  • Palworld broke multiple players records with Steam sales and top concurrent players count at more than 2 million. How did PocketPair make such an indie game like Palworld rise so fast and defeat the whole AAA game industry? Is Palworld truly a clone of Pokemon?

With the success of Baldur's Gate 3 and Lethal Company, in addition to Palworld, the illusion painted by the AAA video game industry is being shattered, steadily breaking the consumers out of their malaise of complacency and reminding them of what video games could be, with each doing it in such drastically different ways.

I saw the price on release, I bought it on release and haven't looked back ever since. A game of this magnitude that checks the box for most players disappointed about Ark Survival Ascended at that price is just a steal and you would be pretty stupid not to buy it immediately at that price if you were a fan of survival games and had enough spare cash to do so. It's just a good mesh of everything that has worked for previous games while trying to limit some of the bad aspects of those games.

One of the things I think is hilarious about Palworld is that, in a significant sense, despite the guns and whatnot, the core gameplay is *significantly* less "exploitative" of your Pals compared to your Pokemon n a Pokemon game. Like, the vast majority of the utility a Pokemon has in a Pokemon game is tied to how well it can fight other Pokemon, whereas Pals just have so many beneficial non-combat uses that I, at least, feel significantly more emotionally attached to most of the Pals I catch and put to work than all but a handful of Pokemon I've trained, ever.
Pokemon says in its marketing some form of "you and your Pokemon are a team," but Palworld shows what happens when you make a game where that ACTUALLY is true, where you and your Pals really are a team...you make all of the money.

In addition, the meme of turning your base into a sweatshop for pals works for maybe 15 minutes. Being kind to them, letting them have breaks and good food and all that kinda stuff, benefits you more. They don't suffer from injury or illness if you give them fair conditions, and work longer even when you're away from your base exploring. They are happy, and they will happily work for you.

Shin Megami Tensei being the first creature collector goes even deeper. Before SMT in 1992, there was Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei in 1987, an NES game that was an adaptation of the Digital Devil Story manga. It was the first Creature Collector RPG ever created, and the similarities between Pokemon and MT/SMT are way more plentiful than the similarities between Palworld and Pokemon. SMT was released in 1992 as a successor series by the same developers in an attempt to distance the series from the manga adaptation it started as.
Also, fun fact, the narrative for decades has been that Digimon is a knockoff of Pokemon, but in actuality, Pokemon and Digimon took from SMT at the same time completely separately from each other, but Pokemon got more popular and its insane cult-like fans started claiming Digimon was a knockoff just to protect their precious IP.

If you dig a little deeper you'll find out about Cosmic Soldier from 1985, which is not only older than the Megami Tensei series it already allowed you to recruit monsters in the form of aliens. Maybe there are titles even older than this one.
Pokémon's creator directly mentioned that the monster catching aspect was inspired by an Ultraman season that had the same concept. A lot of gen 1 Designs are also references to their Kaiju and Dragon Quest's monsters. In terms of gameplay, I think Pokémon took more from Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy.
I don't think Digimon is directly inspired by Megami Tensei either, since it was pretty much created to be a boys' counterpart to the Tamagotchi. In fact, the original concept for Digimon was based on elemental creatures and it got scrapped because during development they became aware of Pokémon, which was increasing in popularity at the time, and found it to be too similar, then came up with the digital theming. After that they went out of their way to avoid having designs too similar or that directly reference other japanese franchises, at least in the first few years. It also took some time until they had a proper turn based-rpg.

They launched a whole new test build for players to test and give feedback. The staff on Craftopia is the same staff it has always been, Palworld has its own dedicated team. Craftopia is not abandoned. It's built in Unity not unreal so all members of Pocketpair proficient in Unity are on the project. All new hires are experienced in Unreal as Palworld has become a huge focus for the company. Craftopia will still get regular updates from its original team. All this information is what I have found on their Discord.
Edit: I should note, this could all change in the future. As far as I am aware Craftopia only has 2 more biomes, maybe 2 more tech levels and polish / translation, then it is basically complete. So the team might just rush through it and move over to Palworld.

