I have just been reading a comment on here by a Julie Beutler on this lesson that reminded me how l used to wonder how is it my faith is so limited that l cannot see His hand like the Bro of Jared, even just a finger tip will do l often say. Then suddenly l too experienced what can only be described a 'shift" and as though a mist lifted l felt so clearly and firmly not just his hand, but his arms, his chest and see how he lifts, cradles and carries me over those rough and thorny patches in my life. Oh Lord my God, how great thou art!

I love this lesson. It gave me a different perspective on this part of the story of the Brother of Jared.
One of the things that I took away from it is that when we are building our lives (the ships), the Lord gives us instructions. We have a blueprint. When we get to parts that we don't understand, he will guide us. He is the literal giver of life (the holes for air). We like to think that we are steering, but He is truly in control. This requires great faith and humility. Finally, we *could* cross the deep sea of life doing the things he has instructed us--the letter of the law. However, we cannot truly see and have joy until we ask the Lord to touch us and our life. Not only does he give us life, but He is the source of light in our lives--light that dispels fear and brings joy and wisdom to us on our journey.
I want to kneel in prayer every day and ask the Lord to stretch forth his hand and touch my life. Touch my heart. Give me light so that I do not travel this journey in darkness. The brother of Jared had great faith. His request was so specific. Touch these rocks. This implies that he understood his nature in relation to God. He must have known that we are created in God's image because he knew God had a physical hand that could reach out and touch the stones. His gospel is build upon a rock. And through that rock we receive light in our lives.
This is truly one of my favorite stories in the Book of Mormon that gives me comfort in the trials of life. I just imaging that I'm on that ship with the Jaredites being tossed in the sea, not knowing where we are headed, but knowing that I am in the Lord's hands.

Loved how you pointed out the 3 ways the Lord answered his prayers-agency, don’t worry, and step by step instructions. I can’t help but think that when we are doing any of these three things, that we are “letting God prevail!” Some of them can be very difficult at times! In my experiences the one that says “don’t worry” because God is going to take care of it, has been the hardest one to allow at times, because we see the problem or pains we are facing head on in the moments we are in them, and even though God says “don’t worry” we have no idea at all what he is going to do and how it will all work out when all we can see in those moments is chaos or pain or fear! But earlier this year when I read an article in the church news about Kelly Laing who spent months at a time on a submarine said this about the brother of Jared: The lord answered “what will ye that I should do that ye may have light in your vessels?” The lord put it back on the brother of Jared!! Laing said. The lord wants us to do that. He’s going to ask us “what would you have me do so you can have light in your life and in your circumstances?” After reading that I immediately remembered the experience that I had last year on Thanksgiving morning, when I was praying with gratitude for everything that I was grateful for. Suddenly in that prayer, something shifted and one thing after another after another started shooting through my mind! I couldn’t pray quick enough to really go in depth with the Lord how grateful I was for each thing, because each thing I felt so much gratitude for, but before I could express it, more and more things just kept flowing through my heart and mind! I was sobbing with so much gratitude! I finally after 45 minutes or so, had to get up and get some tissue to blow my nose and as I layed back down, I realized wow!! Look at how much you have blessed me with!! Basically Everything that I have been praying for throughout my life, has been given to me!! Not to say that it was easy, or happened in the way I would have hoped. I had to take a lot of hard steps! Some that were harder than I hoped for, and some that helped me find the next step i needed to take! But you gave it all to me!! But as I recognized how much He had done for me, I felt this shift of confidence come over me, where I felt like I don’t even have to have faith or ask anymore and wonder! I NOW KNOW that You will bless me with everything I truly desire and want! That somehow, someway, someday You will make it work out! I know that you will give it to me!! I literally felt that I didn’t even have to ask Him anymore for the things I was still hoping for! I knew that He was going to bless me with it!! But there was this shift of recognizing that we really don’t always have to ask the lord for things, that instead all He expects or wants us to do is to just tell Him what we want Him to do, and He will do it!! I have been recognizing lately also that this is very similar to how Christ would pray to Him as well. After blowing my nose, I knew that there were deep desires and things that I was truly hoping for, and wanted to ask for, but since I was only praying with gratitude, and not asking for anything, all the things that I was deeply desiring in my heart I started praying for with gratitude! And instead of asking for this blessing, that I so wanted, instead I was able to say, I know that you will bless me with this desire and this desire and this desire and my prayer went on and on again just sobbing all over because I KNEW!! There was no doubt in my mind!! I knew that the lord was going to give me EVERYTHING that I wanted!! I knew that everything that my heart was truly desiring at that time, was with no doubt what the Lord would want as well! I honestly felt like I no longer had to ask!! Just like the brother of Jared, all I had to do was to tell him what I/MYSELF wanted Him to do , and I knew in those moments of prayer that everything I was asking Him (or actually thanking/trusting/telling Him) for, that He would give to me!! I knew it!! He had helped me realize how much He had already given me, and I knew that He would not stop now!! But instead of asking him, I just had to tell Him what I wanted, and thank him again that I knew He would bless me with it! I wasn’t asking for anything anymore! I had confidence and I knew as confidently as I knew my name and that it was thanksgiving day, I knew that He would bless me with all of those desires that I had in my heart!! Just like the brother of Jared saw the lords hand. Why did he? Because he knew how much the lord had guided and helped him from past experiences, that the lord would touch the rocks! And he literally could see his hand!! Now I didn’t literally see the lords hand, but yet I have “seen” his hand play over and over in my life, so much, that I experienced this shift of no longer feeling like the Lord would not grant unto me the righteous desires of my heart. All I needed to do was tell Him what I want! He is so merciful! So many times miracles have come that now I know the lord is going to bless me! It’s almost like seeing his finger right before me every day!!

