Of course, 'Abendland' means 'West' because the West is where the Sun sets but these are still slightly different concepts. 'The West' seems to refer to industrialized countries with representative democracy and market economy whereas 'Abendland' ('Occident') refers more to cultural aspects and traditions such as Christian religion, at least as I understand it. I'd refer to medieval and early modern France as part of the Occident but not so much as a Western country in the modem sense.
