The reason their wedding is so unromantic is they really don’t like anything about each other. So them playing it off like he’s weird for wanting to talk about his experience, that he’s proud of, felt very mean. It’s kind of like if someone had just gotten back from getting married or having a child (something to be proud of) and people were like “shut up about your wife/kid already and focus on me”

Someone else here already talked about it, but I want to agree with and re iterate it, but the worst episode to me, is one where Penny rightfully confronts Howard about his years of, essentially sexual harassment. Howard is super hurt by this and goes into a depressive spiral. They could have actually done something interesting here by making Howard face his treatment of women and grapple with his attitude and behavior towards them. But instead, they write it as if Penny is the one in the wrong, Howard is the poor victim and how she learns to forgive him and admit she was wrong. The whole thing is borderline disgusting, misogynistic and just awful all the way around.

If he looked like any of the gym bros she used to date and said the same things she would have giggled and hopped into bed with them, as evidenced by the amount of times she giggled and hopped into bed with random hot bar guys. But because Howard is not tall and hot it becomes "sexual harassment" as opposed to flirting. He never touched her inappropriately or anything close. He tried pickup lines on her.

He was hitting on her and if he looked like Brad Pitt she would have jumped his bones like she did with Zack or Kurt or that other hot physicist who's name I forgot but had a motorcycle. Or when she went back to Zach or when she was in high school in a flashback and celebrating a negative pregnancy test with that dude on her bed. My point is it wasn't sexual harassment. It was an unattractive dude hitting on a hot chick so she berated him and the show made it seem like he deserved it and she only Apologized because he felt bad.

We finally got Denise towards the end, but she was never a major player in the cast, and she was set up to be Stuart's Happily Ever After, not her own person. I think this episode is a perfect showcase of where the series went wrong as the seasons progressed. At first, the big bang theory was a fully episodic sitcom with the characters not having that much depth and purely focusing on the comedic situations that can arise from an average girl getting in the social circle of four geeks. As they keep introducing new characters and paired the main stars into couples, the show evolved into a more average couples sitcom that wanted to treat its characters like actual people, not comedically exaggerated archetypes.
The problem with that, is that the comedy and writing remained the same, which made jokes like Sheldon's social unawareness or Leonard's simping turn from charming and funny to uncomfortable now that we were viewing the people making them as actual people. You can't write off Sheldon's sexism so easily when the writers want to portray him as an actual human and not an exaggerated carricature.

It started to Jump the Shark a little bit when Bernadette and Amy were introduced. The geek guys turned out to be really successful, ladies men. Even Raj had multiple girlfriends/hookups during the whole series. The initial premise was invalidated. By the way, Amy and Bernadette (whilst well acted) were horrible characters. Bernadette was a selfish control freak, and Amy was a horrible vivisectionalist. It's a tribute to the actors/actresses and writing that we could still feel sympathy for all the characters to a certain extent, when really, the only sympathetic character was Leonard (the straight man for Sheldon).

The worst episode for me was when Penny and Leonard went to the movies as friends just one on one. It was a hard watch, it was uncomfortable and nothing got resolved in the end so it was also dissatisfying. It also really goes to show how correct that one commenter is about the unhealthy dynamic between those 2 and how they failed at love and just settled to be honest. At least, that’s how the writers made it feel in the end. Raj ending up alone, despite lowkey being a ladies man and being selectively mute around women and the storyline that could have been. Also, I think Amy, Penny and Bernadette’s dynamic could have been adorable, but they ruined it by making Amy the “new and improved” female version of Howard. Although she ended up being better at reading a room than Sheldon, she said weird things far too often. TBBT had all the potential and it fell so flat. They should have planned out 4-5 seasons and really flushed out the relationships with the characters instead of whatever the hell the last 4 seasons were and wasting the first 5 seasons on “will they, won’t they” for everyone. Also, I know this is controversial, but making 2 of the characters gay would have been extremely interesting and wouldn’t have even been very left field. The way Amy spoke to her friends, the way Leonard understood Sheldon in a way no one could up until Sheldon met Amy, or the dynamic between Howard and Raj…. I mean, the material for it was just there.

