A Recipe for Success: Palworld and The Decline of Pokémon

  • A broad overview of Palworld's game mechanics and how it relates to my disappointment with the Game Freak's recent Pokémon games. I did not originally expect to make a video about this because I don't usually bother with early access titles, but its reception and the context of its release made me feel some kind of way.
    Imagine how many sales Game Freak would see if they released Pokémon games on Steam. Just imagine.

    31:05 it is very interesting how much this game does make you feel attached to your team. Its sort of like, having the option to make a bad environment, and overwork the pals, the ability to do that, makes it mean so much more when you dont do that.

    Quick thing, from 200h gameplay time:
    Pal's Stamina is different from Players, and varies from Pal to Pal. You can sprint on your Direhowl, and when it runs out, you can sprint on foot while theirs recovers, then remount when you run out and recover.

    The original trailers had Palworld running in Unity and did use store bought assets, but PP switched to Unreal Engine (literally just bc they hired a vet UE dev who had no unity exp), then had to make their own assets. Probably a better long term trade off. Though I do hope we get earlier features and art style from said earlier trailers as it was even more stylized. Ties the world together a little more then pseudo realistic maps meets cartoony monster violence, imho

    I used to gaslight myself with the newer games' graphics by thinking they were just trying to be as modest as possible, to make a humble statement that you don't need hyperrealistic grahics to make a good game and to pay respects to their roots of a simple 2D sprite artstyle. I do believe that a game doesn't need perfect graphics to be good and I can understand wanting to have a consistant artstyle, but obviously I don't thonk thats the case anymore.
    I do think the style of palsbeing more simple compared to the human and environment models clash a little, but maybe that's the intention if pals aren't part of the worldin the same way real animals are. Besides, maybe the pal models that have just flat textures for eyes and mouths will get updated someday to have more 3D form. The current flatness is isn't gamebreaking or a dealbreaker and it's the least of their concerns right now anyway.
    I don't mind less realistic or low-polygon graphics in games, but Pokémon graphics as of late feel so soulless and careless. It has this uncanny valley of effort and carelessness that's hard to describe. There's just enough of an upgrade from previous gens to notice but not enough to actually be good and I think part of that is from how untouchable the franchise has become, making it complacent. They'll get millions of dollars no matter how low quality it is, so wouldn't that mean putting in more effort for more quality than "needed" is a waste of money to them? That's the kind of soulless corporate giant logic that only comes about when they become untouchable.

    • @TarlukLegion
      @TarlukLegion Před 3 měsíci +6

      You don't need hyperrealistic graphics, because "graphics" are simply the execution of the game's art direction. Technological fidelity *can* help with the execution depending on the art direction, but obviously it isn't always necessary; so it's always felt silly to me when people point to games like Minecraft or Shovel Knight saying that "graphics don't matter" just because they don't require high technological fidelity, the graphics obviously *do* matter because how those games look is a big part of why they're so charming.
      The early Pokemon games are a great example of that, Gens 2-5 look fantastic because the art direction is solid, and the execution of that art direction is tailored extremely well around each generation of hardware. The art direction of the Switch games wasn't necessarily a *terrible* foundation, but the execution is so haphazard that it's actively distracting and pulls you out of the experience. Palworld is maybe a bit more generic in terms of art direction, but the execution is done significantly better compared to Game Freak's offerings.

      Other than Soul-less being a silly buzzword, the game has the Hud of Fortnite with a similar art style, the upgrading of Ark, and the creature design of Pokémon. Nothing on the surface of it look original or anything more than a product riding on the creativity of greater studios. To see the things that makes the game exceptional, you got to play it and really pay attention. The expressiveness of the monsters is beyond stuff than even persona 5, SMT and other creature collector games. The gun animations are better than you expect. It surprisingly stable and content rich. There a lot of thoughtful ideas implemented for player enjoyment. It these smaller touches that give the soul, and the game full of them.

