find the right version
@@miconis123 agreed
Mine too but hardly anybody ever requests it.
Top 5 for me
@@miconis123 the acoustic version
When they were in grade school ,a teacher told them they wouldn't amount to anything as a joke, they named their band after him Leonard Skinner
Well actually High School PE teacher and Coach .
Is that why the simpsons had a principal skinner?
True that!!
Robert E Lee senior high. In Jacksonville Fl.
Yep
They are a band way ahead of themselves. Considered southern rock but they were just a great rock band.....
Southern Fried Rock.
.38 Special
Molly Hatchett
Allman Brothers
Etc....
They are as "southern rock" as you can get. Long haired country boys every one of them.
Back in the day, though, Gary Rossington said "we're not southern rock, we're ROCK rock." You can find and hear this quote.

@@JasonSmith-jr7jh
I remember it well but you aren't conveying it properly or you don't remember or missed his point entirely.
His point was that Rock n Roll itself was born and developed in the South by Southerners,..Therefore it seems weird to call their music "Southern Rock".
His point was that all Rock n Roll (in its pure form of course) is Southern.
I've cashed in my fair share of soda bottles, anyone else?😄😄😄
Still
ABSOLUTELY
Cans at a camp ground. Get some money and head to the corner store for some ice cream.
Dragged our little red wagon all over town collecting bottles to go buy a bagful of penny candy!
Tried to explain to my kids, going to the corner store for a Coca-Cola and not having enough money to buy the bottle. So we had to drink our purchase in the store and leave the bottle cause we couldn't cover the nickle deposit.
Oh how far we have come.
My all time favorite band!! Original Skynyrd pre crash October 20, 1977 ♥️ You can’t go wrong with any song choice 🔥🎶🎸🎤 “Searchin” is a great song that doesn’t get many reactions ♥️
Mine too, Vickie! I still miss Ronnie to this day.
Show got that right
So is "Things Goin' On"
I Need You and Roll Gypsy Roll relates to me because I’m a tramp of the road. I have to travel to find work so away from home many of miles away at most times. Let’s keep the Skynyrd flame burnin forever 🙏
Loved Lynyrd Skynyrd dude. If you haven't reacted to Free Bird or Simple Man, you are missing out. Loved this reaction. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
This song always brings a tear of joy to my face. Both so sad and so incredible that this old wino never knew how much his music meant to this little boy. Never knew that one of the greatest songs in history was written...about him. RIP Curtis/Ronnie
Me too
RIP Ronnie, I wish you were still here we need more of your positive music in a world filled with such hatred and negativity.
I love this song and knew those boys. They went to a rival High School of mine and I worked at The Warehouse - a local Jacksonville recording studio where they did some recording. I also got a big kick out of my teenage son coming to me one day saying "Mom, You just gotta hear this song I just heard on the radio!" he drug me out to the car and turned the music up. Boy was he amazed when I knew all the words and even sang to him the words from the beginning of the song that I had missed. My teen aged boy in the mid 90s had just heard Free Byrd for the very first time. He didn't know his mom was so cool.
Im from Germany and i love that Kind of music a Lot !
This song always takes me back to my childhood. My best friend and I used to sneak beer from his dad's fridge and go to their neighbors house, Mr. Jessie. He was an older black man and he would get drunk while we talked about chickens and told us stories. You couldn't help but love Mr. Jessie after meeting him.
Lyrically this song is so strong
It irritates me how these guys especially before the plane wreck are associated with racism
This song to me reinforces that was not true and it’s not the only one
If anyone out there doubts or misunderstands listen again
I get it. It's irritating. I think that comes mostly from that flag. I don't think anybody who seriously listened to Ronnie Van Zant thought he was racist.
His brother, well... that's another story, but Ronnie was cool.
Applying 21st Century virtue signaling to the 1970's .
@@filianablanxart8305 The 70s weren't THAT long ago, so it doesn't bother me too much. Most of the people involved are still around and can be asked about it.