I had the same thoughts. First, they were told to gather up seeds and all animals, male and female. I see the ships kind of like flying saucer shaped with a whole in the top and bottom. Can you imagine elephants or giraffes or....flopping around? Why did they need seeds and animals. The flood has already happened. The earth has split. So, does that mean the new world didn't have plants and animals? what am I missing?

@@kerrysiggard9285 - They were on the barges for almost a year and had to have food for that entire time for both themselves and the animals. I don't think they were carrying animals to populate the promised land, but to feed themselves on the journey across the ocean. They probably needed the animals to reproduce (hence the need for male and female) on the barges to have enough food; think about how much food a family consumes in a year. I doubt they were large animals like elephants and giraffes, more like sheep and goats... Just my understanding, I could be wrong and missing something.

In 2006 my life came to a FULL stop of how my life was and I had to leap onto my NEW life with no safety net. Then came General Conference October 2006 and as I Iistened and read the talks I got the clear impression that Heavenly Father said: little daughter of mine, this is your life now. Do your best going ahead. I HAVE YOUR BACK from now on. So in reallity he said, I take of this part, so you take care of yours. And he has - I had to meet certain people and my life is VERY different from what it was - but it's good in it's own way. Now I have a calling - I know there is more to it, but I see things that will be of benefit to the brothers and sisters around me, so I prepare things to be helpfull to them. What my calling at the end of this period will be I do NOT know. But I prepare the things I feel will be of benefit to others and then He will show me the rest as time goes by.

The brother of Jared was closer to God and probably a prophet because God would speak to him. I don't think that was any different than today. Everyone knows we have a Prophet today and there has been many times in my life I wished I could go to the prophet and ask him to talk to God concerning me and my life. How awesome it would be if we could get that close to Heavenly Father and be told as little children what we should do or be. Loving this lesson! Thank you!😀❤

