How good would it be if a local craft brewery got on board with a colab to do a Skid Factory “Lemon Squash” IPA or a Sour Mash. Those lemon Squash shirts look cool.

Putting a Barra in would lose it “smicko” status. Turbocharging the 1g would elevate its “smicko” status to a whole new level. Would love to see a 1G-GTE build.

Hi Woody, Al, been watching since the launch of your channel. Loving it, thanks guys. Keep it up!
I'm an in-vehicle sound quality enthusiast and would like to offer some commentary
1:51 as you knock on the roof you can hear the panel resonance. the material you used on the rest of the vehicle is critical to apply here!, as it weighs down the sheet metal and prevents panel resonance from happening. the product you used, insul-layer is supposed to go overtop that being a closed cell foam, futher deadening any transferred waves or waves from inside the cabin. closed cell is usually topped with a layer of open cell foam to break and capture the waves from inside the cabin.
Al mentioned as well-- those beams are what they use from factory to essentially section the roof and make the surface of the roof sheet metal smaller, as it ties to the beam there, and thus the possible surface area for resonance to occur is smaller. i would recommend glueing it back to the sheet metal of the roof.
5:20 it's recommended you leave the product in the sun for a while or heat it up with a heat gun so it becomes more malleable and the adhesive binds better to the surface. contrary to some comments, car builders and many other quality brands are not butyl, but a special compound and adhesive. do not use roofing tar or butyl inside a vehicle!
it is also essential to use the roller wherever you can to ensure the adhesive binds to the panel and countours. pushing it down with your hand is not sufficient.
you also need to degrease the surface you apply this product to and ideally have it as smooth as possible.
6:26 if you place the subwoofer in the back or boot it will work much better. you will achieve a lower response and have to push the subwoofer less for the same output, due to cabin gain and corner loading.
the headunit you have purchased does not have TA unfortunately. this is vital to ensure speakers don't cancel each other out causing dips in the frequency response and for any offset listening position, like the driver seat in a vehicle, to ensure that the stereo imaging is correct.
not to knock it but I would recommend swapping it for a unit that does have DSP with TA so you can use only 4 speakers and the subwoofer on RCA, being fully in control of each speaker to TA them. or even better, purchase an amplifier or standalone DSP with individual channel parametric EQ and TA.
the front speakers can be the coaxials you have installed, but i would recommend having the rear doors only play low frequency and then the subwoofer taking over for the lower range. you will be able to achieve a very decent and stereo correct sounding system that way.
Car builders has an amazing CZcams channel, I would highly recommend everyone to check it out if you're interested in improving the cabin NVH and heat insulation.
If anyone is interested in quality stereo installs I would recommend 5 star car stereo, and for more advanced and real SQ, pssound. Amazingly informative channels.
    Cheers from the Netherlands

Woody, Al, if you get to read this hopefully I put it in a way it might spark your interest more, and maybe others reading it that have a good understanding of electronics. we are using electroacoustic transducers (speakers) to produce a sine wave from 1hz to 20khz in an (for the most part) airtight cabin; the vehicle.
with Time alginment and why it's necessary, what we need to achieve is each transducer playing "in time" or in phase and pressurizing this cabin with sound waves, arriving at the listening position (driver's seat in this case) at the same time for the best stereo recording reproduction. if the transducers do not play in time the produced waves can and will hit each other, cancelling out one another by breaking and bouncing off the waves, causing less output, dips in the frequency response and not pressurizing the cabin. adding more uncontrolled speakers only increases this problem.
we want to be able to control each individual transducer's time of producing the sine wave so they play in phase and there is a summation of all waves combined, which increases output significantly and is the only way to have any stereo 'sound good' in a car.
why we want to Equalize each speaker is being able to control it over the entire frequency range (1hz-20khz) it is going to produce a sine wave. a speaker will rarely play at the same output level over this range by itself, but due inherent problems with the shape, surfaces and size of a vehicle cabin this 'problem' only increases.
we need the speaker to produce the sine wave at an even volume over the entire frequency range in order to playback audio recordings correctly.
a car is an interesting but rather easy environment to play with this. the technology to do all this (DSP and measuring microphone) is affordable nowadays. the simplest of DSP found on many headunits allows you to TA which is required, as well as allow you to equalize the the total output of all speakers.
I'd suggest to anyone that's interested in car audio and likes listening to music to have a go at this. it will make a world of a difference doing this right.
      have fun, cheers

Heaps of tips here man cheers! As I mentioned I’m not an audio guy but I can appreciate a nice stereo, compared to what it was standard it is A LOT better! The Sub may get moved to the boot but I have plans to mount other suspension related components here 🤔 maybe one day we’ll do an all out stereo install and get someone to help us out who knows what they’re doing!! Car stereo systems seem to have died compared to 10 years ago, people
Used to go spending 10G on an install!