It bothers me when it's applied to, say, the Romans or the vikings or something.
@@chrisd7047 Southern heritage culture in the 7o’s looked at thru modern lenses is a mistake.
@@MrThankman360 Again, you say that as though the '70s were a really long time ago. They weren't. I was born in the '70s and my parents are still alive. Was it different? Sure, a little, maybe. I'm not claiming that everyone who has ever flown that flag is some KKK-card carrying racist. I was a huge Dukes of Hazzard fan as a kid, and I'll fight anyone who says the Dukes were racists.
That said, that battle flag DOES represent some pretty dark times for a lot of people. The "heritage" being romanticized is one that fought for the right to own other humans. That's just immutable fact. If you think black people weren't bothered by the Stars and Bars in the '70s, you're wrong. They were, they just weren't comfortable making a stink about it. If you don't believe me, ask a black person who remembers the 1970s. There are millions of them still around.
Any Skynyd is good Skynyrd. Saw the twice before 1977. Blew the roof off.
“Call me the breeze” or “gimme three steps” is some great songs you would like from skynyrd!
The one and only Skynyrd. Based on a true story. Southern Rock isn't dead, check out BlackBerry Smoke if you dare. Ain't Much Left Of Me is one of my favorites from BBS. ✌
Yes!! Curtis Loew is one of my favorite Skynard tunes 🙌
One of my all time favorite Skynyrd songs!
Check out call me the breeze thats a good upbeat song by them also
Tuesdays gone. Is dope beautiful piano and great guitar
Tuesday’s Gone is absolutely beautiful.
Hey- Thank you for putting this up because Ronnie(as I know from my understanding and research and a child of the south from the 70's) was absolutely everything about who a person is regardless of pigmentation but about representation and reputation.
We all learn and love from so many experiences in our lives. People also learn hatred and racism the same way. Especially when we are younglings, like the lyrics says 'Curtis was about 60 and I'd probably be about 10" A young impressionistic youth not yet influenced by someone like his mama "would whip him again " for keep on going to hang out with Curtis.
This is a true story by the way.
The best honest things anyone can write about comes from true experiences.
You can still go to the same liquor store in Gainesville FL that Ronnie would go see Curtis.
The most heart fetl, and important, lines are
"when old Curtis died, nobody came and prayed, the preacher said some words and they chucked him in the clay"
I grew up as a yankee transplant for 10 yrs over the battlefield of Manassas VA. I was shunned and even beat up because I was from the north in the late 70's. I never ever took anything lightly when it came to equality but had been seriously influenced to think otherwise as a child.
I have read that Mr VanZant did love his southern culture but was opposed to racism and violence especially with the use of fire arms. He wanted to sing his songs, drink his whiskey, and go fishing. Unfortunately, as I know from other friends of mine in current bands, that other people want to misappropriate a band's heritage and culture to make it part of some political or ideological theme regardless of the exact opposite of the band's message that is plain as day in the lyrics.
Thanks again.
There is a Curtis Lowe in every aspect of life for everyone if they are willing and open enough to receive the beauty and grace of the soul that lives within the human form shell.
Peace To All Good People
“The Needle And The Spoon” and “I Need You” from the Second Helping Album are quality tunes brother.
I love "I need you" so much! I'm honestly shocked so many fans commented.. but you're the only one I've seen that mentioned it!
I need you is an epic!
On the hunt!
Could not agree more. Their best album.
I need you!
One of my favorite songs. To me it expresses how every human being has a gift. A gift that God gave to each of us and can be shared with others. Humanity will win in the end. God promised us this.

Great song, legendary band! Saw em in 75. Flawless gig.
