- For the first time I'm going to be streaming my Sunday evening Bible study from home. Jesus' teaching in this passage, Mark 9:33-42, is meant to stop abuses in leadership, unnecessary division and competitive self-seeking in Christians. These issues are so relevant to us today that we need to take Jesus' words to heart. It may require that we change some things about ourselves or our ministries. Subscribe and make sure to click the bell icon if you want notifications when I go live. Keep your eyes on Jesus.
This is part 32 in the ongoing series through the Gospel of Mark. You can catch the whole series here (and perhaps now is a good time to start a series!) • The Gospel of Mark Ser...
If you want to support this ministry please click here. But, if you are deciding between helping my ministry and another one which may be at great financial risk during this crisis I ask that you support the other ministry as I am not currently at risk of shutting down like they might be. Thank you. biblethinker.org/index.php/do...
this is why the bible is the truth ...no other historical book showcases the highs and lows of people/nation . GOD is the truth and HIS Holiness is what we need .
Great video Mark! This Mike series is great :^)
LOL Great video MIKE, this MARK series is great :-)
This made me laugh more than it should of 😂
Hahahaha
😂 so funny
Judah Matthews 😂
I attended a large church where we served in the kitchen. It was obvious that we were 2nd class servants compared to worship team or preaching team. We served despite leadership because we believed in the mission of that church

This is so good! It’s so biblical! Half way through I have so much conviction and desire to be more like Christ!
Thanks Mark.
Great Bible study Mark.
I'm slow to admit this (because I don't want every Christian in cyberspace to jump down my throat) but I have been a member/attender of a WOF Church from September 1984 until the present. Ever since the pandemic, changing Churches has been in the back of my mind.
I am currently in this the cult of World mission Society. I just watched you videos concerning the mother and AhnSahngHong, even thou there are some things about AhnSahnghong I still agree, your videos did reach me. So thank you and God bless you.
How are you doing now? I’m praying for you!!
AGSC where are you at now?? Would love to hear what God has been showing you since then and how your life has changed?
👍🏽 Being called Mark instead of Mike, implies that you have new viewers. It’s a good thing! Love your teachings, thank you so much. Have really taught me to view things differently and to be convicted, humbled, & to grow in Christ in a “normal” & balanced way💜✝️
I like it so much better when you talk to us directly via screen.
Thank you for doing it.
Be blessed, Pastor Mike.
A very good morning from Ireland.
As I step out in faith I will revisit this video as a reminder...
This Mark series has been a blessing on my life, thank you!
I need prayer. I want the Lord to guide me in this. I want God's perfect will. I am in the "latter" part of my life and I don't want to make a lot of serious mistakes at this time. Thanks...
A Northern Irish Christian here. John lennox talks about titles in his book determined to believe. Great sermon thank you and God bless
Thanks Mike for sharing the gospel with simplicity, may the Lord Jesus continue to bless you to share His word with all boldness and wisdom. Stay blessed
Praise God. Thank you.
I love the questions that were asked at the end they helped me. Thank you Jesus 💕 Thank you brothers and sisters.
I have been checking out a local Baptist Church (mainly online) for the last couple of months. I like the exegetical way the Pastor teaches the Bible. I visited there a few weeks ago
(The Church is local) They are really friendly. They emphasize evangelism, which I like. I told the Pastor the name of the Church I go to now. He heard of the Church, but he didn't judge me.
Thank you for teaching us tonight.
Watching Monday morning.
Thank you for this message.
Thank you for streaming this Mark series even still. I really appreciate your teaching and I am glad you are holed up well for now. May God bless you and your ministry even in this time. May your house be a shelter from viruses of all sorts and may you even find relief from your allergies.
God bless you Mike
Hey mike I’m really enjoying your videos I recently had a stroke and I’d really appreciate your prayers
Excellent study and very knowledgeable answers Well done oh humble servant 🤓
I love this.
Ok thanks Mark
Allergies are a curse right now! I’m right there with you.
Outstanding point about elevating those that are seen as lesser. I’ve never heard someone make that argument.
Thank you for teaching this!
Thanks for this! I needed a check and a boost in the right direction!
Mike you are an inspiration! You have a lot of knowledge! I pray God continues blessing you! In Jesus name. I just started my own CZcams channel...
What an interesting and prescient topic of discussion! A few weeks back I commented in reference to the "corporate" mentality that seems pervasive in American churches. Prayerfully these discussions will bring greater biblical unity among Christ followers.
That's hilarious! I get called Mike all the time but my name is Mark.
What a great message. Thanks Mike!
