Why The Very Strange How I Met Your Mother Spin-Off Failed

- How I Met Your Dad, not to be confused with How I Met Your Father, was the first attempt at an attempt to recapture the magic of How I Met Your Mother. Though after seeing the Pilot for How I Met Your Dad, it's obvious even the creators of How I Met Your Mother didn't know what they were doing. Everything seemed to fall short of it's predecessor How I Met Your Mother, and test audiences unanimously agreed.

They should have focused the spinoff on Barney's character, and called it "Swarley".
Ol' Swarles! 100% on board for this limited series.
@@Nerdstalgic Swarles Barkley
A show based around barney growing as a dad and keeping up with the gang would have been amazing and that could have saved the himym ending by diving into it more and having the gang be there for him
It’s fun because “Swarley” is the exact kind of inside joke type thing he video outlines as successful in himym. It’s took years of set up of how much Barney cares about his image and how he is typically the (albeit lovable) antagonist force in the group that makes fun of the the rest of the group the most.
How I Met Your Dad tried to earn those jokes in a pilot episode.
Just name it 'Legendaddy'
It seems like the writers didn't want to make more of the same show, but somebody was going to pay them to do it so they just threw something out there.
This is most likely the reason,
After years of writing the same type shows, you get creative burn out at some point. Plus it's hard to stay creative when the previous show established the guiding principales, thus you can't deviate to far from the original source material
Big budget low creativity
It didn't help, that the writers actually hadn't always done a great job on HIMYM. After a few seasons they way they wrote Ted made him seem a total arsehole. It was carried by the other characters, especially Barney. So they weren't in prime position to create a new likeable main character when they had lost how to with their old series.
@@danielebowman the writing was good tho this shit is ass😂
You just described all the reboots and sequels in the last decade. When will Hollywood learn? Everyone can see the problem except them.
During that clip of Barney and Sophie, I just realized that Barney is now going through the same thing his hero is going through. He and Johnny Lawrence, the Karate Kid, are both single dads in a spin-off show of their original IP.
And i think thanks to Barney that(and Zapka in Himym) cobra kai happen. Ps only one last Chance for a NPH cameo in Cobra Kai!
In Karate Kid Zapkas Talent was wasted in Cobra he show what he can do with good script he is my Highlight of the Show( He was also awesome and the few how i met your Mother Episodes he was)...😊
I read that they "fixed" him in himyf, I thought they were gonna destroy his character but they made him integral to the episode.
@@owtnerdy1331 They fixed him but to his change in the end its fit.
And they can not show him how in that times...
It's a blessing in disguise that "Dad" never launched a full series, since Greta might have been too busy working on this show to direct such classics as "Ladybird" or "Little Women."
I'm glad she finally got the recognition she deserves

True, at least she went onto a steady supporting gig after the failure of this pilot.

