    I feel like an aspect you may have missed is how the game's unhinged design lent itself to many "shocking" viral moments shared on social media. Things like, catching a human, slaughtering your adorable pals, catching a pal you should be able to right now, and someone's house burning down after being attacked by fire Pals. Combine this with recognizable streamers reacting to these and you have a recipe for a lot of word of mouth to be generated.

      I don't think it's about shutting down Palworld, but rather about specific desings. Not All pals pull from pokemon, some are original, and until the game released, not every pal was out there to be analyzed. Unlike a C&D when fangames straight up use nintendo IP, a litigation process - especially one that deals with plagiarism - probably has nintendo now consulting with multiple IP lawyers and consultants to asses on a 1:1 pokemon design to pal design basis, how strong of a case they would have. Not saying that it would happen but also saying that there's plenty of reason why nothing was done until release. Listen to the Kit & Krysta video on the subject, they used to work with PR within nintendo and they give some great insider knowledge on how they operate

      Normally I’d agree but if they DID steal character models, you wouldn’t be able to prove that until after the game launched. I think The Pokemon Company (not Nintendo because contrary to popular belief I don’t think they’d be the ones filing legal action here) thought this game fly under the radar as ‘just another cheap knock off’ and even now I think they’d rather not draw attention to it. They probably expect this will all blow over and people will have forgotten about it in six months. It’ll be interesting to see what happens either way.

      The CEO of pocket pair has been pretty open about not having a creative vision. However, I would disagree with him. I was thinking the other day that Palworld is exactly the kind of game a little kid would make if you asked them to make their dream game. They would just smash all their favorite games together so that they would have one thing that had everything they loved. It's a seemingly immature vision but it is a vision, and honestly one that the industry is severely lacking these days. So many games these days feel like they work out the monetization of the game before they work out how to make the game fun. Palworld decided to throw everything they liked into a blender and then tweak it until all its systems fit together, then they threw it out at a budget price with no microtransactions. Their primary concern was making the game fun, rather than being original or finding ways to make a feedback loop that nickles and dimes their customers.
      The question now is how much will they commit to the game? If they continue to support it I can see it being a billion dollar franchise. If they don't. well... I'll still say I got my moneys worth. Though I think I would be disappointed. The game is a lot of fun but I think its also impossible to play it without seeing the potential for it to be even better.

    There's a whole lot that's said that amounts to saying that the game has no creative vision but I really couldn't disagree more. They clearly had a creative vision, something that took hold so strongly that they had to pivot from their other game to make this. They ended up giving us what we all didn't know we wanted and they created whole new ways to approach the genre. You're not just looking for Pals to fill your team, like in Pokemon, but you're also looking for all sorts of reasons to scoop them up and improve your base, collect traits, and more. you see here. the thing is.. and what i respect (its not a lot of respect but its there) about the Developers at PocketPair, they where designing the game to be fun. not groundbreaking, not original, but fun. and i think that is what a lot of game companies these days are missing. for most of the big companies... its not about fun anymore, games feel like a second job some days. i cant remember the last time i have been excited for anything made by Activision or EA. but these companies stopped making games more fun and just started selling us the same game over and over again, because they where too focused on profit to have fun. and as much as you can argue that nothing that PocketPair are doing is original... you can say that the idea's they copied came together in such a new way. Pokémon's problem is, at this point it feels like once you have played one you have played them all. sure they add a new type every now and then or a new gimmick that only stays for one game but its core is still 'just a Pokémon game' the same turn based strategy. it does get stale after a while.

    • @cathygrandstaff1957
      @cathygrandstaff1957 Před 4 měsíci +1

      Yeah but maybe that’s part of what the Pokémon fanbase wants. If there’s a type of game you like and a franchise fits into it you don’t really want the franchise to try to reinvent itself just to please fans that don’t like that genre. Take Final Fantasy for example: after 10 they basically started trying to reinvent what had been a stellar turn based RPG into an action RPG because they thought that’s what the American demographic wanted and classic Final Fantasy fans are pissed because we haven’t had a good Final Fantasy in over a decade. Sure each game feels different, but is that a good thing when it’s a bad kind of different? On the other hand Dragon Quest uses more or less the same battle system it always has and is more popular than ever because it scratches that turn based demographic that Final Fantasy abandoned.