    31:20 It's a little bit of an exploit, but there is a way to "quick revive" KO'd pals.
    Pals on the base who are KO'd for any reason can be picked up by other pals and thrown into a bed to rest, instantly reviving them and letting them quickly recover HP while they sleep. You can just put your KO'd pal onto the work force (which unceremoniously dumps their body in front of the pal box) and one of your other worker pals will take care of the rest!

    I hope for not only Palworld's success the emergence of even more creature capture games that go big, go 3D, and beat Pokemon at it's own game. GF hasn't had a real rival in decades and Palworld, while a good start, won't put a dent into GF's pocketbooks enough. A large part of Palworld's success is that they emulated Pokemon's art style which they can't copyright. That immediately made Palworld stand out and draw people in with the familiar. Other creature capture games try too hard to look completely different from Pokemon that they wind up just being in its shadow. Pixel games are cute but not what the general audience is looking to play and Temtem looked 3 generations behind in their 3D models.

      IMO it's the turn-based gameplay that most Pokemon wannabes try to copy. That is the BIG reason as to why most monster catcher games just don't get peoples attention. If the success of Palworld sets a trend on NOT making a turn-based monster catcher game, THAT may entice TPC on releasing something close to what Palworld did. Palworld's sales figure is more than enough market data for TPC to take 'risks'.

    pokemon has been stale for the past decade. people have been crying out for some sort of pokemon mmo or 3d open world game for as long as I can remember (and I remember gen 1). The fact it has been almost 25 years since pokemon came to the us and just for comparison, we're at about 20 years since world of warcraft launched. every kid and young adult gamer in the mid 2000's DREAMED of some sort of mash-up between wow and pokemon. Remember Pokemon go? that came out almost 8 years ago and it took off like a rocket because so many pokemon players craved something different.
    Palworld hit that gold vein that game freak has been sleeping on completely by accident. I played it, got through most of the in-game content in 20-some hours, and have put it away for now, but am looking forward to new updates.
    Also, on that note, it might be my age showing, but I kind of miss the days where you bought a video game for 20-40 dollars, played the absolute heck out of it for a couple weeks to a month, beat it, and put it away, maybe to revisit it in a couple years on a slow day. I'm tired of 90% of games out there trying to be the only game you'll play for the next 5 years, usually by making it more grindy instead of genuine fun for the whole time.

    I gotta say this is a spectacularly well put together video essay, especially from a small channel. The editing in place is subdued and not constantly in your face like a lot of newer channels trying to replicate the comedic timing of a short form content.
    The pacing of it is also abnormally good, as each point is given enough time to breathe while not lingering or repeating things ad nauseum.
    Although I really do hope Palworld takes full adavntage of being early access instead of cut and running, I've already put about 60 hours into a 30 dollar game and enjoyed it the entire way, so no matter what happens concerning the continued development of the game, I've already gotten my moneys worth with it.

    I hate to be the one to say it, but gamefreak just go "doesn't matter if it looks scuffed, kids will just look for the creatures"(marketed to children)
    Palword is basically just pokemon marketed to adults and survival crafter players. Gamefreak know parents will give in to their kids begging, while savvy adults see the declining quality.

The Zelda, Mario, and Pikmin games on the Switch are aimed at the same demographics and they're still good enough to get "Game of the Year" nominations from adult fans and gaming publications alike. They chose to go all out with Mario Wonder and Tears of the Kingdom by polishing them as much as possible even though they were going to sell well no matter what.

Deploy them out into your base (replacing a working pal, if you have to) and they'll be unconscious, but any pal with Handiwork stat will go into Rescue mode and carry your downed pal to a bed, where they gain at least one HP by sleeping and go from Incapacitated to Major Injury to Minor Injury to No Injury, but as long as they have a sliver of HP the message on the top left will probably say they're "in good condition!" despite the little orange injury banner.

