Tyler and Taylor, your lessons have made a profound influence on my life. My husband has a unique story in that he joined the Church as a young Marine, served a mission, married and was a Bishop for a time, but a bitter, ugly divorce and all the hypocrisy he experienced and a flailing testimony not centered totally in Christ caused him to take his name off the records of the church. Our 2nd marriage and then later our temple sealing has been a "restoration in progress". It has been line upon line. Perhaps from too much exposure to anti-gospel literature during his time away, the last part of his testimony to be restored has been of The Book of Mormon. We have loved your teaching and the Spirit has testified to us of it's truths like never before. It feels so very relevant to be studying it during this point of the world's history and our personal journey where so many parallels and applications can be made. I am amazed at my husband's mighty change of heart and want to thank all at Book of Mormon Central for helping in this conversion process. I have felt my own spiritual growth soar too from this year of intense study. The promises are true! I can testify of them!

I had to comment when you spoke about your students returning from missions, feeling like failures.. One day, something pretty spectacular was happening, and I sat on the lawn and tracked down a missionary who had baptized me 25 years prior. I was already inactive before he returned home.. He would've felt like a failure.. This particular day, I felt prompted to message him and let him know that his mission was a total success. You see, I was sitting on the temple lawns, waiting for my daughter, who was being sealed with her family for time and eternity.. No mission is ever a failure :)

i love your lessons , while raising 10 children time would not permit me to delve into the Book of Mormon as much as i wanted to. Now that i am in my senior years and a widow it consumes much of my days and it is a feast most delicious to me . I am so thankful for your insights and testimonies.

Many years ago, as a young 12 year old Deacon, I was invited to speak in our Stake General Priesthood meeting. I was terrified! What could I say to all these experienced men!? I'll never forget that I chose to speak on Alma returning "speedily" to Ammonihah and the powerful messages that followed from him and Amulek. In a like manner, A & A - in the past, we now have T & T - in the present, reminding us yet again of the compelling truths valid millennia ago and equally vital today. Thank you again!

Wow. I had my eyes opened. I have been an active member all of my life. I always thought "prosper in the land" meant financial blessings. We have had years of struggling finances. I wondered why. We paid our tithes and offerings consistently, and kept the commandments. I love that Taylor explained what prosper in the land really meant! Thanks so much.
Yeah, I had thought the same thing for years. And so when I discovered that prosperity primarily meant "Having God's presence with you" my entire perspective changed!

Where there is increased opposition there is increased opportunity to grow up and become more like God. If we can be faithful in all things and stick with God we will overcome and become and our faith will be as soled as a rock . Truly the essence or purposes of life is growth and to become and to overcome if we will not falter in our love and comemtment to who we are as real children of real Heavenly parents. Thank you again, I'm getting so much from your lessons; each week answers questions sometimes that I didn't even know I had. Years ago I was prompted to move into a remote area where the church was, well, it was apostate if I want to be honest. I know the Lord inspired me to move there and this was confirmed by a vision that I had in the Temple just prior to moving. Over the 17 years in that area I helped in the conversion of 5 families who, after their baptisms, were driven out by the intense pressure by the existing members. It was heartbreaking in many ways. One was not permitted to quote scriptures, testimonies were of wealth etc., and when I finally left that area and moved back to my old home I felt that I had failed. I truly felt that I needed to repent and found it hard reading the Book of Mormon for every verse reminded me of that failure. I've read these scriptures dozens of times if not more but today during your lesson, I read them in a new way. Sure, I've totally grasped the fact we all have our own agencies etc., this was never a conscious barrier for me, but what I realised today is that no matter how much one fasts and prays, and loves the people, even members, just because they don't have a change of heart does not mean that I have failed. I actually feel at peace and even though my head was saying that I didn't fail, my heart was still filled with sadness - I don't feel that way now. I also realised that many people see the bigger picture, proclaim membership in the fold but do nothing about it from then on.... thank you again.