Well, game devs said that Baldur's gate III was a once event, that was lightning in the bottle.
A game made over a span of what? just checked 6 year, with 400 people working, using early access to improve it, with heart soul and dedication.
That could be repeat once every year or once every two years, that was once in a decade game, that was not possible for the over 5 different studio with over 400 people to get such a win with more frequency.
Then Palworld shows up, said "hold me sake, gonna get the gun", and actually does a catches a "lightning in a bottle" how? do not ask, it was a combination of skill and dumb luck one can only find similar in Jack Chan movies.
They even dropped the game engine they had experience with for another one mid development because they got a golden opportunity hire (that knew nothing about unity, but was a expert in unreal 4) in a crazy belt it all move.
Even more crazy, the game was finished as soon they ran out of money, and nobody was actually keeping the budget in check.
No to mention that they had to rig and animated 100 monsters, when they did not know what heck a animation rig is not long before hiring a experienced animator.

Something important to mention about "Gotta catch em all" is that Pokemon abandoned the catch phrase in the early 2000s around the release of gen 3.
This fact will often be brought up by Dex Cut defenders, when people used to say "Pokemon is about catching them all, the dex cut goes against the vision of pokemon" they would reply "Erm Ackshually Pokemon abandoned that catch phrase ages ago".
I'm sure the Gamefreak/Pokemon bootlickers would try and attack Pocket Pair for using it, but to do so would be hypocritical.

There's a lot of little gameplay tuning in Palworld I really like, particularly around inventory/materials management. Burden limits are forgiving and you can carry a totally useful amount of stuff, if you're in your base you can use use a material at a work station without having to tediously go through chests, once you unlock the feedbag you don't have to manually eat, simple quality of life things. I always got the impression that some games were actively trying to waste my time dealing with un-fun micromanagement of supplies to push up /played time numbers, or were just going for a like-real-life level of tedium, rather than because they were fun game mechanics.
It's not a perfect game, the combat is pretty vanilla and boss fights aren't nearly as complex/challenging/rewarding as something like DS3 or Elden Ring, but as far as the overall approach they have to making games I really like it, and it punches way above its weight being a $30 early access game.

Palworld definitely has its moments where it’s rough around the edges (that’s pretty customary with any game released in Early Access), but the actual gameplay loop is so much fun. I’ve been having a blast exploring the world and discovering new pals, turning my base from a crack shack to an actual, self sustaining base, and learning more technology to become a better pal tamer. Its a game that doesn’t waste your time and gives you a rewarding progression system for exploring, catching pals, and leveling up. It’s been years since a Pokemon-like game has caught my interest and Game Freak’s recent releases have done nothing but make me stay away from it with how buggy and downright repetitive they got. Palworld is a rightful competitor to it, especially with how it runs, the game actually being fun, and the price being lower than AAA and extremely accessible.
Don’t get me wrong, I do think there are some grounds for the whole “stealing ideas” argument, but that’s the only thing I can get behind. To say this is a complete asset flip of AI generated crap is infuriating.

Pokemon just becomes stale because they have nothing to compete against, there is no competition in the market of "monster catching games", they have a complete Monopoly on it. Competition usually lights a fire under someones ass to impliment new things, to try out new stuff. So if Nintendo would try to shut down Palworld, it would just show that they don't want any competition because that would make them have to work harder to still appeal to the masses, which, let's be honest, fades year after year.
Also Nintendo didn't even invented half their Pokemon they have, an Icecream cone, a trash bag with eyes and mouth, a key chain, a chandelier, fridge, microwave or lawnmover... I mean, are you kidding? How uninspired is that? Let someone else atleast have their own spin on monsters that are at least somewhat creative, where you are also able to catch them. What is the problem with that?

