I came home December of '89, a little drunk, flopped down and turned on Letterman. He introduces this band and after they played this song I was like "Holy Fuck!" Great band.
This Animal Logic appearance on Letterman is absolutely perfect. Deborah's voice is spot on ... mixed with Stewart's drumming and Slan Clarke's bass. From start to finish ... just perfect. I think even Letterman was a bit blown away at the end. And Deborah wrote all the music on Animal Logic ... genius.
Deborah Holland (vocal), Stanley Clarke (bass), Stewart Copeland (drums) with Sid McGinnis (guitar), Paul Shaffer (keyboards) and Will Lee (backing vocal)
Stellar performance!!! And I gotta say, Will Lee does not get enough credit for his exceptional background vocals, he's absolutely killing it on this song!
Being a fan/follower of both The Police and Return To Forever, I remember reading about this band way back in the late 80’s but never gave them much thought or a listen. Fast forward to 2021, and I get Animal Logic has a suggested feed in my favorite music app. WOW! This band was incredible and the caliber and wide range of guest musicians blew my mind! Jackson Browne, David Lindley, Freddie Hubbard...not to mention the amazing songwriting talent of lead singer Deborah Holland. This group deserved superstar fame.
Yeah, I bought the first album mostly because I was a huge Stanley fan but it took a few years for me to really appreciate it and its sequel. I think it's some of the best work Stanley did. Oh - and in the interim I had found Stewart's music for THE EQUALIZER and loved it, so when I dug out the first AL album again and listened all the way through it, there was an EQUALIZER Easter egg sitting right there in the middle of "Firing Up The Sunset Gun!" I got a big kick out of that.
I love that Dave’s guitar player is wearing that jacket…Dalmatian pattern! These musicians are off the charts awesome! Of course Stewart and Stanley are awesome but Deborah has one of the greatest female recording performances on both their albums!
I bought the album on vinyl way back in 1989 when it came out. Sadly I missed their gig in London at the Forum (called Town and Country Club back then)
As much as I miss The Police, you can just tell that Stewart is much more relaxed without the presence of Sting. Great song and combined with Stanley Clarke and the beautiful Deborah Holland they were a really tight band.
@@coolcat6303 You should recheck that. It was Steve Howe. Steve played on 2 Tracks for that album. "There's a Spy", and "As soon as the sun goes down". Michael played on all the others.
I really liked this band Deborah has a very nice voice and then there is that rythem section.Does any one know if they will record again? Thanks for the post!
***** Summers appeared initially on the Brazil tour under the moniker Rush Hour, Summers departed after this initial effort after deciding he no longer wanted to perform pop music and instead wanted to focus on jazz - not to mention the concern over the new band being compared to the Police - in addition to film scoring obligations.. Regardless of why he left, he was a part of the initial efforts. Deal with it. Its true.
+sdushdiu Oh I was not debating that he was part of the initial effort. Read what I wrote carefully. I know that he was the original guitarist for band. Michael Thompson even talks about that. However you said he left because he wanted to do Jazz etc. I was just letting you know that that was not the reason... most certainly not the main reason. There was a difference in how they wanted the album to be cut. One person had this idea of having different guitarists playing on different tracks while the other person wanted it to be just one guitarist. But even before that there were other reasons why he decided that he didn't want to do it. Playing Jazz was not the main reason. (Just by the way all that I said was in response to the original comment which said he didn't want to play pop anymore. It never mentioned anything about him not wanting to be compared to The Police etc) :) Either way it's nice to meet a fellow random music trivia lover. :)
sdushdiu I think he also said Joe Walsh was asked to play but forgot to turn up so Thompson was asked to go along last minute. Doesn't look like Thompson on this clip though?

Ha! That could have been me! This band knocked my socks off.
I think that Copeland fellow might have a future in drumming. What an awesome performance by everyone on the stage.

i love this song... Deb Holland is powerful vocally! And Stan Clarke and Stew Copeland are ridiculous talents!! Fantastic.
Stewart is ever at top on live but on studio is at his very best.
Stellar performance!!! And I gotta say, Will Lee does not get enough credit for his exceptional background vocals, he's absolutely killing it on this song!
Honestly, if you look at his credits, he did almost as much session work as a singer as a bass player.
@@lightaces Precisely, and again, still so under appreciated for all of the above.
Letterman always had the best sound engineers. This sound so good.
BUCKET LIST: Animal Logic REUNION....studio release and concert tour w/dvd (post covid).
Great to see this. Deborah Holland is a helluva good singer & Stanley & Stewart are laying down that funk with precision. Such an underrated band.

