This depresses me. I don’t know why. I suppose it’s just my love for Rome at its peak.
Arguably the worst Roman Emperor, for his inactivity throughout his reign and his legacy, the eradication of imperial power itself.
Idk commudus was pretty bad.
Libius Severus was a worse puppet than honorius
@Krusis A kid that reigned 30 years.
There are only a few emperors who rival Honorius in incompetence
Commodus was pretty bad but atleast the empire could easily bounce back from him. With Honorius however, his incompetence and sheer stupidity lead directly to the fall of the western empire.
historians: commodus is the worst roman emperor ever.
honorius: am i a joke for you?
Valentinian the 3rd: Amateurs...

Watching your videos gives me the same feeling as watching Historia Civilis is videos for the first time. And I love your channel for that. Also good idea of Incorporating hoi4 music into the videos. Makes for a good soundtrack.
I’d argue this is better than historia civilis after the mark antony video he just doesn’t make ancient Roman videos anymore
This video just popped up in my recommended. So glad I found your channel.
If Arcadian was a real man, he would have taken control of the whole empire as his father, and Kept it. As honorius wouldn't have been able to fight
They were both usless
@@donnytrumptastic7815 yes, But Arcadius did more than honorius. Stilhico was the last real hope of rome tbh
@@natejones963 Majorian could have done something but he was murdered for being a good emperor
@@natejones963correction: Arcadius’ wife did more than Honorius, but Arcadius himself died halfway through Honorius’ reign and honestly half the worst of what was to come was from Honorius’ second half of rule, after Arcadius had already died.
Just discovered your channel in looking for content around Honorius. I really enjoy your style and approach! Subbed.
The quality of this channel is extremely good. I have subscribed. Keep it up
Amazing video. Can't wait till the battle of the catalaunian plains. Keep it up!
I just discovered your channel. already watched everything. keep it up bro
Interesting. One might wonder at the why of endless internal fighting? But if you recall the story of Romulus and Remus, the in fighting starts to make sense, well a little sense, perhaps. A tradition, from their previous laws and so on. A Roman royal family that had two brothers sometimes seen one brother kill the other brother for the sake of the throne. Which was legal, from their particular times and point of view. One might also observe that the various honchos often treated the realms that they ruled as a parcel of personal property. A collective point of view, the echos of which, were on display with the run-up to WWI. The generalized notion of serfs and so on and the notion of complimentary vassals --- Russia has been in the news recently, and not in a complementary way, I've read that serfdom still existed up until their revolution, making Imperial Russia one of the most recent echos of the Roman Empire? Some might take exception to this explanation, but that's okay.

hey, Thucydides can you explain to me the whole thing between galla and honorius?, was he a creep or just affectionate? and is it just a legend (like the rome chicken) or something we know happened
All good in all but one question still lingers unanswered
What ever became of the chicken named Roma?
Roma is immortal

28 years. 2 8 YEARS.
This human shaped piece of furniture reigned for as long as the entire Flavian Dynasty. I don't understand how he managed to do that without getting assassinated for his incompetence.
hey, I really like the map your using to illustrate the battles and conquests, do you mind telling me where you got it from and what program your using to animate it all.
much appreciated
and keep up the good work !
As ironic as the name is, he's the most hated emperor to exist in rome. Even Commodus was slightly better.
subbed, question thou, why did the western emperors move the capital to mediolanium (milan)? the roman sente put huge emphasis on the pomerium of rome and the religious festivals and events conducted by the emperor we critical to the daily running of things, all this was historically done in rome, not the other cities.
It was closer to the vulnerable province regions, particularly the Rhine and Danube frontiers, which came under increasing attack in the later periods of western Rome. The city of Rome was too far down the Italian peninsula to be a practical capital for a military emperor who needed to quickly respond to threats beyond the borders.
@@thucydideschannel thanks, honestly the more i learn about the late romans, it strikes me more and more how much they seemed to depart from the idea of a roman only a few centuries before, it does make me wonder how young late romans would have thought about people like caeser and scipio etc, i would love to see a video about how the roman spirit changed so fundamentally.
This is so depressing. 😭
What do you plan to post after the western emperors series ends?
I’m gonna make specific videos on some of Rome’s barbarian enemies
@@thucydideschannel How about a series about some of Rome's Eastern client states (Armenia, Commagene, etc)?
Did Alaric actually breach the walls of Rome though? Thought he got in by way of some treachery, no?
So is valentinian III next? How about the wave of puppet emperors afterwards?
next video is about Aetius
Flavius Aetius - one of the greatest roman heroes who tried to stop the huns from invading into the western roman empire, later he was betrayed by gothic king Alaric,Aetius, later he got killed by emperor Valentinian III,surprisingly his reign was quite long. Although he was great! ❤💙
In the end of the forth century the Roman Empire in the West was empire that on the outside was still the Goliath of the Europe and the Mediterranean sea, but in the inside the constant civil war since the death of Constantine , the change in climate which made the country less productibe and the domination of the army and palace bureaucrates over everything and the negleting of public works, culture made it as we say in Greece a giant with feet made out of clay.
It was the perfect storm of organised ''barbarians''(now if he has a high rank the roman army, speaks fluently latin and has years in the service of the state, the term of barbarian is up for debate from my point of view) , palace intrigue and military ambition that ended the roman empire. Ernest Hemingway once said : It was his view for the Fall of the West and it fits it like a glove.
I don't like calling them barbarians either, even those who didn't serve the empire. I'm gonna do a bunch of videos on the leaders of the so-called barbarians.
States can bounce back all the time. The civil wars of Caesar and Augustus totally devastated the entire Mediterranean. Wars happen, and nations recover from them quickly most of the time.
The west was hardly in dire straits in 395. It was a monarchy, so as long as there is strong leadership and good governance, the state will do well.
The James Buchanan of Emperors.
what about the suebic kingdom in Gallaecia? it was Honorius who signed the foedus with them

Quintilius: useless because he was useless.
I feel sad for him tbh
Lets put this in perspective. The eastern part of the roman empire army was week..
Was Honorius poisoned? 38 is awful young to die.
Well its the 5th Century people can just catch a cold and die. Also the Theodosian Dynasty had in general bad health just look at their busts.

Honorious was not as evil as Commodus, Caligula, Caracalla and Nero. But he was one of the most incompetent and lazy rulers. This is why he was one of the worst.
@@Endgame707 Nope. Source?
Cursed be his name.

Honor-ius, but he wasn't honorable😂
I do not believe he was as bad as his nephew, much of his mistakes can be attributed to his incompetence and the false advice he was given.A lot of blame falls on Stilicho, who was his guardian, since Honorius was a child. In the end,Honorius did what he could ,but that wasn't enough.Kudos to him though for focusing on the barbarian threats, rather than on Constantine and for picking Constantius III as his co-emperor.
You cant get much WORSE than Honorius - who let the Western Empire completely IMPLODE and did absolutely nothing but show concern for his chicken when Rome was brutally sacked in 410.
