  • Why does my steering wheel bind up when I try to turn and the 4wd is on? You know how many times I have seen this, and heard this? So here is a full on explanation, not just why the steering wheel binds, but what your 4wd is actually doing beneath your feet.
Side note. This is my first time filming in front of a green screen with Davicnci Resolve. How did I Do? Honest opinions please!

This is the exact talk I was trying to explain to my wife when she was trying to tell me to proactively put the car in 4H on the interstate at freeway speeds, because she was worried about snow.

    Wow and thank you. I’m a 49 yrs old, 1st time Jeeper. I have a 2014 JK, 2 door.
Thanks for your vid. Most people in north TX. laugh when I ask questions about how Jeeps or (4x4) work in general.
    I appreciate you.

You need to regularly engage for a short period to make sure it is lubricated and working.

What’s missing here it to clarify the difference between a simple transfer case and center differential. In a car with a center differential you can drive 4WD all the time. Some carc dob’t even have a way to disengage it. The problem with a simple transfer case it that it’s NOT a differential, so it cannot diferentiate speeds of the front and rear axles, ant these are different when turning. That’s why the transmission binds, especially in sharp turns. The wheels need to slip a bit to let go the tension building up. On dry pavement - the resistance could be high enough to break the transmission instead of slipping a wheel.

The mojave gladiator has a different transfer case than sport/Sahara or Rubicon. It's actually in between both.
What 4×4 system does the Mojave use? The Gladiator Mojave utilizes the proven Command-Trac 4×4 system to crawl effortlessly through sand and over tough terrain. The system features a 2.71:1 low-range gear ratio thanks to a two-speed transfer case.

Thank you! Great, clear explanation....and I found your maiden green screen adventure very watchable! I do have a question, I've used 4x4 on slushy or powdery-packed snow and wonder why I can steer without binding. Is the resistance my tires are experiencing still less than on dry road even if I can't sense it or any reduced traction. It's all physics at the end of the day isn't it!

Thank you, and new to Jeep, I though there was something wrong with my Jeep as the wheels would give me resistance when I Engage the 4x4 on drive pavement. Thanks

Great video. I just got a Rubicon Gladiator and wondering if I should leave the traction control on all the time. I'm guessing it only disengages in rear or front/rear lock. Still trying to figure everything out.

This may be a really stupid question, but how exactly does the 4 w drive work in the Jeep compass latitude with auto 4 wheel? It has the mud, snow etc.. It sounds horrible on mine, has since I bought it. Do you have anything explaining common issues with it?

If the road is icy and the tires are slipping, can we drive in 4h mode on the normal road? I don't want to go off-road, I just want to get home safely and not have the rear tires slip

the jeeps should have 4x4 always active as other cars maybe and then you can lock the diferencial and shift 4H,4L

Because they are set up to rotate freely while turning, and are not trying to match the rear tires power....
