- Prop Modeler, Craig Narramore, Set Decorator, Claire Nia Richards, and more highlight the lengthy and detailed process behind developing the model of Old Valyria. Check out the full behind-the-scenes episode of docuseries The House That Dragons Built on HBO Max to learn more about how the Red Keep evolves as Alicent becomes more influential in the castle, blocking the banquet scene, and more.
The greatest crime of the series is not having an episode where Viserys played with this model with his grandchildren and used the figurines to have mini battles
All that hard work for for 1 minute screen 😂💀
Exactly a true tragedy.
Could had played with Halaena's bugs. Flying ones as dragons, land ones as fire wryms.
@@mustafafh4402 that's called being meticulous
@@TheUrobolos exactly
It's not just a cool set piece, it gives us insight into Viserys as a character as well. Compare this to Robert who enjoyed hunting in solitude away from everyone, Joffrey loved torturing people, Cersei drinking wine and perpetually scheming. Viserys was a builder, and a lover of history, which only plays more into the tragedy that will be The Dance. Another note is when someone came to talk to him while he was working on his model, he never dismissed them, which means in accordance with his hobby he always wanted to be available for his family or for his councilors to speak with him, unlike say Robert who in his hobby of hunting wanted complete solitude in an effort to avoid court.
Image by the end of the dance it's destroyed I'd low key cry
The reason we see Robert hunting in relative solitude in S1 of GoT is entirely due to budget and is one of GRRM's favorite pet peeves to harp on about in the show. As we see in the hunt in HotD, any king would have taken most key members of court with him for a hunt. Granted, it is certainly true Robert cared more for hunting, fighting, and whoring than ruling.
@@thatoneblackdude3333 alicent is chucking that shit out asap that’s probably why they’re doing this clip before Sunday. We probably won’t be seeing it again once she takes over
@@possiblymaybe6711 or maybe argon thinking that's the reason his dad neglected him so he destroys it out of spite.
@@thatoneblackdude3333 maybe, but viserys was never the kind of guy to turn people away if he was working on it. Like Robert boratheons hobby was hunting alone and he wouldn’t allow interruptions but viserys loved interruptions. I really don’t think he neglected his kids I think they neglected him bc of their mothers controlling hand and paranoia. Also he was so sick by the time they were teens he couldn’t go to them as often so it would be on them to bond with him. It’s sad really. Rhaenyra was his favorite bc she was good to him and adored him. His sons were under alicents thumb they are her children more than they’re his
The Old Valyria model worked so well as a visual representation of Visery’s character. Not just to represent his introspection and mild character, but to show his devotion and obsession to his Valyrian blood and the prophecy it holds. And it was a heartbreaking sight in the later episodes to see his city covered in cobwebs. A city in ruin, just like his best efforts to hold house Targaryen together in peace.
The model is one of my favourite aspects of Viserys; he's a capable project manager, but overwhelmed as king.
Overwhelmed as a patriarch I think. As a King, not so much. But, since we’re talking about a dynastic ruler, there’s a lot of overlap I guess.
It's very similar to Louis the somethingth of France before the Revolution, man just wanted to make clocks and not be king
Showing that management, government and politics have common things, but they arent the same
@@eds1942 as a King, at some point he allowed house velaryon to align itself with 4 of the 5 dragonriders in Westeros. The primordial role of a King is to hold the supreme power and one of it's vassals was stronger than the crown.
@@jmra99 To be fair, the Velaryons were married in with the Targaryens and backed his chosen heir to the throne. In theory he had the air superiority of house Targaryen and the sea superiority of the Velaryon fleet. He could raise an army to repel any attempts on Westeros. The only problem is he fractured his house by alienating his brother, and fathering challengers to his chosen heir (neither Aegon or Aemond were prepared to take over the throne or noble enough to handle the responsibility). There was no threat from the outside that could challenge Targaryen rule from the outside, but created deep fractures from the inside.
It would've been amazing if Viserys told more lore about Valyria while he was still alive.
Yeah, he mentioned a few things to Alicent, but it feels like he had a ton more knowledge than that.
They probably didn't want to contradict GRRM too much in case he decided to expand on that lore in the books
I think it's actually quite good that they don't.
Alicent isn't really interested, and Viserys is isolated and alone for the majority of the season. With no one to talk to about it.
We don't hear the history of Valyria, dragons, and blood magic, because no one really paid it attention. A major theme of the show.
It could work as a flashback in the later seasons perhaps, to tie into the dance of the dragons; who knows. Many ways to be creative with it.
Special features. They did it with Game of Thrones. Have him narrate the Valyria ones.
@@LostAurusStudios that is a great idea. And it would be wonderful to hear his healthy version of his voice of the actor. Not the one between wheezes and blinks in his decrepit old age!
