  • How to Lock Up your Electric Scooter
This is a short video on how to lock up your electric scooter and a warning on not using cheap cable locks as they're far too easy to cut through. Thieves are motivated by easy scores so if you make it more difficult they'll move on to another target. Protect your ride with these ideas but of course if you can keep your scooter with you. I happen to push my scooter through the grocery store, pop it under the table at restaurants and leave it in the corner when I'm getting a massage. I even take it out onto the sidelines of the soccer pitch when I referee and play and of course I leave it in my apartment and not locked up outside in a bike rack. However if I had a bigger scooter and wanted to lock it up for a few minutes I would use one or maybe two locks just to be extra safe.

I bought my first electric scooter and was so excited about it. I went to Home Depot and bought the biggest lock they had. It cost $60 and was as big as my fist. I had a thick cable and was happy about it. I rode it up to WalMart 6 days after I bought it and I just assumed I was supposed to keep it outside. So I rode it up to the bike rack right outside the door. I didn’t feel great about leaving it there but I told myself I was only going in and out so it would be quick. Before I went inside I used the app to remotely shut the electronic dashboard down and lock it. So it couldn’t be used by anybody else. I was in Walmart for 3 items and I walked out the door 9 minutes later right before they closed. I rounded the corner and my scooter was gone. I felt a lump in my throat and I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. They had a roaming security guard in a vehicle just driving up and down the parking lot. So I walked out to talk to him and as he was driving toward me I stuck my hand out and waved for him to stop and I was walking up to meet him. At the last second he swerved around me and kept driving.
I couldn’t freakin believe it. So I spent 15 minutes chasing him down until I finally cornered him and he couldn’t move without hitting me. So he rolled his window down and as I told him about my scooter it became apparent that he couldn’t care less. He cut me off and told me to go tell a manager inside. So I figured he was worthless and walked up to the front door. They were closed so I started knocking on the doors. No less than 6 Walmart employees looked right at me and then had to do their very best to pretend I wasn’t there. They were standing not 20 feet from me.
So my last resort was to call the police. I did and then proceeded to wait for a cop for approximately 2 hours. At 1am n office shoes up and as I relayed the story to him he treated me like I was the criminal. Hep told me I was not getting my scooter back. He told me that all those security cameras at Walmart cannot even make out a face or read a license plate. He took my report and then I walked home without my scooter.
The only real anti theft rig you should have is first, don’t let your scooter out of your sight, and second put an Apple AirTag beneath the deck. If it is ever stolen you could follow the trail right up to the thieves front door. It’s the only sure thing. Don’t lock it up outside.

I'm so sorry to hear of your experience :(
I actually don't leave my scooters outside stores, I actually push them through the store like a shopping cart and leave the basket on the deck.
I've never been stopped from shopping :)
I only lock it in places I can see the scooter or if I'm running in for 30 secs ...otherwise I'm not leaving expensive equipment in the public :(
sad times that we even need locks.
Which lock did you use? Did it have a warranty...was it left behind cut?

    • @adamlv1
      @adamlv1 Před rokem +13

@@TimsElectric the lock was a There was no warrenty for theft. It was a total loss. I had a Masterlock but it was huge. It was the biggest one they had at Home Depot. The cable was thick and I don’t think you could cut it with any old bolt cutters. I think they must have used a cutting torch. They took everything. And like I said I had remotely locked the scooter through the app and I can still open the app to this day and see it is still locked. And it was stolen a year ago. I have an AirTag under the deck now so I can just track my new scooter if it is ever taken. I walk it through the store too. I have done this ever since that happened. But last time I was in WalMart I had this supervisor tell me I couldn’t bring it in. I got super mad at her because it was at that store that my other scooter was stolen. She didn’t care at all and told me I had to leave it outside. I just ignored her and went in anyway which made her follow me all throughout the store talking crap to me. But I had been walking it through the store for the past year without any issues. So I have to go speak to someone who matters there because I am not leaving it outside if they can’t keep it safe at the bike rack. It’s really incredible.

