- With waterfowl season approaching I figured a review of the Benelli Nova was in order. This pump-action shotgun is the entry level of the Benelli line of shotguns and along with Supernova are the only pump-actions in their lineup. Budget friendly and reliable, I have used this shotgun for almost 20 years of waterfowl hunting, some upland hunting, and trap shooting. Benelli also offers this shotgun in 20 gauge, which is a very nice shotgun for days in the field.

My favorite pump shot gun is my Nova tactical. It is the most accurate slug gun I have ever seen.
The Italians make some good stuff! I haven't shot slugs through my Super Nova Tactical but it has done the trick duck hunting a time or two.
My dad also bought one 20 years ago and gave it to me. Lots of memories with it. Never misses a beat.

I actually won my Nova at a wild game dinner raffle that was about 20+ years ago. I’ve used it for dove, quail and wild turkey. It’s been my go to 12 gauge. I’ve also used it for trap and sporting clay and after all these years it still shoots like the first day I got it. Between my 870 wing master and my a nova those two are my favorite shotguns , but when I go out in the field my Benelli goes out with me.

Nice Review Sir. I put a Limbsaver buttpad on my Nova and I can't recommend it enough. Felt like a different gun but in a good way.

Like my nova 12ga, I added the rifle site slug barrel and tend to leave it on when stored. It was much more than the Carlson barrel.
Is that a factory Benelli slug barrel or some other brand?
My Nova had a ridiculously heavy trigger, (9lbs)even for a shotgun. I did some work and got down to 6lbs. I like it much better now. No other complaints.
That's really interesting, did you swap the trigger out or just lighten it some?

@@Northwoods.Nobodies Yep, I got the regular one, 28" barrel. I hunt birds and rabbits.

@@Northwoods.Nobodies I believe a hunting shotgun can be used for home defense, a tactical shotgun is worthless for hunting.
@@djangolachlan2194 For the most part I agree with you. That being I have used a Benelli SuperNova Tactical while duck hunting in North Dakota haha.

@@Northwoods.Nobodies standard stock, not the supernova. I was going to buy a 14 inch supernova when I got my PAL, but I went with the regular Nova Tactical instead since it did most of the same stuff for a cheaper price.
@@SamSquids Yeah, the receiver is slightly different but I don't personally find it to be any more beneficial compared to the standard Nova. I have a SuperNova Tactical with the 18.5" barrel.
Are the receivers the same size between the 12 and 20 gauge or is the 20 gauge smaller?
20 gauge is smaller all around, receiver, mag tube, pump, etc. Identical shotgun but maybe 10-15% smaller.
Do you feel that the 26 inch barrel is better for waterfowl or 28 inch? Why did you decide the 26 inch barrel?
I don't have a strong opinion on either length honestly and my Dad gave me the shotgun so I had no input in the barrel length at the time. I've made some pretty long shots using the factory chokes and 26" barrel. The only thing I see is mobility and swinging the gun around(26") vs maybe a little more velocity in my mind(28").
Can I swap the barrel for 18 inch barrel? I heard Mossberg 500 can change the barrel but 590 could not .
I've put my Nova barrel on my SuperNova Tactical before and had no problems.
@@Northwoods.Nobodies I was looking at both and didn't know which to choose but I was thinking of super nova cus I can put an adjustable stock and I'm small. I'm trying to watch videos on how to find my length of pull because people keep saying Benelli has long one and idk what that is

Would this be a good shotgun for deer hunting?
I deer hunt in a rifle zone so I have zero experience with deer hunting with a shotgun so keep that in mind but the Nova should handle it no problem. If you're in a slug zone make sure you've got a slug barrel for it though.
3 1/2 inch OO Buckshot paired with the modified choke you will kill deer out to 50yds
I own two 870s, a Mossberg 590 and a Nova. Prefer the 870's and Mossberg by a mile. Benelli action just doesn't feel right to me and has loosened up over the years. Broke an extractor on it about five years ago. Not a big deal but hasn't happened to the 870's or 590, both of which have a lot more rounds through them. Not confident of its long term durability. Also, heavy and just doesn't fit me as well. Lastly, it's kinda ugly but that is purely subjective.
The broken extractor is an interesting failure, haven't heard of that before on a Nova. I couldn't even guess the number of rounds I've put through my Nova at this point but it's about 20 years old and I've used it for almost every duck hunt, upland hunt, or clay pigeon shoot I've done. Funny how each persons experience can be different.
The Nova can be a little long compared to the 870's or 590's but personally it fits me well, the weight doesn't bother me, and I like the look of it. That's why there are so many firearm manufacturers in business though, different folks like different things! Cheers!
