Should I buy a Porsche 718 Cayman S ? [MY NEXT CAR !]

  • The first contender in my hunt for a new car is the Porsche 718 Cayman S. It might not have the practicality I am looking for but it is superb to drive and maybe that will be enough to persuade me to buy one ?!
    A huge thanks to Porsche Centre Portsmouth for lending me the car for the day.

    I loved how excited you got when you started to initially push on , as petrolheads we all recognise that buzz when a car is phenomenal to drive. The Petrol Pooch will be with you for some years to come. So unless you wait there will never be a good time. Never look back saying “I Wish” Look back saying “Im Glad”. 718s would be on my list. Another thing to consider, Porsche’s customer service is top notch. Their staff is always willing to help and cater to any needs you might have. That car will always turn heads but most importantly it will always put a smile on yours. If it were my money, I’d go with the Porsche.

      @@BobK5 Wow really? That’s very disheartening to hear, I have only had positive experiences with my dealership. I’m a younger guy in my early 20s. They always took care of my first 944 and even after it was crashed and totaled they contacted me and were willing to help me look for another car. Anytime I had the car in for anything, a service or an inspection, they took very good care of it even if it wasn’t a show car. Always took extra time to hand wash it, gave me good rates on parts etc. The staff themselves are kind always offering refreshments and quick to assist. That has been my experience with my specific dealership. Both of them actually. They also have me a lot of help over the phone in trying to diagnose things and aid in any quotations I had about my car. Unfortunate he wasn’t treated that way.

      @@TakeFlightGarage is Take Flight Garage a Porsche garage? Seriously though, I’m just repeating what an owner said, I stopped to speak to him about his 718 s as it looked awesome. He had the back and side windows tinted as otherwise it got really hot in there, did you find that?
      Have you got a manual box or semi auto, sorry to ask so many questions but I’d like a view from someone who’s got that experience.
      Btw which dealer do you use?

    • @TakeFlightGarage
      @TakeFlightGarage Před 3 lety

      @@BobK5 my go to dealership is Porsche Chandler in Chandler Arizona. My first 944 was actually totaled in March. I recently acquired newer model that’s already very well sorted so I haven’t had to worry about it too much. I have yet to take it down there but they let the local PCA host membership meetings there so I’m hoping to be at the next one in July. This car already has the rear quarter windows tinted on it which is nice. I may have them do the side passenger windows though I’m still debating on that.

I did not get on with it. Sold it and bought a Mustang GT, sold that and I am now looking to go back to a Cayman , or maybe some other options. Cayman is at the top of the list. Both are great cars and very similar from a handling and drive point of view BUT the power delivery, sound and feel of the 981 are in a different league!!! I've been a 911 "snob" for 6 years, really because when I grew up, the Boxster/Cayman platform didn't exist. My OPC has loaned me several while my 911s have been serviced or had warranty work, and I have to say, the Cayman is the only car I never want to give back - it's just brilliant. I don't fully understand your requirement for nearly new, but if it were Mrs Windy, our two dogs and me, I'd be looking at a late 997.2 Carrera (or Targa 4S for ultimate practicality) or a leggy early 991.1 for your indicated budget. The OPC extended warranty can be renewed until the car is 15 years old and gives great peace of mind. I'm not knocking the 718 platforms, but you know you need to have a 911 in your life at some time, so why not now?

    PP- I have to agree with the choice. It's a superior car in every way to prior generation. The S version, with 350 BPH is 'enough' to do duty from the garage, it's still too new to be chip programmed (warranty), and, a few choice options really up the car to very close to supercar levels (PSM, sports chrono...) Personally, I LIKE the 4 cylinder turbo sound (flame suit ON!), and, would want all of the improved characteristics MORE than the wail of the venerable flat 6.
    Both generations are 'special' enough, and buget limits DO keep marriages together, but, I the think the ever so slightly/gently used 718 Cayman S is a better car is too many ways- a true car lovers sleeper of an ownership experience. A genuine "Poor Man's" 911 911.2 Porsche GT3 with a six speed manual (starts @ $150k- Oops!). I'd argue that it's brilliant, but- NOT 3 times as good as a 718 Cayman S.

    Good balanced review and pleased to see you are not swayed by the anti turbo 4 brigade! Having previously had a 981 Boxster I knew after the first test drive of the 718 (Boxster) it would be my next car, but after reading the reviews the new car received I began to have doubts. So I tried a used 981 Boxster GTS and it did sound great; but when I went out in a 718S Boxster the performance blew me away. The exhaust note was also present even when going slow, whereas the 981 could only be heard at high revs. Before my final decision I went out in a 911 4S Cabriolet but after the Boxster the driving experience was disappointing. I hope you find the Cayman practical enough for your pooches! 👍

    Lovely Ve-hikkel. Kia Ora from the Deep South of New Zealand! I recently went from an old daily driver Legacy Wagon (JDM 3.0R) which did everything - hunting, camping, fishing, taking dogs and LOTS of daily driving etc and was my company car (my company) - and replaced it with an AUDI S5 Sportback, the 3.0t. I couldn’t bear to put the puppers in or take it down a dirt track. Eventually bought George, an elderly Diesel manual Discovery that now has all outdoors gear in it permanently. George cost nothing and costs nothing to run. So far it has been the best practical solution. I am considering a Cayman next instead of the S5. When warranty runs out. Interested to see what you decide on.

    All I can say is whatever Cayman/Boxster you get, do yourself a favor and get the manual transmission....much more fun and driver involving and engaging.
    I owned a new 2005 Porsche Boxster for 10 years and loved every minute of it.
    Was mostly trouble free, and I did a lot of the maintenance on it myself.
    I say life is short, get yourself a Porsche and enjoy.
    Just a little heads up, my Boxster had the fabulous flat 6 Boxer engine and it sounded absolutely glorious, not so much with the flat 4 in the 718.
    That sounds more like a Subaru.
    If you think the noise from the 718 is brilliant, take out a 981 with the flat 6 and you will hear a huge difference for the better.
    Plus a 981 will be cheaper to buy.

    Hi Ped & Petrol Pooch
    Brilliant, brilliant😀
    Takes me back two years when I went to test drive 991 Carrera 4 S, used, which I could not possibly justify spending the cash. However having experienced what I would describe as a brilliant engineering work of art, heart overuled head, and PDK version joined the garage. Not sure if Petrol Pooch and Petrol Pup will approve, but you already face a great dilema! You could be damned if you do and damned if you don’t.

    there is a parcel shelf behind the seats of the boxster, but you better not lower the top if there's something there. It's deeper than the one in the cayman. You have to remove the wind deflector to access it.

  • @RogerBaileyOnCars
    @RogerBaileyOnCars Před 5 lety +36

    You liked it then and rightly so. Having spent time with both cars, I can say the 718 is better than the 981, it feels more sorted and the torque from that turbo motor is addictive, however the 981 has a way better engine note and slightly better throttle response. I have to say while I love cars such as Audi TT's & BMW M cars, they are eclipsed by Caymans & 911's in feel good factor by some margin.

    Damn I have wanted one of these beasts for so long. The GTS looks nice but I think the S is the most intelligent option for me. My last coupe was a Toyota 86 GTS and I feel like the only step up is the Cayman. Similar overall lines and shape as the 86 too, albeit far more beautiful. Watching your face, smiles and reactions while driving this is the reason why I love a good sports car. Driving can be so mundane, especially lengthy trips. So why not make the process enjoyable!