Hi Tim, thanks for making the video. Just wanted to let you and the community know that I had my e-scooter stolen last night and it was locked with a small Kryptonite lock around it's neck, attached to that exact city bike lock up your video. I came out to find the lock there, fully intact, but the scooter gone. I think this would have happened with ANY lock that was simply around the neck. Bummer. Working towards a 2 lock method and maybe an alarm for my next scooter. Thanks for sharing your wisdom. Ride safe! - Brooke

The outstanding feature of this bike is its ability to be charged when in indoor mode! With its brushless 750W motor, impressive torque, and top speed of 20mph, it seems like a game-changer. The 80mm front suspension and puncture-resistant fat tires ensure a smooth ride on any terrain, while the Smart Saddle Detection+ feature adds a unique touch of fitness and technology. I utilize a Sold Secure Diamond Seatylock Mason U-lock, a Seatylock Viking Chain lock and 2, 113-decibel vibration motion alarms with sensitivity settings that is remote-controlled.
These physical locks have the advantage of being slider-cylinder locking mechanisms as opposed to disc-detainer that big brands such as Abus and Kryptonite use, making them far less susceptible to seizing and failing (lock picking is virtually non-existant among bike thieves so the easier to pick slider-cylinder mechanism is no big deal). Not to mention, they are also muchcheaper thanks to the 0 spending on advertising the Seatylock brand invests on (that's why you also haven't heard of them).
For the cherry on top, I conceal the scooter (and the bike rack itself) with a waterproof bike cover that has integrated holes that can be secured with a cable lock so the thief wouldn't know exactly what's underneath it. If they dare to even tamper the cover, they will get startled by the 2 motion alarms before they even get to see what it covers!

Most secure way to keep your scooter safe is fold it and carry it with you. If a store gives you crap tell them to hold it behind their counter otherwise you say it's coming with under my arm.

Be careful using that disk brake lock. It can bend your diskbrake. And that’s an expensive fix in many shops. You’ve been warned. If a great idea, but make sure the wheel can’t move back and forth. And when you insert the key, don’t insert with force because that increases the chance it will bend more and more over time.

Put an AirTag under your deck board. It is the only way you are ever going to be able to leave your scooter behind and not worry about it. If someone takes it you can track its location with your smartphone right up to the thieves doorstep and ask for it back. They cost $30 and it’s the only sure thing and thieves won’t be able to find it.

@@phraker5709 You can put an AirTag anywhere on your scooter. I put it down the side of the battery and then cover it with that expanding foam which is water resistant and becomes super tough. But to your point. Thieves have no idea that something has an AirTag attached to it. So yes, a thief can remove an AirTag. But they are not even going to know it’s there and I don’t know of anybody that is going to steal a scooter and then dismantle the entire thing to look for an AirTag that may or may not be there.
On top of this, just looking for the AirTag is going to take time. I’m talking about leaving my scooter outside a store or something. My phone is going to alert when the scooter is moved, which means I will be hot on the tail of whoever takes it. They will not have time to even look for an AirTag.
If they manage to take your scooter into a house and you can track it there, I believe the shock of having the owner on your doorstep within minutes would freak most thieves out and you can probably get your stuff back. But if you have any trouble at all then the thief is basically asking you to involve the police. Most thieves just don’t want to go there.

@@adamlv1" Thieves have no idea that something has an AirTag attached to it." Yes, they do. AirTags have this really annoying anti-stalking feature where they will notify you on your phone if you're being "followed" by a tag that isn't registered to you. Samsung's tags will also notify the thief that they are being followed by a tag that is not registered to them. The only similar device that doesn't do this is the Tile, with Anti-Theft mode enabled.

I haven't had any HUGE issues with this lock yet! czcams.com/users/postUgkxfyHDlEqk6hqu9acdvK5NGzZsGKSokSbv It seems sturdy and like it will get the job done. I really like that it has a twisting lock feature to keep out dirt and debris. However, the mounting system is much too light for the lock, and continues to get loose/move around. It's mostly made of plastic parts, and I've had to tighten it a few times in the past week or so that I've had it. I'm worried that it's going to break off at some point while I'm riding. I'm considering just scrapping that part, but that would mean having to carry the heavy lock i my backpack and adding more weight. I wish I could have given this more stars, but without the mounting system, it's just another heavy lock that I have to cart around. UPDATE: Increased rating to 5 stars because the seller offered to provide a new lock and mounting system. Really appreciate the attention to customer service!!