    I get that there's obvious Pokemon parallels, but the Monster Tamer genre IS a genre. Games like Digimon, Monster Rancher, Azure Dreams, Beyblade, Yu-Gi-Oh GX, Dragon Drive, there are just so many games along this concept. While Pokemon has become the de facto name in the arena it is by no means the only game in town, and it never has been.

      Exactly, and it’s not copying the genre tropes that skeptics take issue with, it’s the blatant “legally distinct” approach to design, almost across the board. If this game featured fully original character designs I think there’d be no controversy whatsoever, BUT let’s be real, this was a calculated decision. They KNEW pursuing copypasta designs would take care of their marketing in and of itself, and the tried and tested survival/crafting tropes would keep people hooked (speaking as someone who they work on lol). I don’t plan on touching this game for multiple reasons, I don’t begrudge people enjoying a product made to be a product, I REALLY wish GameFreak/The Pokemon Company would step up their game… but I do not like the precedent that rewarding this kind of design sets.

A couple years from now and so much could go to shit because people follow this game’s example but make use of even more legally/morally questionable tactics. Guess we’ll see.

      @@D3stinySm4sher Direhowl looks just like Tiger from Monster Rancher, as well as Ranga from That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime... and every other hyped-up wolf-type in anime. Same with the Penguins and most of the rest, because they're based on real-world animals. It wasn't soulless, they wanted to make a fun game that people would just enjoy, rather than attempting to tell people what they want.
      Even if we look at Pal Spheres, SO many other ways this has been done in monster-tamer games. Spheres, Balls, Cards, Mystery Discs, Sigils, they've all been done in anime, manga, and video games. There is literally no way for them to make a monster-taming game without leaning into one of those territories. But they DID innovate, giving a vast open world, adding in elements of survival akin to ARK, fun ways of traversal like the Glider a la Breath of the Wild and a few other games that used gliders.
      And ALL of these games generally base their monster on real-world creatures or mythical ones. They ALSO allow the capture of humans, which is a bit of a first. Also, no insane laundry list of guys just standing around in the tall grass waiting for you to get in eyeline before challenging you to a Pal Battle. The idea of getting raided, being able to PROPERLY use your Pokemon outside of combat to build up your bases. You don't really buy Spheres in the game, you craft them yourself, and can eventually automate the process by finding better blueprints, and upgrading spheres as you go. Dragons? We've done pretty much everything you can do with dragons, so whatever they designed was, again, going to hit something.
      Cities Skylines was born out of SimCity dropping the ball, and dropping it hard. NO ONE gave them crap for it. Basically EVERY FPS game is built off of Quake, and the Unreal Tournament engine. It's not that they ripped off Pokemon, it's that Pokemon is so ubiquitous, and holding over 1000+ creatures, so there was never going to be a world where they didn't get compared to Pokemon.

Even though the released title as not much in common with a pokemon game, gameplay wise. But in a world where on average about 38 games per day are released on Steam, you need something to stand out. Even if its just a marketing ploy, because otherwise, Palworld is pretty unimaginative. There are tons of Open-World-Survival-Crafting games outthere, even with AI buddies. Its solide take on the genre, but nothing groundbreaking. Even quiet far from it. But is was marketed well from the start, and that was the key to success.

A lot of what was "stolen" is in a better concept than the original. Considering that this is an indie dev it still feels solid when playing it.

    I think to me part of what's making Palworld stick out and connect with people is its confidence and transparity about what it is. In a world with Raid Shadow Legends pretending it's this big epic MMO, Call of Duty is this prestiegous brand, or even Candy Crush pretending it's a cute match 3 game and not a slot machine, it's refreshing to see ridiculous slop like this come out and just be open about the fact that it's just slop.
    It's like somebody took one of those shitty mobile game ads and actually made it into a real game without any strings attached. You see a Pokemon holding a gun and you know the game is kind of garbage, but it's compelling garbage and you're getting exactly what you thought you were buying. It honestly kind of reminds me of Vampire Survivors.

