The Tech Death version of Rap God
Having the lyrics on screen makes you realize even more how fckin fast it is!
Calamus Will Animate has a karaoke version :D
Only faster
He's a rap devil!!😂
The lead singer, Oli Peters, stated that he intentionally based his writing style on Tech N9ne. He talks about on the Beth Roars podcast Good Job.
Your patrons have a great taste in music
Sure do! 😁
I’ve seen archspire two times and they sound perfect live. Just exactly like the record.
Second this, the most impressive metal show I've ever attended: played through all of Relentless Mutation flawlessly and even my two favorite tracks off The Lucid Collective 🤟
Pretty much sounded as if the sound tech played the album over the system!
Yep same experience. Exceptional musicians
Saw them last week - they totally blew my mind!
I’m seeing them today , can’t wait
The best way I can describe archspire, it's like holding on to a bullet train by the railing.
Fast as hell, beautiful scenery, elevated heart rate
I think this song is one of the more just speedy and plain songs. I think some of their other songs are a bit more musical. This one is just pure Tech. I personally love Archspire.
Matthew Davies I totally agree. I just think if you’re checking out the band for the first time this isn’t the best track. Unless the listener is really into extreme metal.
This is my favorite from them lol
I think A Dark Horizontal is a perfect example of the speed not coming at the expense of the main melody
@@alatreon7451I'm on a drone corpse aviator kick right now. Fckin INCREDIBLE song
I've been listening to Archspire nonstop every single day. I'm obsessed with these guys.
Dave Otero of Flatline audio was the engineer if anyone was curious. He also has a youtube channel where he goes over his recording and mixing processes.
Yeees!! They are sick! From Archspire i would recommend "A dark horizontal", i think you would like it too
Exactly bro 🤘 dark horizontal is another excellent choice from this amazing band (the pinnacle of Technical Death Metal) . I think he will definitely like the millions of musical ideas from dark horizontal along with the rest of the album
I think A Dark Horizontal is some of their best work in terms of melodic and harmonic feel.
@@getmeouttahere7638 i also feel the same way awesome song
Yeah, that's my favorite track from the album. I love the Lovecraftian lyrical theme.
Check out Rivers of Nihil's song The Subtle Change Including the forest of transition and dissatisfaction dance. I think you will dig it.
I second this
yes, agreed
This album was recorded here in Denver with some of the best in the business. They even went up in the mountains and fired various guns and rifles and recorded them. They're in the mix on a few songs.
Also, no joke, Jason Mamoa is a big fan of Archspire.
"Callus wil animate" has it in the intro
That's sweet they recorded here in Denver!
@@p.ozurkill3143 With Dave Otero over at Flatline Audio in Westminster. Dave's got a video on youtube about the production and going shooting and recording the gunfire for the samples, etc.
Archspire became my favorite metal band from this album
They’re like the newer Necrophagist
It's such a good feeling to hear someone from a professional background that can point out the things! I've always been a person that pushes the envelope and like to chock people, but at the same time I just want to be accepted. The recent years have been such a good time because extreme metal has finally gotten the recognition of not "just" being noise. Both the fascination of and wanting to understand how extreme and harsh vocals are made, especially without harming oneself. As well as the virtuosity of musicians being able to play like this, let a lone live. As a Swede I am extremely proud of Meshuggah for being such a progressive band in metal.
I've been trying to get different musicians and vocal coaches to react to this band and song without luck. So thank you so much for doing this! Can't wrap my head around how I haven't seen your videos or been recommended them.
I think most of us who already knew the song waited for his reaction at the "paus" :P
Needles to say, this is the first video from you that I watch. I'd love to see you react to a Igorrr song. It's hard to pick a song, since they can vary a lot in style. But the song ieuD is a pretty good one.
Thanks for the comment! And as for Igorrr I've checked out ieuD and Downgrade Desert and both were wild! czcams.com/video/UC_zCXFKYdg/video.html
@@CriticalReactions Awesome! I will be sure to check them out!
Such an interesting review. And yes, this is their sound on pretty much every record. I love this band for the reasons you mentioned that you didnt like. They are definitely a "niche" sound. I really like the "in your face", "strap in" approach they use, as i listen to a ton of metal, and am always looking for the faster, more intense, styles. I think theyve locked in a very interesting sound, and i think if you give them a good listen, you will start to understand why this band takes the direction it does.
