    the "who'd've thought?" 😂 but it really is strange how much America wants to control women's bodies, only for women to find out they care about the foetuses and as soon as the kid is out of the womb it's no longer seen as necessary for the parent/s to get help or support. Logic and concern don't seem to be America's real concerns.

    Corry, thanks for putting together this analysis. Over here in the USA, we hear lots of stuff about abortion, but it is rare to hear anyone put together an analysis that explicitly notes religious views, and then clearly states that we need to do a secular analysis. As you correctly noted, ideas held for religious reasons cannot be analyzed analytically, because that's not what that is about. So your run-through was helpful. I especially like how you pointed out implicitly that those who claim to want to avoid harm should in principle also be lobbying for full funding of support (food, clothing, shelter, fuel, health care) for kids through age 18, and for their caregivers. While the UK is far from perfect in these areas, the US is generally much worse in these regards, which makes our religious lobbyists worse hypocrites than yours are. Thanks again.

    Showing this video to someone the next time I get into an argument about this. You make the arguments a lot better than I can. Thank you for this.
    The point about taking someone off life support is especially poignant. I used to work in critical care and watched a lot of patients suffer on life support way too long. Often because the family was so fixated on simply keeping their loved one alive, not their quality of life. People have a misconception of life support. People can be more conscious and be reliant on life support such as a ventilator, IV medication, tube feeding, and sometimes crrt which is constant filtration of the blood. Crrt is complex but a simple explanation is it's kind of like dialysis but constant instead of every few days. The body also degrades rapidly while bedridden and on life support. Bed sores, skin ulceration (from tubes, adhesives, wires), muscle atrophy, drop foot, etc. Patients are heavily sedated when on life support but the meds affect everyone differently. Some people are still semi conscious. Others have vivid hallucinations and nightmares. Many end up with PTSD if they do recover. I have had patients that later remembered specific things I said when they were heavily sedated and on life support. One patient remembered my voice 2 months after they left the ICU. I only cared for them when they were unconscious. Patients sometimes recall the pain they were in and how much they just wanted to die. Imagine being in that state for over a month while your family argues about what to do. I am not saying that taking someone off life support is always the answer, but a lot of people have this movie influenced idea that their love one will just suddenly wake up and be totally fine. That's never how it works. I've legit had patients frantically beg me to let them die after months of suffering. While their family continues to say "Do everything you can" even when the patient is actively dying and there is no medical way to stop it.

      (ok so im going to exclude religions/personal beliefs from this because not everyone believes them. i am also excluding situations like self-defense because that’s a whole other topic)
      killing is wrong because it hurts other people. it not only hurts the person who was killed (as there are very few painless ways to kill someone), but it also hurts the loved ones of that person. it causes grief. additionally, why should someone have the authority over whether or not someone else has the right to live? that doesn’t seem fair

    As a disabled person I find it really difficult when a foetus is aborted because it might be disabled. In the UK babies with Downs syndrom can be aborted up to term. In 2015 Denmark had a 98% abortion rate for babies with Down's syndrome and it was similar in Iceland. As an autistic adult I worry that if we ever developed pre-natal screening for autism there'd be an awful lot of people deciding, through ignorance and prejudice, that they didn't want to risk having a child like me. I'd love to live in a world where disability is no longer such a financial issue for parents and where we accept disabilities and disabled people far more than at present.

      Even in 2020 a GP in the UK was criticised because they said autistic adults should have DNR orders in place.

    • @kaydenasher7430
      @kaydenasher7430 Před rokem +15

      I am disabled as well and for me, I believe having an abortion just because of a potential disability is wrong due to ableism, with that said, to protect everyone’s right to an abortion we would also have to protect theirs so I would never advocate for it to be illegal to do so. If we start restricting the right to an abortion in certain circumstances it opens up a lot of ways to restrict abortion for everyone. A lawyer for the ACLU said this: “in order to protect the best of speech we also have to protect the worst of it.” This was in reference to free speech and hate speech, but the basic principle of it could also apply to abortion.

    • @deadlymelody27
      @deadlymelody27 Před rokem +9

      The only argument i have for this is, do you want someone raising a disabled child who doesnt want to raise a disabled child? Because there is down syndrome screening here and i never knew what i would do with that decision until I got the results back and they said it was unlikely that my child would have down syndrome. But i knew that it didnt matter and that i would love my child regardless and i dont think i wouldve aborted based on that. And im pro abortion. If there had been a life limiting illness (there are ones where the child wont survive much past childbirth) then i wouldve to reduce harm and suffering for all. Just like i would happily have an autstic child. I went into pregnancy knowing that my partner has a fair bit of autism in his family, as do I and so my child could well be and I chose to have a child knowing that. A friend i made while pregnant had a child with down syndrome after knowing it was a high possibility and chose not to take testing further because she knew she would still have the baby.
      It sounds bad but i would rather people who would make those decisions make those decisions because do you really want people who would decide based on disability raising a child with a disability?
      Does that make sense? Obviously you can say im out of line, i dont have a disability (although i was tested for autism as an adult and im not), so it isnt my experience to speak about. But i think you would be surprised how many people would still be absolutely willing and love to raise disabled children, and im sure we ALL have seen those who really shouldnt be (im talking about like "Autism Moms" who make their childs disability or neurodivergence about themself)

    this is probably a harsh way to put it, but forcing people to have children when they aren’t ready for one is so damaging to everyone involved. the parent isn’t ready to take care of a child, usually resulting in them unintentionally causing a lot of trauma for their child
    so now if you think about it, would you rather have a child never exist, or have them deal with trauma and the suffering that comes with it?
    “they don’t always get trauma” it does happen very often though. a lot of people with horrible childhoods are that way bc their parents weren’t ready to take care of their children

      God I remember sitting in my friend's bedroom after a sleepover at her place, listening to her mother sob and throw stuff all over the place, screaming at her that she should have chosen the abortion... As abusive as my own parents were, at least they never made me feel like my existence was an insult. That really affirmed my feelings toward abortion - that every child should be wanted by their parents, no one should be forced into parenting when they don't want to or aren't fit.

    While this video is fantastically done and all the arguments are valid, make sense, and perfectly explain why abortions are important and can be good depending on circumstance... I don't think "pro-life"-ers would 1, sit through the whole video to get to your final point, or 2, have enough brain cells to understand the point anyways.
    I've seen a ton of great arguments of why abortions should be allowed (while fetuses get rights, no one else gets the right to use someone else's body to live, or things like "being pro-choice doesn't mean you personally have to get an abortion, it means it's avalible to those who want or need one"), I've never heard this argument! It breaks it down really well, and I'd like to see someone try to argue against it with valid points. (It would be hard, because this was done so well)

    This is a terrible video for pro abortion. Euthanasia, suicide and capital punishment have nothing to do with the actual abortion. Seems your video shouldn't have had abortion in the title, but rather just "when is it ok to kill" You didn't take so many factors into consideration. Just seems like rambling word vomit and jumping around the actual subject of abortion. I'm not strongly on either side of the debate. I think there's obviously circumstances which would make it ok to have an abortion. I myself have had 2 abortions, which were healthy pregnancies, when I was younger which I sadly ended up regretting massively 10 years later, it suddenly hit me I'd literally killed my child. It really effected me badly giving me really bad depression and just wishing I could turn back time. I realise everyone isn't effected in this way. In societies where it's easy to prevent an unwanted pregnancy I think we should be focused more on how making it easier for people to stop unwanted pregnancy. Making contraception more accessible E.g no prescription for the pill needed, Free plan b, ect.