    I don’t think Pokémon will add guns just because I think in universe humans never developed what we think of as conventional weapons because Pokémon were more powerful than the most primitive guns. I mean think about musket vs squirtle, you fire the musket once, the squirtle takes a bit of damage and then blasts you to high heaven while you’re trying to reload. And of course if guns count as a normal type attack they’d be completely ineffective against ghosts and mostly useless against rock and steel. So I think there was more tactical incentive to develop Pokeball technology to contain Pokémon instead of making weapons to fight them. I also kind of like the fact that Pokémon, unlike most RPGs including most monster tamers, has our human child protagonist being virtually helpless except for what they can get Pokémon to do for them. So I think having the trainer participate doesn’t feel like Pokemon. Eh, maybe it would make sense if they did something like a game about the Great War in Pokémon X and Y and have your protagonist be a young warrior joining the fight with their Pokémon.

    The real lesson of Palworld is no matter who is using an old or new idea, if you aren't utilizing it in a way that is fun, then you're the one lacking creativity and talent. There was a clear and deliberate strategy when it came to what game mechanics to combine to create an addictive feedback loop that constantly cycles between different aspects that all interact with one another seamlessly. I cant understand the 'souless' argument when so much effort was put to making these mechanics work together. If anything the fact it looks so similar to pokemon is not so much copying for the sake of stealing ideas, but rather to prove a point that game devs with all these tools and assets aren't taking advantage of what they have, leaving its potential hidden, and this is what you can do with it.
    besides theres no such thing as a truly original concept.

But given the quickly approaching genAI storm at the shores of creative industries, I feel endorsing and defending this kind of behavior is… not great? And anyone saying “ah but it’s slightly different, ah look at the topology”, if they know *anything* about 3D pipeline for games they’d know that you often remesh when sculpting or adding to an existing mesh, to merge it all together, and towards the end you tend to retopologize the whole thing to make it more performant, and then bake the details down into normal maps. The only way the meshes would be identical is if they had only recolored these things

Set it during Pokemon's equivalent of the Age of Exploration on a procedurally generated continent as a reason for gameplay mechanics. Hostile Pokemons will attack your town at night until the player(s) take down the alpha/king/queen of said Pokemon. Increase town level to unlock cozy crafting recipes and new NPC who'll move in who'll help build your town. Actually depict lore of the Pokedex, like sheer a sheep Pokemon to get wool or ghost Pokemon that will try to kidnap NPC from your town. If they want to risk a T rating, include theme of Pokemon Conquest as you diplomatically or aggressively navigate rival colonies, pirates, and bandits with real time tactics combat.

      They will not. Pokémon will never let your character physically attack pokémon themselves, so there will never be the “fighting alongside your buddy” that Palworld has. I also don’t think they’ll ever let you have more than one of your own captive pokémon running around at a time, although it seems they could. And would they let you give them a bunch of tasks to carry out? I feel like the answer would be “no”, because they’re aware they’re already riding the line of enslavement and cockfighting - they have never, and will never, add anything else remotely edgy to their recipe, lest it topple their whole house of cards. Which is why the void they’ve left is so huge for Palworld to step into and become a hit.

    • @ArchOfWinter
      @ArchOfWinter Před 4 měsíci

      @@johnnyjohnson6643 Palworld takes things to an extreme. There are lots of Pokemon's role in the world depicted in the anime and pokedex lore that we never see in game. This is why NPC characters are important in my concept, because they'll bring or catch their own Pokemon partners so the player isn't the only person with an army of Pokemon. The goal would be to build a town we see in the anime.
      The T-rated scenario would be close to what was implied how Pokemon can be used Pokémon Generations Episode 2: The Chase but with tech of a 1400s~1500s era setting.
      In the Legends game, Pokemon can attack the players, so allowing the players to defend themselves to buy time for escape or alert the town should still be acceptable in gameplay, especially for a time period without any modern weapons. Human character won't be able to start a fight without Pokemon, should still not be able to defeat Pokemon by themselves, and shouldn't even be able to aim at docile Pokemon.