    • @SPONGCHAO
      @SPONGCHAO Před 2 měsíci +5

I mean... monster tamer games are an entire genre and have been for a long time now. There's always been competition, people just never look past pokemon to discover the rest and the ones that do get light shone on them are often ALSO just called 'lol its just a pokemon ripoff'. Pokemon DOES have a monopoly, but people incorrectly thinking any game where you collect cool/cute monsters and do stuff with them is a pokemon ripoff is also part of that problem. I love Temtem, but that game is way closer to 'pokemon ripoff' than Palworld, and people even say similar things about Digimon... even though Digimon came first.
But yeah, bottom line is that too many people aren't even aware that monster taer games have always been an entire genre and as a result incorrectly assume only Pokemon does it. Cassette Beasts, Monster Sanctuary, Spectrobes, Yokai Watch, Monster Rancher... shits been around, to varying degrees of quality. People just don't look.

The only thing that I'm hoping for with palworld is continuing to develop the systems that they implement from other games a little better. I'm definitely not agreeing with all the plagiarism people, and maybe the issue is that I don't like the pokemon games in the first place, but I find that for boss fights, I'd rather just play elden ring. For survival gameplay I'd rather play arc or rust. For exploration I'd rather play tears of the kingdom. Hopefully with their newfound budget they continue working on the systems that they have in place now that the pressure is off instead of feature creep.

Yes I would rather play ark, I love crashing, having to manually manage my inventory and waste hours to make some bullets, i love being overencumbered because I have to bring all the materials in my inventory, I love that when Im overencumbered I can't move at all while palworld already changed that,I love resources and equipment having up to 7 different tipes of heavy material requirements (fkn cryoballs, while palsphere require 3 materials to craft in Palworld at level 1), I love a taming sistem where you have no clue when the shithead is about to fall asleep and you might end up hurting at the last seconds ruining your tame and wasting your time, I love taming taking upwards of 24 real time hours in official servers, I love that I could do that and loose every single fkn thing I own while palworld ensure that your stored and carries pals are safe (unsless changed settings), I love lifeless and buggy dinosaur who don't feel alive and have 3 total animations, I love that my character can only walk run crouch and jump and even if he could dodge the hitboxes are shittier than dark souks 2, I love that you need a paid dlc to have the ability to climb walls, I love that the terrain is a fumbled mess of cliff and extremely packed up small trees that blocks you and make flying mounts a necessity rather than a choice, I love that armor is not balanced at all where you take no damage if you have it but has shit durability, meaning if you don't have luck or a grappling hook you have to wait for whatever to kill you because every hit has a mini knockback effect, there is no skill sistem so they just auto attack endlessly and their ai is just "move as close as you can to target x and autoattack" (even minecraft has fkn skeletons bruh), I love having to dedicate entire play sessions to collecting resources, I love doing so with no fast travel (unless you get to endgame teleporters), I love doing so in the ocean (they took the most boring ass biome of the game and instead of making it fun/interesting they decided to add jellyfishes which just act as flosting mine which when come in contact will permanently stun lock you and your creature until death, you cant attack them melee cause if you try you get instantly stun you and other wild creatures are immune, you get gang raped by every other sealife and you cant do nothing but watch and wait), I also love that at ond point they added electric eels which would do thesame thing WHILE SWIMMING FASTER THAN THE PLAYER!!!!!! It was so unbearably shit that they changed it due to player backlash. i love half ass dlc released while the game was in a dogshit state, I love that after years the server search is still broken as fuck, slow as dogshit and sometimes dosent show you what you search for, I love that the bosses have no iteractable mechanic because their special attacks are undodgeable and it's just a dps battle that to win you have to bring 20 perfect creature and hope to win (creature thay you will lose permanently if they die or the boss timer runs out), I also love that when you don't succeed you lose EVERY ITEM YOU HAD ON (cant recover the deathbag), I also love having to take workshift with friends because if you want to raise a dino with imprinting you have to interact with them every hour for real life days in cases of quetzal and giga
Don't ever ever play Ark when Palworld is an alternative, they are soom gonna add pvp and it will completely destroy and overshadow Ark

On top of that, while auto makers haven't tried to sue rockstar, plenty of weapons manufacturers have tried to sue over games like Call of Duty etc for the detail specific recreations of real world guns.

That argument would not apply to palworld. The artistic choice to represent a fantasy world is very different to the choice to represent reality.
