    Two wheels are driven in a 2WD drive car and 4 wheels are driven in a 4wd or 4x4. But what you are seeing is the effect of an open differential, which essentially gives all the power to a slipping wheel. What you want for slippery conditions is a limited-slip differential, which helps balance things out in slick conditions.
    I'll go into a bit more detail.
    At the driven axle is the Differential. What this is, is a set of gears that allow each driven wheel to rotate at different speeds. It does this by using the engines output to drive each axle with equal torque. This is a little counter intuitive, and many people think that it works differently, but this is how it works; an open diff provides EQUAL torque to both wheels.
    but because the torque is equal, if one wheel sees less force against it than the other, it can rotate faster. This is so that, around corners, the outer wheel can go faster than the inner wheel.
    The problem is that, in very low traction conditions, one of the wheels may have so little grip that the engine cannot provide much torque, it simply rises in rpm's and spins that wheel, while building so little torque doing so that the other wheel does not move at all; and the car is stuck, as well as appearing to be 1 wheel drive; however, both wheels are receiving equal torque.
    A limited slip differential does what it says on the tin; it limits the difference in speed between each side, so that the side that does have grip and can move the car can receive proportionately greater torque. These diffs have performance benefits in sports cars too, and are generally seen there, as well as in high-performance AWD systems, such as Audi's Quattro, and Subaru's system.
    A locking diff, as you can probably guess, can lock the two halfs together completely, forcing them to rotate at the same speed regardless of traction on one wheel or the other. Usually seen on true off-road vehicles and 4x4's.
    An autolocker is similar to a locked diff, except it has a sort of ratchet mechanism that allows one side to advance ahead of the other. In an autolocker, the two halfs cannot rotate slower than the speed dictated by the input shaft, but a half can rotate faster, so it can still go around corners. Used in 4x4's as an alternative to lockers, but are less nice on the road.
    A spool is just a bevel gear in place of a diff, it acts like a locked diff that cannot unlock. Useless and possibly damaging on road use, for off-road use only. Also seen on some racecars. The legendary Porsche 962C used a spool.
    A welded diff is the poor mans spool, a formerly open diff that has been turned into a spool by welding certain bits together.

    I think the trucks without the locker still are able to get by if the compluter applies the brake to the slipping wheel, and the non slipping wheel gets half the power.. so in effect it is doing the same job as the locked differential, just differently. now if the power is being evenly distributed and all your tires are slipping, well, your screwed, locker or no locker.

      The algorithm controlled brake locking diffs are a great thing. Much better than a standard open diff. Now a true locker electronic or air is the real winner because it doesn't require any wheel slip or tire spin to activate. That's a huge factor in snow, mud, sand, etc. That's also the reason the gm g80 auto locker bums so many people out. It requires to much wheel spin to activate and the holes already dug by the time it kicks in. But you are 100% that a algorithm controlled traction system is a huge win compared to all open or even to a g80. I wish the new trail boss came with a a electronic locker rather than the g80. Only reason I'm planning to buy a Colorado zr2 is because I need the true lockers here in the swamps.

When the diferencial is open you can see that if a tire it’s stuck or slower the other tire would spin at a faster rate because the differential is open but both of the tires are getting power the engine is powering sending the power through the drive shaft to the differential and from the differential depending on if it’s locked open or whatever that’s how it will turn the tires

      Eloy Rodríguez yep but if one tire slips and spins the other side tire is dead in the water. Proven on a hundred slip test videos unless there is lsd or an lsd algorithm.

      No 4 runners have front lockers. Actually no stock toyota has front lockers in any of their vehicles. But if you have a trd off road or trd pro model you have the rear locker and mts and crawl control. If you have any other trim level you have atrac only but atrac is still amazing at getting you unstuck. I just made a video about atrac and mts if you check my toyota play list.

      Yep ford tremor I believe is a torsion locker and not a true full locker. but darn close and a great system that works very good.