You would probably be interested in the new Beneath The Massacre :^)
@@nickbell3546 100% ahead of you my dude hahah. One of my favorite bands
@@GoodAlexanderVibes I just found them last month and have been listening to them non-stop haha. I also just tabbed out Treacherous and messaged them on IG so they could proofread it
GoodAlexanderVibes he should do a review on Brain Drill or Monumental Torment lol
First song i hears was just strange for me but when I listened the whole album i started to really love them. I like how they combine clean tones with in your face riffs. They are great live too
The album this is from is a horror story and the lyrics reflect it. It's about this shadowy organization A.U.M. and it has a lot of cthulu influence it feels like. Archspire also practices and performs live with a click track in their monitors, that's what keeps them on time.
The A.U.M is not a "shadowy organisation" it is an inter dimensional being or collective. It is some times referred to as a singular entity and other times not. The ambiguity is what makes it so horrifying akin to Lovecraft.
I've seen them like 10 times and have never heard the metronome. These guys are just much more talented than that man.
@@shanedelgado666 The metronome will come through their in ear monitoring. You won't hear it but they will, a lot of professional bands use the same approach, especially more Tech/Prog oriented ones. Not saying that they're not talented (I'm a huge fan, saw them with Revocation and they were next level ridiculous), just pointing that out to you. Just helps with timing, transitions etc. Also really helps compose a set list as you don't have to compensate for the potential tempo changes during songs. Really helps keep a band sounding extremely tight.
@@asajones5150 no I understand ear monitor. They play too fast not too. Original comment said monitor and I assumed he meant floor monitors. Just a miscommunication. My point was there is no audible metronome live.
@@shanedelgado666 Ah yes, that makes sense! Honestly though, these guys are so ridiculous that I can imagine they could probably play their material extremely well without a metronome in their monitors!
Your reaction was priceless at 1:25 LMFAO if you came trying to keep up with the lyrics, you are lost. 🤣🤣
They actually are quite tight live...I've seen them twice...amazing...
Watching these guys playing is a kind of musician porn)
Great analysis on the song, production and the vocals.
Subbed.
I knew this reaction was coming... Even though there's a lot going on, I think this is one of their more boring songs. Check out Human Murmuration, if you want to hear a better composed track from them. It's a similar experience as this song, but more enjoyable. lol
Rings of Saturn is another band in the same realm as Archspire, that I like more. The term "aliencore" was coined because of their sound/themes. Also, their guitar (Lucas Mann) might very well be extraterrestrial because a lot of his guitar work is so unbelievably fast/clean/technical.
I agree...this one is more about the speed, skill, precision, etc. than the actual song structure/composition. Still cool, but not as much to break down or analyze as some other songs.
I'm gonna second Human Murmuration...and third it, and fourth it lol. It's my favorite track by them and like you said, it much more well composed over Involuntary Doppleganger which feels more like a shock value showcase of speed and ability.
This is again one of those times i really have to scratch my head on why people suggest one song over another for a first reaction. Human Murmuration would have been SO much better.
I agree, Human Murmuration is definitely the best one on this album imo
He wont like RoS if he didnt like this hahahaha.
At first the song lasted 12 minutes, but recording in studio is expensive, so they turned up a little bit
Persepolis - Septic Flesh, it's symphonic death metal, i love that song
Thanks for this reaction- love your insights!
You're spot on shouting out the producer, Dave Otero is the best mixing engineer in the metal business. Another group he produced is Cattle Decapitation, i'd recommend Bring Back the Plague as a first listen
Very interesting you point out the rap influence. The drummer founded the band looking for a singer who could growled in the same fashion that the rapper Tech N9ne raps. Great reaction!
Hehe, yes, this is pretty much what they do. But most of the time much more interesting than this song.
On the dark lyrics, their albums follow a concept. They cover stories about an organisation called A.U.M. which is comparable to the SCP Project.
Musically I can recommend "Human Murmuration" (which is the most atmospheric song of the whole album in my opinion), "Relentless Mutation", "Lucid Collective Somnambulation" and "Kairos Chamber" (pretty untypical for them, but I like it)
Great review, by far the best of the many I've seen of this band and this particular song. You definitely know your stuff. May I suggest some Inferi (onslaught of the covenant, within the dead horizon) or Beyond Creation (coexistence, fundamental process)? Cheers!
