Remember, he should get a power boost in the DC Multiverse, he's fundamentally a legit Superman variant just like Ultraman, he's what Superman is in the warped "The Boys" reality. Homelander's Universe's physics laws limit his abilities like the inability to save that plane. That also is impossibleon our real Universe, Superman couldn't catch a plane in our Universe either. The materials the plane is made out of couldn't survive the attempt intact.

Superman is actually really smart and processes information at superhuman speed. He's even capable of having conversations with the Flash at crazy speeds. He'd no doubt be able to figure out that he's dealing with someone more fragile than they appear and avoid a killing blow, and he likely has to do this fairly often considering the types of opponents he's often matched against. It's part of the reason why he always has to hold back so much. His reasonings for it are twofold: 1. So he doesn't accidentally hurt/kill someone who doesn't deserve it, and 2. So he doesn't accidentally cause any unnecessary property damage, especially critical infrastructure that could put people in danger.
He's more the kind of character who's more likely to end up in a situation in which he's pleasantly surprised he doesn't have to hold back so much for once rather than the type to accidentally go too far.

I feel like people get too caught up in the comparisons instead of enjoying each story differently. The Boys is more grounded, Invincible is a satire (in a more literal sense, obviously it's not a comedy and takes its self seriously), Brightburn is a thriller. These are all very different takes than the traditional Superman and are not meant to be comparable in terms of strength.
The reason I like omni man so much is because he’s actually the OPPOSITE of a “corrupted superman”. As in, what may happen when a good person is indoctrinated for CENTURIES from birth into committing morally reprehensible things, then realising *why* they are morally reprehensible in the first place.

In the "Boys" Universe, Superman might be no more powerful than Homelander. It might not be possible for a Humanoid being in that Universe to be so.

He's already strong enough to take down planes and casually pick trucks up that weigh 2 and a half tons, and he's fast enough to liquify a man just by flying through him. His species sends him to Earth alone to conquer all of it and at one point in the movie he has a dream about destroying the whole planet with his heat vision. All signs point to him being at least a planet-level threat as an adult.

He was so afraid of this happening that he ran away from the fight. Superman on the other hand has clones of himself that are just as strong if not stronger and still beats them.

Superman may have the kryptonite factor, but HL never had to fight another being of equal or greater power in his life while fighting character like HL is what Superman does every other tuesday. If anything, his lack of weaknesses is his GREATEST weakness.
Human shielding with kids won't work, as Superman can move so fast he can escape the bonds of infinity, he can snatch those kids away from HL before HL knows what happened. And it's not like Superman hasn't dealt with people who fight dirty before.
And that's ignoring other things like how Superman is strong enough to literally shatter an entire multiverse, survive being crushed between two galaxy sized planet, his heat vision has more applications and can be amped up if needed, has trained with experienced fighters like Batman and Wonder Woman, has literally fought 1,000 years alongside Thor (so throw in the experience advantage), as well as more abilities that Homelander doesn't really have a reliable counter for.
