    Great video showing that if you put aside a little extra time grinding the meat yourself you can save a lot of money in the long run. I don't have the equipment so I have a friend to do it for me in exchange for fresh okra. AND thank you for allowing us to keep an emotional distance between your farm animals. I love Mr. Dexter, Dolly and the girls, but I realize what their purpose is on the homestead: Survival. The passing of Art and Bri's milk cow, Dolly, grabbed my heart. I am not ashamed to say that I shed some tears.

    I've been grinding my own beef for about a year now. The taste and texture is so much better, and it doesn't all cook away. When I find the roasts on sale, I buy a lot of them and then grind it and package it the exact way you showed.

  • @lindasmith6202
    @lindasmith6202 Před 6 lety +3

    Okay, you convinced me; I've been thinking about a grinder so I think I'll do it. Years ago, on the ranch, we ate a lot of deer & butchered our own hogs. We didn't have electricity so we used manual grinder - good thing we had six kids to share the labor. Lol

  • @nikkil764
    @nikkil764 Před 6 lety +16

    I buy roasts and grind it myself. You save money and don’t get any pink slime. It amazes me more people don’t do this. Even crazier is the high price of stew meat compared to a roast. Are people really that lazy, they can cut it into cubes?

    • @HoneyHollowHomestead
      @HoneyHollowHomestead Před 6 lety +2

      That's exactly why I NEVER buy stew meat! Always buy cheaper cuts and cut them up. I find that beef shanks make excellent beef stew!

      I've always wondered the same thing, why would someone pay so much more for the same meat cut up into small pieces.

      I stopped by the store yesterday. They had packages in the meat department all ready to dump in a roasting pan... meat, seasonings and cut up veggies. And I'm sure these people will call this home cooking. LOL

    • @learntocrochet1
      @learntocrochet1 Před 6 lety

      To the repliers, it's good that you know how to use meat and I hope you share it with some. People buy precut meat 'cus they've never been shown how which meat to buy for what uses. Some don't even know it's fine (or they're embarrassed to, ask the butcher! I had a fellow shopper ask me if I knew which meat to buy for stew, asl there was no precut packages. I advised them, but then said, "did you know the butcher will also give advise?" They didn't know!
      People buy meat, veggie and spice kits 'cus know one has taught them to cook, they are afraid to follow recipes and think they will fail. Cooking scares a lot of folks. Well, I try to think of these kits as a confidence building kit for beginners. Better than fast food, eh?

    We’ve been buying and grinding chuck roast for over 20+ years. While we may or may not be saving money we do know exactly the quality of our ground beef. No brown meat hidden in the center, and no fillers which is why we started doing this so long ago. We grind the beef cold like recomnended, vacuum seal it, and freeze it. We typically make up 7-9 pounds at a time. Used for tacos, spaghetti, chili, and meatloaf. Probably go through 3 to 4 pounds a month especially during the winter when it’s cold and we aren’t grinding outside as much.

    LOVE that you grind your own! I would too, but I don't have a grinder yet. I never buy or eat ground beef anyway. Only if I did it myself. I have cut up roasts for stew beef though. I believe it's always better if I do it myself. :) I usually just use cooked turkey or chicken, chopped up for ground beef in recipes and that works well. Hey! Whatever works right?

    I'm happy to see you doing what I've been doing for nearly 10 years, but I double grind mine and add a little bit more fat. Fat has been given a bad rap when it's the rock form of calcium and lack of vitamin K2 (a fat soluble vitamin from grass fed animals) that causes heart disease (hardening of the arteries) with a nasty bacteria. The roasts you are using look like roasts I would pick out myself ... you continue to show me your wisdom in many areas. Those of us born in 1959 seem to have been blessed with an added something. :)