Edit: Or any song on The path of Apotheosis, Revenant, The Aura or Earthborn Evolution
Instant subscribe. Archspire is incredible, I'm hoping you'll react to more of them, and more technical death metal.
glad to see you reacted to gorguts a couple days ago, that was my first question after seeing this video
Gula by First Fragment.
Don't know why people always recommend this song. By all means, I love Archspire, but this is one of their weaker songs. If you'd like to give them another try at some point, I'd definitely recommend either A Dark Horizontal, or Relentless Mutation.
Check out Apparition by Spawn of Possession. Those guys take a bunch of influence from classical music and it shows in their composition.
Just waiting for the video to process :)
Spawn of possession is like the better version of archspire with more brains, archspire sounds like cheap plastic :(
@@2scrimble9 Bad take
As a fan of Archspire, I really enjoyed this commentary. Lots of apt comments and interesting food for thought.
Great analysis. I honestly thought you'd dismiss it as JUST shock value but you continue to enthrall me with your take 🤘
I do what I can to meet these bands on their own terms. Some are more difficult than others (Primus, for example) but I typically want to find something positive about each song.
To answer what you asked at the end specifically, this isn't too far off from their usual sound. I have many many bands I like but aren't obsessed with and Archspire's one. Love em enough for them to be on my phones sd card, but honestly i only have like 5 of their tracks where as bands like Opeth, Leprous, Tesseract, Porcupine Tree, and others i have the full discography. I've always been into the brutal stuff but it's not like my blood and soul. I've grown up just as fondly of Rush, King Crimson and Pink Floyd. So to get to my point is I can only gauge bands by what I like, and i really can do without some of their stuff.. but when they hit the mark, they really hit it with perfection and the technical death metal scene was really in need of someone to fill the gap left by Necrophagist. The Faceless came close but a lot of the scene turned their backs on the man behind it.
Maybe checkout "Lucid Collective Somnambulation" Otherwise they have a playthrough video of "Human Murmuration". That one's pretty cool too.
Lucid hands down is one of their nest
If we're looking for longer songs, check out "Caligula's Horse - Graves". Awesome current prog metal band.
Famous last words - The show must go on
Great review
I believe this was recorded at Dave Otero's studio (Cattle Decapitation, etc. record there). He's a fucking genius. Quality recording.
Your Disposal by Cattle Decapitation. I think it's fantastic
4:02 "I was kinda hoping for that to kinda evolve a little bit" he says while he's evolving a little bit xD
Random recommendation. Well, kinda cos I was searching for the song to see how it's played and decided to click on your video. I think I must check other of your videos. Already subbed lol. I don't usually subscribe so fast (after watching just one video). :))
Thanks for the sub and I hope you find some other videos enjoyable as well.
@@CriticalReactions I'm still just a beginner and struggle to pick up on what's going on in the songs, so reactions like these help with that. :)
New subscriber here! I love this band with all my heart lol. Golden Mouth of Ruin is stunning too. Oli the vocalist sites Tech N9ne as a major vocal influence.
Totally not asking for a reaction of Human Sadness by The Voidz.
Also:
-Children of Bodom by Children of Bodom;
-In the Halls of Awaiting by Insomnium;
Cheers and continue the excelent reviews!!
If you want a little break from all of the more extreme metro stuff, I would love to see you react to Good Tiger. A good song to react to would be “Float On”
Totally brutal and technically out of this world. Another band you could possibly check, and become a fan, is Zenith Passage, I recommend the songs "Holographic Principle" or "Deus deceptor".
I've seen them live sounds just like the record they are not human!
Bang on comparing the vox to rap. He started off as a rapper.
Who told you that? Lol no he didn't
@@spencerprewett9005 ok so I've gotten mixed up.
I was sure I had seen an interviews where he talked about adapting techniques he'd picked up rapping and then shifted them over to death metal.
Where it seems it was actually "from rap" rather than initially doing it himself.
On one of the vox playthoughs he talks about you [if this is actually you spencer] showing him tech n9ne as examples of the speed and cadence you were looking for. Maybe this his where I've gotten turned around on it.
Cheers for the correction.
