HP Envy 14 - An INCREDIBLE Performer That Proves We've BEEN RIPPED OFF FOR YEARS!!

- The HP Envy 14 is the best performing Intel Ultrabook i've ever reviewed. What's even more amazing, is that it achieves this with only an i5 processor. It is proof, finally, that we have been misled and ripped off for years about whether to get an i5 or an i7 processor. This also applies to AMD too. Grab some popcorn and enjoy the show!

Josh is the only one who actually does a review. I really don't find anyone else bringing real value to the table.
He's amazing, yes

Just Josh, Lisa (MobileTechReview), Dave2D, Matthew Monitz, Andrew Marc David, and The Tech Chap. They're all awesome reviewers.
He looks like the tech version of Harry Potter!

@Laura Brown shut up
Not too long ago I've learned about your channel and the "insane amount of work you do on it" (in your own word😂).
First let me say that by using just "insane" you are selling yourself short.
So far and honest to God you are my most trusted laptop reviewer. Always on point and always mindful for us "the users". So as insignificant as it may seem I wanna say thank you for being on CZcams and doing what you do, and I wish you all prosperity and success.
Second I have a small suggestion! It would be awesome if you could make a video on ryzen laptops (best for each price class, and best overall), also do you think that people should wait for nex gen in perspective to (normal flow users, producers, coders, and heavy users).
Thank you
Stay safe.
Hi. Firstly thank you very much. I mean that. Secondly, I actually did alot of Ryzen laptops last year. I'd say the best ones are Lenovo Slim 7 Pro, Lenovo Legion 5, HP Omen. The Ryzen 5000 CPUs are taking time to come in, that being said I do have a Asus G15 sitting next to me that will be the next one I do :)
@@JustJoshTech thanks 👍 really helpful!
Can't wait for the G15 review.
As a developer, I really appreciate that you always test compile times, database queries etc. and not just video export times for your benchmarks.
I also like this. Plus Linux compatibility test is huge help.
@@ChetanKhilosiya yep
Should I get this one for coding? As a Cs student?
I cannot believe that you only have 100k subs, the production quality of this video is so good, that I genuinely thought you would have at least had a couple million subs. I was surprised to see so few. Keep up the fantastic work man!
I agree that 100+k subs doesn’t make this channel justice, but on the other hand he’s only about a year on CZcams. 100k subs in a year is a lot, not just for a tech reviewer!
I only even consider buying a laptop after a Josh review
Great review and thanks for going extra miles to clarify the myths about the processor performance. Notebookcheck also confirmed same about the i5 model of this laptops, beating i7 in other Ultraportables. In other Ultraportables, going for i7 may be due to having the 96EU version of the XE Graphics, but for this, sticking with i5 is the best choice since this having a dedicated GPU.
Hey Josh I’m all the way from Africa Zimbabwe and your reviews have been magnificent. Recently bought an Hp pavilion 15 cs 10th gen and thanks to your channel review 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Josh, thank you for your reviews! I've not educated myself in the tech world as my focus has always been elsewhere - so it's been helpful to jump into your channel and get a better idea of what to look for. That being said, I'm looking for a laptop that is 'good enough' for editing photos and some video - but on a budget. ($8-900 range) I've been leaning toward the HP envy 14 for a few weeks (why I watched this review), but am curious if you'd choose a different laptop for the job. I'm a hobbyist, not a professional. I appreciate your time and am aware that these open forum comments don't always receive responses - in which case, I've been gleaning from your expertise within videos you've shared. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!!
I for one would love to see how you setup your laptop's and what settings/tricks/tips/apps/mods you use to get the most out of them!
Keep up the great work as always Josh! Your killing it right now! Hardest working (and my favourite) CZcams in the tech space! 🔥
Josh, you honestly make the best reviews for laptops I've seen on my latest rabbithole for buying a new laptop. Keep up the great work. Cheers from Germany!
Another great review. On point and direct! Thank you Josh. Hope to see you using a desktop pc someday in the future (and vlogs about it :D).
Informative to the max as always Josh. You really take pains to look in from the end-user's perspective.. 2 thumbs up.
PS: Please post a video on the new upcoming HP Elite Folio with the new Qualcomm processor whenever you are able to get one for review. Really appreciate, thanks
I have an older version of the Envy 13 I got 3 years ago. It’s been super fast, super quiet and super reliable. And it was reasonably priced too! This HP Envy line is really a hidden gem!
I’m thinking of getting an Envy 13. How long does the battery last?
'We've BEEN RIPPED OFF FOR YEARS!!'

