Reminds me of the scene in house when he's listening to it and cuddy comes in and pulls the plug just before the crash (at 0:42)..."you ruined a perfect song"
you know Pete burnt out his ears/hearing in the Studio not in the live concerts... love to been there to witness him putting together Who's Next ... in the studio ..
Pete was high as a kite but brilliant, John unflappable, Keith bemused and Roger at his vocal best. Tremendous performance by one of the most legendary groups in the history of Rock and Roll.
Incredible, legendary live band. Anyone who saw them will tell you it's probably the best show they ever saw. And for those who didn't see it, check out the 2001 live performance of "Baba O' Riley" from NYC in dedication to the fallen heroes of 9/11. With Ringo's son, Zack on drums, it was an amazing performance. No one wanted to follow the Who that night.
You know, the bass player is not the showman in the band, but no doubt he did his job excellently, his bass playing has been impeccable thru the ages and I'd say he has a lot to do with the success of the band as a whole, and I guess the only one that isn't gesturing and jumping around. Roger, well, imagine Queen without Freddy, that's what Roger is to the band. Pete, the songwriter and along with Keith the eyecatchers of the group, no doubt. I admit, I have rediscovered the band, didn't know much about it until "Who Are You" back in the middle seventies, but watching their videos I recognized the sound at the beginning and since it has stuck to my mind. Keith Moon, well, Keith is a big powerhouse in the band, I have always liked his style of drumming, which reminded me of a video I was watching of Rush, "Tom Sawyer" and in one of the sudden glances at the band drummer I saw this guy that very much looked like Keith and asked myself if it was possible that Rush's recording was before Moon's passing because this guy played, drummed very similar to Moon, and of course Googled it. Come the discussion about the proverbial egg or chicken first appearance, since these two musicians play, to my understanding, very much alike. Who found who? Who cares, what I care is the both, Neil Peart and Keith Moon have easily been a big part of the band successes. It is a shame they both passed away. I can't imagine any of the bands without them, although both drummers were of course replaced. Baba O'Riley is one of them anthems for The Who, a band that was discovered by the 90's generation by the CSI Miami theme song, whoever made that choice of using The Who song made a great choice, the people from that decade who grew up watching Caruso and the show now know The Who has been making great music since the early 70's. The Who is a great band, even without Moon. Now I rest my case.
@@davidacevedo8620 Peart and Who, easily in the top three of rock drummers. Geddy Lee and Entwistle easily in the top three bassist. Alex and Towshend are two overlooked guitarist. I saw them just after Who's next was released, sat/stood in front of the band and was deaf for nearly 3 days afterwards...my buddy caught Daultrys's broken tamborine he threw into the crowd! Memorable.
Between John and his thunder fingers and Keith being all over the place actually it was Pete and his prefect timing that kept the band in time. Maybe not on this song per say but normally it was just that way.
This is unique for its time because the synth loop doesn't allow for any tempo fluctuation which is why Keith is wearing headphones here. Nowadays most big acts have all members wearing in ear monitors and are playing to backing tracks with a click. This particular song is sort of an early precursor to that method. The Wall live performances by Pink Floyd are an even better example because everything had to sync up with the on screen projections and continuity between songs.
When "BANDS" had talent. Today there is no such thing as a Band. Bands have instruments and associated people IN said band, who know how to play those intruments. Concerts are a live performance of a Band or Bands. Music today is basically non-existent. And "Musical" Talent is TOTALLY non-existent
I was 12 or 13 in the mid 80s and my dad made me paint the whole basement where there was a partially finished TV room. So I rented The Kids Are Alright on VHS, put it in the VCR, blasted the mono TV and got to work. I would stop and rewind this part so many times because it was my favorite song by The Who, that hearing this version in particular will always remind me of that day as a kid, spent painting in the basement, listening to The Who, when rock n roll meant the world.
I was never a huge fan of The Who but last summer as I sold my house and was moving out, I found hundreds of vinyl albums that had apparently been left behind by renters over the years up in the attic. The Who must've been their favorite band. I took all those albums to my new place and bought a record player. Here I am exploring them on CZcams and realizing just what a great live band they were. This song is breathtaking.

This (this performance in particular) is THE best version of Baba O' Reily they ever recorded--it equals if not tops the studio version. This is from the Kilburn 1978 performance--one of Moon's last. they did two shows that day, with nearly identicle set lists. this particular one from the kids are allright differs from the DVD release, but it is very similar--but its better, that's my point
Is it live or did they overdub it a little? I do agree, it's my favorite version, even better then "Who's Next". However "Won't Get Fooled Again" is better on "Who's Next" compared to the Shepperton versions....
Clearly this is not from Kilburn which was filmed in 1977 and Keith Moon wore a purple sparkle stage outfit. This is from 1978 at Sheperton Studio, and if you notice every member of the group is wearing the same outfit as Kilburn other than Keith Moon, who could no longer fit into that outfit cause he'd gained too much weight.
I've always and will be totally and UTTERLY, completely and helplessly in AWE and infatuated with PETE. I love his passion and just lets his body and mind do what it wishes in the moment :) That talent and perfection is amazing.
