I’ve been all over Spain and the Basque region is my favorite. I think it’s my favorite region in the world.
Such a lovely place. Gaztelugatxe means "the castle in the rock". In fact there was a castle of the Kingdom of Navarre there.
I spent 2 months in Mundaka, Burmeo, Bakio back in 1984. Wonderful memories, my favourite place in the world. Beautiful country, beautiful people.

I just stumbled into your channel yesterday, and It's amazing... But this Basque Country specially It's just right there! I would indicated for everybody there's a newbie occidental traveler to start in The Basque Country. There's a bit of everything, in such a little space, and it's so undersold that you have the feel of discovering something really new... You can spend a Year overthere and still doesn't know it all, such a history, such a strong culture and a lot of fiestas and pintxos. Mundaka I'ts AMAZING my fav spot along Parque OMA... My parents were Basque farmers they were born in 1934 and 1937 . the videos of the Basque Country are perfects, we are as naturals as the stones where we live for the last 40,000 years. We live in harmony with the natural world and we love our old Euskera (Basque language). We are the last aborigines in Europe.

Spanish civil war was really devastator. My mother told me many times of spanish people fleeing to the other side of the border with Portugal.
Been to San Juan last year! It's deffinitely a place that blows your mind! You just forgot to mention that even before you get to stairs you have to hike down the hill and that takes you a good 45mins :)

Another great video from the vagabrothers! Have you heard of the series "The Time In Between" ("El tiempo entre costuras") - it's a gorgeous Spanish language miniseries about a woman caught up in the tumult of this time period (the Spanish Civil War and WWII).
Thanks for the recommendation! Also, the book "Hotel Flordia" is an excellent biography of a half-dozen foreign & Spanish characters in the war - including Hemingway, Martha Gellhorn, Robert Capa, and more... very insightful.
Also read "For whom the bell tolls" of ernst hemingway, he served in the spanish civil war and falled in love with the country. That novel tool place in spain.

Just went to Gastelugatxe today. The road was redone and the place was crawling with hordes of tourists. And every one of them ringed the bell. I swear to GOD I wanted to burn down a city if I had a dragon...
Now that Game of Thrones has been recorded in the Basque Country San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is full of tourists, impossible to enter and they even broke the bell!
Iban Garcia the bell breakes about 4 times a year. :)

The Spanish civil war literally destroyed the country and it would take generations for the country to slowly recover, a little nationalism can sometimes be a good thing but in Spain it was horrific with the ultimate degradation of Spaniard killing Spaniard, enjoyed the video very much.