Hey josh, love your reviews, they give stats i really need as i game and program, im thinking of getting the omen 15 ryzen 7 4800 rtx2060, should i get it or wait for a ryzen 5000 one. And is this envy 14 a good option against the omen 15?
Excellent. You saves me $$$ here. Just getting ready to pull the trigger on an Envy 14" with the i7 on the HP site. Thanks for the advice!
You make me feel good about my recent choice. Envy x360 15 with the 12th gen i5, 16gb ram, 1tb ssd, 1440 screen, with a 4gb gpu. I feel like it maximizes performances all around at a budget price and not overheating like a more powerful setup.
I just feel so welcomed every time I see your videos. They are so much informative and helpful too. I'm wanting to buy a laptop for programming within few months. Glad I know someone whos video will be of help
I'm really glad!
Thanks Josh 😊 sjch valuable information as a editor 👍
As always excellent, concise and complete review
awesome review. it was pleasing to hear the no nonsense analysis of the cooling solution viz the other laptops on the market. i particularly appreciated the "who is this for" section to justify why such a good laptop was difficult to recommend. subbed
@Josh - Thanks for the content & details, as always! To answer your question: This laptop is for people like me who want something more portable and stylish than a 15" battlestation, who need an outdoor-capable screen, good battery-life, a microSD card slot, and want slightly better performance than Intel XE graphics (or way better performance than Vega integrated graphics), for light gaming and CZcams content creation. Since 13-14" AMD thin-and-light laptops are nearly unobtainable right now, this HP Envy 14" is pretty darned close to ideal - for me, if no one else!
I actually *love* almost everything about the Razer Book 13 I just picked up, _except_ the Razer's keyboard is terrible! Shallow key travel with a mushy bottom and if you don't hit the keys in the middle, they don't register. It ruins an otherwise *incredible* laptop with amazing build-quality! (The only other bummer is its lack of dedicated GPU)
Hi, Josh. Great review and analysis over Intel, and OEMs shenanigans. I've been following tiger lake throughout 2020 due to pandemic boredom, and I've seen its true potential with the razer book 13. Glad you put it up to video.
Shame you didn't have battery life test of the envy 14, but I could guess how it performs.
Edit: okay I'm an idiot. You mention the battery life. I just wasn't paying attention.
Your review is exhaustive. if I'm looking for a laptop, I just need to watch your video and presto, I can already make an informed decision. thank you for raising the bar for reviews Josh
Very useful vid for me, great stuff Josh! Very interested in how the graphics performance is noticeably better than the Spectre 14... Might have to take that laptop off my list.
Josh deserves a shout out.
I haven't seen more such tech reviewer addressing what issues they face in day-to-day performance and tasks.
Just like any competition, CZcams has turned into a rat race - priortizing montization over information.
Just posting a video same day they got their hands-on to a device.
Being a tech enthusiast, who watches reviews and tech videos for entertainment. Thank you for keeping your viewer well-informed. 😊
Kudos to you, man.
Keep up the good work! ❤️