Whenever I return from an international trip, I look forward to one thing. As I go through customs, the US Customs agent reviews my documents, hands them back to me and says, "Welcome home." I like it so much that if an agent doesn't say it, I tell him, "You're supposed to welcome me home, that's my favorite part." They usually grin and welcome me home.

These classes have blessed me SO much being a single female without a Priesthood holder in the home. It truly means a lot to have this teaching as well because working prevents me from attending classes when they are offered during non-pandemic times as my ward offers them at 10am during a work day. These offerings are so very needed and appreciated. It has led me to look into other offerings thru BYU online which offers many wonderful free classes...I will continue to attend your classes and I am recommending them to others as well. I think it was wisdom in God that this particular angel revisited Alma and reminded him of his first visit. Alma was like unto the people of Ammonihah then, yet his own Father had fasted and prayed for his welfare like Alma did for these people. Alma's Father nor God had given up on him and this would have given Alma extra faith and courage to not "give up" on the people of Ammonihah and go back.

Love the clear and beautiful ways we are presented to the first (temporal) and second (spritual) death in these chapters.
A reflection I like to make at sacrement. Of the many symbolisms of sacrament, I like to think of the bread as the ressurrected body of Christ; as we remember Him, and take part in Him (keeping His commandments), we shall not taste death (salvation of the first death)
.
Exodus 29:33 - eating the sacrificed flesh for atonement
Leviticus 10:16-18 - the flesh HAS to be eaten for atonement to happen
Moroni 4:3 - eating to remember His name (taking it upon us), and follow His commandments (be one in Him)
Matthew 26:26 - the bread is the body of Christ
3. Nephi 18:7 - the bread is in memory of the ressurrected Christ
John 6:51 - the bread of Christ will give eternal life
(funny observation about the passover-sacrifice; it is perhaps important that Christ is that sacrifice, the one sacrifice that sanctify all of Israel, as it is the only sacrifice eaten by all, not only the Levites; Exodus 12:8-9 ... a sacrifice to remember the power of Him to deliver us from bondage)
.
The water, then, is the blood spilled for our forgiveness, the price for our sins, by which we are saved from the second death
.
Exodus 29:21 - sacrificial blood clean
Exodus 12:13 - by the blood purity and innocense is shown
Moroni 5:2 - the blood we remember is the spilled blood; the death of Christ, the death of the I Am, by which we all died, as He alone are in all those who accept Him
3. Nephi 18:11 - we remember the spilled blood; the death of Christ
Leviticus 17:11 - the meat is atoned by the blood; it is by the blood meat is alive
Matthew 26:27-28 - the blood (death) of Christ is given for our sins
Alma 5:21 - our clothes are made white in His blood
Apocalypse of John 7:13-14 - same ^^
Hebrews 9:13-14 + 22 - by the law, things are made clean by blood

So let us remember John 6:56-57 ... by the sacrifice and ressurrection of Christ we are saved from the first and second death. This is one of the many great mysteries of the sacrament. Not simply to remember our covernant, but to take part in a ritual probably going back to the first sacrifice (secon sacrifice if you assume the first sacrifice to be YHWH giving clothes of skin to Adam and Eve, the first killing of an animal, given from God to us ~_^ )