This is a true song that really happened to the lead singer Johnny. This is one of if not my favorite songs by Skynard. They’re by far my favorite band
True story for Ronnie not Johnny. Also I believe that liquor store was torn down a couple years ago.I also believe Ronnie got violent when he drank, and would fight band mates, they said he was short tempered. The song That Smell is a good listen.Leonard Skinner was their PE teacher that would send them home for having long hair.ok I’m done…..SKYNYRD NATION
These guys and The Allman Brothers. My brutha-the most beautiful, soulful music! So happy to see another pair of ears/eyes opened even farther. 👊🏽
One of my favorites from Skynyrd!
I could have sworn that you have reacted to "Free Bird" but, maybe I am wrong but, just in case, Free Bird MUST be done LIVE! 1977, Oakland. . . . .
One of my favorite songs of all time.
Omg I love this song takes me back to the eighties and hanging out with all my classmates after football or at party’s we loved this song! Awesome it’s being brought back out! Saw this group many times in concert!
Skynyrd was one of the first three cassettes I ever bought, ca 1982. It was the incredible live album One More from the Road. The other tapes I got that day were Billy Joel, The Stranger, and Styx, Paradise Theatre.
Hands down, gotta play " cheatin woman" & " Mississippi kid". Shit is lit !
Factss I like cheatin woman
This is an iconic song, the lyrics tell a plausible story and the musicality of this record makes it a classic. It's nearly up there with "I need you" which is in a minor key which I'm biased towards.
That soul you hear is something special straight from the west side of Jacksonville, Fl. We’re a different breed down here.
as a man raised on this type of music by my father who passed away peacefully last year, I love that you showing love for some Curtis Lowe. Respect
Fantastic seeing this get play! The track has been my alltime second favorite song as long as I can remember° ...the reality, respect & emotion shown in it is absolutely perfection. I can close my eyes and see all the geat, and sadly usually under appreciated, blues men of yesteryear across the country, forgotten in the shadows, playing to anyone and everyone that will listen. And the idea those local streetcorner blues guys were quietly inspiring young children who would go on to become rock legends themselves is so romantic. I see this song as a perfect tribute to them all. Glad you liked it!
° second, after only Otis Redding's *The Happy Song (Dum Dum)* which is another track with a very similar reality, respect and emotional drive; with his being a tribute to wives (Otis audibly cracking up, in my head likely giggling, when describing his wife smiling at him gets me every single time - I highly recomend you check out that track if you get a chance!)
I love this song, and the story it tells, it's real and from the heart!
tks my Friend my Brother
enjoying this with U has made my world better
I forgot how damn amazing this song was!! Thanks for bringing me back!! Just respecting great music. It’s all love for sure!
My personal favorite Skynyrd song
Fun fact: Ronnie rarely ever wrote his songs down. They were all in his head. We lost a one of a kind back in ‘77.
It seems all the great ones leave us way to soon. Much love❤️
Love this reaction Van!!!!! Great reaction bro, look forward to more of your reactions to this legendary band!!!! - Ven
I love Skinnyrd, but ashamed to say never heard this song😪 but I absolutely loved it!!!!!!
My 2nd favorite Skynyrd tune. Number one is Free Bird. Thanks.

My favorite Lynyrd Skynyrd song.
It’s been a minute since I’ve watched LFR fam. I love the transitions snd the effect overlays on the video during the songs. It really makes it seem like it’s part of the song. Good job! Keep killing these reviews!
The band members all grew up on the Westside of Jacksonville FL, Once Ronnie figured out they were going somewhere , he made sure they spent hours a day making sure they got every note down
They have a song called "Mr. Banker" that is amazing. It's a hidden 💎
One of their best and under appreciated.
Riding your vibes man! Keep up the dope reactions, rock, rap, hip hop, oh yeah!!!
I’ve just discovered your channel. I love seeing people’s genuine reaction to great music. Great stuff!
I got a kick from your reaction to one of my favorite L.S. songs that I've been listening to since it hit. I've seen a couple of your other videos and they are very intertaining.Good Vibe, it's about the music & the song's 👍
Thank You John!! Appreciate the support. Lynyrd Skynyrd killed that THANG!