    You bring up a good point about the gameplay loop designed to keep players playing.
    It's kind of why I am not a big fan of so many games not being ale to have a pause feature. I get it; there are some games and instances where the devs can't impliment a pause feature even if they wanted to like a multiplayer server and the lack of a pause means that the addiction cycle of seeking gratification or reward for an action can continue its stimulation that keeps someone playing for hours on end. However, at some point, I do think it can feel disrespectful of the player. To me, not allowing for some means of a break suggests that the producers who made this choice don't have faith that you'll ant to return to the game on your own or that they rely on this addiction feedback to maintain engagement. This is why I hardly play video games; my arthritis doesn't allow forme to play for long periods of time, even if engaging gameplay or addictive feedback made me want to, which imo leads me to not want to chance engaging in the first place if a game doesn't allow me to have human limits and needs. It's a big reason why I've played mostly Pokémon games up to this point: the turn-based gameplay is easier on my hands.
    I don't need every game to have a pause button or to all be arthritis friendly. I am just sharing my opinion on the gameplay loop in modern games.

    I love how Pals don't undergo metamorphosis. I preferred Marill to Azumarill and Sentret to Furret for cuteness, and always thought both Dragonair and Dragonite were wonderful designs but had no business being the same creature. A lot of Pokemon advancement outside of the likes of caterpillars turning into butterflies or moths is just some combination of "it gets bigger" , "it gets uglier" , or "the tiny bobble head baby was added to give you something to advance from into its actual base form" . There are _some_ Pokemon "evolution" concepts I liked, but I think way too many Pokemon did that which didn't need to.
    I also think only about half or maybe a quarter of the creature designs in a given generation of Pokemon are good, and the chaff of needless evolutions or pre-evolutions often make up the bulk of my "Why did this need to be here?" lists. Especially cross-generation retroactive trash like the babies from Generations 2 and 4 or evolutions like Magmortar, Electivire, and Roserade. Roselia was a perfect little rose monster, and Roserade's roses are objectively worse looking in terms of art because the games continuously look more plastic and artificial with each iteration of the style.
    I wouldn't mind a couple critters here or there permanently transforming into a stronger form under certain conditions, but turning a Beegarde into an Elizabee should take rare and hard to find royal jelly and not just combat experience. I think _temporary_ transformations would be even cooler, for the most part.

    My main issue with Palworld (outside of it being a survival-crafting game) is the combat. I like that you can fight beside your Pals and ride them, or perform some kind of tag-team option with them (like Foxsparks' flamethrower), but outside of that, I hate that you have very little control over what moves your Pal performs. They have a bad habit of using super-effective attacks when I'm trying to catch a Pal, and not using super-effective attacks when I'm trying to kill a Pal. The AI is also horrible in that they'll frequently get stuck on terrain, or completely miss attacks often. I feel like I'm doing much more of the work sometimes during fights. On top of that, I really don't like the lack of evolution. It basically makes early game Pals get far outclassed by more late game Pals. Sure, there are some ways to make sure the early game Pals can keep up, but it requires a lot of work and time when I could just, ya know, catch a more powerful Pal instead. There are other issues I have too, like the overly simplistic type chart, 3 moves instead of 4 for each Pal, and 5 Pals on a team instead of 6, but the other issues I feel play a bigger role into why I find the combat lacking.

    • @kazoorion7993
      @kazoorion7993 Před měsícem

      I get what you are trying to say, but
      1) You CAN choose which moves you want your Pal to use and which one you don't and while the AI still needs some improvement, you have to take into consideration the cooldown of your attacks cuz the stronger it is, the longer it will be. The strategy here is that you have at least one decent move with less cooldown as possible so your Pal won't be defenseless during a fight.
      2) The lack of evolution complain doesn't make too much sense when as you progress the game, you naturally get stronger Pals. Hell, if you actually put some time and effort, you can actually get some end game juggernauts like Astegon and Shadowbeak, but that's mostly recommended when you are in the mid game as you have access to level 3 kindling Pals like Blazehowl and Ragnahawk and preparing Breeding cakes doesn't take too long.
      3) The overly simplistic type chart is actually at the game favor, as it makes every type balanced and even having some perks like grass moves greatly slowing down your opponent with the vine effect or some Dark moves being able to poison your oponent, unlike the type chart in Pokemon where lot of types like Ice and Rock are very shitty while some like Fairy are very OP. As for the rest, I think you are making an unfair comparation as naturally you shouldn't expect stuff like this to be exactly like Pokemon. Sometimes, for better or worse, you need to adapt to the game mechanic which is why other games in the same genre like Yokai Watch are different in this regard.