Was a pleasure to work on this model! I was one of the makers and painter for the model and spent about 5 months working on it!
thanks man, it looks great
Imagine if he had died like in the books, playing with his grandchildren and telling stories of old Valyria, add the Valyria model in the scene and it would have been perfectly heartbreaking
Wasn't that how Aegon the conqueror died?
He died with an orange in his mouth, playing with his grandson
The amount of work that goes behind the scenes is astounding. Great job, everyone!
Cringe Af!
And this is the reason why I don't shit on the last season of GoT. Yeah, the writing sucked but the acting, the costumes, set design, score, fighting choreography, etc. were all on point.
My thoughts exactly.
As someone who builds scale models I can totally relate to King Viserys having the same hobby. Its so rewarding and like him I think we would have the same feeling of being a kid again and just being awestruck with our own creation.
I'm making a miniature Casterly Rock/Lanisport with polymer clay and glass and you just described how I feel about seeing my vision come to life
@@carlosg2541 have you gotten far enough to share some progress? Because I, and probably a lot more would be interested to see.
@@noxtrin1878 yes I am I'd say 75% finished! Have an instagram so I can share some pictures?
@@carlosg2541 sure I think that its just noah_nyberg, and in the pfp I look completely wasted
While only in computer form, not a 3D model #Shadiversity did a book-accurate/ historically authentic version of Winterfell- holy hell does it look epic!
And recently #Jazza did a book-accurate section of the Wall...
I love that Viserys was a bit of a geek and loved his little models and reading ancient books. Makes a change from all the other volatile rulers we've seen.
The effort and dedication on even the smallest detail is just insane...that dragon detail on the model was epic
As an architect, I was really impressed the first time I saw that model of Valyria, but a couple of episodes, It went BIG, oh my god, I am only capable of doing a modern model not quite that size by first using Revit and doing a 3D model, and then I can guide myself doing it, I use laser printing, to have more clean cuts, but this is a work worth thousands of dollars.
its ok HBO has all the dragon money in the world. Remember you are talking about 3D printing, not yet including the touch ups, texturing, finishing, all done by skilled hands!
To be fair it is not a 2-3 week client presentation model, the man has been working on it for decades supposedly
Viserys dreaded the politics and just wanted to build his Lego Death Star. Relatable.
It's amazing how you much work and detail oriented these people are. Even the background props tell a story in HOTD/GOT. Absolutely Brilliant!!
Valyria was a beautiful place, I've seen it with my own eyes. You guys really missed out.
starbucks cup told of the changes to come😔
If only he lived for 20 more years he could have made dice and figures and made his own wargame
A King of Games if you will.
@@ph89787 King of the minis, terrian and dice. Lord of RNG and Game master of the realm.
kudos to the prop makers and designers, it looks fantastic
Petition for an Old Valyria spin-off series 👏🏻
At least an animated one like blood of zeus from netflix.
Such mythical civilizations are better as lorebuilding flavor. "Discovery" their mystery would ruin their otherworldy aura i think
@@TheUrobolos a very interesting perspective. That's why we love History and Lore.
I think they made this model with the intention of doing so. It's not just an easter egg. I'm pretty sure, that a spin off series is coming, animated or not.
But it will get a Disney ending
It’s Amazing that King Viserys did this and thanks for the BTS look at it. Yes, the cobwebs are a sad touch
rest in lego heaven dragon grandpa
I'm going to be so heartbroken if it gets destroyed by accident or intentionally by his descendants. it makes me incredibly sad when people don't respect someone's efforts, especially something that's been so long in making as this model. he spent all of his life on it
Awwww, you made me sad just thinking about it! 😢
I feel like we’ll definitely see it get destroyed at some point in the show.
I also think someone will deliberatly destroy it just for additional drama
Robert Baratheon ordered everything related to the Targaryens to be completely destroyed when he took the Iron Throne, so yeah... bad news.
@@octaviablackthorn9 yes, it's going to be a symbol of a downfall of Targaryens, but still it makes me sad
please tell me this amazing model will be kept in some kind of GoT museum or something. would love to come see it in person 😭😭
In the latest episode, they gave a close up shot where we can see spider webs on this model, signifying how the model isn't taken care/ worked upon anymore since now Viserys is sick and old.
I've noticed that too. HBO is master of detail, we cannot say the same about Amazon... Bruh, this ammount of money yet shit series
The attention to detail in this show is just amazing!!. This show is amazing 👏
Mildly worried how they’ve uploaded a video exploring this model after the episode in which the only character who cares about the model existing in one piece dies…
as miniature enthusiast, this is really amazing to look at every time
and it sort of made its way into memes as in the early episodes, people joke about viserys marrying the woman who like his dioramas
A wonderfully built model, I’d love to see it in the museum in Belfast some day. Imagine if there was a modern city that was built like Valyria today. The peoples of ancient world knew how to build beauty. Christopher Wren was probably the last great architect with such a vision.
props to them for including the 'pink dread' at 3:41 😂
Hahahahah great spot
I must be blind, but i just can't spot it.