That is literally the biggest issue for me about the show. All the moments especially when Howard threw a fit because Sheldon, who he should know cannot lie, admitted that the former hacked the Mars rover. They act like they were "friends" but all Howard ever did from episode 1 was insult Sheldon and make fun of him for not being as socially adept as the rest were. Leonard just deals with it because at most times, he even admits that Sheldon 'can' be a good person, but he should also know that Sheldon isn't as socially adept as everyone. There we have two people who never thought about getting married or having romantic relationships EVER, yet they are completely and genuinely in love in every single way. The wedding vows are truly emotional and beautiful because they feel perfectly in line with the characters : they never asked for love nor wanted it, yet they found it and nothing else matters. I believe an argument can be made that the dynamic would work…if these characters were teenagers. It’s not uncommon for teenage friend groups to have a friend or two that tends to build themselves up by tearing other members of the friend group down. I had a friend like that, and I saw others in different groups. These people are harder to escape in a teenage click bec of the tight, even ridge, scope of life we experience at teens. Our daily lives are more or less dictated to us, in school attendance, breaks, holiday activities, and even our free time. (A teen can not simply pack up the car and head to Vegas for a couple nights), so we accept these people because, though we dont yet know it, life is typically not overly difficult in our teen years when compared to the impending adulthood. But as an adult, in the freedom of social purgative and typical adulthood struggles, I’ve and I’m sure many others, have shrugged off that friend because we do not need to be in proximity to them anymore and know that the rigors of adulthood don’t need the additional struggle of mockery.
So in summary, it can work. But not for esteemed academics in their late 20s- late 30s.

This is actually a great example why the jokes in the show so often fall flat for me. Because they're all under the premise of those characters being "geeky" or "smart" but it is all so blatantly fake. It reminds me of the joke where someone says "guess who did X?" and Sheldon replies "Mohammad Lee" because he couldn't possibly guess the answer so he just took the most frequent first name and surname of the world and combined them. Which I guess is funny enough but that is so blatantly unscientific thinking - especially someone like Sheldon should be very aware that that reasoning is nonsense because while these may be the most frequently used names individually, their combined use would statistically be comically small and it would make much more sense to use the most frequently appearing combination of names (maybe even limited to the us instead of the world).
They want to sell us that someone like Sheldon who is stooped up to his hair line in the world of academia and supposed to be super smart and precise and all that, would argue such a nonsensical point and there are dozens of examples like this. Season 6 was the last well written season of Leonard and Penny's relationship. It was understandable for Penny to reject his proposals, but after the agreement that she proposes when she's ready, Leonard rejecting her proposals were unnecessary. Them getting engaged sucked. More importantly the later seasons the writers just milked their relationship for dysfunctionality for the humor, which sucked.

One thing that really bothers me with this wedding episode is rather than focusing on the moment when Leonard and Penny are pronounced husband and wife we instead watch Amy and Sheldon fight with Amy storming off and Leonard and Penny saying they are officially married. Basically they got married off screen and their wedding was overshadowed by Sheldon and Amy's drama. I feel both Sheldon and Amy's wedding and Howard and Bernadette's wedding were given more respect than both Leonard and Penny's weddings because there was no drama and jokes involved, plus they got married during season finales to cap off the seasons on big events while Leonard and Penny got married in season premieres.

I was always a bigger fan of Sheldon and Amy's relationship and never bought Leonard and Penny as a couple, but even I felt bad for fans of the couple about how terrible L&P's wedding was. I feel like most of Leonard and Penny's big moments were bad: when Penny tells Leonard she loves him for the first time, it's a sweet moment, but it's in a totally forgettable and not well-written episode. When Penny and Leonard get engaged, it's only after she decides to quit acting, and it feels like she's settling for the next best thing by finally agreeing to marry Leonard. Even their re-do wedding isn't great. There have definitely been couples in other shows/movies who weren't written very well but the acting makes up for it, and I've never felt that way with Leonard & Penny: their actors have no chemistry to salvage the bad writing of their relationship. I always felt the best writing on this show (in terms of romantic plots) was saved for Sheldon and Amy's relationship.