      Hurts? Draws blood? Did palworld hurt Pokémon’s sales numbers? My understanding is that Pokémon is currently on an upward trend from a prior low. Just cuz palworld had some success doesn’t have any negative indication for game freak. Just cause you’re happy another game was able to ride on the success of Pokémon doesn’t mean game freak is bothered by it in any way. In fact, the Japanese entertainment industry as a whole is notorious for being out of touch and ignorant of anything outside of the Japanese market.

    • @Nyxcha
      @Nyxcha Před 2 měsíci

      @@campomambo It didnt hurt pokemon's sales. pokemon did that to itself
      card sales are in decline due to end of lock down, and the controversy of 2023 minors US National championship (the person winning 2-0 got disqualified right as he won game 3 because "he didnt give his prefered pronoun to the judge 2 hours agp"
      VG Tournaments are rather unpopular atm after the disaster that was Japan Pokemon Worlds where 80% of North Americans, 60% of european, and 30% of Korean players all got disqualified due to a change in what pokemon were legal or not (they were legal in home regions, but in jp they decided no they not anymore)
      and SV, besides being the first game in pokemon history to be FORCED to give refunds, has flat out stagnated at 23million sales (this is when they had to start giving refunds, and they have refused to announce updated sales after. so either they never got above this point, or they never recovered this after the refunds nintendo forced them to give), and is STILL being hammered left and right as a poorly made game rushed by greed.
      Palworld made pokemon bleed, by showing that pokemon fans ARE WILLING to play other creature catchers. they aren't blindly loyal like during Temtem or Yokai Watch. They are aware pokemon games are in a bad state and are looking for other games to give them what they want.
      Pokemon bleeding just means that they don't have as secure a fanbase as they had in past years when the playerbase was reliably positive to them. Now the playerbase is generally neutral to negative.
      and lastly....the anime......which STILL has not released in english at all
      released in france in december and has seen viewership drop like a rock from its opening.
      and even the japanese release of the anime is starting to show signs of stagnation as JP tubers talk about how the characters arent growing.
      Pokemon Direct is coming up in 10 days. we'll see if pokemon has a plan to regain its fandom's trust. or if fans will start branching out even more.
      tldr; Palworld making Pokemon Bleed just means that Palworld showed that now is a good time for creature catcher competitors to try their luck, as Pokemon Fan's loyalty is shakey

    • @Shaun_Jones
      @Shaun_Jones Před 2 měsíci +3

      You actually can improve your pals through breeding (to get different combinations of passive traits) and through condensing (to improve their stats); the pals just don’t change their appearance. You can also use the skill fruits to give pals new attacks and change what attacks are active at any time.
      As far as late game is concerned, there’s a guy who bred and optimized a Lamball that can take on all five tower bosses and all the legendaries, so if you’re willing to put in the hours you can make any pal viable late-game.

I loved everything about the world from its characters to the cute pokemon as a kid, but as I grew and they stayed the same I moved away and moved on. I bought Pokemon let's go Eevee as well as the diamond and pearl remake more for nostalgia reasons than any other when they released. Playing those two felt like my way of saying goodbye to the world of pokemon one last time since I know it's forever stuck in the past. I said for years that the best way for pokemon to really be a success again would be to grow up with its core audience, and palworld proved that to me.

Struggling to see the credits of that game for years is one of my formative gaming memories. I remember being very excited for Pokémon Conquest back when that came out since it was in the same genre and being a little bit disappointed with it even though it was a pretty good spin-off title.
