Historia Civilis wishes he had an upload schedule this consistent👍
Dude this channel is definitely a Historia civils type of channel 😂
The only one who could rival Honorius in title for worst emperor was Valentinian the III
He wasn’t as useless as Honorius. Valentinian III was actually the reason why no German tribe entered Italy with an army. The Vandals and their king Gaiseric was in good diplomacy with Valentinian. Valentinian himself was not good and he did murder Aetius himself. But he did prove that he could do a little bit better than his Uncle Honorius.
Commodus is, in my opinion, the worst but they both suck
There's also Phocas and Alexios IV
@@ZephLodwick alexios iii was worse than alexios iv. also cant forget andronikos i
In my opinion it goes like this, honorius, valentinian iii, Caligula, commodus.
Stilicho, Aetius and Maiorian, the men who almost single handedly held the state together.
This is so depressing to watch, to see it all crashing down after it had endured so much.
Valentinian III was also the Great Grandson of Valentinian I so he kinda revived that Dynasty somewhat
Your videos are amazing. you are a rising star of CZcams. Your upload schedule is great af
SO PROFESSIONAL
Here we see all the issues of Rome come together, generals taking the shots, constant civil wars, ""Barbarians"" creating kingdoms of theirs and the roman army be depanded of the good relationships with the previously mensioned kingdoms. The Western Empire under Valentian III was a state on his last legs.
But to be honest the state brought it to itself , giving all the importance to general and they fought like vultures over a dying animal for titles and fame .But nothing was given for the conditions of living of the average citizen ,who had high taxes and lacked of security so rebellion became common as you show in Spain , and the same was in Brittany (not Brittain) also.
As for the ""Barbarians"" they used this opportunity to enlange their territories and take privileges of the Empire and when the Empire failed to give they raided and took land. The result was great for them, made no difference to the average resident and devastating the Empire.
When it comes to Aetius I have mixed feelings. He was part of the general who have part of the blame, but after he becme Magister Militum he did his best to keep the Empire alive and as I see defeated Attila. Regardless after his death and the sack of 455 the end was almost certain it was matter of when and how.
He did defeat Attila dont let anyone tell you otherwise.
Another great video. Cant wait to see the next!
Great production 👍
Love your videos bro.. I think I've watched damn near all of them at this point 😂
The letters of cassiodorus indicate that at least relatively contemporaneously 50 years later it was perceived as a Visigothic victory against the Huns. Highly convincing.
Cassiodorus worked with the Gothic court and helped write Gothic histories.
@@thucydideschannel yeah but from memory it was just a letter from Theodoric warning them not to confront Clovis. Still within living memory at the time of writing.
You really should have mentioned Pope Leo the Great. While Valentinian fled, Leo led a delegation to northern Italy to meet with Attila. Even if you don't agree with the interpretation of the meeting as depicted in art above Leo's tomb in St. Peter's Basilica, you have to admit that Attila decided to spare Rome afterward.
Say what you will about Commodus, but at least the empire wasn't hemorrhaging when he was in charge
This channel is awesome
No mention of Pope Leo?
How do you animate the moving armies?
this is quite good. So after majorian which I assume is next, how will the last few puppet emperors be handled
I'm making two more videos to cover the west: one for the brief career of Majorian, and then a final video called Imperial Collapse. I'll probably just use that video as an opportunity to talk about the economic, social, and political ramifications of the fall of the west, while mentioning which useless people happen to sit on the throne.
@@thucydideschannel dont talk about my main man Olybrius like that
QUEEN
15.16 What happened to Eudoxia afterwards?
She lived in Carthage with the Vandals for a few years before the eastern emperor Leo paid for her return to Constantinople.
@@thucydideschannel Thanks!
God damn it Romans stop killing each other. General saves the day later killed by the emperor.
One of the big reasons why Western Rome fell. Politicians and senators were corrupt. The empire was unorganized.
The reason they did that is because in the past it would be General saves the day later General rebels and usurps the emperor. As incompetent as Honorious and Valentinian III were you can understand why they did the things they did. We know in hindsight that Aetius and Stilicho never rebelled but at the time there would be nothing these emperors could do from stopping it. Even Stilicho and Aetius weren’t solely noble. The only reason neither one rebelled is because they essentially were the emperor and both wielded power with impunity. The next step would be killing the emperor yourself and taking the purple but that would be pointless because they already wielded the power. Not to mention it would cause unneeded stability in an already weakening empire.
you go joe
I though Atilla withdrew from Rome after meeting with the Pope?
Be the way it goes, the Roman Empire was very different. The situations described seem like coming from the Middle Ages. So did the Middle Ages began at 576? For me it'll always be when Theodhosius died.
Just an example how larger territory doesn't mean a stronger country. During most of the republic era, Rome was significantly smaller but managed to hold together better.
👍👍👍
Oh yes
great video!
sorry about being the worst emperor btw
Honorius was the worst acutally, you were bottom 4 imo.