VICKY!!!! Thanks, I couldn't remember the name! 😅
How I Met Your Father should have been based around the mother of Barney's daughter. Each episode telling stories to their daughter in the future. Revealing zany stories about Barney we never knew happened etc. IMO would have been a legen...wait for it...Dary show 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
How I met your Barney 😂
HIMYM was simply relatable. Many guys have been that Ted, had a friend the was obnoxious like barney and had a humble friend like Jason Siegel. People saw themselves in Teds experiences. The trials and pitfalls of dating. The Wonder Years was the same feeling of being young. "Dad" had no relatable aspects. Shows that suceed reflect real life. Failures are all the result of a half ass effort
Tad was one of the WORST character in TV history 😁
@@remixl6020 Yeah, Tad Swarley and Narshall were horrible
@@remixl6020 Ong Ted is easily my least favorite character from the show. He's delusional and lowkey creepy at some points.
Agree with above. Ted is trash. And the ending of HIMYM was pure trash
Almost every guy has been as stuck on a girl as Ted was with Robin (Cobie Smulders... I'd get stuck on her too). It was amazing that they got 9 seasons out of it.
Damn, I feel bad for Greta Gerwig here especially in that interview. It wasn't her fault the show was a wreck but you can totally tell it affected her.
Well…the good thing is:
10 years have since passed and it didn’t have any affect on her thriving career. She’s gone on to accomplish some major projects since and established herself as one to be taken seriously since.
Everything works out for a reason in due time for the right people. Today is the time for this reboot. We’re 10 years separated from the finale of the original and got the perfect female perspective in the form of Hilary Duff. What better person for the millennial generation? Attractive for Gen Z as well. It’s got representation and diversity and something for everyone. With the same crew attached in one form or another. Even the same director for most the episodes in both series! The writers and show-runners have a brilliant duo experienced with telling stories across generations: this is us writers.
Bays and Thomas, original creators and writers.. serve as executive producers on the reimagined narrative.
It has a very similar feel, look, taste, and hint of HIMYM. But does a great job of making it its own story; with its own characters, generation, and flare.
So there’s no better time for a “ HOW I MET…. “ story then now! It seems fresh and new again. Of course, it’ll never measure up to the original but I have that understanding and clarity. It serves as an additional bonus to HIMYM, for me.
And who wouldn’t welcome extra of something great ?
And then.. Greta has also found her own style and flare in Hollywood. I think everyone ultimately benefited in the end.
@@RWRogers Agreed. I discovered Greta in a little romantic film called "The Dish & The Spoon" and have been in love ever since. Kudos to her. I also was a huge HIMYM fan for its duration and can also agree on
HIMYF's freshness. I have not seen the second season due to no longer having Hulu but season one had just the right amount of new while encapsulating fun tropes of the old. I approve.
Except, she read the script, accepted the job and acted her part in a poorly written show.
A builder won't build a house if the blueprints are trash.
If they do accept the job, it's on them.
@@Lewiss7423 That's a poor analogy. The builders would be the writers. The blue print would be the creator(s). The actors are the people agreeing to live there because there aren't many opportunities to live elsewhere. So they take what they can get

HIMYM finale WAS actually pretty disappointing, but Milliotti (spelling?) Is always a win. So adorable in palm springs.
Yeah, they should have introduced her a few seasons before.....especially since they were going to kill her off!!!!
As someone who binged the series, I had no issue with the final season or ending. _But_ I can totally relate to those who watched it as it came out and were disappointed because that's what happened with me and Lost. I was a water cooler watcher and @#$%ing hated the final season of that show, but now I'm hearing people binging it and liking it all the way through.
Yeah. Cristin Miloti was wonderful.
@@Tsweeney12584 I LIKED HER, TOO!!!! I was into Cobie Smulders until she married/pro created that dork!!!!!
I don’t get the hype. She’s pretty mid to me, but I see a lot of people heralding her as the greatest thing ever. To each their own I guess
I think not having Cristin Milioti involved as the main character was the first miss. Should have had some tie in - having her be in the same places as Ted, but her perspective would have given the show roots in the classic it was trying to borrow the name from. It would have allowed the audience to be invested. Plus cameos from the original cast would have been more heartfelt
THIS. But they planned to kill her off from the beginning.
I can forgive that. I cannot forgive 2 seasons wasted on a wedding that ends in a quickie, impulsive divorce 5 minutes after we saw the vows. It was sloppy writing toward the end and a shame because the journey was great.
Exactly
I agree I'd love to see her side of the story
I didn't even know there was gonna be a spinoff called how u met your dad
😂😂😂 now that's nostalgic 😅😅😅
Same
Ditto, not many people do, but maybe it's just as well that it never received a full series!
How is it nostalgic if you didn't knew about it ?
or is it nerdstalgic
That's not surprising given they only made an unaired pilot.
Huh i found it interesting that they go with the "Dad" title first instead of just going with the "father" title
HIMYM is too special to replicate I think even how I met your father doesn't do it correctly. I think people underestimate how special that original cast really was. I don't think there will ever be as good a sitcom cast as that again.
Also HIMYM did something very simple in the first episode, Marshal proposes and Ted accidentally says ily to a girl and everyone's reaction is the same as the viewers it was an amazing way to force a connection with the audience early on and I think both these spin offs miss the mark
I rewatch HIMYM after watching some episodes of HIMYFather. The level of mastering story-telling, the funny jokes, the layers of content, the charm of every character, the iconic catchphrases,… in HMIYM is totally on another level, it’s LEGEN….wait for it….DARY.
How I Met Your Mother was a cool, one-off premise that ran too long and outsmarted itself into a stinker of a finale. No one should have tried to spin off the concept. They should have just backed away slowly.
Haven't seen it, but is there a chance that the writers might have forgotten how they started their hit show and wrote this pilot like they would have written another episode of their show that was already established? Like they were trying to recreate something they knew worked but instead of starting at the beginning they tried to just write like they would have for that other show where history and context had already been established over years of running and therefore they totally missed the mark.
This makes a lot of sense….
If they gave it a chance I’m sure it would’ve found it’s footing & been way better than HIMYF
If that was the case they would have been completely detached from reality after working on the show for so long. I wouldn't hold it past them
ya if they wrote it like that a smart thing would of been to have the old gang there and run into all these new ppl some how and just let it roll from there , ted could a been a professor near bye seeing him once in awhile or u see marshal giving one of the cast a break as a judge and such robin on billboards as the news anchor of new york barney the face of some crazy company lol etc etc connect it to the world
Wasn't Brooklyn Nine-Nine out back then and that series is amazing.

