Let's give a hand to Billy Powel for his magnificent contributions playing the piano for Lynyrd Skynyrd. He was a classically trained pianist. Originally he was a roadie for the band. Story goes that during a break and brief moment of downtime he was overheard by the band playing a piano. The rest is history and a beautiful one at that. RIP Lynyrd Skynyrd!

This is one of Skynyrd's songs that separate them from the rest. No one could do what they do with a melting of smooth blues, easy listening, country, and rock. It still gets me emotional, especially after Gary's death just recently. Right now, if I was driving, I'd have to pull over. 🥲

My favorite Lynyrd Skynyrd song. As others have noted, Gary Rossington passed away earlier this month. He was the last surviving member of the original band.
Lynyrd Skynyrd’s first three albums were produced by Al Kooper. He did many remarkable things - wrote “This Diamond Ring” For Gary Lewis & The Playboys, played the organ on Bob Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone”, co-founded both The Blues Project & Blood, Sweat & Tears and was the stage manager at The Monterey International Pop Festival.

I was starting to hear a lot of buzz about a group called "Lynyrd Skynyrd" back in the 70s after they toured as an opening act for "The Who". What was so special is that, during one (or more) of those concerts, the entire crowd was yelling for more Lynyrd Skynyrd even after The Who appeared on stage, ready to perform. Remember, back in those days there was no internet, no social media and no Entertainment Tonight (yet). Word traveled by mouth or through regular nightly news reports. My first introduction to them was their "Street Survivors" album which I purchased on its release date. Sadly, they were gone a few days later. I have since back-tracked their collection and obtained a number of their albums. A great band that was lost far too early.😕 Peace & Love🕊❤

It was a hot day! Early July. Long great concert...Outlaws, Santana, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Peter Frampton head lining. Every band put on a great show, but Skynyrd was my favorite. I was 15 - a total Skynyrd head and I remember so clearly watching Ronnie sing and being mesmerized by the music. A rockin day of music for sure. And just three months later I, and so many others, were totally crushed by the plane crash. It was shocking - one of those when you remember where you were when you heard the news. So similar to how I felt when Stevie Ray Vaughn died. Thanks for the great reaction as usual!

Gary Rossington making that guitar sing on this one. So apropos to play this one right after Gary’s passing. One of their classics, for sure. I just spent a few days outside of Jacksonville and all I could think about was this is Lynyrd Skynyrd’s home and it gave me a sense of their roots.

A very interesting song besides being a banger. It describes the effects of a major life change, namely the bands signing to a record deal. Everything is different after the event; the past, "Tuesday" as it is labeled , cannot be reclaimed. And while you may lament it's absence, only the future, new and unknown, is available to you. You've "got to carry on"!

This is one of the greatest albums in rock history, especially considering it was the first album put out by a bunch of kids barely into their 20s. Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man, Tuesdays Gone, Things Goin' On, AND Freebird all on one album. They oncorporated a small symphony ON THEIR FIRST ALBUM. That's so assured and confident - they KNEW it was awesome, not corny. Freaking amazingly talented band - glad you all are starting to get into them! Their producer (Al Kooper) didn't want them to record Freebird ("it's way too long and will never get played!") - Ronnie asked him to step outside, told him to get in his car, and not come inside without his permission. Then they recorded it on their own... Thank the Lord Ronnie was a hard ass - Kooper said "Ronnie was VERY convincing..." lol
If you all ever get to Muscle Shoals, gotta check out the sound studios there - between them they put out over 200 charting rock, blues, and R&B songs. Aretha, Dylan, Stones, Skynyrd, Allman Bros, Clapton, Harrison, Rondstadt, Seger, Wilson Pickett... Percy Sledge was discovered nearby (literally as a share cropper) and recorded his first song "When a Man Loves a Woman" there. The tours are amazing journeys into music history. All in a redneck little town in Alabama. :-) Skynyrd LOVED it there amd recording with the house bands ("Now Muscle Shoals has got the Swampers, amd they been known to pick a song or two..."), who were legendary in their own right.
And RIP Gary - thanks for the music.

Lynrd Skynyrd is one of those bands that's like pond full of tasty fish - all the good stuff lies beneath the surface. Tuesday's Gone, Free Bird, Sweet Home Alabama, Gimme Three Steps are all songs that defined how our culture came to view Skynyrd - you guys have done a good job of digging deeper with songs like I Need You, but there is yet another, deeper layer to Skynyrd that you have to hear to understand. I could wax poetic about how different the world would see Skynyrd and how much bigger they'd be than they already are, but I'll just list a couple examples for you to check out. Whether or not you make a video reacting to them doesn't matter, this is an experience that will add something to your life.

Pretty cool story on how the piano player, Billy Powell joined Lynyrd Skynyrd… “Around 1970, Powell found work as a roadie for Lynyrd Skynyrd and remained a member of the crew for two years, during which the band secured a support role for the band Mountain. In 1972, Skynyrd played a show at the Bolles School prom. During a break at that event, Powell sat down at a piano and played a song. When the band realized their roadie's ability, he was offered the position of keyboardist” (from Wikipedia).