Whatever your feelings towards these two as a couple is - I think we can all agree that this idea was really bottom of the barrel.
The idea of Leonard cheating on Penny was a completely WTF moment for me along with them impulsively deciding to go get married in Vegas. Is the idea of that some sort of “undo the damage/memory of Penny pulling that drunken wedding with Zack” or some shit?
The overall vibe of the episode is just this cocktail of giddy optimism with so much uncomfortable tension…
It’s sad and I get that a big part of their relationship is both of their insecurities when it comes to being together and feeling like they are good enough for each other - Penny emotionally and intelligence-wise + Leonard emotionally/psychologically and aesthetically - but honestly I wished they had pulled over at some hotel/motel, talked it all as painful as it would have been, gotten on the same page (maybe decide to see a counselor too), and drive back to Pasadena first thing in the morning.

While this two-parter was lacking in the jokes, the earlier episode felt way more depressing since the breakup was manipulated by Wheaton to win a bowling tournament. Sheldon and Amy receive a Nobel Prize after Leonard makes him feel shitty about being excited to have gotten a huge recognition for his and Amy's work. It's mainly because Penny was pregnant and didn't want to spoil the mood, and Sheldon was accused of being unsympathetic because, as Leonard should know, social concepts like that fly over Sheldon's head. He generally makes him feel like crap because Sheldon wasn't expressing out of shock happiness that Penny was pregnant. Literally the day before Sheldon and Amy were going to receive the Nobel Prize. I haven't watched The Big Bang Theory in years, but I think it's one of the rare instances of the cynicism of Two and a Half Men rubbing off on to the show. Ever since Charlie Sheen's departure and Angus T. Jones getting older and more critical of the show, it took on a darker sense of humor, with Alan going from being a bit of a nerdy doormat but a great dad that was simply handed a bad hand in life to being a selfish leech that takes advantage of the people around him and it feels like they don't even like him. The Big Bang Theory is generally a more light-hearted show outside of a few outdated episodes, but this is one of the rare times it was just as cynical as Two and a Half Men without any sense of comedy.

Worst episode for me is probably The Romance Recalibration from season 10. I found Penny so unlikeable in this episode. She had the nerve to tell Leonard he is taking her for granted and that Leonard hasn't been trying anymore since they got married, when it's actually the other way around, and then the writers have Leonard go and apologize to her later on for saying he has been making effort more than her since day one rather than having him stand his ground. Granted Leonard isn't perfect with his relationship with Penny either but I feel he takes responsibility for his actions and learns his lesson while Penny doesn't.

It’s interesting I didn’t realise this show was so critiqued, I’ve been rewatching a bit and much is very jarring now, and I can see it’s totally a show about nerds not written by nerds, but I’d argue it still has heart and the writers and audience aren’t consistently laughing AT the characters without respect. But a lot deserved better and should’ve been better: penny should not have had to apologise for standing up to Howard, there’s a scene where Leonard goes to sell all his beloved ‘nerd’ stuff for penny which Penny shouldn’t have encouraged, RAJ deserved better. I love sheldon and amy but in the real world I think it would’ve been great is sheldon was asexual/aromantic. Someone should’ve been gay !! It’s weirdly traditional, with them all ending up very traditionally married and with kids. There’s a lot of outdated misogyny, fat jokes, etc that just so painfully show the show is written by men. But I won’t deny there’s a reason why it’s been so successful, but yes there’s a LOT of poor attitudes expressed in it and it would’ve benefitted from a real ‘nerd’ or two in the writing room so some of the jokes could have had layers

I dont think I ever felt like rooting for any of the couples on the show. Raj had dysfunctional relationships throughout and ended up alone. Penny and Leonard had nothing going for them and they fought and broke up so many times that I didnt care about them at all after the first few seasons Howard was a creepy guy who somehow ended up getting married and having kids (and the first one to do so). Lastly, Amy went from being a girl version of Sheldon to being a normal nerdy girl almost immediately while Sheldon constantly did things that made you wonder if he had had any character growth at all. He even behaves selfishly when they all go to Switzerland at the end. Also, its highly unlikely that a character like Sheldon would have so many friends and a wife with people bending over backwards hundred percent of the time to accomodate him. They give him the perfect life and no one has that let alone someone as stubborn and selfish as him.