I had been a member of the Church only a few months when I attempted to teach someone who had been a good friend and help to me over a couple of years. I saw him as more mature and wiser than me, so when he wrote me a note which read “man cannot live by bread alone” (he was not a Christian) it made me doubt myself. Was he right?
Of course 38 years later I know what I should have replied: “but by every word that proceedeth forth from the mouth of God.”
I was taken aback by his attitude because I loved the gospel so much. I thought everyone would listen and believe. I didn’t think on my feet. I knew that scripture well. I just didn’t think to apply the rest of it in the moment. I’m a more effective missionary now.
Great insight. So many times we hope (believe) that the simplicity of truth will be enough to convince people to turn their hearts to God. Often God has a much more valuable path of learning in mind that takes longer but leads to the same conclusion.
Taylor Halverson I am sharing the gospel with an 83 year old neighbor who is a wonderful Christian. I haven’t lived here long. We met at Easter. She is going back home this week and told me she will miss our 6 feet apart porch conversations.
However she is questioning, among other things, why a child should be baptized at age eight. Do you know of any talks I could print and give to her? She loves to read and last week read my 9 page conversion story. When I went to visit her a few days later she immediately commented on it and told me she was inspired by it. I know she had felt the spirit during our visits.
I’ve explained about the Godhead and told her that a merciful Christ wants children to have the gift of the Holy Ghost to guide, teach and protect them, and that they are not in need of repentance at that age. She thinks children should be older and choose later. Thank you.
Deb Fryer: The circumcision given at 8 days old during the Law of Moses with symbolic of the age of accountability of eight years old. When the Law of Moses had served its purpose due to Christ fulfilling it, baptism was then required at the age of eight. Children appear young at that age, true. But I remember being age eight and even at age six, I was trying to work out social, emotional and spiritual problems. This age doesn’t mean a child has the full wisdom of adulthood, but, how many adults even have the full wisdom of adulthood? The truth is that child development-wise, if a child is born without unusual physical adverse circumstances, the age of eight-nine is also when psychiatrists say that a child is accountable and can discern right from wrong. I heard a psychiatrist say this myself during an interview in the media once. Christ is not looking for perfection from the child, He is looking for the child’s willingness to be perfected by Christ, and to learn to renew his/her baptismal covenants weekly, by exercising the four steps of repentance to resolve an issue when he/she runs into adversity. Being “old” enough is not Christ’s goal when saving a child. Every child is old enough to learn how to covenant with Christ and His being their Advocate and Benefactor. If we are telling a child how to be safe around a predator, that child is old enough to learn other things about safety and preservation, including where to call for help. No one in their right mind is going assume that they are totally on their own in life. We are interdependent, eternal beings and learning that sooner than later is essential, especially because learning it earlier prevents the mistake of assuming that codependency is an alternative to true help. We are not complete without what Christ offers us to preserve us. A child of the age of eight or so needs to learn that then, not just for spiritual reasons, but for healthy social/emotional/developmental reasons as well. I am now 63 years old. I don’t regret being baptized at eight even though it was a process to come to know Christ. But because I had a personal reason for gaining a genuine testimony of Christ, I did come to receive an undeniable witness. At first, when the answers to my prayers didn’t come, and that happened for 6 long months of persistent prayer, my first inclination was to mourn and tell myself, “I must be too young”. That happened three or four times, and always, my age, eleven at this time, came to my head as the reason. Each time, I decided to stop praying and planned to pray again about it when I thought that my age might finally be acceptable (to whom?!?!). But the last time it happened, when a thought out of nowhere came into my head that lack of an answer must be all about my young age, I said to some unseen power right out loud, “No! I will never stop