  • For the first time I'm going to be streaming my Sunday evening Bible study from home. Jesus' teaching in this passage, Mark 9:33-42, is meant to stop abuses in leadership, unnecessary division and competitive self-seeking in Christians. These issues are so relevant to us today that we need to take Jesus' words to heart. It may require that we change some things about ourselves or our ministries. Subscribe and make sure to click the bell icon if you want notifications when I go live. Keep your eyes on Jesus.

" They love titles" I have a degree in religious studies but did not go to seminary. I taught sunday school for years and then was asked to " fill in" for the youth pastor. I ended up filling in for 4 years. The senior pastor called me one day and was upset that nobody called me " Pastor" I told the Pastor I am not a pastor and I am not offended. The church was a foreign language. Based church and the pastor told me there is an honorific term in their culture meaning pastor in training that people should call me and brought me up before the congregation to let them know they MUST use this term. My youth group kids have known me since Sunday school and have called me Mr Jones since they've known me. I told them to just keep calling me Mr Jones,....that did not go over well lol. This type of stuff and some other things that were being done ( or not done) by leadership played into my decision to resign and change churches. I just wanted to teach God's word and give the kids some apologetic training. Sorry for the long post, this obviously still weighing on my heart. Thanks " Mark" for this series, I have been really enjoying it. Stay safe and healthy

I was a pre-school teacher over there and they unceremoniously dismissed me mainly because I am getting older and I am using a walker. Good point about the child. In many languages, there's a word for *child* that doubles as the word for *servant*. Like in French, "garçon" means both "boy" and "waiter." Same in Greek (Strongs Greek 3816). This was part of their culture.
However, Jesus did not use that exact word. He uses G3813 (same root) for "child", and G1249 (deacon) for "servant". So He is pushing back against the culture even in that.

I trust you to rightly divide the word of GOD, so it is mega important for me to understand what you meant so late in the stream when mods could not clarify what was meant...

It does say in Timothy that women are not to preach nor usurp authority over the men . We can witness outside the church and minister to others but not as one having authority over the church. We should not have men sitting under the authority of a woman but the men should go to the pastor or elders and show the passage in Timothy . Women can lead a womens gathering and teach Sunday school to children or awanas or vacation bible school but that is it. And I am a woman telling you I understand the bible to say women are not to have authority over the church body.

You tiptoed around one of the points of division at the end; a woman in leadership. I am from a Pentecostal and AoG background, and we see no Biblical problem with this (Yes, we can back this up with Scripture, but it's too long for the comment section). Where in the Bible did _anyone_ get called by an ecclesiastical title? "Pastor Paul" or "Apostle Peter" or "Evangelist Philip" or "Prophet Moses."
Those words are ministries, not titles.
I'm a pastor. Please just call me "John."
BTW, we have preachers who insist on having a title, but sometimes they refer to the Son of God as simply "Jesus." No title for Jesus, but _you need one?_

Maybe you should bring up the 4th commandment. Most Christians don't keep it Holy. Jesus never changed it and man thought they could but do not have the authority to. Those who worship on Sunday when it's enforced will receive the mark of the beast.

  • @jesuschristbiblebiblestudy

Looks like you 'winged' it. Amen
In Jesus Christ you are eternally secure.
The Trinity is more than a community of love. It is more than a close family. It is a community of being. The persons of the Trinity share one being or one nature. In John 17:21 Jesus prays that those who believe in him will be one “just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you”. Again in verse 23 he speaks of “you in me”. Addressing the Father, he prays that his disciples may be one “even as we are one” (verse 22). Father, Son and Spirit mutually indwell one another. Theologians call this perichoresis. It is a Greek term conveying the idea of mutual indwelling so they share one life or one divine substance. It means the actions of one are the actions of all. The Father is in the Son. The Son is in the Father. It means that to see one member of the Trinity is to see all three. To see the Son is to see the Father (John 14:9). “I and the Father are one,” says Jesus (John 10:30). The three persons of God share one divine essence; they inhabit one divine being. God-in-himself, God in eternity, God from all eternity is a mutually indwelling, loving community.
    Amen

    that position is filled.
True sheep hear the real Shepherd's voice.
    Pastors are lead sheep,
Find out where they are leading you.
God created each of us, unique, sees us as individuals, and so our walk with Christ is unique and individual.

I've seen a "Church group" without a real Pastor and the result was utter pandemonium. They were like sheep without a Shepherd. It seemed like everyone was looking for some kind of leadership, but nobody could find it. They were meandering all around with no real guidance. It was like the Old Testament said: "Every 'man' did what was right in 'his' own sight." God gives us Pastors for some reason. As under-shepherds, but NOT dictators.

I want to like your teaching. However it would be more effective if you spoke with more authority. Christ brought a sword. People need to know this.

What do you mean by "speak with more authority"?

MrChrisyerzy hope this makes sense.. Christ, humanly speaking, would have blending into Jewish culture rather well from a superficial surface level. He was a carpenter, from a small town, etc, etc.. There was nothing unique regarding his actual physical appearance.. What made him very unique was the truth, wisdom and authority that he spoke with. Especially when challenging the religious leaders and regime of the time.. That said, today, we are also doing the same. We may have truth and wisdom in our teaching, but we lack the authority. And because of this, we end up looking like and talking like everyone else. Aka the world. Jesus spoke with immense authority not because he was God in flesh, but because the words he spoke brought such power and life, none wasted. Literally. We are not Christ. The student cannot be above the teacher, but we can be like the teacher. As it is written.. Mike seems to be a good teacher. A dime a dozen.. But this world needs Christians that boldly bring authority in the word spoken. Or else we look more like the world and not like Christ. My grandma was really nice just like Mike seems to be. But she had no authority in her word. This world doesn’t need nice. It’s needs the word spoken with authority. Wake up world. We are speaking!

I think Billy Graham spoke with authority. Is that a good example? Who wants a Pastor who speaks like Caspar Milquetoast?? (spelling?)

How are you honoring the position of a lead pastor by letting a woman take that position? I disagree that you should stay in that church.

Are you for or against women Pastors. I wasn't sure. Also, are you saying that Mike Winger shouldn't be the Pastor of his Church if he believes in women Pastors (occasionally).

Mike, this study has a few things that do not line up with scripture very well. I just found you this past week. But it concerns me. I thought I had found a sola scriptura teacher. But you are on the fence too much trying not to offend those in the wrong. I'm going to have to move on. You are very humble and likeable but I would rather have toes stepped on with truth than to tip toe around women having authority in the church and false teachers. I skipped most of the rest because of this. Please pray about this and research it.