Thundering drums and bass, windmill guitar and screaming vocals..BRILLIANT! it’s what rock and roll is all about. Thank you gents, thank you for being “who” you are!
Only John Entwistle can take a 3 chord song and make it difficult to play on bass. He's literally using 4 fingers on his right hand and playing like 128th notes. He was the God of the instrument.
He was the one talented musician in the band. Townsend made himself famous with windmilling, jumping around and over-acting while playing the most basic chords. Keith Moon had NO technique at all. Just thrash around like the Muppets drummer. Daltry spinning his mic (whats up with that?). Meanwhile Entwistle stood calmly and quietly, playing impossibly fast, intricate bass lines. True genious
1979! I was a senior in high school. This was our music, back in the days you would roll your window down to talk to a friend and they were listening to the same radio station. The best times.
I’ve been playing bass for 30 something years and he always impresses me. One of the best ever! All together the greatest band of all time in my opinion.
Sad to say but the Golden Age of rock and roll is long gone and bands like this, Led Zeppelin and all of those other fantastic artists of the 70s will never be seen again. All these guys were Rock royalty !!

The greatest band ever to walk the planet. Live at Leeds - best live rock album ever recorded. Saw the original four play three times in the 70s, never to be forgotten.
One of the greatest performance by a rock band period. Pure emotion, no fake ass posing, lip syncing or dancers here. Real genuine talented artists playing their own instruments. This my friends is pure and easy !

This was filmed at Shepperton Studios (1978?)I lived close by. My girlfriend and I popped into The Anchor Hotel (pub) in Shepperton Square for a drink around 6 pm one night during this era. The bar was empty except for the Who who were all in front of us leaning on the bar. They all turned around as the door slammed as we walked in. The Who had bought Shepperton Studios around that time. About a year later I was in the bar with some "2nd division roady" friends at the Warren Lodge one night (a very small hotel opposite The Anchor owned by the same guy) in walks Roger Daltrey who had had his head shaved for the part in the movie McVicar they had been filming at Pinewood (I think). Anyway it was a small bar and he was on his own and seeing the guys I was with asked if he could join us at our table. Its funny we didn't ever talk about the Who. Top man!
hate to sound like an old fogey, but this is so much better than the overproduced crap on the radio these days. I' m just glad I grew up during a time when music was worth listening to.
I worship The Who - saw them live 3 times - ran off to Woodstock as a kid and it changed my life - Live music was everything. That said , there's some great music now too - Bruno Mars - for example- is incredible and does an amazing live show,
Not many times in our lives is there a band that just is perfect with not only their music and great songs but with the members. It’s very safe to say The Who in this video proves that! Keith Moon,Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle, and Pete Townsend were the best in their day!…… not the Beatles, not the Stones..somewhere maybe in between but definitely a great band! Thank them for the music. It will live on as long as we remember.
I was stationed in Nuremberg, West Germany in 1979. The Who performed at an area known as the Deusendykes. I was there but so far in the rear that I had difficulty in seeing the stage. The music was great though and the crowd was massive.
I thank God for music, for without it's magic I would a be perfect example of failed humanity. This band and this song have been my soulmates for decades now, perhaps one of the reasons I am still respirating. I am saddened by the impossibility of attending all the performances of bands that I grew up with, even more so in finding out they are not immortal and neither are their fans. I know life is much more than Rock music, yet humanity would be an alien reality (to me) without it. These performers, by virtue of their gifts and their passion, have ever filled my heart with good thoughts and feelings. I am grateful to the uploader and CZcams for this beautiful rendition of Baba O'Reily.
Ken Owens Unfortunately for me I wasn't even born when Moon was still alive. I'm debating whether or not to see them play late this month in Connecticut, because the tickets are really expensive, but then again this is probably my last chance to see them.
Ken Owens Its a shame you never made it seeing them live before Moonie passed on, I saw them at Charlton FC 31 May 1976. It rained all day we all got soaked and I never saw any one leave the show, I will never forget it with the lasers going it was the greatest Heavy, hard Rock live concert I ever saw and back in those day I saw many bands between 1975 and 1980.
JAVIER THE LEGEND He did, and I just saw Roger and Pete at Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut for the 50th anniversary tour. The best concert I've ever been to by far.
This one was recorded live in front of an audience at Sheperton Studios 25 May 1978, for inclussion in "The Kids Are Alright". That day other song was recorded for the movie (Won't Get Fooled Again) which will remain as the last time Keith played with The Who (he died two months later). I think this is the best version of this song on film!!
Simply amazing! Everyone focuses on Roger and Pete, but John and Kieth are ANIMALS! John’s playing is always spot on and Kieth was incredible, always impeccable time. And that, with headphones taped to his skull so he could hear the synth parts! Love The Who.
He was having a hard time locking to the synth part, which in that day with crap phones and monitors, i get it, but he also mess a couple changes up.. so no on your always impeccable time ... he never had that. Good energy. and some very cool parts... thats it
Such a great band and such a great song. They really knew how to capture the emotions of the moment. They were way in tune with the world and their audience.