hey josh, what do you think of the Huawei matebook 14. i mean from what i can read it has everything, 4800h, a 2160x1440 400 nit display, only down side is that it has an integrated vega 7 gpu and no upgradable ram(il be using it for programming and no video editing or gaming), I just have a weird feeling about it thats why im waiting, i found no reviews on the laptop and thought that you might be able to help. also thank you so much for the videos man, I honestly learned a lot from you so please continue the great work.
In my opinion any review of a laptop with a screen resolution taller than 16x9 should include an assessment of the readability of alphanumeric characters. I know this almost must be subjective, but Josh's report of the number of Excel lines he could comfortably read (about 7:50) was as valuable a metric as I've heard. I went through this part of the video three times. Subscribed.
Great and informative video as always
Please review the Eluktronics rp-15 with the 3060 and btw i love your videos you really improved
this video felt outstanding in regards to its quality. So well done, great review. I'm thinking about buying this one or the OMEN. I'm a web developer, student that plays esports titles, I think it fits my use case greatly!
I'm currently weighing my options for the new laptop. Your insights are gonna help alot!.
Much appreciated 🙏
Hey josh, nice video. I was wondering if you would make a "how to take care of your laptop" kind of video. I've been looking everywhere for one, and as a fan, I'd appreciate your input on this.
Hey Josh ! I'm actually searching a new labtop for many differents usages like gaming (only eSports game like League of Legend and Rocket League), video editing sometimes and all day usage (web, video and office pack) that have at least one day battery life. But I have only 1000€ budget. What PC do you recommend between Mac book air M1, HP Pavillion 14 with all options, or wait for the Lenovo slim 7 Pro ?
Thank you for your videos which are wonderful and sorry for my bad English I'm french😅
Your reviews are easily the best I've seen on CZcams for laptops. I'll be buying a new laptop in the summer and honestly I'm happy trusting your recommendations with my money.
Thank you for the great content and effort , really an honest review
Another really excellent in depth review of a laptop covering aspects users want to know about. Like others have said the content you put out has to be some of the best out there. Thanks again!

Yes, Josh's reviews are always High Quality and his work is Impressive and well thought out, Super Smart!. Thank you for all your work and effort Josh, we truly appreciate it and I refer people to your site all the time.
Wonderfull video! Thanks!
Hey Josh, there’s a good reason Intel charges more for the i7 versions, and that reason is binning. i7 chips are generally no different than the i5 chips, except the i7 chips hit better core clocks at a given voltage, because of the higher quality binned silicon. So going for an i7 would still give you a good ~200MHz boost without increasing the power consumption of the chip.
Just josh = just the best laptop reviews. Great quality and honesty. Thank you!
Hi Josh thanks for the review. Do you think 2 in 1 version of this will be released?
Hi. Love your reviews. Absolutely on point. I want to buy a laptop for work (multitasking), please advice if the HP Pavilion 14 dv0058tu fits the category. What are the pros and cons....Thanks!