    Would Front and Rear Trutracs apply power to all 4 wheels? I l know in a rock crawling situation its real ineffective, but for most offroad trails and overlanding would dual LSDs apply power to all 4 wheels?

      Agree 100% so many people I see stuck in the woods expected the wheels on the high edge of the hole to get them out. Literally heard that a dozen times as I pull them out. They all say "it's 4x4 I figured as long as I kept 2 side wheels high and dry I'd be ok".

      correct. 50% front and 50% rear. but doesn't change the wheel spin with one in back and one in front doing all the work until you active front and rear lockers or have a algorithm of lsd.

    My Toyota TRD pro will lock everything, front and rear.....so does my '94 chevy off road addition if you have it in 4WD and in low gear, or if the transfer case is in low.

      The tacoma only has a rear locker but the computer does have a brake locking front algorithm that helps it alot.

    All the all wheel drive systems have algorithms gm, ford ect.... I had an audi was great in the snow but its a poor mans locker it beats getting out to dig for traction to the wheel thats spinning . Im a truck guy and I wanted a body on frame front and rear locker true 4x4 so I got the zr2, your right there's not many out there , allot of these trucks and SUVs have AWD systems and there great but sometimes you need every tire working together not playing games with the brake calipers sending power everywhere. Even the 24 Tacoma does not have a front locker they cheesed out and give you crawl control thats a way to give you power to every wheel at some point but not every point, and thats why you have to crawl through everything . I found that out years ago when I was a young 4 wheeler before youtube I had to figure it out on my own its like it was a secret back in the day, but most of your snow plows are trucks with lockers and they get serious traction .

      The zr2 is the only chevy truck I'd personally buy for my needs as it has front and rear lockers. The g80 is great but not enough for what I need and gm trucks don't have and algorithms u til you get into the upper canyons trims I believe. Love the zr2 and bet you are loving it to!

    Open diffs, basically sends equal torque to both wheels if both wheels have the same amount of traction. When miss matched the max torque that can go to the wheel with traction is equal to the max torque to wheel without traction with out spinning ex: if you got 1 wheel in the air the max torque that can be sent to it with out it spinning is 0ft lbs so 0ft lbs gets sent to the wheel on the ground. AWD cars also have a open center differential, and if it doesn't have a lock button for the center diff like some AWD cars have, the engine will also only be able to send the amount of torque that the axle with least traction has before slipping to both axles. Some traction control systems will apply brakes to the wheel with least traction which increases the amount of torque to slip that wheel while sending the equal amount of torque sent to the opposite wheel ex: the wheel in the air has brake applied increases the max torque with out slipping to 40 ft lbs, then 40 ft lbs will be sent to the opposite wheel which may not be enough for forward progress so the vehicle will just lurch forward, which is why it doesnt work as well as a mechanical locker.

    In Utah, there is a very steep road to Powder Mountain ski resort where my brothers and I grew up skiing. If you figured out how to use your little front wheel drive car, you could pass people with 4WD on a steep snowy road. 😂

      I would buy a 23. It's proven and rock solid. Toyotas track record for first few years of a new vehicle are not that great. It's a problem all manufacturers have and toyora is no different. I'd personally prefer a 23 over a new 24.

      @appleztooranges in my opinion the trd off road is the better buy. The bilstein shocks on the off rd are great, and both have exact same capabilities. And since you are keeping it for a while the resell of the pro is canceled out (not that it was a huge difference dollar for dollar).

    Thats why the GM g80 is the desired diff. Just go to any wrecking yard, they are hard to find.

      g80 is a great option. but not good in snow mud or sand or rocks or really anywhere that requires slow movement to get out becuase the g80 requires the working wheel to hit 100 rpm before the g80 engages and when it engages its hard and jerky. but much better than not having it. A true locker is best if you can get one.

      @SamkoWorkShop i agree. I was more talking about factory options without spending big money 💰. I have an '81 k20 with a G80. Seems like the older ones work better than the newer ones. Just guessing based my limit experience.

