  • I review this 2018 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS owned by Redline Reviews! Despite the change to a 4 cylinder engine, the Cayman is still a very impressive car, but is its as-tested price of over $94,000 justified? Watch the video to see, and let me know your thoughts on these in the comments! Also huge thanks to Redline Reviews for providing their Porsche to review! You can check out their channel here: / 2theredlinellc and make sure to subscribe for their awesome reviews and for updates on this Cayman!

I love my new Cayman 718 GTS... I love this car... I decided to drive the local 55 mph speed limit and managed 37.1 mpg... On a high speed run from Grand Junction Colorado to Los Angeles I averaged 27 mpg, but my over the road average speed was 79mph!!... The seats are amazing... I'm 6'1 220 and it fits like a glove... My day drive back to Los Angeles was 2,000 miles and I wasn't sore at all... Ive had it now for one month and its traveled thru 10 states so far... Getting ready to take it up the PCH to Seattle and then cut over to the midwest... Amazing Car... I can't wait to trade it in in about 3 years for a 2022 Cayman GT4... The GTS Cayman is Amazing!!...

Really love this car. It’s my dream attainable car. I have watched a few of your videos and Do enjoy the production quality, the editing, camera angles etc. One criticism I would give is your heavy use on words like “cool” and “nice”. Also this next point is just a personal thing most of the extras on that car were added options and its hard to differentiate what someone buying a new Caymen would get compared to the car you reviewed. Otherwise a well put together review.

Great review, Matt. I've been in love with the Cayman since the very beginning and I'm looking forward to owning either a GTS or (hopefully) a GT4 eventually. I too really like the sound of the new flat 4 and Porsche actually improved it for the 2019 model year, making it a bit richer and deeper. I think there are a couple videos on YT comparing the sound of the 2018 vs the 2019, but I couldn't find them.

Great review Matt. I liked how you explained that to engineer/develop a mid-engined car using slightly more expensive lightweight materials costs more money than a run-of-a-mill affordable sportscar. Its good that you pointed out how screwed-together Porsches are too. And I agree, I don't have much of a problem with its sound because I like Subarus too - although given the choice, I'd probably go for a Cayman GT4 or a Supra still purely because of the sound that they make.

Hey Matt, how would you compare this 718 Cayman GTS to the previous generation Cayman with the 6 cyl engine? Also, how does the Cayman compare to the M2 Competition, in both Acceleration and handling? It appears the Cayman is both faster and better handling than the M2C. I would say how about compared to the M4 as price is more comparable, but M4 is much bigger and heavier and I know it doesn't handle as well. Porsche is the standard others are trying to compare to. Glad you enjoyed the car and it's nice to see you and Sofyan share cars and collaborate.

    • @MattMaranMotoring
      @MattMaranMotoring  Před 5 lety +1

I've only driven the first gen Cayman and the 2016 GT4, so it's hard for me to compare to a previous gen regular Cayman. Haven't driven an M2 Competition yet, but it definitely felt sharper and faster than the regular M2, but the M2 also has a much lower price.

I haven't reviewed one but I drove a ton of them back when I worked at a Porsche dealer as a detailer. From a driving standpoint they're fun, but reliability is hit or miss. I've seen some that run forever without any major issues, while others just seem to be money pits. If reliability isn't too big a worry for you, I could work out well, otherwise I'd stay away from old German cars, most are money pits.

The new Cayman GTS 4.0, with the flat 6 is only $87k.(Without options). It’s got same engine as the GT4 but its more of a “daily” then that GT4. It’s making the older GTS less desirable! But at $87k it’s still very expensive... especially with a couple of options you’re close to $100k for a small sports car.... but its the perfect Porsche! (or a GTS Boxster 4.0)

I remember the few times I had a chance to drive this.
Especially in manual form although the pdk was great.
It has superb balance, and a almost perfect man machine cooperation aspect to it.
Not the fastest, or technically even the best handling, but a perfect balance in looks and performance.
Having said that I preferred the 911's including the GT3 and regular versions, something about the larger size, more weight, smoother ride, more room, and of course V6, that make it feel like a better all around car to me especially for longer trips, but the 911 is priced out of most people's price range even used.
I definitely would not turn down, the 718 in any version, but I really feel the V6 makes this car better in almost every way.
Although the lighter one will handle better, and may be even a little faster, but the turbo fours just have to work to hard, I love the effortless power of the V6.
Maybe some type of light hybrid is in the future for this car to bring the feel of a V6's effortless power back.

Each to there own, and I appreciate the costs, but it always seems odd, or rather a missed opportunity, to get the GTS and to not option the GTS interior pack which is exclusive to this model. The spec across the whole car, both inside and out, is one of the worse I have seen. Amazing car, don’t get me wrong, I am even waiting for the 2019 GTS refresh (rumours of a flat 6) to buy, but again why buy the GTS and not take the GTS options? In summary, amazing car, dreadful spec (not even the extended leather dash, so it’s got the cheap plastic feel everywhere). And PDK? for a GTS?

This channel has not grew for a while and views are exceptionally low for the amount of subscribers you have. You need to change your intro, look at redline reviews intro because his intro is really on point and it certainly interests viewers to continue watching. Cut down the video length on unimportant parts because it’s way too long, for example like no one cares about the trunk space or cup holders in their 2 door sports car because it won’t be their daily driver. It’s sad to see that you’re not getting views anymore.

    • @MattMaranMotoring

I appreciate the suggestions. I know people that do daily drive Caymans though, and my videos are always focused on what it's like to live with a car, hence why I talk about cubbies, cup holders and trunk space, because for car shoppers that information is important. Redline Reviews talks about these things too. There's also similarly long videos that are very successful from guys like Doug DeMuro, so I don't think the video length is the issue. Wish I could figure out why I get such low views, but so far no one has been able to come up with a good theory, myself included.

@@MattMaranMotoring I watch your reviews and have for several years. The reason I watch you is because you seem like a genuinely nice guy. Your reviews seem un-biased. No gimmicks. I think part of the reason you get less views is there are just so many car reviewers these days. Doug Demuro kind of exploded with popularity, and part of that is a lot of his reviews are click-bait-ey. There are only so many car videos I can watch in a day. I have time to watch one video, I might watch Doug, I might watch someone else, or I may watch you. If the total views were based on just my viewing habits, it would be an equal split between you and everyone else. You also just don't do as many videos as other reviewers. Maybe thats because you are getting older and have a real life, etc. Which is fine. You helped me decide to buy my 2.0T camaro based on your unbiased (and very early) review of that car. Keep doing it if you love it, but you could quit tomorrow knowing you helped many people make big car decisions. We all appreciate you man! I'm still here watching years later.

I don't care if it is faster, the four banger ruined this car, turbo lag and sounds like sh*t. It is a nice car but ninety grand for a turbo four, no thank you. Especially when you can get a corvette or the new Supra for much much less. Hell even a Camaro or a Mustang would be a better option.
If I were to ever get a Cayman/Boxter it would be a used six cylinder version, but only if the price was reasonable which is typically not the case so...
