Another singer from an older generation, Julie Andrews, who was known for her beautiful voice, had surgery in 1997 to have a cyst removed from her vocal chords and lost her singing voice permanently as a result of the surgery! I can't imagine what it was like for her. I've read it was devastating for her and made her extremely depressed.
Yeah musical theater is murder on the voice, the constant high notes and constant shows and rehearsals.
If they want to, singers change style to invent something new.
Marianne Faithfull shows how.
@@crhu319 Bonnie Tyler went through something similar if I recall correctly. Ended up recording a couple of the most iconic â80s pop songs with her new voice.
@@grahamstrouse1165 yeah, Bonnie's raspiness, which is kinda her signature sound now, developed after a surgery to take care of some problems in her chords I believe. And yeah, she worked the shit outta that, I mean, I can't imagine Total Eclipse of the Heart without that rasp, or Holding Out For a Hero. I mean, no one else could sing those songs other than her with that voice

If you've listened to Miley Cyrus' recent work, you may have noticed it's actually good.
Her voice is awesome the way it currently is.
Yeah, although her Pop was well produced. This sounds more like her doing her thing.

Miley's voice is so unique now, and her vocal style as well.
I feel like it has always been unique
Her style is anything but unique
@@GbrElfunk just your opinionđââïž
When I heard her sister talking on AHS I thought it was Miley talking
It sounds like it is 1970s-1980s. It isn't super unique
I once heard someone say, âher voice sounds like honey, good weed, and cheap whiskey....I think Iâm in love.â I honestly couldnât put it any better.
I love a raspy voice full of lived pain like Mileyâs or Courtney Loveâs, Stevie Knicks, Brody Dalle, Joan jetâs etc etc
Stevie Knicks had problem too but hers was from extreme cocaine abuse and so was Elton John. Remember he actually had surgery to try and recover his voice, and it changed it, he never was 100% again, he just adapted to what he had left vocally, he did this well but not to like was originally.
.
All men btw.
Indeed. And unlike a lot of other singers Mileyâs age, sheâs not affecting a croaky voice, itâs actually how she sounds now.
@@joaniec6178 exactly. Her voice changed naturally.

Miley now sounds like a 60 year old that has been a heavy smoker whole her life. But to be honest: I like her voice more, especially when she`s singing country. It`s a perfect match for that genre.
Agreed her voice has a lot more character now.
-singing- speaking obviously she sounds now like overmatured Pink.
i've found at last the person that sounds familiar- 'Alex Hepburn - Under'
Alex Hepburn gave me a lot of hope and the song is definitely great but the rest of the album,it I donât know if you took the time to listen to the album , well I did and I absolutely did not understand it. My last story with Miss Hepburn and there.
@@queenofalldamned3365 as for me i'm not keen on such raw voices. it sounds perharps powerfully built but ain't my side
Iâm a speech language pathologist and work on a regular basis with patients who have voice disorders, and you beautifully explained vocal function and Reinkeâs edema! Well done!
Thank you Hannah!
Would you associate her heavy marijuana smoking to the change ?
From what Iâve read there really isnât a cure for Reinkeâs Edema. Iâve had surgery, and she (my physician) said I had an old hemorrhage in one vocal fold, and another about to burst omen the other side. She diagnosed me with suffering from Reinkeâs Edema. I lost my voice for 2 months about 20 years ago, but they never gave me an explanation. Looking back I believe that is when that old hemorrhage occurred. Any way, my local cover band singing days are over-unfortunately.
I agree, excellent explanation and video overall.
@@Krae75 smoking, vocal misuse, and poor vocal hygiene (i.e. not staying hydrated, consuming lots of alcohol, smoking, etc) are often the causes of Reinkeâs edema! Reinkeâs edema is most commonly associated with smoking, so it is highly likely that smoking has brought on this diagnosis for her.
taking in mind all that is said, in all honesty, you can't compare a teenager's voice to a grown-up one, she was a baby in HM, her sound is more mature now and she's definitely the absolute best there is.
The voice matures, and part of the change is caused by that. But her voice sounds unnaturally dark and raspy now.
I was thinking I need to hear her singing the same song to even determine how much it changed.
And even from one night to a next a singer's voice can sound a little different because of the strain being put on the vocal chords.
But simply growing causes a change. It is more apparent in males, but us females have it happen too.
She sounds like a Smoker
Too bad her antics are so disgusting on stage.
She was an adult in 2013. She turned 18 in 2010. Her voice changed an unnatural amount between then and now. My voice may sound a little different than when I was a teenager but it more or less sounds exactly the same as when I was 18-21. Mileyâs voice changing this much is definitely not just agingâŠ
I found it really interesting that in 2007 an episode of Hannah Montana was about her character getting vocal surgery, fast forward to now and she actually got vocal surgery!
I like her aged voice a lot better it suits her way more and is perfect for her personality
She has always said she has a deep speaking voice but I think she was intentionally pitching her voice up a lot as well when she was younger
This
I completely agree. Trying to get that "Disney" sound
There's a reason Broadway performers have a "conservation voice" - _conservation,_ not conversation! They always ensure to speak minimally and very softly when doing 8 shows a week. Even though Miley may not sing 8 shows a week (more like 5 or 6), being careful and avoiding talking where possible is definitely a good idea. Oh, and NEVER dress-rehearse with full voice! Only use full voice during VOCAL rehearsal in a controlled environment with your vocal coach present!
Hope this helps any aspiring performers out there!
... If I only knew... Then I wouldn't have lost mine... I was once a suprano, now I can't even sing a high note and this happened in 4 years...

