Why The VERY WEIRD Friends Spin-Off Failed

  • The best Friends episodes all have one thing in common, the very name of the show. Whether it was Monica and Chandler, or Joey and Phoebe antics, the show was about a group of peoples lives. The spin-off of Friends, titled Joey, did not go well. The Friends moments we grew to love, were all but gone, and the show did everything it could to make everyone not want to watch it. This is a look at what went wrong.

That's what he gets for hating dogs and has to watch Joey bang his wife for the remainder of his dog days. Why is he a dog I dunno he pissed off Phoebe or destroyed Gladys or Glynnis cursing him, this occult perspective delves into Phoebe's new age religion she always seemed like a written off charmed character. Agree. Showing Monica, Rachel, Ross back in High School (where Ross develops his crush), with appearances of Phoebe (stealing Ross' bike) and perhaps accidentally even Joey as well, would have been awesome. Perhaps including College too. Concerning this is where Rachel and Monica had lost touch with each other (in a prelude to the Pilot) and we get to meet Chandler etc. It would further help creating a more organic, interesting and meaningful backstory to Ross & Rachel's arc. With the "prom video" as said example, or Ross seeing Rachel in a bikini for the first time etc.

Because of the show we figured out some of the biggest reasons sheldon the main character acted and treated and did things to other people. For example the whole engineering thing with howard, or why he ddint wanna go to caltech in the first place. But this show is diffrent from that, they need all of the members to really work. They also took the whole charatcter off of joey as well.

  • @ajaysabarish9645

In Friends everyone's arc was completed except that of Joey's.
Monica : She wanted baby, a chef career, a relationship. And she got it all at the end.
Chandler: Hated his job, wanted a partner. He got a job he loved and married a woman he loved.
Ross: He wanted to be married. He had a huge unresolved crush on Rachel. He got it all at the end.
Rachel: She wanted to be independent and not be the spoiled daddy's little girl. She was a successful executive and a responsible mother at the end.
Phoebe: She just wanted a family of her own. And she got it at the end.
But Joey neither had a stable relationship nor a successful acting career at the end. So the spinoff attempted to address it.
But the big problem was they literally forgot FRIENDS. I mean Joey was getting married and there is no mention of his friends ?
IMO, they could have ended in Season 2 with his marriage and they should have announced all his friends are coming to the wedding. The viewership would have skyrocketed and it would be a good ending.

    • @dvchel
      @dvchel Před 4 lety +166

@libby young To simply put it, the writers *never* got it that the magic ensemble of Aniston, Schwimmer, Perry, Cox, Kudrow and of course LeBlanc is what made Friends able to exist for 10 seasons and becoming so popular the way it did. Even though Friends was averaging in the number of "accolades" in comparison to other sitcoms, like Everybody Loves Raymond and the Larry Summers Show, the ratings were still far larger than many others in part of the popularity and "talent" of the cast members.
The writers thought that Friends would be able to exist without the six actors complete. And it's not the first time. Back when the actors went for a pay-raise going to $250.000 per episode, both NBC, WB and many of the producers/writers sought to exclude some of the actors and replacing them. Didn't work. They were all very professional, didn't budge and continued their work.
Last but not least, both Matt LeBlanc and Kevin Bright wanted to give Joey a fair chance at becoming a complete character. However, the plug was pulled once Joey's character kept going in the wrong direction.

They soon realized this would be a bad idea as the one liners they gave was great once or twice a show (even about to carry a few episodes over 11 years) but, every week, no. Interesting. To me it is Ross & Rachel. Their final reunion still felt hollow and forced in many ways, because of the fact that they were forcibly kept apart for 7.5 years. Referring as an example to the season 9 plot of Rachel & Joey. Knowing it just made no sense on the basis of seasons 1-7, where Rachel never showed any interest in his manners, behaviour or personality. It was Ross all the way for the most part.
And moments like season 9 are where Ross & Rachel should have slowly and steadily come back together. You know, to make the final reunion feel more organic and meaningful. I can imagine a Joey spinoff working but not the one they made. It could have been called f.a.m.i.l.y and Joey would have been a supporting character in the story of the lives of his many sisters. It would have been set around New York probably rather than LA and would have focused on the more working class lives and family structure of the tribbianis. It prob would not have worked as well as friends but it might have worked ok in a cheers>Frasier way in that it would be different and solid enough to attract an audience. Once it was established other friends cast could return for guest spots to see Joey