@@Catherine_Yong right side of the screen. A little pig with giant wings on a column, near the spiked walls of that giant gate
@@Catherine_Yong keep your eyes to the right side of the video, should be easier to spot ^^
The hardwork of these people behind the scene is just amazing! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I was hesitant at first but after the 3rd episode I felt like the magic was back. Feels good talking about different theories with friends on Monday morning again
With finished source material and GRRM back working on the show (he left season 4 of GOTs) it was a pretty safe bet it was going to be great
I hope eventually the studio tour grows to have a House of the Dragon section as well with this in it!
I just have great respect for the showrunner and the set designs. They really thought out every little detail that last for swleconds on screen to create a world that feels live in.
I wish George had said something about it... it's so so epic... maybe one day we'll get a show during that era
I doubt it. GGRM has said he likes keeping the mystery of Old Valerya
@@ben1ben2ben1 Tolkien also said he hates allegories but that didn't stop the showmakers
I think the model is a great extension of Viserises character and the world at large. I was surprised at how invested i was becoming in this model as it slowly grew over the duration of the season. It was a good indication of the time jumps between episodes and in the end when it has clearly been untouched for years its heartbreaking
You know some fan is going to go all-out and make this at home.
Fun fact: there is a small "Pink Dread" statue somewhere in the model of Old Valyeria
funny to think that Alicent probably went and told him what the other boys had done to Aemond, her eventually leaving his room and Viserys having a little chuckle to himself while drawing up a little sketch of the Pink Dread for the stonemasons to make one 😂
If Viserys was a modern man, he would be into miniature painting and model making. he’s a creator at heart
This is amazing all the work done by everyone to bring life to HOTD, brilliantly and masterfully created! Bravo to you all.
Viserys just wanted to play with his LEGOS and ya’ll stressed him out
Jokes on you guys, now you have no choice but to produce the show that takes place in Valyria since you have it built 😎
I knew it looked bigger as the episodes went on!! But that's so freakin cool to have it confirmed. I thought I was just remembering it wrong. Great job with this, it's truly amazing.
Props to the maker ,and designer old valyria look fantastic👏🏽.
i find it funny how the moment viserys the peaceful died, the realm was plunged into war and chaos lmao. a kind and good king he was, building city models and pursuing peace as his priority
I get the feeling that Viserys would be big into Warhammer Fantasy and the LOTR miniatures if he lived in our world.
The detail and love and care that goes into this show 🥺🥺🥺😭😭😭makes me wee heart happy
I wonder what will become of this model. Will Aegon the Older destroy it? Look at it and be like "Kinda nice"?
It is just incredible what this show does.
If Aegon has it destroyed his hateability will go through the roof.
Hopefully Alicent won't let him...
i hope the maesters move it into the citadel hahaha, it would be an amazing model to have on display and great for the history nerds. sadly that’s a low chance because they’re so anti magic
@@morighani
I've always wondered where they got their supply of Valyrian steel & glass candles - I know only 1:100/ 1:1000 maesters does get the Valyrian link (& it was more about emphasising how it {magic} *doesn't* exist anymore), but- _where_ did they get it?
The maesters were supposed to wear their chains all the time- did that rule end with their death? Were they reclaimed by the Citadel? What happened if the maester was cremated (like Maester Aemon)? I know Valyrian steel would probably resist melting in a regular fire, but it leaves a ton of questions- about how the Citadel handles stuff.
Where were maesters buried/ interred- with the Citadel, where they began their new life? With the house they served? Were they returned to their birth-house? What if they were born a peasant?
Edit: word
The model and Viserys progress on it can also be seen as a symbol for the upcoming downfall of House Targaryen. Let me explain why: The old Valyria was the mightiest city in the world at its peak, but then came the doom, which destroyed everything except for the Velaryons and the Targaryens. Both families managed to escape and rebuild their power in Westeros. At the time Jaehaerys died and the crown came into the hands of Viserys they were at the peak of their power. Viserys decision to name Rhaenyra his heir although he had a son later on layed the ground for the conflict that ended the era of dragons. The king building this symbol of doom while forcing his family into a war against each other is more than sarcastic, it's like a cruel joke.
Some spider is definitely living large in that Old Valyria model.
Imagine a tv show with the budget of The Rings of Power BUT for Old Valyria.
Never going to happen. GRRM has said many times he wants to keep Old Valyria a mystery
@@ben1ben2ben1 I thought he said he wanted to keep the doom a mystery
This helped make Viserys endearing to people who enjoy Warhammer 40k and other similar hobbies.
I really hope we get a series about the Valyrian Freehold
The 3d files for this thing need to be released it would be so cool
This model Viserys built of Old Valyria tells me he likely also knew about, not just the structure of its society, but the names of the other dragon lord Houses and the dynamics between the families and maybe even within them.