" They love titles" I have a degree in religious studies but did not go to seminary. I taught sunday school for years and then was asked to " fill in" for the youth pastor. I ended up filling in for 4 years. The senior pastor called me one day and was upset that nobody called me " Pastor" I told the Pastor I am not a pastor and I am not offended. The church was a foreign language. Based church and the pastor told me there is an honorific term in their culture meaning pastor in training that people should call me and brought me up before the congregation to let them know they MUST use this term. My youth group kids have known me since Sunday school and have called me Mr Jones since they've known me. I told them to just keep calling me Mr Jones,....that did not go over well lol. This type of stuff and some other things that were being done ( or not done) by leadership played into my decision to resign and change churches. I just wanted to teach God's word and give the kids some apologetic training. Sorry for the long post, this obviously still weighing on my heart. Thanks " Mark" for this series, I have been really enjoying it. Stay safe and healthy
18:00 the humble boast, very good teaching mark..
Boomer. Hmmm, "I are one." :-). Thanks, MIKE, for bringing such insight to these passages.
To be next to Jesus day after day, and still have such a lack of humility so as to wonder which of them is the greatest (after Jesus) seems so unfathomable.
WOW! I so needed this! Awesome stuff!
Nice one Mark
Thanks for doing what you aim at
Solid vid: thanks for this!
Love your balance Mike ! Have to finish later, heading into work right now.
Thank you.
Specifically baptism of the holy spirit
I know of Bible study leaders who are like this. I was a member of a church that actually had evaluation test of Christian maturity, required for all members to take yearly.
I don't know how to explain this exactly, but the Church I go to now is kind of "losing it's lustre." I was a pre-school teacher over there and they unceremoniously dismissed me mainly because I am getting older and I am using a walker. I was upset, but I had to let it go, but it seems like the main reason I am going to that Church doesn't exist anymore.
He would grab Forest Gump, Great message Mike. Thanks.
Hey Mike, love your teachings, ELDER .even though some I disagree 😉 on.The question 1:03:18 ,I believe that is a sign as to SHOW who JESUS travels CLOSELY with .in the likes of PETER (HE IS THE CHURCH)
JAMES (HE IS THE SACRIFICE AS IN "THE FIRST DECIPLE TO BE SLAIN)
JOHN (THE REVELATOR,AS IN REVELATIONS).BLESS U SIR MIKE..So to sum it all up JESUS CHRIST MOVES CLOSELY WITH THE CHURCH,SACRIFICE AND REVELATIONS.
Good point about the child. In many languages, there's a word for *child* that doubles as the word for *servant*. Like in French, "garçon" means both "boy" and "waiter." Same in Greek (Strongs Greek 3816). This was part of their culture.
However, Jesus did not use that exact word. He uses G3813 (same root) for "child", and G1249 (deacon) for "servant". So He is pushing back against the culture even in that.
1:04:00 It's my guess that these disciples were closest friends to Jesus, as the same were also at Gethsemane.
1:08:10 this is so relatable hahaha! We definitely are a peculiar people.
Great teaching love it👍👏 just an observation but when you were telling that story about the worship leader going to another church there was some weird twanging and other noises in the background like from your guitar hmmm😳😱🦠🤭🤫😂
Boy do he, and it's a lot of correction needing done to staring right here in this country
LOL, I've heard some preachers call Peter, James and John the "remedial class."
Question: can you do the Lord's supper/communion at home by yourself or do you have to be two people?
chelyfranco Is you FaceTime someone your not doing it by yourself. 😄
I’m pretty sure you can do that by yourself.
You think you are better! 7:27
One correction, “Obey” your leaders, in Heb 13.17, is NEVER translated “obey” when used in the context of one person’s relationship to another, but is translated “to follow “, “to be persuaded “, and “to be convinced “. There is a Hebrew word hupakouo that means obey, but it is not used here!
What happened to Mark 9 verses 30-32? Mentioned briefly as part of Markan sandwich in Mark 9 verses 14-29...
I think the Church is what I would call "Moderate Faith." They are NOT like Kat Kerr (or her ilk) One of the problems is that I have been there so long (friends, etc.) Also, they have really helped me out (especially from 1984 until about 2019.)
I love this series! One minor request: could we not lump Bathsheba into the sins of David? She was hardly a willing participant. David was the king, she did not have options when summoned to him.
As a woman she was surely aware of who could possibly see her bathing. She must have known that the King was in town and that she could be seen from the palace. I as a woman think she WAS a willing participant. I guess she exactly knew what she did...
I never thought of Bathsheba "baiting" David before. I just thought she was "loose" in general. Like: Hey, everybody, Come and get it...I will have to think about this.