This is perhaps the most compassionate video I've ever watched about someone's voice changing over time. Such gentle compassion, clear and concise explanation, and encouragement at the end. Wonderful as always. :)
Thank you! I feel so many of these videos are about ripping artists down and I certainly donât want that but do want people to understand the risks. It took me a while to balance that when writing this so I am glad it came across!
Curiously, this is not even super compassionate, it's just that she actually knows what she is talking about, or at least try to investigate. Often cruelty comes from ignorance.
@@jaimeduncan6167 Most cruelty does come from ignorance!
Agree!! Really, really well done video
I was never a fan but the last Album - I'm absolutely in love

Man. If Miley developed this at a young adult age, then I have no idea how Courtney Love can even still speak
Well to be fair Courtney Love wasn't out here charting the charts at age 13 with a duo persona. Going on 3 tours before the age of 15 and not only starring in her own tv series but also doing films. Miley was literally working as two people at once. Some child labor laws were definitely broken there lmfao
Well Courtneys voice just isnt as low or raspy, she screams a lot but her songs have easy verses and she adds rasp as effect.
She speaks with forked tongue.
When I hear Miley talk, she sounds like a heavy chain-smoker lady--like Marge's sister from the Simpsons.
Miley 2013 was unstoppable. She could out sing anyone. She was literally belting f5s and G5âs with ease yet being a mezzo soprano. I also love Mileyâs ability to do rock growls. Sheâs definitely got a one of a kind voice.
Fifth octave notes shouldn't be all that difficult for a female voice. Some extremely talented male voices can hit notes in the fifth octave.
@@Morgan-lm6ns she got a voice surgery, so no
I'm gonna have to listen to her more. Never really have. Im 65.
@@j800r_aswell While in theory thatâs true, Mileyâs always had a lower voice. I just personally found her range impressive. Her vocal range is: C#2-A5-G7
@@j800r_aswell males that sing 5 octave notes tend to have very constricted voices with very poor resonance and are only squeezing to get there. They end up having those high notes by sacrificing vocal healthy, power, depth of tone, low notes and middle notes, and they sacrifice longevity too.
"Maybe your voice won't sound like hers, but it will sound like you and the unique and extraordinary life that you are living" What a lovely and inspiring way to wrap this video up! Thanks for this, Beth!
Thank you for watching!
She had a insanely difficult surgery to recover from her vocal cords healed differently
Sounds like adenoids to me.
The voice also naturally gets deeper as we age also.
Right I was a soprano at the start of high school and by the end of it and still am a second alto
She said it was trauma because of her house burning down. Look at her interview

There's only so much genius to review before you just have to inspire more.
And yet at the same time, the reactions felt more like a vocals focused "What Makes This Song Great" and I really liked them!! Don't quit doing them!! Keep finding those vocal gems or even those we heard a thousand times and didn't think much about but there's that little thing that makes it tick... Love the content here!!
Absolutely!
This was a great break down of why Miley is legit. She wears her heart on her sleeve and her soul in her vocals. This was extremely interesting! Thank you!
It's so important to rest your vocal chords. I love singing, and recently, I sang every day for over a week. My style improved and I hit a note I'd struggled to reach. But I could also feel it in my vocal chords. It wasn't pain exactly, more like mild irritation. And I actually had to stop listening to music for a while, because whenever I listen to music, I feel like I have to sing along, because if I don't, I feel like I'll combust. I feel awful that Miley didn't have days off. She sounds amazing, but at what cost? I hope her voice doesn't get any more serious damage. She said in her interview that she's taking care of it properly now, so I hope it works!
!!!!
Her voice changed almost exactly like Stevie Nicks' did between Landslide and her later work.
They are both contraltos in my opinion
This is cool. I started watching you for vocal reacts, but now you're getting into the SCIENCE of singing? SIGN ME THE F*** UP! Even as a non-singer, I appreciate this.
I definitely like her singing voice better now, but it's unfortunately how it got that way. I like a bit of rasp.
Makes for great blues singers đ
Smoking does have a tendency to damage vocal chords. And straining them while singing.
I think her voice now is fantastic. She can make a full rock ĂĄlbum now.
You have the cutest intro everâșïž