Okay
Carter and Thomas had time to conceptualize HIMYM and it was basically a passion project for them. In my opinion the spin-off, like any other cash grabs by networm execs was a rash decision. Now, I don't know what happened behind the scenes, but isn't it that when a show ends, they usually get scripts either from an old junk pile or a new pitch. Probably they didn't like anything (maybe a few months before the end or at least a year while the show was about to wrap up they started searching) so they tasked Carter and Thomas to see if they can do a spin-off, which was likely rushed.
I mean it does happen, look at what happened to Conan. He never expected to be a host after Dave left, he was asked to be a writer (he was still with the simpsons then) but when the due date was nearing he was asked to show up for a test screening and we all know what happened. It was a spur of the moment decision.
Now in that case, thank god it worked, but most of the time it doesn't. Case in point ☝️
Should be rush but rash fits in this situation
So that's what Greta Gerwig looks like. I didn't even know _How I Met Your Dad_ was a thing. I wonder if that one episode is still canon to the HIMYM universe, or if it's a separate timeline.
So I didn't hallucinate that, good
I'm so glad Greta has found enormous success as a director. She's so talented
I think the reason why How i met your dad is not a good success like HIMYM because HIMYM is nostalgic for a lot of us now even after the terrible ending of the show but still it’s a show that reminds you of a lot of years and memories of your life so it’s hard to accept a new sitcom you feel like it’s just a bad copy of the original sitcom..
also a lot of ppl till this day they see HIMYM for the first time and love it so HIMYM is not old enough to be replaced by another show
I think I watched 1 1/2 episodes of that show. The main characters were extremely crass. I was a fan of How I met your mother, and the characters in that show were likable. Barney was the only slime ball and NPH played him so well he was also likable.
Based on this video, it seemed every character wanted to be the OTT one ala Barney and that got old quick
How were you able to watch more than one episode when it never got past the pilot? I think you’re thinking of the newer show.
@@TheBlueLink3 Yes, I'm thinking of "How I met Your Father"! LOL The show was so bad, I hadn't even noticed the difference in the name! I hadn't heard of the "Dad" show, and assumed it was the show I saw. TY for the correction.

