      @@duckstabed7381 It's good but in the plethora of metal that's been released since 30 years ago I guarantee if you looked you'd find better.
      There's always a group of people who find something they like listen to it endlessly for decades and then rail about no good music these days.
      The real truth is there's more good metal music released in the past decade as there was in the 30 years prior to that. Not only due to sheer quantity of music produced but also advances in production, composition, experimentation, gear, talent etc.
      Whenever I see someone saying this is the best Yada Yada and it's 30 years old it's most likely not objectively true.

    When brothers Max and Iggor Cavalera formed Sepultura in Brazil in 1984, they could barely play as teens and learned as they played gigs and recorded extreme metal music... They were one of the early death metal bands. Max Cavalera (vocals/ rhythm guitar) played riffs w/ 4 strings and Iggor Cavalera (drums) learned to play from the streets. The addition of Jairo Guedz (lead guitar) and live bassist Paulo Jr. resulted in the EP 'Bestial devastation' in 1985... followed by the full album 'Morbid visions' in 1986. Their early influences were early Metallica, early Slayer, Celtic Frost/ Hellhammer, Venom, etc...
    When Sepultura relocated to Sao Paulo from Belo Horizonte, they split w/ guitarist Jairo and replaced him w/ Andreas Kisser (lead guitar) who made an impact on their 1987 album 'Schizophrenia'... By 1988, their records had been released in Brazil only and were being imported to Europe and N. America. Sepultura got label interest and signed to Roadrunner Records in 1989.
    Producer Scott Burns (who produced most of the Florida death metal bands in the early to mid 90's from Cannibal Corpse to Deicide) worked on 2 Sepultura albums - 'Beneath the remains' (1989) and 'Arise' (1991) as Sepultura toured Europe and N. America and became one of the most promising international bands.
    In 1993, Sepultura opted to go for a new sound w/ more groove (like Pantera) and Brazilian influences on the album 'Chaos A.D.' and it eventually sold gold in the US (half million copies) - their most successful album. But there was a disconnect between Max Cavalera and the band after he and wife Gloria Cavalera (who managed the band) moved to Phoenix, Arizona while the rest of Sepultura stayed in Brazil.
    Their 1996 album 'Roots' was Sepultura's homage to tribal music in Brazil and heralded the beginnings of 90's 'nu metal' sound... it also eventually sold gold in the US and charted worldwide.
    Unfortunately, it was the last record to feature Max Cavalera... he left Sepultura after his wife Gloria's contract to manage the band were not renewed in 1996... His brother Iggor Cavalera left Sepultura in 2006 and he reunited w/ Max in the band Cavalera Conspiracy (or simply Cavalera)
    Max Cavalera formed the band Soulfly and released their nu metal debut album in 1998. It was Soulfly's only gold record in the US... People expected Soulfly to find the same level of success as the classic Sepultura... but that did not happen. Soulfly did release some stellar records like 'Primitive' (2002)... '3' (2002)... 'Prophecy' (2004)... etc. but endured a number of line-up changes.
    Some Soulfly songs - 'Back to the primitive' ... 'Eye for an eye' ... 'Prophecy'... 'Carved inside'...
    In 1998, Sepultura returned w/ new vocalist Derrick Green and released the album 'Against' (1998)... but the fans were upset and the album undersold... They still recorded some stellar records like 'Dante XXI' in 2006... 'A-Lex' in 2009... etc. But they had to fight the stigma for decades that Sepultura without Max or Iggor Cavalera was not Sepultura.
    Some later Sepultura songs - 'Sepulnation' ... 'Against' ... 'Kairos' ... 'Isolation' ... 'Come back alive'.

His innovative style in the album Chaos A.D. brought tribal elements (along with Brazilian rthytms as samba and axé) into the songs. One classic example of his contribution to extreme music is the introduction of the song "Territory".

    Many thrash bands slowed down and went to a more groove heavy route. Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax all did it. Grunge was hurting them. Not as much as it did hairmetal though. Roots was the last album to have both Cavalera brothers. Max(vocals, guitar) left in 1996 with his brother Igor(drums) leaving in 2006. In my opinion, they haven’t been the same. “No Cavalera, No Sepultura!”

    Saw them on the Arise tour. First metal concert I went to, barely into my teens. A few security guards started roughing up people who fell into the pit, Max Cavalera swung his BC Rich at one of the security guards, a fight ensues, it eventually dies down, they go back up into the stage and do a really, really pissed off cover of "Policia" by brazilian punk band "Ratos de Porão". As the adults with me dutifully got the hell out of there, riot police were being called into the venue. "So this is metal shows", I thought.

    • @thegrimner
      @thegrimner Před 5 dny +2

      And yes, their 80s/early 90s albums were somewhere one the very heaviest spectrum of thrash, borderline touching on death metal tendencies. Chaos A.D. is at once groovier but also, there's a lot of punk/hardcore influence thrown into the mix. Max used to say in interviews that he had a favourite tape in his youth that had Celtic Frost's Morbid Tales on one side and Discharge's "Protest and Survive" on the other. This being the times before the internet, he had no idea what they looked like, and thought it was all the same genre, even though Celtic Frost are very much a Thrash Metal band and Discharge are considered Punk/Hardcore.
      Roots marks an even bigger change, both by flirting with the sort of groove present in Nu Metal, but also by adding a lot of brazilian tribal percussion and vibes. It's the last album with their "classic" lineup, which had been pretty much unchanged until that point.