Wow what a performance
Love that bass slide at 2:11. Stanley is so animated.
An absolutely amazing band in EVERY respect!
They and The Dixie Dregs are the most underappreciated bands around...followed closely by Russell Smith.
Thanks for the Dixie Dregs shout out. They never got the recognition that they should have.
Animal Logic killed this performance. Great to see Will jumping in on backing vocals with such enthusiasm.
Saw these guys back in the day at UAlbany's Page Hall. The audience went nuts!
uscg906 I saw them on Ft Lauderdale beach. They were smokin.
I love that Dave’s guitar player is wearing that jacket…Dalmatian pattern! These musicians are off the charts awesome! Of course Stewart and Stanley are awesome but Deborah has one of the greatest female recording performances on both their albums!
Animal Logic was sooooo good. Saw them in Washington DC at Constitution Hall in '90
Slainte Ron I had tickets to see them at the old 9:30 but they cancelled a week or so before the show.
@@clash1469 930 club (the old one) was a great place. Except if you got stuck behind that pillar. Lol
Happy Birthday to Deborah Holland today!
Still a great f'n song....
I never knew about this project until now. Great footage. Thanks, Stewart.
I bought the album on vinyl way back in 1989 when it came out. Sadly I missed their gig in London at the Forum (called Town and Country Club back then)
Only Holland's strong voice could stand next to Clarke and Copeland!
As much as I miss The Police, you can just tell that Stewart is much more relaxed without the presence of Sting. Great song and combined with Stanley Clarke and the beautiful Deborah Holland they were a really tight band.
Sid McGuiness is a great guitarist To be able to back up all those guestsAlways right on
He has the dalmatian jacket too!
Great song and relevant in recent times!
Your mother is relevant in recent times
thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love it. Miss it.
Thanks, hadn't heard this live.
Stew is the best.. love the left beats and he is sööööö good. Wish I drumed like him. its all a case of personality I believe.
Lo! I see a ginger...her voice makes me happy...
Absolutely fantastic
Oh, if someone has a live clip of "I Still Feel For You" PLEASE post it! THAT one was my jam back in the day!
Saw them once back in the day. Ha cha!
I love Debra ~
On the original track I believe Steve Howe of Yes played the guitar
Actually it was a session guitarist named Michael Thompson.
@@coolcat6303 You should recheck that. It was Steve Howe. Steve played on 2 Tracks for that album. "There's a Spy", and "As soon as the sun goes down". Michael played on all the others.
Very good!
I didn't know Jennifer Saunders had such a good voice.
KILLING!!!!!
She has a nice voice on record. On stage she looks like a backup singer.
Steve Howe from Yes played on the studio recording of this song.
Nais!!!~!!!
That is a funny pun. Not Nin-nyish at all.
supergroup!
I really liked this band Deborah has a very nice voice and then there is that rythem section.Does any one know if they will record again? Thanks for the post!
The "Supergroup" that wouldn't be! Why not?
The drummer in the back seems OK.
Hahahaha.
Yeah. But he kinda disappeared after this act folded...
He’s definitely going places 🤣
2 words…..Stewart Copeland
More cowbell!
fun fact - this was the night the Berlin Wall came down.
Those breaks at 3.07 & 3.26...
Studio Version with Steve Howe (guitar)?
Steve Howe did all the guitar soloing on the studio cut.
No Sir. Michael Thompson did almost all the guitars on Animal Logic. :)
Who's the guitarist? I've always been a fan of modal chord progressions, and people who "get it." Did Andy Summers do the released version?
Michael Thompson was on the album but the guitarist here is Sid McGuiness. Thompson plays this song much better though.
Steve Howe played lead on the album track.
Andy Summers did the guitar then left after SA warm up tour.
Andy Summers was originally the guitarist in this band but backed out at the last minute not wanting to play "pop music" anymore.
+scott moore Wrong! He practiced with the lineup but left because of a Brazilian tour obligation/conflict.
I don't believe that is true. Watch the Tim and Pete show when they are interviewing Michael Thompson. He talks about why Andy Summers backed out.

Too many stars, too much competition....
No offence but it sounds like a U2 song. Still a jam
I always use this as an example of how talent is no guarantor in the creation of good music. Considering who's involved, this is unbelievably awful.
Horrible
Such a great band !