Thankfully it did because if it had been a success, we may have lost out on a lot of Gerwig’s genius.
I think th ebiggest reason why it was never going to do well is that it was too soon after How I met your Mother that fans of the show would have been expecting it to be a retelling from the Mothers point of view. Considering this show was announced before Season 7 of How I met your mother. And the cast was announced two weeks before the finale of How I met your mother all but confirming that the story wasn't not in continuity with the Original.
and then the ending of How I met your mother happened that pissed off alot of fans.
Pissed off a lot of dumb fans that didn't actually understand the plot of the show.*
@@Parker-- Agreed. I confess, I did not like the final season when it aired, but now that I recently watched it again, I enjoyed it massively.
I realised, the biggest problem back in the day was that you only saw 1 episode per week, so the whole Barney/Robin wedding seemed to go on for an eternity. Then it all felt like rushing to an end in the final episode.
Now that I was able to watch 1 episode per DAY and knew that the idea of the final season was to have everything happen in 3 days (which is/was groundbreaking for a sitcom), I was able to really enjoy the ride and understand where the story was going to from the very first episode.
It’s because it was trash
There is nothing charming about Ted and Robin's relationship by the end. We climbed the mountain to accept barney and Robin as a good match, only to have it wiped out an episode later. Same goes for meeting the mom, years of buildup to have her killed off in a 15 second scene. No happy endings for anyone and at that point I couldn't care less if Robin and Ted were "together".

I would have pitched a How I Met Your Dad story where at first it looks like the mother is telling the story to her kids about her friends and and how she met this nice guy, let's say his name is Jim, but theeeeen right at the end of the pilot the mother revealed that while this Jim is indeed her kids' dad, the big twist is that the female protagonist that we've been following in the story is actually their aunt Helen, and Jim have yet to meet the mother. So the story is structured kind of similar to How I Met Your Mother, but from the perspective of the mother instead. And the kicker is that in the finale, if it goes on to be a series, the mother who is narrating is not her kids' biological mother. Their real mother was Helen who died after telling the narrator to take care of her kids and husband.
@@sentientartificialintelligence maybe you should read my comment again. Jim would have kids with Helen some time later in the series, where he would then already have met the narrator. Then Helen dies and Jim marries the narrator. It's basically almost the same story as How I Met Your Mother if it was told through the perspective of Robin, but while How I Met Your Mother was about a father telling his kids about the woman that he wants to go back to after his wife died, this time the story is about a woman telling her adoptive children about their actual mother whom they never met and how her relationship with their mother and her eventual husband came to be.
I remember auditioning for this show, script was crazy
Barney carried the whole show, I agree writing was good but without NPH's charisma the show would've fallen flat
This existed too?
I remember being really stoked about the news for this show cuz I was an avid HIMYM fan & I had LOVED everything I'd seen from Greta Gerwig (didn't hurt that she had at that point starred in two films from one of my fave directors; ESP loving Francis Ha)
It's possible they decided to reveal the dad from the start to avoid the same issue the original show bumped into after revealing the mother at the end of season 8 that annoyed many fans.
Thank you for your importent Work. Videos Like yours are hard to watch and this is so importent.
Please keep doing your stuff

It's a bit ironic how the how i met your dad pilot and the actual first episode of how i met your father are really alike. HIMYF at first is also rather messy, with the whole group meeting each other in one night, and then them hanging out as if they've spent years knowing each other.
however, HIMYF is actually getting better and I'm looking forward for it to stand on its own, and like others said, the fact that HIMYD wasn't greenlit led Greta Gerwig to do her own thing in movies.
I have to agree with that test audience - Greta Gerwig’s delivery of the Carter/Thomas material drops like a lead balloon. I’m sure she’s very talented, this just wasn’t a fitting role for her.
They just need Barney. He can turn anything funny.
Yeah without NPH it just doesn't have that zing to it. For the male audience
This is a nice one, can't wait for the other oldies😊 Maybe a disection of some old hits as well?
The backdoor pilot in HIMYM should have been the version they went with
This gives me extra appreciation for HIMYF, it’s similar to HIMYM but feels different enough that it doesn’t feel a carbon copy. They for instance put more emphasis on the drama, which was a smart way to distinguish the show from its parent.
Yes!! I love HIMYF. They brought great elements in from HIMYM but it’s still it’s own thing. I hope they renew for a third season.
I recently binged HIMYM for the first time and man was season 9 pointless and the series finale 👎🏾 but overall it was amazing
To me one of the only saving graces of season 9 was William Zabka who is absolutely brilliant in Cobra Kai
@@stephendexheimer7914 yeah it took what 20 episodes just to get to the wedding just to find out they were divorced and 9 seasons to meet the mom just for her to die and Ted end up with robin