Check out "On the Hunt" I think you'll like that. One of my favorites ❤
I’m sooo glad you did this song. Definitely one of their very best and one of the best southern rock/blues song of all time.
My Jam since 1972. Got many sunburns all over the south at their outdoor concerts.
Just wait when he hear Free Bird.
Especially the live version!!
My thougts 😉
You sure got that right
Right or wrong. Best Skynard song imo and totally underated and unknown compared to the rest
Right or wrong makes the hair stand up on my arms everytime I hear it and I'm 54 and have listened to Skynyrd all my life.👍🏻
I was 15 in 1974 when I bought Lynyrd Skynyrd - 'Second Helping,' the album from which this song comes. "The Ballad of Curtis Loew" was, and still is, my favorite tune off the record. Most people prefer "Sweet Home Alabama," but not me. Back in the day, many of us would scour the neighborhoods "searching for soda bottles" for money, too. The 16 oz ones got ya nickel and the quart ones scored a dime. Back then gas was about 45 cents a gallon! Anyway excellent example of the blues played well by white guys paying tribute to a "black man with white, curly hair" who also was "the finest picka to ever play the blues." Great tune to react to!! 🤟✌
Love it my man! Been subscribed for a while.
When they refer to him as “the finest picka” they mean he was the best guitar player to play the blues
More specifically the finest lap/steel guitar player
And there was no reason to infer it was meant any other way....
Next: "Saturday Night Special." Every guitarist in this band smoked.
Just stumbled along your channel and absolutely love it, nothing brings people together like music. Thanks man and hope all works out for you.
Yeah brother another gem from skynyrd. Good music has no boundaries. Just pure love and entertainment!!!!
Being from Jacksonville Florida and friends with the band members. RIP my friends. Alot of the places still exist in the Skynyrd songs! Skynyrd started it all!! The places that don't exist anymore like HELL HOUSE is a travesty!!!
I copied the words to Simple Man the both of my boys were born. They have those copies to this day. They are 32 & 29. Lynard Skynard was the ultimate Southern Rock band
This song always gets me in the feels. A ballad for his hero ❤️
Great reaction. Really appreciating the music.
They wrote ALL of their songs. Unbelievable musicians. I hope you can find some video of actual performances. Ronnie had "it". Whatever it was, he had it.
They were all from Jacksonville FL.
LOL you'a special effects are on point. Didn't use the hard R.
Much obliged. I am having a tremendously nice time listening to music with yoy.
Hey my brother, I hit that thang as soon as your page loaded. Loved this. Great song. Thank you. Much love.
you have to change your branding to LFAH Family, can't use a hard R. LOL Much Love!!!
This has been my favorite song for over 30 years. Got a cassette as a kid, memorized it. I'd highly suggest Simple Man. You'll have to excuse me, but I probably won't watch it. Hits me too hard. Amazing song though.
Definitely nice and smooth!! I've thought so for decades!😀😀👍👍
Van that is my favorite band. They were and still are the best In my mind. Southern Rock the way it was meant to be. And yes they do have soul. I play almost everyone of their songs and have always loved and respected it. I am thrilled you seem to like it as well. Love you channel. Keep up the good work brother. 🙏🏼🇺🇸👍
Tuesday’s Gone is actually the song playing at the end of Happy Gilmore if you’ve seen the movie?
And when the party is ending at the Moon Tower in Dazed and Confused
you know when he's saying "picker" he's talking about him picking on the strings of his
Dobro guitar. they weren't saying he was a cotton picker, common misunderstanding
One of my favorite songs of all time. Loved your reaction man! Finest picka to ever play the blues! ❤️
Love that song and your review. Great stuff.
Picker as in finger picking a guitar as a playing style.
The devil wears a suit and tie Colter wall, gotta listen to it man! It will shock you
One of the best bands ever. I will never forget where I was October 20, 1977.
One of the first LS songs I loved... heard it in the early 1970's. Beautiful. Thank you for your review!