@@theskidfactory No worries, hope it helps.
I'll bet it sounds way better than what used to be! plus the benefit of bluetooth and connecting your phone with carplay or android auto, not getting fined. and shaking your passenger's bottom with the sub 😆
Very nice! I'm curious to see what suspension and further mods you will be doing and posting here.
Car stereo systems as we knew them during sexspec days is pretty dead, for better or worse. Many of them were a hot mess of throwing as much speakers; cone area and wattage to hopefully produce some output. Lots of them looked fantastic though!
Most of what's left from my experience is bassheads with SPL systems, very popular in the US (see exocontralto, jacobviral, steve meade, or wacko 'soundman car audio' on CZcams). some Sound Quality guys like myself and consumers looking to improve ease of use in often older vehicles and hopefully make it sound a bit better over what used to be.
Since the turn of the millenium most car manufacturers' engineers know what type speaker to apply where with the correct thiele smal parameters. Nearly all modern cars but also premium and luxury vehicles from the early 00's onwards usually have a DSP with baked preset(s) or with an all-pass filter from factory, fixing these time issues and an overall EQ to make it sound good.
replacing this with any audio parts without knowledge and tuning capability is guaranteed to sound less good, even if you spend 10G on gear. this discouraged the regular consumer to purchase aftermarket products because they rarely sound better over OEM systems, unless applied, installed and tuned correctly.

And also about how one should approach building a reliable experience out of such an old design. I bet it would be super interesting :)

Here's a tip for you; Your speakers will work noticeably better if you put sound deadening on the inner door skin too and close in all those holes before you install the door cards. I used acrylic with sound deadening stuck to it and screwed that over all the holes and my speakers work heaps better for it.

Let's see what you can get out of the 1G, I also have a 1G car and I'd love to see what Al could come up with as he doesn't seem to be afraid of unusual platforms. You can run pretty high boost on the stock GZE internals because it's near 8:1 compression, and even the NA non-vvti 1GFE will see 350hp under boost pretty happily. You can also use mostly OEM parts for upgrades, such as 7M-GTE valvesprings and retainers, 1jz injectors, and probably also JZ Crown intercooler.. An IS200 6 speed is also bolt on and happy to about 350hp at the crank!

Woody, nothing wrong with using aluminum duct tape (or “speed tape” as it’s called in aeronautic circles). It’s what’s used to hold lexan RC bodies together after an off. It adds weight but it does work. You could also use JB Weld and some drywall mesh tape on the backside to hold broken interior trim parts together.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you may need to change the frame rate of your cameras to suit the lighting. It looks like a lot of this shoot was done under fluorescent lights, which runs at 50Hz ('Straya mate). If so, you'd need to change the frame rate on your cameras to match that (25/50/100) etc. You won't get the "pulsing" effect (if that's a thing) I see in this vid.

FWIW, you don't need to use quite so much of that mass-loaded vinyl. Just enough to stop the resonance. If you have a big panel, you can almost always get away with a patch in the centre about half as big as you might think - it dampens the panel from vibrating, and as a bonus you don't have to add near as much weight. (Think about how you can stop a guitar string from vibrating just by sticking a finger on it, you don't have to lay your arm across the entire string.)

My 171 blew my mind when I got into it. Less road and wind noise then our Tesla 3. I'm a big Audio buff though so still went ham with acoustic deadener and now at 1/4 volume I can't hear the outside world at all

The TAFE I went to up north only used SCA multimeters (the others kept getting pinched), they seem to just be a rebranded uni-t, just half the price.

stereo stuff is my jam. i'd have, and have done, just run all new wire for the stereo equipment. if you did it, at least you know it's there, even if something isn't working it's not due to missing or broken 40 year old wires...

would love to see the 1G get built up a bit!
If not - keep it toyota and maybe build up a 3RZ? heaps of big power potential in them.

Yep, and with Audio, you don't need to 100%cover everything with the sound matting maybe 80% of the large panels make a huge improvement.

Turboing the 1ggze would be awesome to see as not a lot of poeple know about them and they have decent potential. gze is the best of the 1g series as it has oil squirters factory and it would be mint with a freshen up and some modern tech.