inquiring, I will never ever stop searching and asking and pleading, not ever!”, and I fully meant it with all of my being. At that moment, the windows of heaven literally opened and I received a visitation and witness that confirmed for me the truth I had sought. One if doubt might say that I “owe” them proof of my story, but no, I don’t, just as I cannot eat, sleep or exercise for another. We’re they there making my sacrifice to know the truth I sought? No. So they cannot receive my witness. But they can receive their own undeniable witness, and I promise, it actually is a genuine and undeniable one that awaits them. A child is absolutely of age to learn these things. I remember yearning for the truth in first grade at the are of six. By are eleven, my sacrifice to know beyond only belief, was fully and memorable rewarded. Imagine how the world would transform if they too witnessed what I witnessed. I dissing waste my teen years because I carried the truth within me. I still had fun, but I had clean fun, and wrong “fun” didn’t even draw me at all. I was a singer/songwriter, and I was not peer-needy. Instead, many were inclined to lean on me even though they weren’t sure why. I am quite sure though, that it was because they sensed that I had faith, positivity, and could admit to possibility and consider possibility. I was discerning and not foolish, but I was quiet about it. Still, friends saw safety and security around me, but I know it was because they knew I learned in the safety and security of the Lord. It was through this heavenly window that I came to know that spirit matter was literally physical, molecular matter, and that we all possess the literal spirit DNA of our Fathering progenitor. I learned that my spirit cannot die, and that my physical body, it separated from my spirit, would only lie still temporarily. I learned that my heavenly Father and mother are highly advanced beings with a mission to help me learn and grow. I learned that what I see in mortality is highly limited temporarily. I can’t even describe everything I learned that day, including the discerning of spirits and the purpose and calling of our loving Mentor, the Holy Ghost, whose given name is not known to us at this time. I also learned that we can only know all truth by way of him, as that is the order of things and any surprising on our own would be unconfirmed. I learned that opinions are irrelevant and that what turns of to be true in the end was true all along. I learned that consequence is unbending to opinion and and will march on despite our avoidance of accountability. I learned that freedom is the prerequisite principle of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and we cannot exercise the full Gospel without freedom of choice, so we must learn choice first and not abuse it, for we can catch ourselves using our freedom to lose it. I learned that freedom is conditional, not unconditional. I learned that rights are conditional, not unconditional. I learned that if we have a physical body, then we choose to follow Christ and accept a body of flesh and bones during the preexistence. I learned that evidence only comes after nurturing faith all the way until the partaking of evidence from the fruition produced by that act of faith, faith being a state of movement. I learned that believe is a starter, but is not a state of moving action and cannot produces fruition by itself. How did I learn all of this and more in a single simultaneous moment? That is how the Spirit works. I was literally infused, instantly, and this is just a drop in the bucket. By age eleven, I knew this much and more, and these things helped me make it through the perilous times during the early 70’s that were so restless; now times are worse, and we have special, elite spirits that were preserved to be born during these last restless days before Christ comes again. Don’t underestimate these Saturday’s Warriors. Some are the worst, MOST are the BEST heaven has to offer. GREAT THINGS will come out of them. Have faith in God sending them to earth at this perilous time. Christ will usher in the Millennium for finishing his saving Work, okay, He has already ushered it in, starting with the worldwide Hosannah shout with palm leaves (white handkerchiefs) in our hands, April, 2020. Investigators, avoid doubt, because doubt is a traffic jam, a brick wall, and a stagnant place. Faith is a laboratory term of movement toward fruition. Fruition is everything because that is evidence. Progress toward truth only comes by way of truth, and doubt is it’s dark outsider. Admit to possibility, and endure to the end because much awaits those who never give up and admit to possibility.