@TheSherBru Valid point. However, another "great" reason why it was known Joey the spin-off was going to fail beforehand was due to the flanderization of his character at the end of Friends. His was the worst out of all. He began in season 1 as a street-smart guy. Towards the end in season 10 he was in serious need of a supervisor. Compare this to the great development you saw in season 8 when Joey finally came to understand women on a different level, it was disappointing to see the writers then made the decision to dumb him down again to a person unable to speak French. These poor decisions left Joey with not much to stand on his own. His character definitely should have been written more complete by the show's end. Then again, often money and greed rules in terms of deciding that Friends wasn't enough by Warner Brothers and NBC.

@@TheSherBru Yes, but HIMYM does have a not so favorable ending in comparison to Friends. They did got the _"will they or won't they"_ paradigm between Ted and Robin better than Ross and Rachel in Friends. Not to forget the drama coming off right, whereas in Friends it was coming off cheesy very often.
After Rachel had given birth to her child with Ross by her side, millions upon millions had the desire and wanting to see these two starting to build on their relationship again. However, the creators made the decision to throw Joey in the equation because they liked playing with fire, even though it made no sense at that moment in time of Friends - what else, you get burned!
The reason why, in addition to the ending of HIMYM, it continues to amaze me how writers, producers and creators can be so out of touch with the public and what it wants. Their incompetence just left too much open for the imagination.

He said something like- we are afraid to make another season or spin- off because the level we set was so high and I am afraid that we don't fall down (something like this). Plus if they had to make a spin-off I would have liked a short film which showed all the friends a few years later together drinking coffee at central perk and talking about their day. It should have been revealed that they hung out everyday one time in central perk and were still very very close friends. And Joey would also have ended up with someone.

Joey's character never evolved from the womanizer/dumb/optimistic guy. That problem was already in Friends and carried over to Joey, that's why he couldn't be a lead. There was nothing going for him. This video failed to touch on that issue.
All the other characters had grown up by the end of the series, Joey stayed the same. It was even a recurring joke in the series, even by the end of it Joey can't deal with Chandler and Monica moving to a new house and Chandler says they got a spare room for Joey, and he gets all happy kiddy like. The show touched early on (and again a few seasons later with that girl Mon and Rach wanted Joey to date because they liked her) how he wanted to have a deeper relationship and find love, the girls left him and he went back to square one. The writers never explored that issue. Joey stayed the womanizer from the start of the series to the end of it, even though he could evolve from that.
Chandler got over his fears of serious relationships, made peace with his father. Monica got the family she always wanted and Richard didn't want to give her. Rachel became successful with her own career. Ross resolved his issues with Rachel and got back with her, which was what he always wanted. Phoebe also had the same kind of problem as Joey, she loved David but he left. She found love with Mike and settled down with him. They all started a new chapter in their lives, and Joey was put to the side.