    Man, I really love this band. Even if I don´t enjoy their groove/nu metal stuff, specially after Max Cavalera (guitars and vocals) left, but I still recognize the importance of Chaos AD and most importantly, Roots.
    Their first album is kind of blackened death/thrash(?, they were like 16 at the time and didn´t even speak english properly. Max wrote the lyrics in portuguese and then used a dictionary to translate. It is not a bad album per se, but you can tell that a bunch of teens with no money did the best they could with what they had. In fact, recently, the Cavalera brothers (Max and Igor on drumms) re-recorded their first EP and their first two albums. Morbid Visions definitelyneeded that treatment.
    The band really showed all it had once Andreas Kisser joined in in guitars. Schizophrenia, even if it still has a pretty raw production (fixed in the just released re-recording, even tho I honestly still prefer the rawness of the og) is an amazing thrash album. The riffs and song structures really stand out. Lyrics start to get better as well. Max and Andreas were an amazing guitar duo, they complemented each other so perfectly and imo, niether Max nor Andreas have sounded better ever again.
    Beneath the Remains is my fav Sepultura album, and probably top 3 metal album oat. Fun and interesting riffs and ryhtm changes along with creative song structures and amazing lyrics. Honestly. I think Beneath the Remains is pretty much perfect when it comes to thrash. And remember, they were still 19-20 when they did this. I don´t need to say more, album speaks for itself honestly.
    Arise is also pretty good. Amazing way to close their thrash era. I feel it is more accesible than BtR or Schizo and because of that in some parts it kind of looses some charm in certain aspects, but it´s still an amazing album. Sepultura´s rythm changes shine the most in this album. So seamless sometimes you miss the briliance of them. Lyrics still going strong. But you can tell it´s the beginning of their change in sound. Subtle, but the clues were there.

    @メシャ Před 5 dny +1

    Awesome reaction as always!
    For some context, Sepultura started playing a very dirty, fast, aggressive brand of metal that would be the precursor to thrash, death, and black metal. Starting from Chaos A.D. they switched to a more groove oriented sound and began to include inspiration from traditional ethnic brazilian music, peaking in Roots.
    As you well noticed, their earlier albums up to Arise are tuned to E standard, Chaos A.D. is tuned to D standard, and Roots is tuned all the way down to B standard. You've got good ears!
    They retained the same formation until 1996, when the rhythm guitarist and singer Max left the band, followed by the drummer Igor in 2006.
    For the next Sepultura reaction i recommend Mass Hypnosis, Territory, Ratamahatta and Attitude from the classic albums (Ratamahatta completely blew my mind the first time i heard it, it still does!), and i also really recommend Isolation, Means To An End and Autem from their latest album Quadra! Their "new" vocalist Derrick is a monster, and Eloy, the drummer in that album, is also a beast!
    Lastly, since you seem to really like groove and breakdowns, i also recommend Shadow Moses by Bring Me The Horizon, Flying Whales and Born For One Thing by Gojira (they are pretty heavy so beware!) and Domination by Pantera if you haven't listened to it yet, to see how you like those bands :)

    Side note, it should be noted that the production on the Beneath The Remains album was a Cornerstone in actually having record labels and Engineers take seriously this kind of music. The engineers on Beneath The Remains and the cleaner approach to the kick drums and all that kind of stuff taking the production into a more modern level of technicality and attention to detail.... was a formative Cornerstone in all the bands from florida, in the 90s and I'm referring to dsi, obituary,, atheist, Morbid Angel and many many many many many more all working from Morristown Studios because they were ahead of the curve in terms of making this music understandable to the listener.

    On all these Songs Igor Cavalera played the drums. Max Cavalera left the Band after Roots bloody Roots album during musical differences. Igor left the Band some years later. They both play together on Cavalera Conspiracy. Also Max son plays now drums in Soulfy, the band Max started after he left Sepultura.

    It is interesting that sepultura's career spends between archaic Proto black metal all the way through new metal and the current ERA, as they are indeed a legacy band with a long history. I was first made aware of them around the schizophrenia album and loved how it touched on venom, Celtic frost, metallica, a lot of stuff that I was just predisposed to dig influence wise. It's great to see you coming to this band because they are unique in the annals of extreme metal having warn their Brazilian Heritage so strongly on their sleeve for so many years and whatnot and incorporating extra percussion and all that good stuff. Cheers, absolutely love what you do and cannot wait until we get to the German thrash bands

  • @ohnoitsnotjoe
    @ohnoitsnotjoe Před 5 dny +3

    I think you should listen to Celtic Frost. I think it's a mix of all the genres you like; thrash and doom metal. The albums I recommend are Morbid Tales, To Mega Therion, and Monotheist (which is more doom metal).

    For me, the "Chaos A.D." album is the only one, where i only skip one song ("Clenched Fist"), but the rest is perfect.
    The single most perfect Sepultura song, must be "Inner Self" Under Siege Live In Barcelona 1991! And ONLY THIS version! The album one don't even come near to this one.
    They had very few good songs, after Max left the band, but they mainly died for me. Just like Queen died with Freddie.

    You need to check out Max Cavalera (He ws the one singing) Soulfly group. They mix in Nu Metal and other metal. Cavalera is another group of his with his brother the drummer you were talking about and they just rerecorded an older Sepultura album when they were still death metal it is awesome.

  • @sputhoor96

    Groove metal is when they slow down thrash and focus more on the groove. Less fast parts. The riffs also kinda become less technical as a result.