The ending being Barneys weddings
Zabka was the only good thing in s9. Okay the mother was great. But all the we saw her die. And we get 20 episodes of the wedding 3-4 seaspn focous on them , tgen Barney and Robin spilt!
Never even heard of this show until I saw the thumbnail for this video.
I'll never find another person who loved the HIMYM finale no matter how hard I try
I don't mind Tracey dying and like that Ted got together with Robin, so I might fit your description. However, I hate everything about Barney's ending from using the most disturbing tactics to win over Robin, marrying Robin, divorcing Robin after half an episode for no reason to randomly getting a baby.
This seems really similar to how I met your father as well. I watched the first few episodes and rly didn’t give me a reason for caring about any of the characters, the jokes made me feel like I was watching a Disney show, and none of the characters felt real. Idk if that changes later in but I didn’t see a reason to watch more
I felt like first season was finding itself but season 2 has been great so far
the opening of how I met your mother featured a picture taken of the group..I wanted them to find out the person who took the picture was the mother..but no one thought of that (but I did)
It wasn't just the writers that made How I Met Your Mother so good. The cast was gold. They were amazing and they had such good chemistry with each other. Magic like that can't be so easily recreated.
I...don't even think I knew this existed. Amazing
I remember watching this a few months before watching how i met your father, and actually prefering it
I don't think that making characters relatable, although extremely important, is the main reason for the success of a sitcom. Seinfeld and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia comes to mind as examples, the very core of both the shows is creating self-absorbed, despicable abnormal characters, that in no way can be relatable to anyone. Sometimes things just happen, shows become successful because they tried something new, and more often than not people don't know what they want so how would the network studios!
In any case, I really liked the critique of putting rushed in "zany antics" in the show.
Well how i met yr father full 1st season also felt like this pilot...but starting of the 2nd season, like episode 2, really felt like home...its started slow but now im starting to looking forward to it..
I want a spin off focusing on Barney dealing with his teenage daughter!! It would be amazing.
The irony... This all applies perfectly to How I Met your FATHER, the only main difference is Hillary Duff's likeability, but somehow the new show is worse adding totally unnecesary characters to the core of the show and the super short season format of streaming that doesn't fit sitcoms
Actually season 2 of How I Met Your Father will have 20 episodes, doubling the episode count from season 1 and having more than most comedy shows now. It does have its flaws, but if it gets renewed for another 20 episode third season, its episode count won't be one of them, especially when you factor in how short debut seasons o somef popular sitcoms are (The Office US and Parks and Rec both had 6 episodes).
second season has improved tremendously
I thought the same. A lot of what the characters do is very unlikeable actually.
I don’t think anything can come close to the original series, himyf is ok but leaves more to be desired.
@@the_bottomfragger I don't agree actually.
Why is Santino there?😊
The spinoff everyone wanted was also called HIMYM, and it was Barney telling a bunch of pissed off dudes about his one night stands with their mothers.
Holy Shit. Cheetoh Santino!
Dude I thought the same santino!!!
They could have made the ringtone type of thing work by stealing her phone using a “what’s that song” app. While she’s sitting at the bar she puts her phone closer and closer trying to make her phone pick up the song and the guys she’s supposed to be talking to turning and realizing her phone is right in his face and then they have some romantic moment. I saw like 20 things they could have done in this pilot and it’s weird show phoned in it felt. The actors seems like they could have made a great crew but I think the “best friend” could have been the lead honestly, she’s funny and she’s more relatable in her delivery.
HIMYM really is one of the most confusing shows I know. It was so beloved, so popular and it was basically everywhere when I was younger.
Then they dropped the finale, and it just vanished. All my friends who used to re-watch the show stopped and beside a few memes the show just went away.
They killed it with the ending. And I do believe that is also a detriment to any spinoff. Just knowing something is connected to HIMYM immediately makes me wonder if it’s worth my time and it basically creates big hurdle for that IP to clear in just 1 episode.
Add to that some not so great storytelling and there isn’t any shock that this spinoff was a flop.
Poor Santino, he's so underrated
HIMYM is just so nostalgic. I don't think anything can top it off. And about that ending of HIMYM I feel like it was just rushed. It felt right but it was just rushed

