People will NOT talk to you on the street or in a store, and if they do, they think it's kind of fake, like you want something. Depending on where you are in America, it's more awkward to NOT speak to people as you pass them (be it an 'ope', 's'cuse me' or 'hey there'. @@eleanor5068 short answer: the british government had no idea what they were doing and initially decided to allow most of the population to contract covid 19 on the grounds of achieving “herd immunity,” without revealing the medical research behind that decision. i was exaggerating >~

    • @fluffygreysocks6703
      @fluffygreysocks6703 Před 4 lety +4

      @@eleanor5068 long answer: when Covid 19 was classified as a pandemic, the british government was incredibly lax about implementing protective strategies like testing people and social distancing because they thought they could achieve “herd immunity,” which would prevent a second peak of the virus in the winter. they WANTED to let younger age groups contract the virus under the assumption that most would recover and subsequently be immune. the UK’s chief scientific advisor, Sir Patrick Vallance, said that about 60 percent of people would need to be infected to achieve herd immunity.
      so of course, people interpreted this as the government deliberately trying to get 60% of the population to fall ill. that wasn’t the actual intention of the government, apparently their goal was to flatten the curve by staggering the onset of infections, an effect of which could be herd immunity. but was a terrible decision for several reasons, namely: (1) herd immunity is generated with vaccinations not on a deadly infectious agent, (2) there’s no way to completely isolate the most vulnerable people because the elderly and those with respiratory issues and chronic illnesses need the help of healthy youth, which is the exact demographic that they wanted to infect, (3) delaying isolation for the sake of long-term results when there is a crisis at hand is plain dumb.
      we don’t have enough research on covid 19, especially research available to the public, to justify their actions, and the models and data that influenced the government’s strategy haven’t been published.
      they have since abandoned the plan and imposed quarantine- keep in mind this was several weeks ago.
      but holy shit the incompetence of policy AND communication is baffling to me. and my reference point is the fucking pumpkin. political satire is my pumpkin pie, the thing i have to look forward to when i’m maneuvering through a political landscape that reminds me of a shitty haunted house constructed in honor of Halloween, the holiday who’s only purpose is dressing up like a caricature of some creature or character whose life would probably be better than your own, advertising useless seasonal crap to the general public, and terrifying the youth of the nation.

But a German friend of mine pointed out (saying this just because I don't know any Brits lol) that yeah they definitely are colder at first than Americans, but once you have a German friend you're actually friends and Americans often drop new friends. For Americans, if you haven't hung out at least several times you're not actually friends yet. And for Germans, at least according to my friend, once you've hung out you actually are friends now.
    But for the rest, yeah, this is why I don't eat at places like the Cheesecake factory. Sucrose gives me migraines so I've definitely adopted a not very American diet lol.