Anyway, what was Bathsheba doing taking a bath on the ROOF when her husband wasn't around? It seems like an open invitation.......
Mike... caught your stream last night and the very last thing you spoke of female preachers … I LOVE YOU AS A BLOOD BROTHER and I hope I am mistaken by understanding you said it is o.k. for females to preach … 1 Timothy CLEARLY says the overseer is to be THE HUSBAND OF ONE WIFE- CHAPTER 3- SEVERAL OTHER places too like in Corinthians where a wife is not allowed to speak in church but should ask question of husband at home... I trust you to rightly divide the word of GOD, so it is mega important for me to understand what you meant so late in the stream when mods could not clarify what was meant...
It does say in Timothy that women are not to preach nor usurp authority over the men . We can witness outside the church and minister to others but not as one having authority over the church. We should not have men sitting under the authority of a woman but the men should go to the pastor or elders and show the passage in Timothy . Women can lead a womens gathering and teach Sunday school to children or awanas or vacation bible school but that is it. And I am a woman telling you I understand the bible to say women are not to have authority over the church body.
Mike stated that because of how he understands the scriptures, he would leave the church, no question. he also added, that if the questioner was going to stay in that church, he needs to respect the office of pastor, and not make waves. But he expressly said that he himself would leave a church that ordained a female pastor.
@@bryanstortenbecker2724 What do you do if the Founding Pastor becomes sick or infirm in some way and can't easily carry on his ministry and his wife has gone to Bible College and taught in Women's Conventions? Should she be allowed to preach/teach in a group that contains men? Would Mike Winger leave the Church if this were the case?.I am in a situation similar to this and I'm not sure what to do.......
You're a face fidgeter. I am too. Scary times for that, tho.
Spot on Brother! I have seen way too many pastors that treat their congragation like their own personal kingdom. There is also too much tribelism in the Church. You tiptoed around one of the points of division at the end; a woman in leadership. I am from a Pentecostal and AoG background, and we see no Biblical problem with this (Yes, we can back this up with Scripture, but it's too long for the comment section). It saddens me to see such anger against us, and the demeaning manner in which our sisters are treated. I truly enjoy the teaching from Jan Markell, but am disappointed in how she is treated by your fellow Calvary Chapel Pastors.
I think the Calvary Chapel Pastors feel intimidated.......
Hey Mike, just a real quick question for you. Where does faith in God come from?
Above is my original question, I am making it a little clearer, I hope.
Where does faith in Jesus come from?
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
Hebrews 12:1-2 ESV
Hope that answers your question
@@I3lackVeNoM911 Thanks for the reply, I appreciate you taking the time. Mike's a busy guy so I doubt he'll be able to get around to this. Although I do see him answer questions from time to time.
The verses that you reference are for believers, if I understand them correctly. I say that because the word perfecter seems to imply there is something there to perfect.
Let me be a little more specific in my question and I'll update my OP also.
Where does faith in Jesus come from?
The Holy Spirit.
@@rickdavis2235 can you provide a verse for that?
Bryan Stortenbecker I Corinthians 12:3 one could say that he is the Lord, except by the Holy Spirit.
Hey
There should not be only one person leading the church. A pastor is not the only leader. It is biblically incorrect. The pastor should not be the only one over the flock this is why the churches are suffering.
I came out of a church like that, but my wife hasn't. Proper authority will always be attacked within a church, unfortunately my wife has submitted to a false authority. This passage rings very true in my life. Jesus' warning is damning to those who do not heed it.
Pastors and their families are also held to impossibly high standards, and when they make a mistake, fail, are human, they get torn apart .
Each of us have a story to tell, experiences in life that makes us teachers, not to lean against the cross and arrogantly say "YOU need some of this." But to hold onto the cross and say "Let me show you what saved me."
@@edmonddantes3640
I like how you said that.
Denise R: (My smartphone wouldn't let me spell your name right). If the Pastor shouldn't be the leader of the Church, who will be the leader? It can't be absolutely anarchy and pandemonium. The Bible says that God gave the Church: "Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors, and Teachers" for the Church. Are they just supposed to sit on their hands??
Mr. Winger, I have a question I do not believe that I have found an answer for on your videos. What bible translation do you prefer and why?
If this is something that you have already answered directly please provide a link and I'll look at it. I'd rather not have you continue to answer questions over and over again. Thank you, have a good day.
Can we call you mark as a inside joke.. if not it’s cool Mike
Tell me what separates a follower of Christ Jesus from those of the world? We trust in God...and not man..... even in a pandemic. We warn others of wolves...isn't that what good shepherds do? Or do you make excuses for wolves if you are a shepherd?
