      Thank you for your question.
      When fresh paper is sized and then after the passage of time the sizing disappears, there are two options. You either have sizing reversion - in which case there is nothing to be done. The sizing agent has been permanently denatured. Or you have Fugitive sizing. In this case, the sized nature can be restored by heating it up. Roughly - 105 C for about 15 minutes should do the trick.. If this does not work, then you have sizing reversion. Good luck !!

    Does surface sizing agents like SMA, SAE, SAA, EAA can improve the busting strength of the paper

    Can Alum be used in Paper Making without rosin to achieve water proofing (sizing/cobb).. Some paper Mills in Pakistan use starch and alum at size press to improve bursting and cobb, is this possible or this am accurate approach.??

    • @PaperClassroom
      @PaperClassroom  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Hi. Thanks for your question. The short answer is no.
      Rosin does the waterproofing- the alum holds it in place in the fibre.
      I have never heard of, or seen alum used with starch. I cannot see how it works. The starch will provide extra hydrogen bonds which is why the burst will increase. This may contribute to an improvement in temporary wet strength. This may show up on a short cobb like 30 seconds or 1 minute. But I guess you will never see it on a 5 minute cobb

    You mentioned that after the paper dries when using AKD that there is still no sizing effect. I am making handmade paper and am going to use AKD. So it will will take three weeks after it is dry until the paper is properly sized and complete, right? That seems like a long time, or am I missing something? In videos where people make handmade paper no one has mentioned that AKD is a three week process until there is usable paper.

      You may try to speed up the process by drying at higher temperature. We use AKD and dry the paper at temperature 105 Celsius. Several minutes at this temperature gives good enough initial sizing effect which improves during following weeks.

    Firstly, Thank you so much for this informative video. My question is that how ASA Hydrolyzate is removed from the system? And is there any procedure for removing of akd waxy material formed also?

    • @PaperClassroom
      @PaperClassroom  Před 3 lety

      Thanks for your question. You cannot put in a procedure or equipment to remove it. It is a solid particle and so it will get trapped in the sheet as it goes down the wire. this is the only way it can be removed from the system and is the reason why the sheet is slippert

    Dear steven, Thanks for your useful video. Is the ASA same with SSA ( surface sizing agent)?

    • @MrSajjad970
      @MrSajjad970 Před rokem +1

      no.SSA is surface sizing agent ,while ASA is internal sizing agent.

    Can we use these sizing chemicals at size press? Or wet end only

    • @PaperClassroom
      @PaperClassroom  Před 3 lety

      Thank you for your question. The answer is, it depends on the chemical
      For the rosin/alum system, it can only be used at the wet end
      For materials like AKD, it can be used either at the wet end, or the size press
      Polyvinyl Alcohol can also be used, but because of its cost, it is best used at the size press