I have been curious for many years about the doctrine of spiritual death, and I do understand an aspect of it, that it's a separation from God etc. But in my mind I've been thinking about the sons of perdition, Satan and his angels that are going into outer darkness etc, are they still going to have a spirit body, or is their spirits going to be annihilated into pieces and not have a spirit body? I understand if there isn't a stance of the church on this subject, but just curious at this time. TIA.
My understanding is that they will continue to spirit bodies, but with no power over any of those who have accepted Jesus. At the moment, I don't have a reference for you on this so I may be wrong.

Great question Marc. Back then, the world was more localized. Because of modern day communication and speed of travel (all tremendous changes that took off after the 1860s) our world has become far smaller. That is my perspective on why the BOM focus was more localized and now we are more globalized.
I have a thought regarding something that Tyler said regarding Melek. He mentions that the people of Melek were baptized and joined the church by the thousands. Given the amount of times in the Book of Mormon people repented and were baptized, I’m wondering if baptism pre-Christ was more a sign of repentance or renewal of covenants to the people rather than joining the church. The ordinance of the Sacrament wasn’t introduced until Christ came on the earth which we now acknowledge as a renewal of covenants and repentance post baptism. They had animal sacrifice but was baptism seen or used as something different than now? I have a tendency to believe the people of Melek were already members of the church but who may have just needed a bit of reminding of their covenants as we all do. Just my thoughts on that.
An interesting possibility. Likely, as is the case today, baptism is a single event.
Curious. We, of course, have the sacrament, which is the ordinance we use to 'renew' our baptismal (and other) covenants.
We know baptism existed prior to Christ, but there's no real evidence that the sacrament did (and in fact, seeing that it was instigated by Christ it likely did not), so perhaps they DID repeat the ordinance from time-to-time in remembrance. After all, we still do as well, though it usually takes a Temple trip.
In Alma 8:20 why did Amulek say "I am a Nephite"? What was the significance of him saying that? A Nephite... as opposed to a Lamanite or something???
Great question. One possibility is that Ammonihah was full of those who self-identified as of the "order of Nehor" not the "order of God among the Nephites."
Well, in Jacob 1:13 Jacob talks about the sub-factions of the people which included Jacobites, Josephites, Zoramites, Lumuelites and Ishmaelites. And then we have the people of Mulek (Mulekites) who likely had their own sub-factions... Jacob (and Mormon addresses this as well in Mormon 1) straight up says 'I'ma call this group 'Nephites' and this group 'Lamanites' to simplify things".
It's possible that in their own personal histories and records of their ancestry they maintained a more detailed understanding of who belonged to what group as individuals. Ancestry was, after all, very important to the Israelites and that likely carried over. Amulek could have just been stating his own ancestry, though why it was considered important at the time, well, my best guess could be Amulek reminding himself of his OWN ancestry (a direct descendant of Nephi) and of the righteousness that should entail. He goes over this further when he talks to the people of the city.
37:14 I know right? Anti-LDS, and Ex-LDS do it a lot in order to make it *sound* like the Book of Mormon contradicts the Bible. I've noticed that they're more likely to take the Book of Mormon out of context but I've seen them do it to the Bible as well.
I wish you hadn't skipped over verses 28, 29, 38, 39 and the end of 44. I would have loved to hear some discussion and clarification on why Amulek says there is only one God, also when he says that the Son of God is the Very Eternal Father and his statement that God the Father, The Son and The Holy Ghost are one Eternal God.

Here is a response from some other BYU Professors that might help. “That same Jehovah had spoken anciently to Isaiah: ‘I, even I, am the Lord; and beside me there is no saviour.’ Zeezrom then asks whether it is the Son of God who will come as the Messiah, to which Amulek answers simply, ‘Yea.’ From the crafty lawyer's perspective at this point it would appear that Amulek is contradicting himself. But in fact the Nephite missionary is delivering a profound truth: Jesus Christ is both God and Son of God. Is there only one God? Yes, there is only one God who shall come to take away the sins of the world and ransom fallen men and women from the temporal and spiritual death brought into the world by the fall of Adam. That God is also the Son of God, the Son of Man, meaning the Son of the Man of Holiness."

@@taceyb1 This is something I often ponder about and I don't pretend to be some significant scriptorian but maybe a little personal insight might help. Notice Amulek specifies in 11:39 that "He [Christ] is the very Eternal Father" and then adds the qualifiers "of heaven and of earth, and all things which in them are;"
Taylor and Tyler talk in this video about how all things relating to this earth are done through the Son. Alma specifies in chapter 13 about how Priests are called after the Holy Order of the Son of God. To me this concept is all about how- as far as we are concerned- Jesus Christ is the ONLY means by which we can be saved, and as such (and I say this in a very specific measure and definition) he is the only God that matters to us. Without him, we would never return to the presence of the Father, who is ruled by the concept of justice that DEMANDS a price be paid for all imperfections. Without him, we and all on this Earth would forever be apart from His glory because there would be no mercy to satisfy those demands. He created everything in both Heaven and Earth and thus is the father of all things (as we know them) having created them. He is also the Son having been created by HIS Father (the aformentioned Man of Holiness.
Everything that WE know and everything that we are and everything that happens on this Earth was (and is) done in, of, by, and through Christ. Nothing that exists within our sphere gets around him and so He is our one true God while at the same time existing as part of the Trinity.
I don't know if that concept really helps anyone but me but I felt impressed to share. Abinadi clarifies this a bit more at the beginning of Mosiah 15.
