Using the Johnson Century/Citation as Underspins?!

- In this episode, Willie talks about one of his more unusual fishing methods involving some of the older Johnson reels, such as the Century 100A, Citation 110A, and the 45th Anniversary Century. These special spincast reels can even fill the role of an underspin!

I inherited two Wright & McGill, Stream and Lake underspin reels. There is a plate that you push on the front of the reel to release the line. They were my grandmother and grandfathers reels. They were avid fly fishermen. I didn't realize until now that they probably used these reels with their fly rods. Way cool!

This is one of those things that you either like it or you don’t. It’s not for everyone but everyone should at least try.. Bass Pro had their lower end fly rods on sale.. check them out on line and see if they still are.. (White River)

🤠Hey there!
That’s easy, if you have it set up now like a normal upright spin cast reel, the black button behind the crank (the anti-reverse switch) switch it to “Left” then hold the reel facing down, and you should now be retrieving with your left hand in the counter clockwise motion..
If you already have line on the spool, you’ll have to take the cap off, then the nut on the rotor, the rotor, the hair pin holding the spool down, take the spool off and flip it over, then put it back together.. if you don’t have line on it, you won’t have to do that part. You can just put your line on and it will wind it on correctly.
I’ll see if I can do a short but it may be a few days. But If you have any questions, just ask.
Me and a buddy of mine were doing this back in the early 80's you could cast a 1/8 oz jig with a twirl tail grub a mile.

I saw one of your other video on the johnson reels on a fly rod and decided to try it with my century reel duable but not as comfortable as a underspin. I have the zebco like yours and the diawa both work way better imo. I have my century and recently aquired citation on matching bass pro 5 foot rods.

It’s all in what feels right to you.
Fishing is one of those things that has all kinds of different ways, styles, and techniques, to make it happen.
When I figured out how to do this, it was one of those things that just presented itself and I gave it a shot. For me and the places I fished, this technique worked out well. There are better reels out there for that scenario, reels that were designed as nothing but underspins, like Shakespeare (which I’ll be doing an episode on in the very near future.) but what I liked was the versatility of the Johnson. Being an upright spin cast as well as an underspin. It’s cool to have a reel that can do both..