Yess, I was surprised that homeboy, correctly assumed the rap influence. That's how I knew he was REALLY listening lol
@@spencerprewett9005 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@INFERIOfficial Damn we got Spencer and Inferi in here LMAO
For Tech Death it is actually very accessible imho. If you're trained to listen to such music of course. I think its one of the best Tech Death albums in recent times. The more you listen to it, the more the songs and the album itself get cohesive. You have to do some listening work for it, to get the idea behind it. I understand not all people are willing to do so. But I love it (=
He has a few vocal videos talking about his rap influences.
I hope you'll check out their new single "Golden Mouth of Ruin". It's insane. 🤘
It's interesting what you say about the vocalist. I'm no expert on this band, but I've heard he's done a ton of work using "speed rapping" techniques to get all those words out. It's certainly interesting. I've always found extreme metal vocals interesting. Death metal and Tuvan throat singing are the two vocal styles that use laryngeal constriction. I'm glad you're able to at least find this interesting. A lot of people dismiss it out of hand, which is wrong I think.
Also still waiting for dir en grey macabre live at tabula rasa. Progressive masterpiece with insane production. Their sound guy live does an incredible job
I'm still trying to work out the logistics of doing a 6th and 7th video each week but once I do I'll be revisiting bands weekly. DeG is at the top of the list for that.
I would absolutely love to see a great mass of death by septic flesh! I think you’d like it as a composer. The writer of the album graduated with honors and distinction in composition! This was the first album he wrote after graduating I believe and it was recorded with a live orchestra. Honestly I’d recommend the whole album but if I had to pick a single song that one or the vampire of Nazareth!
My congrats for the way you analyze your thoughts through your own experience, knowledge and understanding of music composition , I really enjoy it. Also in my opinion, the first album of Archspire has better ideas in it...songs like Lucid collective somnambulation, Join us beyond, Fathom Infinite Depth, Scream feeding.....so if you want to explore their music deeper, check them out.
This guy seems like he's very into proggy genres, so it makes sense why metal music that masturbates the almighty riff would be less interesting to him that music with perhaps more experimental passages (for the genre of the song in question) and those slick transitions. Nice to hear his reaction though, I didn't think of how clean the production needed to be for music like this to sound palatable! Also for those who really like Archspire, watch the lyric video on 0.75 or 0.5 speed. The vocalist's enunciation is incredible, and I think he has a few moments of syncopation that are really slick.
You must hear the new album of Exocrine!!! Is like a crazy combination of Archspire, Rings of Saturn and The Faceless (maybe another bands like Virvum, Fallujah, Irreversible Mechanism btw)
Listen to the track: "Remote Void" by the band Wormed
The vocalists biggest inspiration is tech n9ne so you are spot on
Would love to see you react to Drewsif Stalin work like :
- Anhedonia part 1 or 2
- Bereft
- Ruin
This guy has a really distinctive sound, nice time signatures and great vocal harmonizations, pretty sure you'll enjoy listening to him
I wonder what your take is on some modern hardcore like Code Orange- Forever or Vein - Virus/Vibrance
I checked out Code Orange but it ended up getting blocked. Here is a GDrive link to watch it: drive.google.com/open?id=1BjTgHVqaqAbYlpZNEsPK3vYZpK5uA5Cu
@@CriticalReactions Great, Thanks!
I suppose, many think of people who dig this as sensation-seekers. That may be the case to some degree. But if you really manage to get into the flow it is just awesome (and pretty relaxing, too).
Archspire is hard and brutal, that's just what they do. These guys are friggin awesome. If you looking for a more melodic deathtek sound try Beyond Creation. They are still very technical, and hard but I would say a bit more melodic. My first suggestion would be Earthborn Evolution
I checked them out a couple of weeks ago, listened to the song Omnipresent Perception. czcams.com/video/MgEYQ5I4Afc/video.html
Our pride and joy 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Stay Tech 🤘🤘🤘
Fathom infinite depth is also so good
When Oli (the vocalist) joined the band he studied rappers to get his rapid rhythmic vocal delivery.
I recommend check out Dissection where the dead angles lie black metal you're gonna love that.
I know it's not really pertinent to Archspire, but I'd really love to see you react to one of Moonsorrow's epics. Think viking metal with a progressive flair, composed like a symphony. They have these 15, 18, 30 minutes monster songs that just fly, and I really would like to know how they manage to do it. Something like Pimea or Mimisbrunn or Jotunheim. Pleeeeease!