@@teacherjeth0112 I have to agree, wphooorr!
The very fiercest creatures often do!
I personally think she sounds much better now/as time has gone on
Miley has a very classic-rock-country-blues kind of voice, and I've always loved it.
I always figured it was almost a brittney situation where her earlier work wanted her to sound much more poppy and a higher tone and not really dig into that gravely part of her voice, but i think shes always had it
Yes, she's always had a deep voice
7 things is an example
Love this style of in-depth coverage. It's almost like a TED Talk.
Opera singers typically go on for longer than 'pop' or 'rock' singers with no such radical changes. That is because they train properly and are thus able to protect and project their voices in a much more controlled way that is well within their true vocal range.
Their whole lives are about protecting their voice. Its a real sacrifice & kind of depressing.
@@blaisearwyn3405 it's not that depressing lol. Great opera singers of the past not only had big voices, they also had great stamina. Which means their voice could handle much more than normal. Most of today's opera singers have so week teachniques that they have to take much more care.
Agreed
!!!!
I like her singing voice more now. I was surprised by her talking voice though lol
Mileyâs voice changed a lot between the seasons of Hannah Montana too. Like compare the song This Is The Life to Iâll Always Remember You. I doubt the change is fully because of maturity. First her voice sounded more congested, then it sounded raspier, now itâs just fully deep and raspy. I wonder what her voice would sound like if she hadnât smoked at all
She sounds like she has huge adenoids.
I don't think she ever smoke cigarette only mj
@@Squirrel_22 oh she smoked a lot of cigs. It's been documented pretty well.

This channel is not about music anymore... Now, is about passion being shared with those in love for music. I've been off for a year, I bloody regret it. Awesome Scottish Gray eyes girl... Congratulations is by far an unfair word.
Are those specifically Scottish? Mine are a weird pale blue that's more grey-green, not like anyone else in my family, and now I'm wondering what colour my maternal grandmother (a Ross who grew up speaking Gaelic in Cape Breton) had.
The only other person I ever met with the same was a Duncan (transported from Scotland for horse thieving!). I loved her very much but the real bonus was in the apocalypse we would never be short of rides!

The way contemporary music is produced is an additional factor that contributes to people overstraining their voice. Bad technique can be âfixedâ in post production to some extend and so companies have reduced or entirely stopped spending money on training and coaching their talent to actually learn good technique in the first place.
Also a lot of music is so heavily compressed and âloudâ that it gives listeners and especially people interested in singing a completely wrong impression of how singing works.
If you Listen to vocalists today, especially young aspiring singers or talent show candidates, you can actually hear how hard they push their voices and how much strain they put on their vocal cords because many of them never had any sort of professional vocal coaching and they also picked up a lot of really unhealthy and bad habits from listening to music on the radio or on Spotify.
When I started taking professional lessons twenty years ago I had to unlearn a whole lot of very bad habits I picked up from listening to music on TV and radio. music that even at the time was already often overproduced and over compressed and sung by people who also didnât really have great technique to begin with. Things have only gotten worse over the last twenty years and so aspiring vocalists today tend to pick up even worse habits than I did.
Which is why channels like this really matter.
Something i've gathered from a lot of pub singers & amateur bands etc is that they fall for the illusion that louder = better when it's not always true, that's what the microphone is for, it's the sound engineer's job to get the mix right. I've seen loads of inexperienced singers that have no musical ear for how their band sounds as a whole so gradually through the night they start getting louder and louder until it just sounds awful. This goes for any musician standing on a stage. A good musician listens to the whole band, bad musicians only listen to themselves.

This is very interesting & important info to get out there.
"i didn't get recovery days there that was not important for someone that was making so much capital for such a big corporation". As an industry, the music business has an extremely poor track record of ensuring the well-being of its people (just look at how many artist end up dead or wrecked for life). It is e.g. well documented that taking people out of their environment and hauling them on tour around the world is severely stressful for their physical, mental and social health. Then you add in shenigans like Michael Jackson accidentally getting half his head burned off and you have a profession that looks more like a death trap than something people make a living of. I mean, most industries have managed to establish effective safeguards against the specific dangers of that industry except the music (and film) industry where such consideration seem to either not exist or, at best, seem pretty ineffective.
There is College Humor's 'Construction Workers React to "Wrecking Ball"' which is meant humourous but it seems to contain an awful amount of truth each time I hear stories like that from the music industry.
I like the sound of her voice now. I think she's a great artist.
shes always been a mezzo... you can tell even when she was singing higher songs and during her time as a disney star she was still so young and the songs she was singing were very youthful so even though she was always a mezzo, the music shes singing now (country rock) allows her to embrace her mezzo sound a bit more
Nicely done Beth...a professional presentation...you didn't miss a beat or a technicality
