  • We describe the Zamacueca as the Mother Dance of the Americas because it has spawned an infinite number of folkloric "children" in Latin America, including the Marinera of Peru, Zamba of Argentina, the Cuecas of Chile and Bolivia, the Chilena of Mexico, and early California dances of the gold rush era. It is living proof that America has had a multicultural identity that is still manifests itself today. Over time, the Zamacueca has been a motif of celebration, gallantry, romance, independence, identity, struggle, and academic research. Above all, it has always been a unifying force throughout Latin America.
The Zamacueca has its principle roots in the Fandango of 16th-century Spain. This Embryonic dance form, which was first imported to the coastal area of Peru, has been reinvented many times. In Peru, the Zamacueca is today called "Marinera de Lima." It is our national dance that, while representing Peru, also emphasizes the authoritative role of women.
Our composition pays tribute to the legacy left in Peru by women of African descent. "MUJER NEGRA"