You're on point. There are videos where he talks about how he is influenced by rap. There are vocal playthrough videos slowed down where it shows he's actually pronouncing every word perfectly - that fast. A lot of his growls are actually inhaling too. The whole band is incredibly talented, even if its a little hard to listen to.
Inhaling growls? I might have to watch one of these playthroughs and see his technique.
Conducting from the Grave.. any song from the when legends become Dust album.. you'll love it!
You really should check out the album Gammageddon from Cytotoxin. One of the best songwriting I've ever heard in Technical Death Metal.
this guy is the John Snow of composers :D god reaction, interesting comments, thanks
If you’re interested into good bass stuff, their last album might catch up you attention.
Love your attention on details and keep it up.
He is acting like he don't know about Archspire. I could bet that he is in the first row of their concert. Dude is headbanger as! 😊🤗
It's kinda cool I give off that impression but I have seriously never heard of this band prior to starting this channel.
You should definitely try listening to E-an-na, it's a Romanian folk metal band and they do a really great job. They combine many instruments and sounds, as well as ideas and folkloric elements of the Romanian culture. Some of their best work-> "Aer" and "Pielea", i think these two can represent what they really are.
You should check out a song called watercolour by Pendulum. I really curious to hear your thoughts on this group as they mix rock with drum & bass with electronic elements
Human Murmuration is one of their better songs you should check that song out
I recommend the new Rings of Saturn album. Literally any song. All mind blowing. The last one is instrumental if that's more your thing.
Definitely wouldn't use "mind blowing".
@@MrNocturnalseve good for you
Hi! Listen to Le serment de tsion by First Fragment. It's short and a masterpiece.
LOL, watching your eyes as you're trying to read the lyrics in real time.
Human Murmuration is a great one to critique
Stuff like this is composed on a computer screen, so no surprise there are jarring "transitions" - cut and paste parts and sections.
I'd love to see a reaction to igorrr's "tendon" or really, an song from igorrr. They have a very unique style
I've checked out their song "ieuD" if you want to check that out: czcams.com/video/UC_zCXFKYdg/video.html
@@CriticalReactions thanks! I definitely want to! Though i think tendon is a bit different to ieud. Anyway, you do great work that is appreciated!
I'm sure plenty of people have recommended before but you should check out Mastodon. It's not necessarily insane, but well organized imo
I applaud the praise with the caveat. You put it best saying its amazing but can be hard to listen to.
Good review! Heres some more songs to recommend:
Behemoth - of Fire the the Void
American Head Charge - Just so you Know
Mushroomhead - Solitaire Unraveling
Beyond Creation - Omnipresent Perception
i can barely read the lyrics lol the part after the atmospheric guitars is just a killer =)
Could you react to either Chromatic Chimera or Mechanical Phoenix by the band UneXpect?
Please react to Fossil Genera or the live DVD performance of Extremophile Elite by Between the Buried and Me
Okay hot damn bud great call.
You should react to vitalism and berried alive, I don't think anyone has done that yet, but they are easily on par with archspire(personally even better)
"Just this section and this section"
Did anyone else think about math rock when he said that?
Anyway, the rest of the songs in the album aren't too different from this one, some might be more melodic or have their own interesting ideas, but there's not a huge change. Their older stuff is the same, but slower.
And if you end up listening to them again as a reaction or put of CZcams, pay a little bit more of attention to the drummer, notice how dynamic his playing is, in terms of he doesn't stick to the se idea even inside a single section.
This. band has some of the fastest songs I listened to
This is a decent example of most of their songs, but a few stand out. Try A Dark Horizontal from the same album.
STAY TECH 🤘
With metal this extreme literal message of the lyrics is way less important than aggression and rhytmic value provided. It's not everyone's cup of tea - I get it but once you make the realisation and let go of habitual expectations listening to disgusting growls and brutal shit in general gets more enjoyable IMHO.
riverside - left out
Archspire is the best doing it right now hands down - Soreption and Viscera are close too
Rings of Saturn please
I genuinely believe this band to be in the highest ranks of metal. This album is my jam. One of the guitarists, Dean Lamb, has a CZcams channel and streams his setlist on Twitch frequently. Czech it out! czcams.com/users/Luckbard12
