    Interesting. One might wonder at the why of endless internal fighting? But if you recall the story of Romulus and Remus, the in fighting starts to make sense, well a little sense, perhaps. A tradition, from their previous laws and so on. A Roman royal family that had two brothers sometimes seen one brother kill the other brother for the sake of the throne. Which was legal, from their particular times and point of view. One might also observe that the various honchos often treated the realms that they ruled as a parcel of personal property. A collective point of view, the echos of which, were on display with the run-up to WWI. The generalized notion of serfs and so on and the notion of complimentary vassals --- Russia has been in the news recently, and not in a complementary way, I've read that serfdom still existed up until their revolution, making Imperial Russia one of the most recent echos of the Roman Empire? Some might take exception to this explanation, but that's okay.

    subbed, question thou, why did the western emperors move the capital to mediolanium (milan)? the roman sente put huge emphasis on the pomerium of rome and the religious festivals and events conducted by the emperor we critical to the daily running of things, all this was historically done in rome, not the other cities.

    • @thucydideschannel
      @thucydideschannel  Před 2 lety +4

      It was closer to the vulnerable province regions, particularly the Rhine and Danube frontiers, which came under increasing attack in the later periods of western Rome. The city of Rome was too far down the Italian peninsula to be a practical capital for a military emperor who needed to quickly respond to threats beyond the borders.

    In the end of the forth century the Roman Empire in the West was empire that on the outside was still the Goliath of the Europe and the Mediterranean sea, but in the inside the constant civil war since the death of Constantine , the change in climate which made the country less productibe and the domination of the army and palace bureaucrates over everything and the negleting of public works, culture made it as we say in Greece a giant with feet made out of clay.
    It was the perfect storm of organised ''barbarians''(now if he has a high rank the roman army, speaks fluently latin and has years in the service of the state, the term of barbarian is up for debate from my point of view) , palace intrigue and military ambition that ended the roman empire. Ernest Hemingway once said : It was his view for the Fall of the West and it fits it like a glove.

      States can bounce back all the time. The civil wars of Caesar and Augustus totally devastated the entire Mediterranean. Wars happen, and nations recover from them quickly most of the time.
      The west was hardly in dire straits in 395. It was a monarchy, so as long as there is strong leadership and good governance, the state will do well.
