    0:23 Why add fillers?
    + To increase Smoothness
    + To increase Density
    + To increase Opacity
    + To increase Brightness
    - To reduce Porosity
    - To reduce Cost
    2:10 Ideal filler properties
    + High brightness
    + High refractive index
+ Small particle size (for smoother sheet)
    - Low solubility
    + Inert
    - Low cost
    - Low density (smaller, lighter)
    + High retention
3:46 Which filler is not inert?
    • Calcium Carbonate
    5:28 Relative costs
    9:43 Clay
    • aka Kaolin
    • Hydrated aluminum silicate
    • Usually stacked hexagons
    - Calcined has difficult rheology
    11:29 Calcium Carbonate or “Chalk”
    • Natural
    • From sedimentary rocks
    • Usually stacked hexagons
    • Almost round structure
    • Calcite and Argonite crystal structure
+ Brighter and cheaper than Clay
    14:35 Titanium Dioxide (TiO2)
    • Anatase form & Rutile form
    17:07 Talc
    • Hydrated Magnesium silicate

As a handpapermaker in Ecuador we have sourced TiO2 from a paint supplier. We are attempting to make watercolor paper. Can we add this to the Hollander beater or to the vat where we are pulling sheets?

Hi. Thank you for your question. You do not say if the TiO2 is solid or slurry. You can add it in either place, but personally I would not add it to the beater because of the TiO2 wearing the knives on the roll and bed plate
If the TiO2 is in solid form, disperse it first, then add the dispersion to the vat

    Hi sir!
I've been making a project mainly focusing on grass papers. What's the best filler? (I'm into calcium carbonate since TiO2 is quite carcinogenic)

What type of filler worked best in packaging/brown paper?

Hi, I assume you man packaging paper from recycled fibre. I have worked with three of the largest packaging companies over the years. None of them have deliberately added filler. But I have been predicting that one day they will!

Sir in clay how to check dispersant demand please tell me sir. Some clay dispersed in water. Some clay not dispersed in water .Both clay need same dispersant demand
