    While the Porsche Cayman doesn't quite have the cult following of the 911 Carrera, its mid-engine layout has often been the configuration of choice for the most well balance sports car. Last year, Porsche added
    "718" the Cayman and Boxster and replaced the howling flat-6 with a new turbocharged flat-4. The result is more power and lots of torque and a new unique sound that we haven't heard in a Porsche since the 718 race car back in the 1960's. With the GTS trim returning for 2018, it now puts out a stout 365 HP and 317 lb-ft of torque when opt for Porsche mind reading PDK transmission from its 2.5L turbo flat-4 cylinder engine. Enthusiast looking for the best handling sports car in the segment should look no further.

    Hey everyone! Thank you so much for watching. The love and support we've gotten from you all over the years is just incredibly overwhelming and we can't thank you all enough for your continued support! This video was one of the most difficult to film as we tried to remain objective throughout and not appear biased and hopefully we nailed that balance. It's an incredible car and we'll be sure to update you guys at least once a month and let you know of any issues, good or bad! Enjoy the full review, we leave tomorrow for LA to drive and film the refreshed 2019 Honda Pilot!

    Great review. I have a 2018 911 GT3 which I traded in for 981 Boxster GTS which I had for 4 years.
    For everyday driving, I would take the 718 GTS over the GT3 hands down. You're not missing out too much with Apple Car Play.
    Also never think that 718 is less of a Porsche because it's not a 911, it simply not true! If it has a Porsche badge it a true Porsche. Also the same deal with the flat 4 vs the flat 6. The 981 GTS has a better flat 6 note, but those 718 turbos kick you in the nuts each time, so it makes up for it.
    The boxer engines love to rev!! Enjoy your new toy, it will be the best car you will ever own.
    Congrats and enjoy your Porsche.

    I picked up my new Cayman 718 GTS one month ago (May 7th 2019) and LOVE it... Just put over 5K miles on it with no problems in just under four weeks... This U Tube video help me decide on my purchase... Thanks for your Outstanding review!!! Keep up the hard work and your great reviews!!!... Note: I'm going for another 5K Porsche trip in three weeks!!! My car will not gather dust in the garage!!! I describe my 718 GTS as it's like driving a high performance motorcycle when it comes to acceleration and braking similar to my K1600 motorcycle, but its nice to stay comfy inside vice outside... The handling is off the charts, best car I've ever had... The new Cayman GT4 with the new 6 cylinder will definitely be on my radar around 2022, but I have no regrets with the Cayman GTS, NONE... I had one long single day drive putting 1300 miles on my Cayman and averaged 27mpg / 79 mph!!! I'm 6'1" tall, 220 lbs, but the leg room is perfect for my long legs, no aches or pains in my back after this long drive... Love, LOVE IT!!

      When you are buying a premium brand car like Porsche, you have to accept that they are not building cars for the masses like Ford or Toyota. They are building cars for a clientele that want's to personalize nearly everything. The 'base' car is kind of like a blank canvas to express yourself on. They do go a bit overboard on the amount of options they offer. . .

    Porsche sports cars puts the power down so well. Thanks to its engine placement, you can floor the accelerator with confidence and not worry about wheel spin or loss of control. Once you get in one of these, you'll think front engine "sports car" are a joke. Front engine cars make the rear so light, its impossible to put 100% of the power down without wheel spin.

  • @williamw9918
    @williamw9918 Před 6 lety +1

    they actually *FIXED* the orientation of the +/- shift in the manual gate -- pulling back SHOULD be an upshift and pushing forward a downshift. Porsche had this wrong for many years and fixed it on the 991.1 GT3 and now the correction has trickled down to the carrera/boxster/cayman range.
    It's how sequential gearbox shift levers are in race cars. When you're accelerating and being pushed back into your seat, it's more ergonomic to pull back on the lever rather than push forward.
    Nice review!

    After seeing this, heating your opinions and being able to hear the note, at least on your vid, I doubt I would have any issues or anything else with the flat four.
    What I'm wondering now is if the four cylinder configuration allows for a bit more room in the bay. Seems like it would.

People just want to complain about something even though they will never own one. I think it sounds awesome, especially when you're revving it up, and it definitely performs better than the previous model. I definitely plan to buy one of these in the next few years. The Cayman GTS is a phenomenal car. Ignore the fact it isn't a showstopper in terms of raw power; it has plenty to make it an absolute blast to drive. If anyone has driven a 2016 or earlier cayman with the NA engines, this car feels much different with the improved power band. I previously had a 2016 Cayman GTS which we put a lot of miles on cruising the coast, and a couple track days. I have not owned a 718 but did a track day in one and was blown away by how great it drove. Do not get sucked in by the allure of the "supercar 911's". I have a new 911 Turbo S now and I can honestly say I had more fun driving around town in the Cayman(much more playful), and on the back roads or track it's just more enjoyable spending a little more time in the gears focusing on technique. 911 is an amazing car, but Cayman owners are enjoying their cars just as much if not more. If all you care about is drag racing... then go get some enormous-go-straight-american-hotrod.

    • @rossyannis3000
      @rossyannis3000 Před 5 lety

      Sure, the 718 is sharper, but the engine note for me was a disappointment. Had the ecu of my 981 Cayman S remapped to 364hp, 420Nm, 0-100km/h 3.89sec. Believe me, it's now a beast. Pulls like the clappers from 3500rpm to redline, with the legendary Porsche wail. I laugh during and after every drive
      ... The best $1900 option Porsche never included! All on stock air filters, inlet and exhaust manifolds.

      Serge Beaulieu I cant stand the crackle and pop. So artificial I cancelled my purchase of a 718 GTS. Just terrible.

    thank you that was the first review I actually got to hear the engine compared to my 987, it really reminds me of my old Honda from the 90's with intake/exhaust. Definietly an angry 4 cylinder, love the flat-6 sound but this isn't bad and reminds me of my youth.

    One day I’ll have this in my garage. Bought my first car about 5 months ago, ‘19 Miata RF. Absolutely love it, I can’t imagine having a Cayman GTS. I’d end up marrying it.

    Well you convinced me, I have been thinking of getting one of these for a while. After watching this I phoned the Porsche garage to make an appointment, going in a couple of days to order a GTS in Lava orange. I had an f-type but didn’t like it due to the bad build quality and cheap interior, great sound but that was about it.

      Yeah it's okay. I mean, it's nowhere near as good as a 1.8l Toyota Corolla in terms of sporty performance and driving dynamics, but the Porsche is definitely second best... which is still a good position.

    Good review. My Cayman S will be delivered in December. It's a long time to wait, but you get it optioned exactly the way you want it. I also went with the PDK - better use of the power, quicker shifts and 'cause traffic.

    I think the love affair with the 911 is more associated with history and heritage. I know that is one of the things I love about mine. Although, mid -engine design is king.(Corvette is coming with a mid-engine, cool!)

    Have great respect for your reviewing skills, its not easy to do, I reviewed the 718 Cayman last week and agree with most of what you say, I wish I could get 40k views in 2 days !!