Wow! I have no other words. I just found this video channel, after watching our stake conference last week, via CZcams Channel. I'm not on any kind of social media, nor do I have the time to sit and watch videos on my laptop, after working on it most days. I'm rather archaic, you either call, text or stop by if you want to talk to me. My kids just recently got me an iPhone so they can FaceTime me (which I love! (FaceTime) Not so much the phone which is smarter than me). I've been a member all my life and never in all my years have I had teachers like y'all. I have learned so much in these last 3 videos I've watched, than in my whole life. You make the words come alive, so I can understand them better! My husband is not a member, and I'm the only active member in my extended family, so it's hard to study on my own. My Sunday's are reading the scriptures and lessons and watching the new 'Come Follow Up' on the BYU Channel and Web Indexing. My Monday FHE has been to do Web Indexing. I now have made your lesson videos my first to watch, (with great anticipation, I will add). I see you talking and looking at me (actually the camera) and you draw me in. Your mannerism and enthusiasm in your teaching is so spellbinding, it reaches down into my soul and fells my spirit that my cup runneth over. Please Don't Stop! May this 'Calling' of yours be long, that I may continue to learn and grow my testimony stronger, as you teach ALL the scriptures in the years to come. God Bless you both for your time and service!

About step-by-step instructions and agency, I learned a valuable lesson several years ago. I was in a difficult situation. I was pleading for help. I wasn't getting any answers. I visited my daughter who lived in a different state. I went to Relief Society. The teacher said: "If you are not getting answers to your prayers, change your prayer." I felt like I was hit with a sledge hammer. I went home and I prayed about the situation. I asked Heavenly Father what I should do to get out of the situation. Before the words were completely out of my mouth, I was given exactly what I should do. I could have chosen to ignore the council of the Lord. I chose to follow His advice. I did exactly what I was told to do, which was to quit my job. I did and I was surprised at how quickly the Lord then answered my prayers. I love your lessons every week. They make me think and ponder. I have gained great insights from the two of you! Love to you!

... and isn't it wonderful that the record of the brother of Jared didn't end in Ether 2:14, were the Lord chastened him "because he remembered not to call upon the name of the Lord"? He repents and prays again and is forgiven and only then do we have this miraculous event that happens regarding the stones and seeing not only the finger of the Lord, but the Lord Himself. Such a wonderful lesson of grace and love, that when we repent the Lord is always willing to forgive and to strengthen us. And greater miracles will always follow.

The fruit of the tree of life was white, as the stone is white.

It was as if you knew what I have been going through and described it perfectly without knowing me or any of the details of my life. And yet I still don't know how God wants me to exercise my agency. No on earth seems to have the answers I'm looking for. God has been silent. I trust in Him. I know he loves me. I know He knows the answers. I just don't know how to find the answers. Every path I take, no matter how promising it looked at one point, has led to a dead end. And I've taken every path I know of.

It's so hard when that happens. I often think of Joseph of Egypt and wonder if he ever felt overwhelmed, forgotten, and frustrated. He did nothing wrong, but he was imprisoned for YEARS after he was falsely accused. He didn't know that the Lord wasn't only going to save HIM, but that he was going to use him to save an entire nation and his family--the rest of the tribes of Israel. Joseph is a type and a shadow of Christ, but he is also an example to me. I am not yet as Joseph of Egypt. I am not yet as Job. ......My kids and I made a list of all the people we could think of in the scriptures who had to stand alone. (Spoiler alert--most of the prophets. We ran out of time before we ran out of names.) .... Maybe when the way is hedged up (like the bars in Joseph's prison), and when I feel all alone, maybe the Lord is preparing me and refining me and holding me in His hand until the way that he wants me to go is prepared.

Is it possible that the brother of Jared was the high priest and like Nephi asking his father to pray, even after he has started recurving his revelations, recognized this authority? Kind of like us in our day, recognizing our fathers, bishops, stake president and general authorities in that order?

I love the three categories of every question or request made to the Lord and how you compared it with a baby. That is so very true, sometimes we act like babies crying for something and we want it now, we forget that we are not babies anymore. Other thing I loved is that God knows where we are and how capable we are to become what HE wants us to become, and He stretches us to the next level when we are ready, because He knows all the things, He knows what He is doing He is aware of us all individually.

Regarding the commentary in minute 43, about God wanting us to use our free agency and to "work it out in our minds": I absolutely agree. I also know from experience that sometimes I only think God isn't responding when in fact, in hindsight, I see that He was actually "talking" to me but I didn't recognize it. I often don't recognize when I am being spoken to either because I'm too wrapped up in my panic to be able to see or hear anything else, or because I didn't like the answer and therefore believe it was divine inspiration. For me, what I have found to be the case more often than not is that God does talk to me far more often than I realize in the moment. But I'm working on it!