Joey came right after the end of Friends, people were not ready to see only him without the rest of the gang, but the show was not so bad as you said actually! I kinda liked it back then and I've just started a rewatch out of curiosity cause I didn't remember much of it... it actually made me laugh more than once already! Joey is not deprissing AT ALL, the fact that he can't make friends in LA is very well explained in the show itself... It's much harder to make new friends when you're grown up and LA is very different from NY, as Joey said "In NY I could approach people in the street, here in LA everybody drives a car, how do you meet people?". I find it also logical that Joey wanted to try something different as all of his NY friends had moved on in life (got married, had kids, had the job of their dreams...) remember Monica and Chandler left the apartment at the end of the show? So why was Joey supposed not to try something different as well? He's an actor after all, it's only logical that he would try to move to LA at a certain point and see if he had any chances there. This doesn't mean that he won't go back to NY at some point or that he's not calling his friends. I think it would've have been just pathetic to have the show with him on the phone with his friends! And the fact that we don't see him calling them it doesn't mean he didn't and that he's not in touch with them anymore. Most of Friends' characters have really changed in the course of the show, while Joey was the only one who didn't evolve, didn't have a decent carrier and didn't find love. This could've been Joey's chance if only people weren't so nostalgic and narrow-minded. What I didn't like about Joey was the fact that they cast Adam Goldberg as a recurrent character when he had already played one in Friends (remember Eddie, Chandler's weird roommate?). Also Joey's look seems to be very different from Friends, why is he wearing all these shirts, trousers and shiney shoes now? Apart from that, I'm enjoying it very much at the moment and I suggest to give it a try if you can find it.

Theoretically, a spinoff about Monica and Chandler's family life would have probably been better (or at least easier to manage from a writer's perspective).
After they got together and made their relationship known to the other friends, their individual storylines started to merge and they ended up focusing on their romance and daily life rather than individual "misadventures".
Basically, they could have easily carried the weight of a show on their own because they seem more like protagonists and not simply side characters. Joey, however? He was created as a side character (like Phoebe) and was meant to stay that way.
That said, I'm glad that they didn't make another spinoff with Monica and Chandler, trying to "resuscitate" a show that is already over is 99% of the time a bad idea.

When I heard of this spinoff, I thought, "Finally! Joey's going to grow up and be more than the sidekick!" I thought about what would challenge him the most and also fit his character the most, from what we knew of him. While living in New York, he gets a phone call from a girl he'd dated for a few months. She tells him she's had a baby and it's his. He councils with his friends (cameo, like 90210 did for Melrose Place's first episode), takes a DNA test and decides to go to LA to man-up (as foreshadowed) and ask her to marry him.
She won't marry someone she barely knows, and she won't leave LA, because her single dad is there. Joey was the one to hate change the most and the least likely to leave his friends (his family), but, as hard as it is, he can't abandon his daughter/son and decides to stay. While in LA, he may as well kill two birds with one stone by also trying to improve his career and becoming successful for his child.
This concept opened so many doors for humour, warmth, tension, meaningful romance, blunders and character growth.
It was pretty disappointing that the writers threw the character under the bus, for cheap laughs.

As far as im concerned, Joey (the series) doesn't exist in the Friends lore. I think the main issue with it was this: After Monica & Chandler moved to the suburbs, I like to think that the gang still met up occasionally for a coffee. Joey, Ross, Rachel and Phoebe all still lived in the city, so they could definitely see each other regularly. But the fact that the spin-off had Joey completely leave all his closest friends and start a new life, was just completely the wrong thing to do with his character.

Honestly, I think that a spinoff about Joey could've been really good if it was done right.
Because Joey wasn't *just* a character for comedic relief and support, even if that's what he served for the original show.
He had things that could've been explored and developed on. He had issues with commitment in relationships, his potential in acting, his struggling with growing up.
The Joey spinoff could've been great if it touched on the lines of a dramedy if they kept his character intact and just fleshed out his life more instead of tearing it apart.
It might've been really entertaining to see how Joey somehow ended up in some weird conflicts that he managed to solve despite his lack of common sense, like his own subplots in some of the Friends episodes.
There could've been overarching plotlines about one or two main love interests throughout the show that made him think about settling down as he wrestled with getting older. I would've loved to see him have phone calls with Chandler and Phoebe about the things he was going through and asking for advice.
I dunno. I don't think that a Friends spinoff with Joey wasn't wanted. I just don't think it made it something people didn't know they wanted.

Joey was one of the best characters of friends, but he’s great because his friends. Take the other 5 away and he’s not good.

Great video - I am tempted to watch this if it ever streams - just to see how bad it is. It looks like they had a good supporting cast too. Its weird how they took that hard turn with the character and made him so unlikeable. Have to admire Matt Le Blanc though - I would love to have a $30 million dollar payslip for a failure!