So much knowledge about Old Valyria lost forever. 😭
I'd love for them to share the 3D-Files of the model, so one could 3D-print parts of it at home!
Paddy deserves an Emmy!!
Well done to the guys and girls who put their effort into that model, as someone who likes models and figures i enjoyed seeing it each time it was on screen and trying to notice what had changed since previous episodes
Hope we get a series on the history of Valeria because there is alot of story that need to be told.
I doubt it. GRRM has said many times he wants to keep Valeria a mystery
This will be me and my lego collection sets once I'm old and have enough space in my house. Seriously tho, the production and design team did an amazing job with creating that incredible scale model of Old Valyria!
very very cool. I can appreciate all the time and effort put into that.
So amazing! The things we're able to do with technology these days. It really is a remarkable piece of architecture in and of itself.
I hope that they will sell posters and mini models of this.
What do I need to do?
amazing. 3d printing is a game changer
Did someone give Lego a call to make this happen IRL.
This model better end up in a museum or traveling exhibit.
I want to know where this extraordinary peice goes after the show is finished!
I like to believe eddard is still working on it in honor of viserys
Amazing job
Amazing set
Is this the most detailed depiction of Valyria that we've ever seen?
HBO could sell little dragon models made out of that stone, they'd do well
GOT Creators need to open a museum when all of this is said and done, I'd definitely go!
there's the GoT studio tour in Belfast, Ireland...hopefully it will have a house of the dragon section in time
I cannot wait until the have this on display at an exhibition and actually get to see it in person
damn so much hard work i love this show so much
What is amazing is how the model could be used to create a show on Old Valyria some time before the Doom.
We really, really need a series about the Others, Old Gods, Starks, Children of the North, and everything North of the Wall in general! Please, HBO, make it happen!
@malicious intent Jon Snow is Mary Sue at this point, and a useless character in the show to boot. Arya Stark did his job for him. I really want something more than a show about him.
The problem with that idea is that GRRM hasn’t written much about that, and we saw what happened when it’s left up to tv writers with no material to go on…
@@westerosandchill7644 I would presume that GRRM would be heavily involved, like he is with HOTD, and HBO would not tolerate any more fiascoes from showrunners like D&D. I really hope we do get shows about the history of the North, considering that GRRM is never going to finish his series, not at the current rate at least.
The North has always been the most boring part of GOTs
@@ben1ben2ben1 Not in the least if you've read the books. The North is THE key piece in the ASOIAF jigsaw, and way more intriguing and interesting than the Targs and their dragons.
this little thing that i love it!
I love it how the architecture is a cross between Rome and Dragonstone
0.44- OH Paddy! I love the way he just said it because I wonder how many of us were thinking that exact thing from the very beginning! Gonna miss him.
Amazing!
They're gonna smash it to bits in the next episode, aren't they? That would be quite sad.
All everyone had to do was leave Viserys alone and let him play with his Legos.
The king of peace just wanted his family to be happy drink wine and build his train set
People say automation will kill art, well here is an amazing example that automation is just another tool in the artist's toolset, it enables smaller teams to build greater things than they could have otherwise done
I’m an architect and very interested in the Valyrian parte of the Ice and Fire lore. So I enjoyed every second this model was on screen. I have to say how I liked that they used Dragonstone style on the model, very coherent
If they ever do a GOT or HOTD official museum they better have this and a town map if course
We will miss you Viserys
3:37 these shots are sooooo god damn beautiful
Imagine a show during that era... 😍
They are just crazy since game of thrones era....I will never ever forget their hardworks
i hope one day they let us the fans get a chance to see this model. it is amazing and beautiful. i hope we do get an old valyria tv show. how the dragons conquer the world at the time. what were their plans after taking over the essos.
They already have the base. Now make us the whole SHOW of the Rise and Doom of Old Valyria.
We need a bts with Viserys just playing with his Legos for 60 minutes
The 'Pink Dread' at 3:40 lol
If Viserys wasn’t already cool enough, he was the first Westerosi King to 3D print.
Gonna need them stl's - thanks
Do you have a model of Paddy Considine's future Emmy award?
Brilliant
They should made this into a full size product
I'll definitely buy it
As separate mods, like those build-a-castle/ doll-house sets, with booklets with info of the period, & decorating ideas...?
I enjoyed the old manor, & doll-house I made, like that...
Viserys may not have been a great King but he was a capable scholar and builder, this really gave a more complex view of his character. Old Valyria seems to have been inspired by Constantinople at its height really reinforcing the Ancient Rome analogy.
his little Lego Set!
@ 0:30 Viserys was a dragonrider who rode Balerion until the dragon died of old age during the reign of Jaehaerys I. Viserys never bonded with another dragon after Balerion's death.