Im looking for a good laptop to run animation and illustration programs with a separate digital drawing tablet. Im just trying to find a good laptop to draw with. Do you have any suggestions?
I also would like to use it for gaming at times.
I was told in a review of the Dell Inspiron 5510 that the Intel Iris Xe Graphics can handle 4K Video Editing. I tried it and it was pretty much unusable. This is why I like honest reviews like this. Keep up the good work Josh. 😊
guys I am looking for a laptop for my father. I found the IdeaPad 5 with ryzen 4800u and 16gb of ram, but I am a little concerned about the fact that it's all plastic and it seems very big and bulky compared to other laptops like matebooks, do you know if it's comfortable to use?
I don't actually need a laptop rn. But I keep stopping by and like bec I know you deserve it 😌 !
hi Josh, I'm a .Net programmer using Visual Studio 2019. Is this laptop enough for 3-4 years good use? or better off to more processing core like ryzen 4800h laptop?
Hey Josh, how do you think this compares to your video "i5 vs i7" where you compare 2 Dell XPS's? I confess I'm a little confused after watch this video, because they are very different perspectives.
For example, I want to buy an Ideapad 5i and I can't decide whether to choose the i5-1135G7 or pay +110$ for the i7-1165G7. To which opinion should I listen to? The one on the "i5 vs i7" video or this one?
I'm sorry for all the confusion... I apologize in advance. (Josh, or someone else, please help me out)
Great Video. I am right now on the search for a new notebook, but it's always a pain to find the "perfect" one... So far I think the ThinkPad X1 Nano (just saw ur review) would fit to me once Zoom has fixed. I was The Envy was interesting, but the heat would distrub me, so thx for that. PS: I see you've got a Garmin Forerunner ;D
Excellent review. You also confirmed my own suspicions on i5 vs i7 processors in ultrabooks. If the performance on this CPU is comparable to Intel's own 6-core 10th Gen H-series chip, would that make this a sort of lighter/weaker/budget XPS 15 (both have 16:10 displays and 1650 Max Q)?
Seems suitable for an all round home office machine, probably even for a learn from home setup. However I must agree that it's price is a bit on the high side and as you mentioned gaming laptops from HP themselves can be a better deal.
I wonder if there will be an amd version like there was last year, that version ended up being much cheaper and much faster
Josh makes me want to buy all these laptops I don't need 😂
outstanding work! no one is doing this comparison
Good review! I do wonder though, would the i5 i7 answer be different, if there was no dedicated graphics in the machine?
Cause if there was no NVidia in there, I would assume, the i7 is a better performer (cause it's a cooler machine overall) than the i5
The last bit is the most valuable and is why i watch your videos...
I´ve got my HP Envy 15" last year and am pretty happy with it. Large, light, touch screen, at a very good price with Walmart - CA$1400 bucks. Big upgrade and relief for everything I do.
Great review :-)
Would you recommend it for someone for whom Yoga 7 Pro with Ryzen 4800H would otherwise be perfect, but needs a bit more GPU power?
Josh, great video. I have a question more of seeking a suggestion from you. What would be better amd 7 ryzen or intell 11 the gen, for engineering simulation like finite element analysis.
Thanks in advance !
Perfect review. Those are the reasons i always go for gaming laptops for programming.. Good thermals is very important. I can any day trade the the looks or size for performance.
Is the base version of the screen touch? Or do you have to upgrade it?
Hey Josh which laptop would you recommend overall between Hp envy and Lenovo Yoga Slim 7?
5:59 You said that Omen 15 4800H 1660ti struggled to edit your video.
-How is Envy 15 perform, compared to the Omen 15 on the same task?
(already noticed you use 1650ti)
-Suppose you get the same GPU, which one would you prefer for video editing? Can you please explain the reasons?
So how would you rate with dell Inspiron 14 5000 i5 11 gen? I heard the battery performance and noice is an issue with envy series.
So what did you said for a student that works most of the time with excel, but want to play some minor games ( FM,Fortine), The i5 with the dedicated GPU, or the i7 with the Xe gpu?
Such a great great great review! Thank you
Hi Josh. Great review.
Awesome review🙏🏾🙏🏾
so helpful. Thank you for this stellar video
Thank you for another thorough and informative review. I learned something new about laptop performance from this video.
From an value standpoint I totally agree with you regarding i5 vs i7. Regarding performance though I want to add my two cents: the idea behind the Tiger Lake i7 is that its able to deliver better performance because it can achieve higher frequencies while using the same power as the i5. Of course, if one lowers power, because of insufficient cooling or other reasons, the result may be an i5 clocking higher than an i7. With the same cooling however the i7 should be able to sustain higher frequencies. Thats because in general i7 get the better quality silicon dies, the ones that are less capacitive and therefore need less voltage to achieve a given frequency. So im curious on what frequencies the i7-1165G7 and i7-1185-G7 would run inside a Laptop that can cool 42 W sustained . I would expect them to run at the advertised 4,1 GHz or 4,3 GHz sustained, which in CB 20/23 equals 4,1/3,8 = 1,08 or 4,3/3,8 = 1,13 the score of the i5. At the time of writing I wasnt be able to find any reviews for the Envy 14 i7-1165G7 unfortunatly.
where we can buy this one ? any link ? if you provide a link to buy the laptops you review or like it would be very helpful though !!
Thanks Josh! I crossed out Envy 14 on my list 😁. I'll be waiting for the 2021 Envy 15. I hope it will get an AMD 5000 U processor and a GTX 1650ti!
Is this Envy suitable for an architecture student? I am planning to use a desktop for heavier workload, but the CAD models aren't that complicated yet: lots of students are using a similar or less expensive notebook such as the Asus Vivobook instead of a workstation.
Wow! Awesome review.
Thanks for the great review, Josh! May be a bit off topic, but do you think x86 architecture is outdated and will be defeated by ARM SoCs soon? Probably you could make a video to share your thoughts on this hot topic? Just an idea.
Another informative review! How does this stack up against Lenovo Yoga Slim pro14?
hey thanks for all videos. seeking for little advice .any comment about dell inspiron 2 in 1 laptop ?? good budget laaptop with touch screen. thanks
Hi Josh, I also commented on one of your reddit post re tiger lake laptops and external display refresh rate. I have a LG 38wn95c-W (3840 x 1600) and would like to get a laptop that can take advantage of the monitors high refresh rate (144Hz). This has ruled out the lenovo yoga 14s / slim 7 pro (AMD) since it does not have thunderbolt.
I am deciding between the intel version of slim 7 pro or the envy 14, but I am also reading various reports of various tigerlake having issues with high res/refresh rate. Is there acually an output limit with the tiger lake cpu / iris graphics card? I am based in Australia, so will be ordering overseas (US or China) which makes it nearly impossible to return the item if there is any issue. Your help is much appreciated.