I think either, they added the photo of the dad in the pilot when they put it online when it was not picked up, or they would have rotated the person in the picture from episode to episode.
HIMYFather has really gotten a lot better this second season and I hope that continues after the break.

I feel like all of these criticisms also apply to how I met your father. It is so terrible.
Agreed
@Nerdstalgic I tried watching it, had it not been for Robin and Barney making an appearance I'd have given up on it. Some episodes not as funny as others others tried too hard to be like the original some weren't worth watching.
Like HIMYM I gave the series a chance because it's how HIMYM was slow and it progressed to what the show is.
I slogged through the first season because of Josh Peck.. but turned off the season 2 premiere after about 5 minutes. It's just not a good show.
I like it
season1 is bad. season 2 i feel gradually improves over the course of 11 episodes
i think one of the most stupid decisions in How I Met Your Father was reintroducing the fact that two of the main characters live right above mclaren's pub when one of those characters owns a bar somewhere completely different
i like it, because it allows them to keep including maclarens as a set (and potentially other cameos) without overusing nostalgia from the first show to pander to the audience. the show is actually getting pretty good in season 2 ngl

i feel really bad for greta gerwig, but it's a blessing in disguise. if this show took off (if they did it right and were actually into it), then she wouldn't have time for directing bec sitcoms go a long way even if for a few seasons. she was made for directing and look how much appreciation she's receiving for barbie this year.
How I met your dad would be awesome if it was using Tracy's POV with her group of friends, they could even give little "easter eggs" with this new group crossing paths with the HIMYM gang but never really interacting until Ted and Tracy really get together.
Maybe if it had been given time to develop it might have worked a little bit better. Like I feel How I met your father has found it’s footing more in the second season
Why would someone try to replicate the same exact format of How I Met Your Mother? Those guys catched lightning in a bottle, why try to do the same thing again?
They explained in this video: to get an audience quickly without much explanation.
In other words, to make money fast without much effort.
The same reason they had shows like Buddies and other blatant cheesy rip-off of Friends back in 1995.
2:16 "at the time unknow Drew Tarver" ... Yeah, he is such a star now...right?
I can already imagine the future spin offs:
How I met your grandmother
How I met your grandad
How I met your aunty
Etc
Honestly, seeing this, I am genuinely happy about the effort they put into How I Met Your Father, even if most people do already consider it a bust after season 1.
It's so terrible that no one even talks about it
If that's "effort" they do in it, then tv really is dead
@@ninjanibba4259 it's at least a lot more bearable than the earlier attempt and at times genuinely attempts similar jokes to himym, they just fall flat primarily because the whole structure always feels derivative of the original as opposed to being it's own thing or a true continuation...
@@rice_frying_shrimp that should tell you the state of comedy these days, it's a complete failure and more episodes doesn't change that, this isn't cable tv where things get cancelled cuz the ratings are low, streaming will order more episodes cuz it keeps the network popular, a deal is made and that's how it sells
It means nothing, especially when no one is watching
@@ninjanibba4259 “these days” pal HIMYM started almost 20 years ago
@@tanner4280 and it's still relevant which proves my point
If they did a spin off where it went to the story of the mother in how I met your mother, then it would have been legendary. The writing would have been mildly restrained and it would have a finite point and be amazing.
Short sweet and to the point ❤
I wasn't even aware that a pilot for such spin-off even existed...
It’s sad how drastically New Girl dropped the ball towards the end out of nowhere
I wasn’t surprised the original attempt failed miserably.
TINO!!! Didn’t know he was in it lol
The how I met your mother is legendary though. You can’t even compare them.