Amen! I have met preachers who get offended when someone doesn't use "Pastor" in front of his name!
Where in the Bible did _anyone_ get called by an ecclesiastical title? "Pastor Paul" or "Apostle Peter" or "Evangelist Philip" or "Prophet Moses."
Those words are ministries, not titles.
I'm a pastor. Please just call me "John."
BTW, we have preachers who insist on having a title, but sometimes they refer to the Son of God as simply "Jesus." No title for Jesus, but _you need one?_
(Of course it's not wrong to call him Jesus. The Bible does.)
Maybe you should bring up the 4th commandment. Most Christians don't keep it Holy. Jesus never changed it and man thought they could but do not have the authority to. Those who worship on Sunday when it's enforced will receive the mark of the beast.
Looks like you 'winged' it. Amen
In Jesus Christ you are eternally secure.
The Trinity is more than a community of love. It is more than a close family. It is a community of being. The persons of the Trinity share one being or one nature. In John 17:21 Jesus prays that those who believe in him will be one “just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you”. Again in verse 23 he speaks of “you in me”. Addressing the Father, he prays that his disciples may be one “even as we are one” (verse 22). Father, Son and Spirit mutually indwell one another. Theologians call this perichoresis. It is a Greek term conveying the idea of mutual indwelling so they share one life or one divine substance. It means the actions of one are the actions of all. The Father is in the Son. The Son is in the Father. It means that to see one member of the Trinity is to see all three. To see the Son is to see the Father (John 14:9). “I and the Father are one,” says Jesus (John 10:30). The three persons of God share one divine essence; they inhabit one divine being. God-in-himself, God in eternity, God from all eternity is a mutually indwelling, loving community.
Amen
Your pastor isn't your Shepherd,
that position is filled.
True sheep hear the real Shepherd's voice.
Pastors are lead sheep,
Find out where they are leading you.
God created each of us, unique, sees us as individuals, and so our walk with Christ is unique and individual.
What does "Pastors are lead sheep" mean? Does it mean "lead" like in a pencil? That wouldn't make sense 😕 Do mean "Pastors are leading their sheep? Please fill me in..
I've seen a "Church group" without a real Pastor and the result was utter pandemonium. They were like sheep without a Shepherd. It seemed like everyone was looking for some kind of leadership, but nobody could find it. They were meandering all around with no real guidance. It was like the Old Testament said: "Every 'man' did what was right in 'his' own sight." God gives us Pastors for some reason. As under-shepherds, but NOT dictators.
I want to like your teaching. However it would be more effective if you spoke with more authority. Christ brought a sword. People need to know this.
What do you mean by "speak with more authority"?
MrChrisyerzy hope this makes sense.. Christ, humanly speaking, would have blending into Jewish culture rather well from a superficial surface level. He was a carpenter, from a small town, etc, etc.. There was nothing unique regarding his actual physical appearance.. What made him very unique was the truth, wisdom and authority that he spoke with. Especially when challenging the religious leaders and regime of the time.. That said, today, we are also doing the same. We may have truth and wisdom in our teaching, but we lack the authority. And because of this, we end up looking like and talking like everyone else. Aka the world. Jesus spoke with immense authority not because he was God in flesh, but because the words he spoke brought such power and life, none wasted. Literally. We are not Christ. The student cannot be above the teacher, but we can be like the teacher. As it is written.. Mike seems to be a good teacher. A dime a dozen.. But this world needs Christians that boldly bring authority in the word spoken. Or else we look more like the world and not like Christ. My grandma was really nice just like Mike seems to be. But she had no authority in her word. This world doesn’t need nice. It’s needs the word spoken with authority. Wake up world. We are speaking!
I think Billy Graham spoke with authority. Is that a good example? Who wants a Pastor who speaks like Caspar Milquetoast?? (spelling?)
How are you honoring the position of a lead pastor by letting a woman take that position? I disagree that you should stay in that church.
Are you for or against women Pastors. I wasn't sure. Also, are you saying that Mike Winger shouldn't be the Pastor of his Church if he believes in women Pastors (occasionally).
Mike, this study has a few things that do not line up with scripture very well. I just found you this past week. But it concerns me. I thought I had found a sola scriptura teacher. But you are on the fence too much trying not to offend those in the wrong. I'm going to have to move on. You are very humble and likeable but I would rather have toes stepped on with truth than to tip toe around women having authority in the church and false teachers. I skipped most of the rest because of this. Please pray about this and research it.
Children are dirty, loud and don't keep their hands to themselves. Not sure why this culture elevates them.
It's so cool how you were born an adult. A modern marvel.