Josh, this is a great review but for some of us there is a dealbreaker I think you didn't mention.
The right ctrl key is removed, replaced by the fingerprint reader.
Some of us actually use that key, especially among left handed users.
I would not even be able to comfortably zoom with the scroll wheel using this laptop.
I was about to buy it, thankfully I noticed this problem before hitting order.
You are brutally honest! I appreciate the Ubuntu and Fedora run. Not to be too demanding, if you can cover Arch base and Opensuse it will be very helpful. Maybe if you have the time, just a video on Linux support alone would be great.
You are starting a revolution in reviewing
Wow, this was so well done and explained that even my sister (who btw believed i3 Mac air was better than Ryzen 7 Slim 7), actually understood this wonderful explanation about i5 vs i7!!!
Hi Josh! I have an asus transformer laptop with a 7th gen i7U series chip. I use it for digital art. I wonder if you can recommend any good upgrades for me. Anything with a great digital pen capabilities and as much power to use photoshop efficiently. Most digital illustrators do not cover detailed tech specs, while those that do cover totally ignore the pen capabilities of any touchscreen laptops. If you have digital artist friends you can co-lab with i think it will make a cool video. Thanks for your work man your vids are actually useful and informative.
I clicked on your link but I don’t see an option to choose i5 with 1650ti. Only 1650 Max Q. Did I miss something?
Finally! the review i've been waiting for
The Lack of dark keycaps with high contrast lettering is a deal breaker for me on so many HP laptops. I cannot understand how they have allowed this to be as it is for so many iterations.
Ive bought Elitebooks over Spectre models to avoid this.
Your comments ref i5 vs i7 are really great - thank you!
Can you do a desktop vs laptop video at some point? Would love to get your thoughts and see a comparison of performance based on thermal limitations, as well as degradation of performance as components get older.
Hi Josh- I’m not tech savvy so plz pardon me. I’m buying a spectre 13.3. Are you saying for a savings diff of $230, Id be smarter to buy the i5-1135 w/ 8gb RAM, rather than the i7-1165 w/16gb RAM? I’m a casual user- no editing or gaming. I just want a fast laptop, for surfing and CZcams/Netflix, and love the smaller form factor and 16:9 aspect ratio. I had ordered the i7 because it was the only way to get 16 RAM, & thought the i7 would also be better in general. Will I notice any real difference? Or should I change to the i5 /8gb RAM and save $230? Would you order 512 SSD w or w/o the 32gb Optane ?
Thanks! I Love your channel!