If I had to name perhaps the top five most incredible and satisfying things I have encountered living life on planet earth from an infant until now, this would make the list.
It's impossible not to feel gloriously old listening to this in 2023 - I gave a listen to what another "generation" considers great pop music (T Swift) - but I rushed back here to Pete and the lads. Never better.
A miracle on CZcams. Moon died in 1978 but hes here playing in 1979 .........
That was my thought. LOL.

bar with some "2nd division roady" friends at the Warren Lodge one night (a very
small hotel opposite The Anchor owned by the same guy) in walks Roger
Daltrey who had had his head shaved for the part in the movie McVicar
they had been filming at Pinewood (I think). Anyway it was a small bar
and he was on his own and seeing the guys I was with asked if he could join us at our table. Its
funny we didn't ever talk about the Who. Top man!
Stick that up your kazoo, America's got talent.
I absolutely love blasting this on my stereo, have been since the 70s.
It’s a powerhouse of a song!!!
It sure is !!!
I saw them live when this Album came out and my Ears rang for two Days, Killer Show!
Natuurlijk..The Who in (Shepperton Studios 1978) , een geweldig nummer!!!
Back when bands were original and weren't trying to replicate someone else. Thousands of drummers since have watched Keith and tried to replicate him.
They brought this back, this is without a doubt the best rawk vid on YT..
I forgot how much more animated Townsend used to be!
I was just about to post the same thing😎💯😎
Well he did get pretty old lol
Hard to do at 75....😂
I thought he simply really needed to go to the bathroom... badly.
I think there might have been an 'attitude adjustment' involved in this performance...;)
hate to sound like an old fogey, but this is so much better than the overproduced crap on the radio these days.
NOW THIS IS HOW YOU ROCK ! BABA O RILEY - THE WHO .
I was stationed in Nuremberg, West Germany in 1979. The Who performed at an area known as the Deusendykes. I was there but so far in the rear that I had difficulty in seeing the stage. The music was great though and the crowd was massive.
Highschool in the 70's this was my favorite band, buy Zep, Floyd, stones, so many great bands back 60's,70's.
God this entire video is such a vibe. The song, the video quality, the outfits. Literally such a wonderful 5:19 minutes.
Do you look to the God who created music? Praise God from whom all blessings flow.
@@konroh2 sure do
" It's only rock & roll , but I like it !!!!!!!
The Who in their prime - CZcams treasure!
God i miss great music like this.
No gimmicks, don’t give a f*** about how they look, just pure power. That’s it. Great concerts.
Those were some sick dance moves at 2:00 . This no doubt must have been one of the greatest concerts ever.
God,what I would give to have been there,my biggest regret, music wise, not seeing them live, with moon and john
***** LUCKY YOU !
THE WHO 50TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR !
In my opinion this is the greatest rock song of all time.
Outstanding, a real gem. Thanks so much for posting
When this comes on the box and I'm driving, it's impossible not to crank up the volume and play air drums.
Good energy. and some very cool parts... thats it
I have been at their concert now in 2023. An unforgettable moment of my life. Simply magnificent
What a trip and joy to share this with my teenagers at age 57
Such a great band and such a great song. They really knew how to capture the emotions of the moment. They were way in tune with the world and their audience.
That bass sounds so awesome!!
This is what it was all about. Rock 'n Roll perfection. The kids were more than all right.
tons of drum issues, hearing test is in order. I am a who fan.
@@morbidmanmusicGet the test. I discovered major hearing loss just last year.
No words! Too good God Bless
GREAT PERFORMANCE. One of the best I've ever seen... especially the outstanding recording!!!
What great emotional feelings rooted in my childhood this track awakens 🤘
This was such an amazing time for music. I'm so glad that I was there to witness it.
So happy to have seen this song live 3 times
Incredible 1970s live performance! The video quality is amazing!
If I had to name perhaps the top five most incredible and satisfying things I have encountered living life on planet earth from an infant until now, this would make the list.
thanks for sharing this. man this was an amaziing band to see live back then..... they sure seemed like they were enjoying themselves.
This song gives me instant goosebumps - love it so much
Just what I was looking for, great!
Arguably the best live rock band ever! BTW it is a fact that you can't play this loud enough!
What a powerhouse of a band, and a legendary song.
Just absolutely spectacular.
Perhaps by what all rock band performances should be judged by!! Simply fantastic!!!
too many drum mistakes. Pay more attention next time,. .. my god. fans are deaf to reality.
A band that is played at other bands concerts to warm you up. One hell of a supergroup. One of the best.
Incredible clarity. Really got to see them all jam
Opening track to one of the greatest rock albums of all time - Who’s Next
Mano!!! Loko!!! Que sonzêra!!! Por isso que eu digo que houve uma época em que haviam bandas de rock de verdadei! Cantavam com a alma e coração!
It's impossible not to feel gloriously old listening to this in 2023 - I gave a listen to what another "generation" considers great pop music (T Swift) - but I rushed back here to Pete and the lads. Never better.
Shut the fuck up and enjoy the song you moaning bastard
The GREATEST rock band in the history of rock bands! None finer!!
Absolute joy to watch.... these guys had fun!!
