One of the most popular drinks in Malaysia is probably 'Air Mata Kucing'. It is a herbal drink which is nutritious and refreshing especially when the sun is scorching. It is also extremely delicious. It is no wonder that 'Air Mata Kucing' secured the 6th place in the list of the "50 most delicious drinks from around the world". The herbal taste in this healthy drink is not at all over-powering. In fact, it is soothingly refreshing. So, be sure to try this nutritious and healthy drink.
'Air Mata Kucing' in Kuala Lumpur was made popular by a stall stationed at a street corner in Chinatown/Petaling Street. This stall has a history of more than three decades and had even expanded its business to shopping malls. The popularity of the herbal drink is obvious with the long queue in front of the stall daily. Many years ago, the drinks were sold served in metal bowls when customers enjoy the drink at the stall. However, this is no longer the practice these days as styrofoam cups are now used.
To create this delicious drink at home, only four ingredients are needed. The base of this drink is made out of monk fruit which is also known as 'Lo Hon Guo' in Chinese. It gives colour to the drink and also acts as a natural sweetener. The abundant benefits of monk fruit are widely known in the world of traditional Chinese medicine. Dried longan which is high in vitamins is also added to this drink to sweeten it. In this recipe, I choose the darker coloured dried longan which is sweeter and more intense in flavour although it is absolutely fine to use the lighter coloured dried longan too. The classic 'Air Mata Kucing' that is made popular by the stall in Petaling Street (Chinatown) is quite sweet as rock sugar is added to it. Since it is served with lots of ice cubes, the sweetness is somehow diluted. Rock sugar is optional, if you do not like the drink too sweet.
Fresh winter melon strips make this herbal drink extra special as they soften during the boiling process, thus giving the melt-in-the-mouth feel while drinking. This is definitely a delightful drink not to be missed. Serve it hot or cold with lots of ice cubes, according to your preference.

Thanks for sharing this nutritious Malay recipe.👍
I am accustomed to wintermelon in salty entrees or heart warming soups, rarely as a sweet treat other than pastry.
Long an is translated as Dragon's eye.
Instead of rock sugar and winter melon , I add honey dates for more flavours
The best herba drink ever
I always make air mata kucing with chinese dates for milkbooster purpose...

Loveeeee ur video. Love from indonesia ❤
I tried it yesterday n it was successful. As for the monk fruit, I did not put the skin into the water but just the fruit of the monk fruit into it as it has too strong of a medicine taste. I have never tried it with winter melon before but it was an added bonus. The melon taste like a jelly when it's served cold n it was really delicious. Thanks for this recipe n it really a good drink to drink when the weather is freaking hot (much better then bubble tea).
My favourite drink. I always loved the herbal smell so aromatic.
I love it ...😘😘❤❤❤👍👍

Air mata kucing
I bough logan from cane, and its not brown like that, just like water, why leh?
that's dried longan. that's the common type of longan used for drinks.
I watched another video which suggests not to add the inner part of the fruit cuz it gives you more phlegm and the taste would be too sweet.
Can I add few pandan leaves?
Sure!
Hi Rasa!
for pregnant women i'snt ok ?? look so yummy😄
You're right, extremely yummy! :) I'm not too sure if it is suitable for pregnant woman. It's better to go to your local Chinese medicine hall and consult them. All the best!