      Craig Marsh I bet it does work better back then and I'm guessing it engaged faster. They probably slowed it down to prevent lawsuits if it engaged to quick on slippery roads etc.

    So the diff has to open what about lunch box lockers or ratchet lockers I have both in my three jeeps or factory posi or sure grip (mopars idea of locker) or torsen diff Mazda's locker some work better than others the point is diffs absolutely don't need to be open
    Edit let's not leave out jeeps quradtrac they will move with one tire on the ground

      I left out lunch box lockers to keep it simple and since most ratchet or lunck box lockers are after market only now. But they do work good but can be dangerous on slippery roads.

    How come you guys didn't drive with front and rear lockers on and stop on the hill like you did on the other 4X4's. Questionable to say the least. Please explain.

      2 different trucks. and i was showing a clip from a previous video i made about the limited slip button in 2wd with my tacoma. the video with the zr2 that haad front and rear lockers was not mine. I explained it all in the video. not sure what was questionable about it. I could of got up the the hill in my tacoma even in 2wd with just momentum if i wanted to. but i was making a video and proving a point.

      Cause when you have lockers they tend to get wheel hop, axle in rear wants to twist that what traction bars are used for, to prevent the truck from Monday the hop up and down

      very true! I left out the HD trucks as they are not really good in the woods due to their size. at least not here in the east where its tight. But you are 100% correct. and the power wagon has front and rear lockers too.

      Correct. Cause 2wd is really 1 wheel drive and 4wd is really 2wd in those conditions so you ate actually doubling your traction.

      Yes and Tremor F-150 & Super Duty, and G-wagon, and Ineos Grenadier, for starters. Also Ford offer the Torsen front locking LSD through it's performance catalogue to fit on any of it's F-150's with warranty.

      @@Jason-Samko well you can buy a 2007 or newer Ford F-150 and take it to your Ford dealer to add the front Torsen diff as a factory approved/dealer installed front hard locking LSD, and it is way better then a front E-locker and almost anyone can afford it if they choose to.

    Kia AWD, but its not. The ONLY tIme the rear is involved, is when the front slips. Thats NOT AWD, thats part time AWD. Now to be honest, I live in Ice and Snow country. It has legitimately taken my stupid ass everywhere I have ever pointed it and never gotten stuck.

    The title, the way you have your chart, and the way you explained this will be misleading for many noobs. Fact is 2WD = 2WD = 2 wheels are receiving power and 4WD = 4WD = all 4 wheels are receiving power. That ONLY changes IF you are stuck or spinning, or hard cornering, in basic differential systems. You are going to lead noobs to think that only 1 wheel is being powered in their 2WD cars etc. And as you touched upon, many vehicles have LSD or Posi, locking diffs, or advanced AWD systems that send the power where it needs to go. But generally speaking when driving a car under normal conditions 2WD = 2WD and 4WD = 4WD. There is, after all, a reason they DON'T call a 2WD a 1WD or a 4WD a 2WD ;)

      It's not misleading when look at the thumbnail I used. I didn't show a truck going down the road. And most people want 4 wheel drive for slippery conditions. In those conditions everything I say is 100% true. And I talked about lockers and lsd etc. Things that most vehicles still don't come with especially trucks and suvs.

      It’s not really misleading when you consider that many things are expressed in terms of performance in worst case scenario, which is where the actual “rubber meets the road” so to speak (pun intended). In the worst case scenario, indeed a traditional 4x4 acts like a 2x4 in terms of wheels receiving usable power.

    So basically all 4x4 truck are a scam unless you have after market parts your truck is useless

      Not really as a 4x4 is double the capabilities As a 2wd truck. But the reality of open differentials is a real eye opener when you realize how they work.

    My Toyota 4Runner is AWD and has a “center diff locker” so I’m still lost lol

      A center locker just means that when you go into 4 low and engagement the center lock its a true even power distribution to the rear and to the front. still have the same problem with one wheel in front and one wheel in back doing the work. but the front end get 50% and the rear end gets 50%
