Thanks Bill! Great video! Quick question - 5ml of the gelatin for a 5x7 print, correct? Would you double it for an 8x10?

Dear Bill, thanks for all your extremely educative videos and you helped me a lot in learning and understanding of your printing technique. I appreciate the tremendous work and effort you invest. I have a question, what dilution of formaldehyd you are using? Is it 37% or less? Thanks in advance of your answer. Cheers Chris and I keep on following you. Thanks

Hello! So sorry to be slow and answering. I didn’t see this comment until now. Yes, the formaldehyde I use is anywhere from 36 to 38% solution. You really don’t have to have much. I use about one drop per 5 mL of sizing. Even though it is a very small amount, you should always do it in a well ventilated area. Best of luck! Thank you for watching and for your kind comments!

Also, I have a couple of questions about your formaldehyde (Formalin?). First, where do you get it in the small bottles with the dropper? Second, is this the 37% formalin solution? Thanks for any info you can provide

Yes, this is the 37% solution. I actually put it into the smaller bottles from the larger one that I got from the science company. My original bottle was 16 ounces and I’ve been using it for a long long time.

Nice video, thanks for the information. One question, would you recommend this kind of sizing for Arches 88 paper (or washi paper) for platinum palladium process? I know other people use glue and alum for that. Thanks again!

Hi there and thank you. I have not tried this prior to printing my Palladium because it would seem counterproductive in that the Palladium needs to soak somewhat into the fibers of the paper. This is why I wait until after I’ve done my Palladium layer before sizing and doing the gum layers. Best thing to do is to give it a try. I have some Hahnemuhle Sumi E paper here that I’ve been thinking of trying that on and if successful, I will report back.

Hi Bill, enjoyed your video. I have a some questions related to the sizing process. First, what is the ratio of water to gelatin? I saw that you used 8 grams of gum, but didn't see how much water you had in your beaker.

Hi Tom! Glad you liked it! I had 400 mL to begin with. Basically I like to go with a 2% solution.