Thank you T&T Brothers for tremendous insights on this Scripture Block Ether 1-5. Having grown up in Utah we learned how Brigham Young called the State of Utah Desert and the significance of the Honey Bee. "When Brigham Young and the Latter-day Saints arrived in Salt Lake Valley in July of 1847, Brigham Young chose the name “Deseret” for their new home, and the beehive as its emblem, symbolizing the kind of cooperative work that would be required to make the desert bloom." Now living here in the Arizona desert, the honey bee is VITAL to our crop growth and so that the desert blossoms as the rose !!
Taylor, I loved your amazing explanation of the Egyptian word "Deshret or Desert and the significance of the symbol on the Pharaoh's crown with the squiggly symbol. It NOW has come full circle for me. My wife and I had the opportunity of visiting Egypt and the Cairo area marveling at photos and statuary of the Pharoh's crown. I wondered back then what the significance of the squiggly tail on his crown meant? NOW I KNOW THE REST OF THE STORY to quote Paul Harvey. Thank you my friend, fascinating !!

About Jared and the brother of Jared, is a perfect example how things were organized in that time of the OT and how the Lord has meant it to be then. One is for leading and make sure a family, is safe and dealing with the organizing material things, assisted by an spiritual leader. They say the brother of Jared meaning one in faith and believes how things need to be done and organized in there familie/tribe. They can be brothers also by blood, but for sure by faith and believe, they work together. Just as king David and the profet Nathan, they had a very intimate relation to make sure there family, their people are safe and guided with spiritual aproval and guidens from heavens. Remember how devastated, profet Nathan was when finding out that David had not come to him for spiritual advise when taking the wife away from his armies general. Profet Nathan told him how all would have worked out if he just would have counseld him to ask the Lord. This a a very comon situation in the OT. The sad thing is that King David and Profet Nathan were also brothers in faith and worked togethe very well. Until David slowly started to focus away from the Lord by not counseling profet Nathan but following his own will, very sad the consequences not only for King David but more so fore the tribe.
There are many more examples of this King/familie heads, working together with the spiritual leader, we can see this happening with Mozes not being able to counsel everyone, will only be counseld for special spiritual advise, others will start taking over the other decisions. This is already to long sorry for that but there are many more examples in the OT of the tribe leaders and the spiritual leaders working together as being appointed to each other. up to Jezus, the trouble is that in the time of Jezus the spiritual advisors were devided and were no longer asking the Lord but trusting in flesh, meaning that one has to know the law, the scriptures so well that one could advise from the scriptures, the problem was that they started to use the scriptures to sustain their own will and wealth and comfort and not the will of the Lord. This made them afraid, paranoia and deaf for the Lords guidens. We can see with Jared and the brother of Jared a couple that understood this special relationship and trusted each other and both were clearly worthy of guidens. This is how they ended up safe in this great and desirable land with their tribe. If you have read until this... hope it was worth it to you🌟

You gave away the store...but so carefully and appropriately. The mount, the work preparing the holy vessels of the Lord as symbolized by the stones. Reaching the point where, through covenant keeping, they are clothed upon with light from the finger of the Lord. The medieval sealing rings... Thank you. Studying the sacred ogdoad, circle of 8 ties in to the eight barges. Each have the contrite head and the broken heart (male/female aspects) making 16 stones. In the ships of Zion they head to the promised land, arriving in one cycle for the renewal... The New Year Right celebrating a new first day. There, they re-establish their King and are gathered to Christ, the great high priest who is the center of all, making the sacred ennead of 9. You filled in some holes for me today. I can't help but to see some parallel between the brother of Jared and Joseph Smith. Jared went to his brother to ask God about what He would have them do. Likewise, many of the first saints went to Joseph Smith to ask God what He would have them do - some requests we find in the Doctrine and Covenants.
